Thanks ! I also have same size hand as my wife who is 5’9 . In men’s glove
size I am borderline small and roomy medium . I guess I can always head to
riv HQ and try couple of bikes set up with Shimano and TRP.

I have both levers on different bikes. I guess I have smaller hands (though 
I wear a medium or large sized glove). At any rate, I prefer the simple 
Shimano. The TRP RRL are too wide for my mitts. Sure enough, I can use them 
(and have been, for 9 or 10 years now), but I find them wider and bulkier 
than I prefer. Also, the button that releases cable tension has jammed and 
no amount of fidgeting has released them. Doesn't affect the braking, only 
the ability to use one neat feature of the brake levers. As Steve mentions, 
one advantage of the RRL is that the breaking power from the hoods is quite 
good.  In sum: both are fine. I think the Shimano are better than fine in 
my hands, and less expensive to boot.

(glove size lg to xl) the TRPs with their wider hoods are so much better. I 
also find the curved levers provide more effective braking from the hoods.

[RBW] TRP RRL vs Shimano Tiagra

Folks, 
Want to give drop bars one more time on my homer. 

 Long background and context , I had drop bars set up TRP RRL but never got 
comfortable . But I think it had do more with the reach. I had around set 
back and 7 cm stem . Also I have short torso and long legs. I am 5'8.5 but 
have pbh of 86.5 . Out of curosity I tried Knee over pedal spindle with 
plumb bob. On my homer I had to set it up with zero set back and push 
saddle forward. ( interestingly same thing on my Atlantis translates to 
around 20 mm set back , didn't realize .5 degree change in seat tube could 
make such difference ). More importantly with  this saddle position it 
feels like my reach has significantly increased. I can comfortably reach 6 
-7 cm beyond hooks of albatross set up on 100 mm Nitto faceplater. So I am 
thinking of trying 52 cm noodles with 7cm stem. 

I like aesthetics of Shimano better than RRL . So folks who have used both? 
Is there a difference in performance and comfort , to make the upgrade 
worth it. Also looks like ramps on RRL are longer, does it add to the 
reach? . My priority is in the following order 1. Comfort 2. Braking 
performance 3. Asthetics 4. Price. 

I would really appreciate your experience and insights. Happy weekend !

[RBW] Adventures in (Re) building my Saluki

You may remember my previous post after retrieving my Saluki ( Serial #007) 
from the powder coating shop in White River Jct Vt.   I thought the rebuild 
would be simple and straight forward.  What could go wrong?!!

First, I discovered that the threads in the BB shell needed to be 
re-chased.  This required 25 miles of driving (rt) to the Village Bicycle 
Shop in Richmond, Vt.  Home again things went well until I tried to. 
remount the rear fender.  Now realizing that all the eyelits also needed to 
be re-chased .  Another 25 miles of driving, only to discover  that a 
family emergency  had lead to an unscheduled closing.  Tried again the next 
day..  Along the way I recognized that the stem would not tighten down.  I 
figured out that the wedge shaped nut was disconnected from the long stem 
bolt, and jammed in the head tube..  This required removing the stem, HB, 
brakes,  fenders and fork in order drive the now deformed nut out of the 
head tube.  Had another in my spare parts bin.   OK.  Now with everything 
(almost) tightened down, I set out on a shakedown  ride. 

What a joy!  I didn't buy any new parts for this rebuild but am still 
leaning toward a new front rack.  Contrary to GPs opinions I really 
appreciate hi end Paul's breaks, TA rings, and Campy derailleurs and smooth 
shifting..  I rode along grooving on the sweet, neutral handling of the 
Saluki; the easy & comfy rolling of the PariMoto 45 mm tires.  No break 
squeak from my Pauls Neo Retros.  Then, about 6 miles from home all hell 
broke loose! 

Actually what broke was one tiny bolt holding the rear deraileur cage 
together.  That left me  without a pulley or functioning rear derailer. 
 Fortunately I was uphill from home so could coast  half the way home, 
where I discovered the remaining half of the deraileur (Campy Centaur) was 
wedged  between cogs in the cassette.  It turned out I had another Campy 
Centaur deraileur to use. Yea.

To deliver the coup, either in the process of wedging itself or my effort 
to free the derairller managed to damage the threads in the dropout and 
neither derailleur would rethread into the frame..  Another trip to a bike 
shop.

