Absolutely beautiful. I am so jealous. The pictures made my morning and I
can't wait to see the finished build.

[RBW] Re: 2020 miles in 2020

2020-10-14 Thread 'Ann L' via RBW Owners Bunch
Leah:

You can do it! I find the more I do, the easier it gets. And don't be
afraid to ride in the rain. I spent many years riding in the Pacific
Northwest (to which I will be returning soon) and the people here were
amazed to see me riding in downpours. My response was that you learn you
don't melt and in where I lived before, if I waited for a sunny day to
ride, I would ride two weeks out of the year. Dress in layers for the cold
and for wet riding, invest in good rain gear.

I am very sorry about your dad. My parents are older and have had serious
health issues. I know I will be lucky to have them another five years but
I can't wrap my head around losing them. I love that you kept your dad's
bike for your sons. A good steel frame lasts a lifetime and then some.
Your grandchildren may end up riding this bike.

Go fancy. In fact for a frame that pretty, there is no such thing as too
fancy.

Also, when I initially had Honjos on my Soma, I had 700c seven though my
wheels were 650bs. The aluminum was pliable enough to bend to fit the
wheels and didn't look off. That may be an option for you to explore. I
will see if I can find some pictures.

Re: [RBW] Platypus: First Look

2020-10-04 Thread 'Ann L' via RBW Owners Bunch
I will have to see about the colors. My Soma is the "Rivendell Blue"
color. From the pictures, the blilver looks closer to teal so that might
work. But I want a different color than the bikes I already have so if
it's too close to my Soma, I will opt for something else. I am not crazy
about the limolive but will wait for further pictures. I am also exploring
a custom paint job. But I do ride my bikes hard and all the time and given
the beausade I put on them, it might be best to go with a production
color. If I recall correctly, you are in Las Vegas and don't have to deal
with the same weather conditions so aluminum fenders may work out for you
and would look beautiful with your raspberry and cream color scheme. The
metal was thin enough on my honjo's that the bolt rotted through and I had
to rig it out with zip tie until I got it replaced. The Woody's are very
light, stunningly beautiful, and incredibly sturdy. I am playing with
different ideas for my build but I do know I want a single ring crank with
a 10 or 11 cassette and a sunracer bar end shifter (and the aforementioned
cork grips).

I am also eyeing these for my future Platypus build. I have a Bosco on my
Appaloosa and an Albatross on my San Marcos. The Losco looks like a hybrid
between them.

Thanks for the help, folks. I just bought a Nitto s83 off of ebay for $82,
including shipping. Hopefully, this will end my bolt shearing
experiences. Although I didn't crash the last time it happened, I did have
to walk my bike back for almost 5 miles so I will happily pay not to do
that again.

This is such a nice offer, but my local bike shop was able to find a bolt

Because I rode my bike to work when the original bolt broke. It broke just
as i was pulling in so I had to jury rig a replacement to get home. The
fix seemed to work and so I never got around to replacing it. The two
breaks were about a year apart. Since the bolt sheared off twice in the
same manner I originally thought it might have something to due with my
saddle placement or other factors.

I actually have the nitto 65 post on the bike. I took it by my local bike

I'm thinking the first break was a freak accident and the second was caused
by me fixing it with a substandard bolt. Thanks for the responses

2020-06-18 Thread 'Ann L' via RBW Owners Bunch
Yes. If you tell them the deal is the bike fitting in the back, they
will. They didn't even put protective covering down for the bike when I
did this (which I suggested). I also recommend bringing a ipad or
equivalent and looking at cars at other dealerships when they do the "I
need to consult with my manager" BS and angle so the manager can see (they
didn't let this go on for very long). Also, have the Kelley Bluebook value
of the car and and your trade in with you. I got yelled at by a
salesperson who tried to convince me this "just included taxes" and tried
to get me to pay full MSRP. Note: I didn't buy the car. I hate absolutley
buying cars. But when I do, I understand myself to be a warrior going into
battle.

I would suggest going with the hatchback. I currently drive a mini cooper
(4 door edition) and I can fit my Appaloosa in with the front wheel off. I
would also recommend showing up at the dealership with one of your bikes to
test their cargo capacity. It will give you a good idea of how the bike
fits and drive the sales person nuts.

I currently ride a Soma San Marcos and an Appaloosa. For those not
familiar, the San Marcos frame was a collaboration between RBW and Soma
Fabrications. I think my San Marcos is closest to the Roadini, but I would
be very interested in hearing from someone who has ridden both as to the
similarities/differences. I absolutely adore both my bicycles and ride one
or both everyday. The San Marcos is stripped down, no racks or fenders,
with 35 mm tires, and is my good weather/easy to carry up stairs/fast
bike. The Appaloosa has a rack, fenders, Wald bolt on basket and is my bad
weather/smooth rider/haul stuff bike. I want a mixte because it will be
completely different from my other bikes and am already plotting how to
build it up to make it a unique ride.

I also nominate you to be on the Design Committee (and will second myself,
that sounds like an awesome job).

absolutely stunning on your Wilbur. I was thinking of going with Billie

looking for a different feel for my next ride.

Kurt:

Unfortunately, I have a longer torso and shorter legs. I currently have a
46 cm Appaloosa and 47 cm Soma San Marcos that fit me although they were
custom made for me. I definitely would not be able to go up a size. I
love both bikes and ride them all the time. I decided my next bike is
going to be a mixte and have been waiting for the next batch of Cheviots to
come in. The only color left in my size for the ones in stock is the same
as my San Marcos and I would prefer something different.

passenger seat pulled all the way forward the bike will fit. It should be
noted that I have the 4 door model and the back seat fold down completely

I had a set of Honjo fluted fenders. Although they were extremely light
weight and beautiful, I can personally attest they were neither quiet nor
hearty. The first time a pebble rattled through one of the fenders, it
sounded like the derailleur was eating itself. I ride my bikes hard in all
types of weather. After two years, the bolt holding the front fender to
the frame attachment rotted through the thin aluminum. From the type of
riding you do as gleaned from your posts, Honjos probably are not a good
choice for you.

I have an Appaloosa and I absolutely love it. I, too, debated between a

As far as head badges, in my (biased) opinion, I rate first: Hungapillar
(coolest badge ever); second: a three way tie between the Appaloosa, the
Cheviot, and the Saluki.

This thread got a little side tracked and I would like to comment again
that the graphic fenders look amazing with the grilver roadino frame.

I've attached the link below describing the procedure. The corks are
surprisingly durable and you also get the bonus of drinking the wine :)

I would advise to call the website number and talk to Cody Davis, whom is
both the guy whom both answers the phone and builds the fenders. He is
super nice and an amazing craftmen who will set you up right. I have
woody's on two of my bikes and love them. But also be advised that you may
need to use the "wine cork method" to get the back fender to fit right. PM
me if you need details.

In my opinion, bikes always look better with fenders :)

That is a really close match for the the grilver and an overall sharp
looking bike.

Joe:

The blue is really beautiful and looks close to the silvery aquamarine
color of my San Marcos. I look forward to more pictures once you have the
Woody's installed and the bike broken in. I love how the cream accents
look against the metallic blue.

Joe:

My beloved San Marcos appears to be the same blue (which is stunning) so I
can't argue with the choice and the savings.

However, I am a bit sad not to see a candy apple and cream Cheviot. I will
put it on my wish list for myself if I win the lottery :)

I look forward to seeing the pictures.

It looks like the blue Joe is back on the sale web page so you are back to

BTW: I have an Appaloosa and love it. It is an amazingly stable plush
