[RBW] Re: Platform pedal recommendations

2020-11-06 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm a fan of VO's Sabot. It has a large platform (100mm by 100mm, IIRC),
is aluminum and silver, and has shortish rounded pins for grip. The pins
don't rip up my shoes, but they also don't grip well when the pedal's wet.
That last bit is their one downside, but it's a price I'm willing to pay
for pins that don't chew up my soles.

[RBW] Re: A different Mustache/Albastache set-up?

2020-07-20 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Charlie, Zack, and Ted,

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm trying to use bars I already
have---which are Mustache, Albatross, and VO Porteur---rather than buy
another (such as the Soma or Albastache) specifically for this
application. I know the VO Porteur and the Albatross will work well but
I've always wanted to use my Mustache at some point and thought this might
be my chance. Looks like I'd be sacrificing the natural compatibility of
the Albatross or Porteur and be trying to *force *the Mustache into
working, which I don't want to do given the other options. So I guess I
give up and will go with one of the other bars.

Thanks to all who responded.

[RBW] A different Mustache/Albastache set-up?

2020-07-15 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
When I see a Mustache or Albastache bar installed it almost always has
drop-bar brake levers installed sideways at the bends and is completely
wrapped like a drop bar. When I see an Albatross or other typical upright
bar installed it almost almost always has the city-type brake levers
installed in a typical orientation toward the ends of the bar and has some
type of grip but is bare other than that.

I don't recall ever seeing a Mustache or Albastache bar set up like an
Albatross bar, with city brake levers and grips installed in typical
upright-bar fashion. Is anyone aware of a reason that wouldn't work well?
I'm tempted to try it but thought I'd ask here first in case there's a
reason that I simply don't see. Thanks.

Hi Ann,

If you need to replace the seat post, I'd recommend checking out
Velo-Orange's long set-back post, seen here

It's a 2-bolt design so you don't need to crank it down, it has a set-back
that's suitable for Brooks saddles, and it's reasonably priced.

[RBW] Re: Reading saddle threads, B17, Berthoud Mente

2020-07-12 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Joel,

I've ridden (and still ride) Brooks B-17 and Berthoud Mente and Aspin
saddles. The widths from widest to narrowest is Mente > B-17 > Aspin. My
sit bones are 125mm apart, and which saddle I like best depends on the type
of riding I do on it. For touring, the Mente wins. For general riding I
like the B-17. For faster-paced riding I like the Aspin or B-17.

There's more to it then just width, though. The shapes differ, with the
Berthoud being flatter front to back and the B-17 being slightly dippy in
the middle. How it feels also depends on how upright you ride. You really
need to try them to know, which is always the case with saddles. The only
objective comment I'd make is that with sit bones 35mm narrower than mine,
I'd guess that the Mente would feel too wide for you.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Campee 34F front rack

2020-06-28 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
In my experience, Riv's don't handle heavy front loads well, which I
attribute to their high-trail designs. I've read posts that claim
otherwise, but for me even a Berthoud-size bag on a front rack, loaded with
a moderate-for-its-size weight, isn't as stable as I'd like it to
be---especially in a cross-wind. On short tours on my Sam, I carry a large
or medium Saddlesack on top of a rear rack and a small Saddlesack on a
Mark's rack in front and that works well. If I want to carry more weight
in front then I take a different bike, one with lower trail. The ride may
be better with the weight lower than I've used, as with panniers, but I
haven't tried that.

Hi Leah,

I also like the Brooks B-17 Champion and Select, but if you want something
wider you should look into the Berthoud Mente. It's a bit wider than the
B-17 and flatter on top, the latter being a difference that might work for
you or against you; you'd have to try it to see. I use the Mente on tours

*out* anything 'cause you can keep 'em around for hazardous household

[RBW] Re: Crash Stories

2020-03-16 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
The two worst crashes I've had were as a kid.

In one, I was riding down my street popping small wheelies. It wasn't your
typical Wheelie Bike but still, by pulling up on the handlebars I could
lift the front wheel for a second and then come back down. One time I did
that and watched the fork lift, but the wheel stayed on the ground rolling
just a tiny bit faster than the bike I was on. I came down on the fork
tips and toppled, but don't remember hurting from it.

In the other one I was racing my friend Jay down the same paved street. I
was next to the curb on my right, Jay was on my left, away from the curb.
I won and stopped pedaling, but Jay kept pedaling and went ahead of me
after the finish line. I had a premonition and yelled out "Don't turn!"
He hollered "What?" I said "Go straight. DON'T TURN!" Jay turned right
into a driveway. My front wheel clipped his back wheel and I went flying.
I had huge strawberries on my leg, arm, and forehead, and felt 100%
deflated. I stood up and mumbled "get my bike" and walked home and
collapsed on the couch, where I just kinda laid for awhile.

