This is easily the winner for single greatest injection of personalized
Easter Eggs in one project that I've ever seen... that is for sure (!)
It simply has to be a "best of show" contender somewhere.

[RBW] Re: Drops vs albatross. Easy to swap or do I need two bikes?

2024-05-01 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
First off: no one here is going to try and talk you out of two bikes ... :)

However, a single bike with an alternate set of bars isn't a bad idea at
all.
As suggested in the thread: down tube shifters are the way to go for ease
of swapping without having to touch with your shifting set up.
Center pull brakes also make for an easy quick change.
My method is to have two complete bar & stem cockpits (an upright and a
drop bar set up) - each with front and rear brake levers, cables, housings,
ferrules and cable hangers intact.
Once you get your fit and braking dialed in swapping really becomes a
fairly no-nonsense 20 to 25 minute exercise thanks to a few turns of your
barrel adjusters here and there.

with albatross bars for upright lazy bike path rides.
Is there a way to quickly/easily swap handlebars or are two bikes
 inevitable?
Would a Sam with drops and an appaloosa or atlantis w/ albatross be a
good combo or is that too much overlap?

Registration opened this week, and I signed up.
I've got my lodging and flight booked as well.

This will be my first trip to NYC since I was a kid, 50 years ago. I
won't be bringing my Riv (Bringing the Ritchey Breakaway), but I'll be
there for a week, staying in midtown not far from ride start.
I'd love to meet up with others while I'm there, get recommendations on
where to ride, cheap food, coffee, bike shops, etc.

Anyone else here doing the ride?

[RBW] Re: Best mitten design for very cold weather

2023-09-30 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
I"m a Lobster Mitt man, myself. I commute through the winters in NYC and
Pearl Izumi has been the go-to. I think I'm on my third pair in around 25
years or so. They clean up well in the washer, hang dry - never the dryer
(ask me how I know). The upper cuff isn't too annoying with various
jackets, etc. I switch over to them when the temps drop to the low 30's.
They aren't perfect below say, 10 degrees - but they're still pretty good -
and for sure, I try to keep my trips short when it's below 10 degrees
anyway.

They've evolved over the years - I'm about to try out a new pair this
winter. I purchased them from Tri-Sports last Spring when they were on sale
at $42.99. It looks like they're back up to full retail price again but
maybe search around for a better price if you're interested.

Great stories, as usual - I'm pretty sure I remember suggesting that you
should consider converting that ol' Betty Foy into your drop bar go-fast

2022-02-10 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
Joe - I have that same hub (or a T-11 or something) but yeah, it turned me
off to loud hubs for good:

1. For the small percentage of riding that I get to do in the woods I found
it really annoying, like, "no talking in the library" annoying!
2. When I had my bike on the stand doing tune ups or whatever the thing
would be so loud I couldn't hear myself think!

Honestly, it even bugged me in NYC where I ride daily .. and that's really
saying something. Now it hangs in the garage collecting dust ...

How's that for old man grouchy?

like this, I'd want company too...and it doesn't matter how long it takes.
Ideally I'd do some kind of out-and-back into the wind in the AM and
tailwind for the PM but sometimes it doesn't work out that way. I'd have
 to
work up to it , though

Yes, Rivs are fine bikes. I'd probably use my Road with drop bars...my
other ones have moustache and choco; after 50 miles I'm missing drop bars.

But enough about me...congratulations to all of you!

I know that excitement - and I know the sleeplessness - or restless sleep
it produces. The all-night-in-your-head conversations regarding that one
precious object. It's an odd sensation to balance when we all know the ups
and downs of contemporary life. The constant dance of need to balance the
bigger things ... the "really" important stuff: family, health, etc. And
yes, sometimes I do feel guilt over the covet ... but oh man (!) what it
does for the soul to search and find (!) I truly hope everyone can
experience that one small personal inner joy over something, sometime in
their lives that Leah just perfectly encapsulated.

That's a beautiful gesture, Daniel. Attached a link to a free shipping
label. If you're not in a rush, use it and send us your rolls. Just add a
note to me and we'll process them for free. D/M me and we'll sort out a
significant discount for full roll scanning and return shipping as well
- and in the spirit of Daniel's gesture, this goes for everyone on the list
whether he sent you the film or not.

We're doing our best here to preserve our chemistry with the goal to
ultimately bring all of our employees back & reopen when we're allowed. We
did a "closed door" processing run yesterday and our customers delivered
triple what we expected ... all with no customer service, no cash
transactions, pick-up outside the door, etc (!) There was a lot of love
there and we're extremely grateful.

Stay strong (and sane) everyone !!!

Re: [RBW] Chain rubbing rear tire on Clem.

2020-02-25 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
I guess it depends on how you use your bike and how chill a human you are.
Me, I tend to be less chill about things like that. It shouldn't happen on
a bike that's supposedly spec'd for tires that big (or quite frankly, any
properly designed bike). If it's just a matter of spacers not being
installed on the cassette then that's an easy fix. I wouldn't be opposed to
1mm to 1.5mm spacers on a BB shell either .. or flat out changing the BB
spindle length. But otherwise no. I could not stand for chain rub on a tire
... even in a lightly used gear.