It turned out that the replacement derailleur also had a broken part, which 
is probably why it was in a box of random parts.  After some some despair, 
(and a drink) I found a way to combine the two broken derailleurs into one 
functioning part!

Tomorrow will try another ride.  It looks good.

Good to have an opinion of Schwalbe 14A butyls versus at least 1 brand of
TPU tubes; perhaps I'm well enough off with the Schwalbe butyl extralights
which, besides, do very well amongst goatheads with OS regular forumla.

Yes - you get it - you get 26" wheels. I've been racing since I was 12
years of age and when I moved up to 700C a bit of the magic, the fun was
gone. When the XO-1 was released I jumped on it. Nimble, quick
acceleration, and to you point "bombproof"

I was in DC the weekend after the Nat'l bike summit, which my wife 
attended, and we rode the Capital Crescent to Rock Creek with a dedicated 
stop at Happy Go. The owner (whose name I can't recall) was incredibly 
friendly and we chatted about infrastructure and how obnoxious it is that 
wealthy residents oppose traffic calming or more livable streets when it 
would interrupt their god-given right to park in front of Starbucks. Hoping 
the improvements move forward! Also what a great shop

[RBW] FS: Heron Road frame & fork, 60 cm; $600 + shipping

One last effort to sell this never-built 60 cm Heron Road frame and fork 
only. As all will know, these bikes were designed by Grant at Rivendell as 
a collaboration with Rona Components, then owned by Ted Durant. and produced at 
Waterford. This beautiful blue-green road frame bears serial number B00055, 
and was built in February 2000 with Reynolds 531 tubing. (For further 
information, all of the original Heron web pages are still accessible: 
http://www.heronbicycles.com/geometry.html). 
Designed for then-available short reach brakes, and 28mm tires with fenders 
(RH Chinook Pass); 30mm tires will also fit, depending on actual dimensions 
and rims. For wider tires, some riders have happily converted these to 650b 
using long reach brakes that were not available when the frame was made; 
Tektro 559s, as usual, or similar.
  The frame bears only the slightest mark on the inside of one rear 
dropout, probably a sign of having been fitted with a wheel at some point; 
it is otherwise pristine with all decals and the Heron head badge in 
perfect condition. I'm asking $600, plus shipping and insurance. 
  I'm selling because I am moving. (Meanwhile a local friend has sold 
me a beautiful custom Riv road bike, made by Curt Goodrich for Douglas 
Brooks. So, n-1; n+1 = 0, at least for now).

easily ride a 56cm, and wouldn’t hesitate to pick up another if I were to ever

Another possibility is finding a Riv All-Rounder – many of them were 
spec'ed for 26" wheels, even in the larger frame sizes, and it should be 
just dandy for leisurely rides. Barring that, maybe you can find the 
Handsome XOXO – they take a larger tire than the OG XO-1.

While it is true that latex inner tubes are not made in 559-inch wheel 
sizes, they are absolutely made in 559mm BSD wheel sizes.  Maybe not quite 
as skinny as the tires Patrick Moore runs, but Vittoria makes one that is 
labeled 1.70" - 2.30". Michelin Air-Comp are out there with a box labeled 
1.6 - 2.1". 

Latex inner tubes are made in 559mm BSD wheel sizes.

[RBW] DC Riv Dealer Figures Visually in TV Piece

Here in suburban DC we have been battling to get a bike lane put in on our 
main commuter route.  The Mayor was all in until about a month ago, so now 
the City Council is standing up to her.  Basically, it would head from the 
top of DC downtown as a protected lane and would be huge win.

I do local advocacy and the TV reporter (yes, a cyclist) reached out to me, 
I said meet me at our LBS Riv dealer, Happy Go.  I am off my bike for a 
week or so, so my Platty did not make an appearance, but Happy Go did.  And 
that is my head talking in favor.

I was delighted to see that the Rivendell owner in the photos is wearing a t-shirt that I designed for the local brewery I do all the graphic design for (West Sixth Brewing in Lexington KY). The shirt says “Ride bikes, drink beer”, and features a simple illustration of the brewery’s Cetma cargo bakfiets that was custom built into a mobile bike bar with a beer tap on it!