Fun times, huh?

I've always admired good, strong graphics on bikes. Not 1980's neon-like

of years ago I bought a used Quickbeam that had been stripped of its decals
but kept the head badge, and a little after that bought a used Box Dog

without decals. To my surprise I really dug (and still dig) the looks of
them both. I think it's the stealth factor, although I can't say I've
spent much time analyzing my psychology behind it.

[RBW] Re: Vaughn's custom for sale

2020-02-28 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi John. The imperfections were the paint chip and a couple of design
details, IIRC.

Yep, it's a healthy discount off the going rate but I think the going rate
is high and I've thought that for years. I love Riv and have bought more
than a few frames, a complete bike, and a lot of parts from them over the
years, but I've never understood why someone would order a custom Riv. A
lot of good builders out there will charge less for a custom and could
design one to ride like a Riv. I'm not talking about an exact copy, but
one designed similarly that has the same ride characteristics.

I *do* see one advantage of ordering from Riv, and that's Grant's input and
oversight. That makes it more likely to ride like a Riv---there's some
insurance there---but it's expensive insurance. Obviously not everyone
will agree with me, 'cause they *do* sell some customs.

This isn't a knock against Riv, by the way---I'm sure there are underlying
reasons for their pricing---I just think their customs represent poor value
when compared to customs by some other good builders. I've also thought
that about some other frames and parts I've bought from Riv, but that
didn't stop me from buying 'em!

[RBW] Re: I need to repair or mask scratches in new black paint

2020-02-16 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi all,

The story has a happy ending thanks for a local auto detailer. I took it
to him yesterday and said "can you fix this?" He thumbed it and said "I
think so, but my nail is catching one of the scratches so it may not come
out completely." I said that's fine, even if it's just greatly diminished
I could live with it. He put a dollop of liquid goop on a rag and polished
for a minute, reloaded his rag and polished for a minute more, said "I'm
gonna switch to something lighter," disappeared in back for a minute, came
back with a dollop of something else on the rag, polished for a minute,
inspected it, and said "can you still see it?" I looked and said "nope,
you're a genius."

It took him about 6 minutes to fix the problem, which says a lot for
relying on experience. And I got to watch him, so I'll be comfortable
doing it myself next time if there *is* a next time. I brought it home,
put a coat of wax on top, and took it over to my mechanic a while ago. He
won't finish it before I leave town later this week, but he'll have it done
by the time I return in a month. I'm looking forward to seeing the
finished bike.

Thanks again to all those who chimed in.

[RBW] Re: I need to repair or mask scratches in new black paint

2020-02-13 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks much to everyone who's responded. I love this forum, with its
cumulative knowledge and folks who're willing to take the time to help
others.

Laing mentioned Youtube, which was a great suggestion that I hadn't
considered. Forty minutes of watching scratch-removal videos convinced me
that the scratches can probably be removed by polishing, or if not removed
then at least diminished to the extent that they won't torment me when I
ride and look down. Responses that followed Laing's confirmed that the
right kind of polishing might do the trick. Many of the Youtube videos
warn about being too aggressive or the possibility of leaving streaks or
fine lines so the solution is not without risk, and each one touts a
different product or slightly different approach that the poster thinks is
the best to avoid those risks.

I quickly realized that most of the videos were posted by auto detailers.
I'm still nervous about the potential unintended consequences of a novice
like me using the wrong product, or using the right product wrongly, so I'm
going to take it to a local detailer to see if this is an easy fix for
someone with experience. I suspect it is, and it might even be easy for
me, but this frame is too nice for me to risk making worse with my
inexperience. I wish I had a beater bike to practice on but I don't.

I'll report back and let y'all know what happens. Hopefully there's a
happy ending ahead.

Re: [RBW] Re: Black cyclists

2019-06-12 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Mark,

My stance is that differences attributed to race are often differences in
culture. That's it. They're cultural differences, not racial differences.
You peeled a couple of layers away from that to tease out some specific
factors that might *create* cultural differences, and I don't disagree with
them. Your points about football and basketball versus golf et al. are
good ones and are probably valid, but my point wasn't to dissect the
*reasons* for differences, only to point out that they *exist* and that
people confuse them.

Interesting, by the way, that you mentioned Major Taylor given his
environment growing up. A lone example doesn't prove anything, but it's
consistent with my premise.