I'm 99.9% sure you can't fit 47's and fenders on a Chev ... so that leaves
you in the 42 / 1.75 tire with fenders category. We're running Hetres and
V/O Snakeskin fenders (and those are technically only 50 but it's working)
on a 55. I could probably scare up a few pics of the fit if you're
interested

Re: [RBW] Re: A Lesson: When buying a vehicle that will transport a Clem, measure twice and buy once.

2019-10-31 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
Good point on the height. The thought of needing step ladder and an
articulated rear rack for bikes makes me crazy.

I checked with VW, btw. The Passat has already been discontinued. I should
also note that both Audi and BMW still offer their full size wagons to the
European markets. Heck, even Mercedes Benz offers *three* engine packages
to the Canadian market for their E450 wagon.

We're nutty here in the USA.

[RBW] Re: A Lesson: When buying a vehicle that will transport a Clem, measure twice and buy once.

2019-10-31 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
Personally, I LOVE station wagons and I think, cool is what you make
it. We've been in various V-Series Volvo wagons for the past 22 years. The
only bike that doesn't slide in whole into the back with the rear seats
folded down is my wife's ridiculously long Cheviot. For that land yacht, I
have to use the roof rack.

It's new car time in our house though ... the current (2007) wagon is
getting the boot and currently there's bit of a debate as to whether we're
going to switch brands before we're both rolling around in wheelchairs! I
don't see a minivan in our future, though (my ego might be too fragile for
that) but I also couldn't be less enthused when looking at the current crop
of "crossover" SUV's. Most, as noted here already aren't any bigger than
our wagons ... most, in fact, are smaller! Unfortunately, true full size
wagons are few and far between here in the USA these days.

I also haven't had a car without a roof rack in over 25 years now.
Practically everything ends up on top at some point: paddle boards,
sailboats, skis, bikes, furniture, and of course, christmas trees. I find
it funny that most car salesmen aren't prepared for our questions about
what will fit and where ... it seems like a lot of folks buy those big ol'
SUV's and drive 'em around full of air

Re: [RBW] Re: All Rounder

2019-09-25 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
Yep Mark -- perfectly stated and well understood. And yet, we fawn all over
the simple Grant appointed 26" wide clearance level top tube model when it
shows up. It feels like an ethos thing to me. I realize that the Atlantis
got the nod for it ... but clearly, the All Rounder (and even the Hunq)
still tug at the heart strings around here.

[RBW] Re: WTB -- BOBish bike. And -- thoughts on this Romlus FS?

2019-08-27 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
Like Kai says: the Jumble is worth a look. On the other hand - that's not a
terrible deal for a canti 700c all-roadish bike that appears to fit 35's.
Also considering that it's a Riv and may likely have that silky-magic Riv
feel. Anyone know max tire size on a Rom? If it fits 38's then I might not
hesitate.

Is that $250.00 the firm moving forward price, I wonder?

rack way more versatile -- but that's my running complaint about a lot of
platform racks on the market today. I get the need for a back stop when

Re: [RBW] First Rivendell — sizing question

2019-06-05 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
You'd have to work pretty damn hard to get either of those three models
anywhere near 18lbs and fitted for practical commuting. I'd wager it's
impossible, actually .. and anyway, that's not the Riv ethos. The Sam or
Homer with fenders, at least one rack and a basket and a full compliment of
mid to upper tier parts: drive train, cockpit, rim, hubs, tires, etc. is at
best going to run 25 lbs (+) minimum. Nothing wrong with that ... but by
minimum I mean closer to 28 to 30 in real world weight.

[RBW] Re: New Wavie Bar Photos

2018-11-28 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
I like the "idea" of this bar and have been toying with pulling the trigger
on a MAP/Ahearne. I did just set up a Billie to replace a Choco Norm on my
daily ride ... but again, I keep thinking about those MAP's. I've tried
other bars with that shape but haven't been pleased as they're usually too
shallow in the return. I do like the return (or sweep) angles of Alba's,
Choco's and the new Billie even though I find myself riding towards the
front of those bars the majority of the time (it's really the super slow
times and weird tight NYC traffic traversing where the upright full sweep
does come in handy for me).

So that said, using the incredibly helpful whatbars.com I've come to think
that the new Velo Orange Curvy One bar looks possibly like an even a better
fit for me than the MAP. And since RIV is working closely with whatbars.com
now I suspect that they'll forward a drawing of the Wavie to them soon
enough to make a comparison.

My main hesitation with the V/O bar is that 31.8 clamp! I mean, really ...
well, that and the fact that all of these bars at 610 to 660 are getting
pretty darn wide for a city boy -- and I used to think Alba's were wide for
gawds sake.

Seems crystal clear to the point of maybe even too much information
necessary -- to me, anyway ...

I run an I-XQ and Son Deluxe Wide Body on my daily ride here in NYC.
Considering how many riders use blinking lights in my town the second or
two of flicker at spin up almost makes me feel like one of the regulars!
And I say spin up because it never flickers at normal rolling speed, which,
often isn't all that fast as I thread my way through traffic and bike path
congestion, etc it flickers a little at walking speed too, but that's
not an issue for me either.

[RBW] Re: New SimWorks rack

I see that now -- I didn't bother to click the link because I'd just to
Crust in August and Matt didn't mention a new rack coming (he's sneaky like
that, I guess). That one is interesting but wouldn't have worked for me
anyway as I'm running brazed on CP rim brakes and they tend to block
forward access to the center hole on the crown.

2018-10-10 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
I like that Crust Rack exactly because it doesn't have a diving board (and
I like the platform size for the basket, too). The Crust works off a pretty
smart "truss" or bracket that attaches to the center hole on a fork crown.
That bracket is quite beefy and spreads the load outward similar to a fork
with attachment points on top of the crown on either side of the head tube.
I was able to run the bracket behind a set of Mafac Raids, even. It's a
solid rack but not overly heavy -- the stainless steel struts are heavy
gauge hollow tubing with nicely welded attachment points -- and the
hardware is top notch. The platform has plenty of attachment points as well
for lights and/or lowrider racks. And the 4 struts ought to make anyone
paranoid about rack failure feel safe, too. I'm not totally crazy about the
industrial / "erector set" aesthetic overall but it works with the build
style of the particular bike I have it on now.

[RBW] Re: OT: Kids' bikes. Islabikes is closing.

2018-10-03 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
We went with a Fairdale Weekender Archer when my son hit 5' 1" or so -- the
Adult small size was designed around 27.5 (650b) wheels and with it's
sloping top tube was a perfect "grow into" size. We never did install racks
or fenders but there were plenty of attachment points on the fork and seat
stays as well as both drop outs. Of course, he grew 4" that year and
another 3" the next and already it's too small(ish). He's also going on 14
and pretty much only riding in the summer anymore ... sigh. I'm betting I
can switch out the stem and maybe do a bar swap of some sort and he'll eek
out another summer on it but then he'll likely have outgrown my bikes
as well since he's already at least 1/2" taller than me!

[RBW] Re: Help with fenders

2018-10-01 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
Shoji's links are spot on -- I'd say grab a coffee (or a beer) and read
through them. Getting your hands on the JP Weigel / BQ article would be
very helpful as well.

My 2 cents: I'd suggest a sharp awl as opposed to drilling. Alu fenders are
super soft and a small round file will remove the burr from the awl easily
enough.

[RBW] Re: Film Processing

2018-10-01 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
I run a lab in NYC:

LTI-Lightside (www.lti-lightside.com)

We run a lot of C-41 and B+W film, daily -- we no longer handle E-6,
though. I've looked through the Darkroom.com site and give them a thumbs up
for going after the mail-in market. I think the Riv guys use them and I'm
guessing they do a good job -- and their prices are good, too. I'm not
normally in the habit of praising my competitors (but we're really not in
the same market) -- and I haven't used their services so can't actually say
one way or the other but my industry savvy hunch is that they're probably a
safe-bet and unless you're seeing results that you don't like and can
attribute it to them. Again, I'd guess that they're probably one of the
better film processing options out there at this time.

That said -- being a long time reader of this list (and film shooting bike
nerd)) and knowing that many of you are into photography it's always nagged
at the back of my mind that I wish I could offer you all services somehow.
I'd be happy to create discount codes for RGB Owners Bunch readers any time
(though we don't have those fancy pre-paid mailers like the darkroom.com).
Please feel free to take a look through our site and notice that all our
prices are published online, we offer multiple upload to print options and
have a near ten year deep project archive link detailing our customers work
in both fine-art and commercial & advertising categories ...

We also have an instagram account (@lti-lightside) and count none other
than UltraRomance himself as our sole "influencer" ... ha.

Feel free to reach out to me personally if you're interested in anything --
and like I said, I'd be happy to offer up some discounts for like-minded
bikers

(and/or B-Screw depending on how wide of a range you wanted). I'm an
Index-Only guy myself so depending on budget I'd look to Shimano 9 for the
shifter and any number of inexpensive cassette options to clear that part
of the problem up.

[RBW] Re: 90 degree stem

2018-09-05 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
That's a good tip -- I didn't realize what the Dynamic ll (2) was.

SimWorks has a Nitto in silver or black. It's 25.4 (it's a beauty, too)

Velo Orange has one with a 31.8 clamp and removable face plate.

[RBW] WTB: Handbar -- Albatross, Choco Norm or Soma Oxford

2018-08-24 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
(cross Post from internet-bob)

Hey all — I’m looking for an upright swept back 25.4 clamp bar that accepts
bar end shifters. Either of the three named above would be great for me —
it’s for a back-up build so I’m open and will consider alternate
suggestions that fit the bill as well.

Many thanks / jsk (10024 area code)