By the way, I didn't say black people don't like riding bikes, but I think
you already know that.

Re: [RBW] Re: Black cyclists

2019-06-11 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
These kinds of discussions confuse race with culture. The purported
paucity of black cyclists is a cultural phenomenon, not a racial
phenomenon. Race is genetic and affects physical characteristics, culture
is learned. We're not born cyclists, we have to learn it.

So there aren't many black cyclists---so what? It's not their thing. They
have other things. Their things aren't my things, and they're not trying
to get me involved in their things because they're their things and they
don't care that they're not my things, too. Sociology PhD's working for
universities can get grant money to study these kinds of disparities and
publish the results and we can all read 'em with interest, but it doesn't
change the fact that different cultures gravitate to different things, and
there's nothing wrong with it. It's just the way it is, and it's
interesting to know it and acknowledge it, but there's no need to "fix" it.
I know this bothers Grant (there's my Riv content!), and he can have his
issue with it but I don't share his concern. I'm not offended by his
concern over it and I don't think any less of him for it.

When I lived in California in the 90's I learned that 90% of the donut
shops in that state were owned by Cambodians. Almost all of the women
working in manicure shops are from Vietnam. Most NBA and NFL players are
black, but few hockey players, race car drivers, or professional golfers
are. In the absence of limits, a large fraction of the students at
top-tier US universities are Asian. These concentrations are way out of
whack with the groups' representation in the general population. Why is it
like that? 'Cause it is, that's why, and it's fine. Nobody's being shut
out, except maybe the non-Asians who can't get into the supposed "elite"
universities 'cause too many slots are taken up by the Asians, but the
Asians get those slots because they've earned them through hard work, which
is a *cultural* advantage they have over whites and blacks and Hispanics.

Really, there's much ado about nothing here. Like Patrick, I've been kinda
fascinated by the concentration of certain races and nationalities in
certain professions ever since I learned about those California
Cambodians---but as an observer, not as someone who thinks it's evidence of
something we need to fix.

Finally, there's nothing wrong or offensive about Patrick's post. What
flows to the keyboard starts in the mind, and Patrick doesn't *think* in a
way that would let him post something offensive. Sochill. No need for
anyone to get their panties in a twist over this.

Re: [RBW] First Rivendell — sizing question

2019-06-06 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
I won't weigh in on bike weight or specific models, but I've learned to
stay away from the edges of a recommended PBH range. My first Riv was a
60cm first-generation Sam Hillborne for which my PBH of 88 cm was at the
lower boundary of the range (and also at the upper boundary of the
recommended range for the 56cm size). I test rode both sizes, and while
both felt good I had Riv's mantra of "go bigger" going through my mind so
bought the 60 cm. I could never love it, but later bought a 58cm for which
I was in the middle of the PBH range and I love that one. The differences
are subtle in a way I can't articulate, but one is good and the other is
great. There may have been other differences between the generations, but
I think most of it comes down to sizing.

In retrospect, neither size of that Gen1 Hillborne was the right bike for
me because I was the edge of the PBH range for both. When Riv introduces
new models or sizes now, I look first at the recommended range and if I'm
not in the middle then I don't consider it. That knocks some models out of
contention right away, but I still manage to find enough bikes to fit my
needs (and by "needs" I mean "wants").

[RBW] Re: Closest geared Riv to QuickOne?

2019-05-11 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Ted,

The SO doesn't seem to sync with me quick as well as the QB or the AHH.
When I ride the QB or AHH I think I'm riding the perfect bike, but the SO
is just good. I think the most likely reason for the difference is the
tires. The builds of all 3 and my positions on all 3 are similar---all
have drop handlebars that are even with or just slightly above the
saddle---but I have 38mm Compass tires on the QB, cream 35mm Delta Cruisers
on the SO, and Jack Brown greens on the Hilsen. The Compass tires came on
the QB and it's my first experience with them, but their feel on the QB has
made me think there might be something valid behind all the hype. The SO
and QB are at different locations so I can't compare them side-by-side or
experiment with tire swaps, or else I'd do that to test my hypothesis.

Yes, that's his question.

I'm not the font of Riv-knowledge that others on this forum are, but I have

*should* be similar---seems to me the Hilsen should be a bit stouter---but
to me they feel similar.

Re: [RBW] Dynamo lights

2019-05-09 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Leah. When I've traveled and bought stuff out of state, the rule has
always been that if I take it with me, then I pay the tax, and if I have it
shipped then I don't. I doubt California would be any different. It's
always a question of how much to ship versus how much is the tax.

I bought a bike once from an out-of-state dealer---my first Riv, in
fact---and he was kind enough to drive it over the state line into my state
so I could take delivery and not pay the tax. Very kind of him. I
suggested that I pick it up from him in *his* state and we could *say* that
he drove it over the line, but he wanted to do it the honest way. Neither
of those states was California, but again---I can't imagine that California
would be any more lenient, although they might be stricter.

I appreciate the information in this thread. I use a Garmin Touring Edge
that's useful, but I use it with some trepidation because it's not been
entirely accurate over the years.

I tour on paved roads and bike trails. I want to put in my destination and
have the navigator route me from here to there. If I go off the route---on
purpose or by accident---I want the navigator to "recalculate" and guide me
back to the route. I do not want to rely on my cell phone; I want that in
my saddlebag in airplane mode. The Garmin Edge Touring does all that, it
just doesn't always do it correctly.

Will the Elemnt do all that? I get the impression from this thread that it
doesn't think on the fly, so if I go off the route it's up to me to find my
way back.

[RBW] Re: No love for the Albastache?

2018-11-09 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks for WETH for the pic of his Cheviot and to Bill Lindsey for his
recent review of Albastache bars on his Roadini in another post. I've
followed this thread with interest because I've had an Albastache bar
sitting in the garage since last spring and didn't know what to do with it.
I've always liked the *idea* and quirkiness of the Mustache and the
Albastache is kind of a Mustache but New and Improved (so I've read), so I
bought an Albastache thinking I'd try it but then couldn't figure out what
bike to swap it onto because I'm happy with all my current set-ups so why
fix what ain't broke---right?

Except I'm *not* happy with them all, which hit me when I saw WETH's
Cheviot! I've tried various uprights on my Cheviot, eventually going with
Albatross bars that are set up relatively aggressively and are okay but not
totally enamoring to me. Because (I think) of those bars I'm kinda
apathetic about the Cheviot---I don't *dis*like it, but I don't like it
*much*---and seeing the Cheviot/Albastache combo and reading Bill's review
made me realize that that may be my ticket to Cheviot bliss! I really
really *really* wanna like the Cheviot, and I've remained optimistic that
somehow I'll find a way to achieve thatand could this be it? I'll give
it a shot.

2018-11-08 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
I agree with you in theory, but: 1) I don't like the looks of the ones I've
seen, and 2) they're more expensive than a stem/riser combo, especially if
you need more than one stem during fitting. If you're in trial-and-error
mode then modular is an advantage. But if (for example) Nitto made one
that looked like their Technomic- or Pearl-style stems with a removable
face, I'd buy it.

[RBW] Re: Threadless versus threaded stems -- convenience summary

2018-11-07 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
I get the best of both worlds on about half my bikes by using a threadless
stem and stem riser. The stem is threadless and has a removable faceplate
so I can swap the stem without stripping the bars. It's attached to a
riser that's essentially a threaded quill stem without the extension. A
link to Velo-Orange's option is below, but others make them as well (Soma
is the other one I use when I need one that's longer than VO's). It's not
as elegant as a classic quill stem, but oh man, the added convenience
overwhelms that drawback for most bikes.

If you don't want to live with one forever, it's at least a great option to
let you dial in your stem dimensions before that one final set-up that
requires you to strip and retape.

I'm firmly in the Golden Ager camp. I have a Homer, a Quickbeam, a
SimpleOne, a Frank Jones Sr, a Cheviot, and a couple of Sams. Golden-Age
era models that I've never owned but am smitten with are the Saluki, the
Bleriot, the Ram, the Rodeo, and the MUSA Atlantis, and I may dabble in one
or two of those models but I need to strive for N-1, or at worst N+0, at
least for awhile. Those wanna-dabble-in-'em models are sorta redundant to
models I own now, but that hasn't stopped me before.

I eschew double top tubes, so that's out. And while I love the idea of the
Proto-Riv era, weren't they limited to thinner tires, like 28mm max in some
(or most) cases?

Dave

Nothing loaded when I clicked your link so I can't comment on the

[RBW] Re: Is a 6% change in gearing noticeable?

2018-08-06 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks, all, for the feedback. I was planning to try a 17 first then
increase to 18 if that wasn't enough---as Peter suggested---but would have
jumped straight to 18 if folks told me to not bother with a measly 6%
change, that I'd need more than that to do what I said I want to do. But
I'm reading the opposite, which is yeah, you'll notice the difference, so
I'll try a 17.

Deacon, I thought about a flip-flop, and thought someone might mention it,
but I want to keep the set-up simple and want the change to be as minimal
as possible. I tend to overcomplicate things bike-related and want to
avoid it this time.

I should say here, because I've not said it anywhere else, that I bought a
single speed as an experiment based mainly on the glowing reviews online
about the concept. I didn't have any real preconceptions about how much I
would or wouldn't like it *except* that I thought I might find it limiting.
I was wrong; I love the bike, the ride, and the simplicity, and understand
now why the Quickbeam and Simpleone are such beloved models.

Thanks again to those who responded.

[RBW] Is a 6% change in gearing noticeable?

2018-08-06 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi all. One of the bikes I brought with me to Boston when I moved was a
Quickbeam with 38mm tires, 42 teeth in front and 16 in back. Sheldon puts
it that 71.7 inches. That worked well on the long, straight, and
relatively uninterrupted roads north of Indianapolis, but I now find it too
high because of the traffic and the congestion on paths. I have to stop
and go much more often and don't go as fast even when I am riding, and I
want to lower the gearing to adjust for these new limitations. Mainly I
want to be able to get up to speed faster and easier when taking off from a
red light, but also my overall cruising speed is slower because of the
vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

If I go from 16 to 17 teeth in back then the gear goes from 71.7 to 67.5
inches, a 6.3% reduction. Going from 16 to 18 teeth sends me down to 63.7
inches, an 11.2% reduction. I know I'll feel the change from 16 to 18, but
in your experience would I notice a 6% reduction from 16 to 17, or is that
too small a jump to make any practical difference? Any recommendations
from the single-speeders out there?

Thanks.

it's made of canvas by the hands of 2 magic elves in California. Acorns
are usually out of stock, but I just checked and khaki is in stock as I

Hugh, I've wondered the same thing. I'd be interested in a 60cm or 61cm
Saluki---I can't remember if they come in odd or even sizes---but haven't
seen one become available since I started watching. I have a 700c Hilsen
and love it, and would like to try a 650b Saluki that would let me put even
fatter tires on it. I agree with Sky that the Hilsen and Saluki are
identical if they're both 650b, but in my size the wheel sizes differ.

I recall a post from a few months ago in which someone described a NOS
frame they'd bought from Rivendell that wasn't labeled, and Riv told her
that it was a Saluki or Hilsen, take your pick because they're the same.
If that came from Riv than it's proof enough to me that the models are the
same.

[RBW] Re: Mavic Open Pro and dynamo wheel question

2017-09-02 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm not a wheel or rim expert, but my impression of the Open Pro is that
it's more suitable for racier bikes, and is not the best choice for rando
or touring bikes because it's not as hardy as other choices. The
randonneurs and tourists are the folks who tend to gravitate to dynamo
hubs, and they usually want something tougher than the Open Pro. So I
don't see any problem with lacing a dynamo hub to an Open Pro rim, but I
don't think they suit the same objective.

Thanks, Keith. At the top it says "local pickup only," and I didn't see
the contradictory bit at the end of the description. I guess I need to go
back and look at it more carefully.

I saw it and considered it for about 3 seconds until I saw that it's

For those of us without an Instagram account, it'd be nice if you could
post pictures of the bike you're describing.

No offense, Carla, but if you're putting something out there for sale then
you need to set a price. If you don't want to do that then I suggest eBay.

[RBW] Re: How much drop from the bar can I get out of a Berthoud decaleur?

2017-08-15 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Ron. I've been curious about an aspect of decaleur use and this is
perfect time to ask.

I use Acorn front bags with the stabilizer straps that came with it, looped
around my drop handlebars below the brake hoods. When the lid is closed,
the top is laying over the bag's opening and the rearward flap slips down
behind the bag and I fasten the elastic band to the hook on the bag. In
your picture and in many other pictures I've seen of decaleurs installed,
the 2 bars going from the stem to the bag occupy the same space as the lid
flap does when it's closed.

How do you handle this---do you always leave your lid unfastened and never
loop it in?

[RBW] Re: Hitch rack recommendations?

2017-08-15 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
I use a Transit rack that I got for $200 from Performance a few years ago.
It looks exactly like the 2-bike version of the Hollywood rack that Weth
linked to above, and I love it except for one thing: I have to secure it
with a strap leading from the pole to the front edge of the trunk,
tightened down to prevent bouncing. The strap comes with the rack, but
it's a minor hassle to install and prevents access to the trunk while it's
installed. The link to the Hollywood says it "features patented 'no
wobble-no tools' hitch tightening system" which would make this perfect for
my bikes, all of which have fenders. I'm going to look more into the
Hollywood when I get a chance.
