[RBW] FS 60cm Simple One and 61cm MUSA Homer

2022-10-30 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
Couple of very special bikes up for sale here folks:

First up is a 60cm Simple One in green

Frame measures:

58cm st c-c
58cm tt c-c
85cm standover

Cranks are 43/34

Rear hub has a dingle 17/19 FW on one side and 21 FW on the other. You can
use the large ring with the dingle and small ring with the 21. Pretty cool
set-up!!!

Suzue hubs, Atlas rims, 32H f, wheels built by Rich, Soma Shikoros 700x42

Does not come with saddle and light mount but does come with everything
else (pedals, spurcycle bell, handlebar bag)

I can't remember the name of the handlebars but they're made by VO. Stem is
a nitto technomic. Rides butter smooth, a very cool bike, nice upright
riding position. Reach out with any questions or anything I missed. Paint
is about right for a bike this age, small chips and scratches not
dings/dents or issues.

$2,200 shipped conus with non-fee payment (paypal f, venmo, cashapp,
zelle) Paypal G also available but add 3%.

_

Next up is one of my grail bikes, an absolute sweetheart.

61cm Made in the USA Homer Hilsen

Measures:

59cm st c-c
58cm tt c-c
86cm standover

Custom french blue with braze on centerpulls and Compass brakes

This frame was built by Waterford.

Super upright zero offset Analog stem with Whisky drops.

Veloce 10 speed groupset.

40/30 rings on a VO crank

12/30 rear cassette

Compass barlow pass 700x38 tires

White Industries hubs, 99% sure they are dyad rims, 32H f

I had a hell of a time figuring out how to get rid of brake squeal in the
rear. I spend many many hours screwing with toe-in. Then I thought the
brakes were too powerful so I had a friend machine me a custom brake
booster. Then I tred lightly scoring the rim and padsand then I read
that the salmon pads that compass brakes come with sometimes squeal with
certain rims. Tested the rear with el cheapo black post brakes and presto,
no more squeal. I ordered new black pads for the rear but they're not set
up perfect. Might take a little time in the stand to get them 100%.

Full disclosure the local guy that built this wheelset got the dish wrong
and it's a couple MM offset to the non-driveside. There needs to be about
2mm shorter spokes on the driveside to fix the dish (or thread the existing
spokes another 2mm). I never noticed a difference, they stayed true and I
never felt anything so I just got lazy and rode it as-is.

Paint is approaching perfect on this one...maybe some small scratches here
or there but otherwise very very nice. Absolutely no dings or major
issues. Rides like an exotic super car yet has a comfortable riding
position. Plush and zippy.

Comes with everything pictured minus saddle.

$3,200 shipped conus with non-fee payment (paypal f, venmo, cashapp,
zelle) Paypal G also available but add 3%.

Combo deal for $5,200

There's pictures and a walk-around video for both of these here:

forgot anything!

[RBW] Re: BikeSnobNYC, 2022 Five Boro NYC Bike tour promo video on Platypus. Reviews of prior tours requested.

2022-02-08 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
+1 on all the advice given so far. It's definitely worth it.

I would add that if you're like me and don't really feel comfortable in big
crowds, don't hesitate to stop at bars/coffee shops for a
refreshment/rest. The rest stops were overwhelming-ish for me and stopping
at a cafe with outdoor seating was more relaxing (while watching all the
riders go by :-)

DIY snacking is better than waiting in big lineups.

DON'T take the ferry back at the end, absolutely park at the finish.

Done with a friend is great. Done with a small group is great. Trying to
do it with a big group was challenging according to friends of mine.

ADVENTURE!

honestly, I was very cold. We arrived the day before, stayed in Manhattan

Staten Island, I met another rider who cycled the 50 miles on an Atlantis.
Years later, I purchased my own Atlantis, recalling how beautiful I
thought the Atlantis I saw that day was. If you love cities, don't love

you have the time, go for this. And, be prepared to smile at your great

[RBW] If Rivendell made a snowboard...

2022-01-23 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
Man I had been eyeing this snowboard for a couple months and finally pulled
the trigger after a demo at out our local "Winterfest"

https://www.burton.com/us/en/p/burton-the-throwback-snowboard/W22-159771.html

It was an absolute blast riding this with the kids in the backyard. One of
my first realizations was the similarity it has with the Rivendell ethos.
No bindings, fancy tech, car rides or lift ticketsyou just wear
whatever you'd wear in the winter and rip around neighborhood hills. A
nice no-fuss approach to fun in the snow. Functionally it's pretty darn
good for a shaped piece of plywood with a laminated snowboard bottom on
it.

It's so fun! Maybe the best purchase I've made in the past year plus...

Thought I'd turn the group on to them as I often flail on outdoor things in
the winter that are as enjoyable as riding my bike in the summer. Can't
wait to explore some hills around the neighborhood.

Cheers! (for the more skeptical folks, I have zero financial or other
motivation to share this other than passing along some winter fun)

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Inventory

2022-01-07 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
As a former *small* shop owner, the only way we existed was "at-once"
ordering and availability. The fact that a reliable supply chain is all
but gone means the small folks are losing money and frustrating customers.

If you believe in small business owners I'd say grapple with the fact that
small business and cash flow is just a reality; now made 1000x more intense
by COVID/supply chain realities.

Cash flow issues were omnipresent for small retail operations. It's a
full-on epidemic with the supply chain issues piled on.

Buy early buy often if you want Riv to stick aroundunless you want
Trek/Specialized branded stores and Amazon to be your only options.

Supply Chain is the latest phrase we all know too well these days. But,
Rivendell needs in my humble non-business owner opinion to buy more
inventory. I seem to remember they like to pay for all purchases without
using a credit line and that seems reasonable at first thought. But, I
think they would increase sales to a large extent if they would bring in
more product. A case in point are the knickers that went up for sale and
sold out in two days! Brass headset spacers are rarely available. The list
 goes on.

Just a thought I had as I was ready to buy a pair of knickers to no

most of this is out of stock, so might be your lucky day if you've been

Re: [RBW] FS MUSA Hunqapillar complete 58cm

2021-02-18 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
Thanks Max!

I know, it's a bit wild that I posted it for sale. We're moving so I've
been going through an existential crisis on materialism. This is quite the
experiment on how I feel before, during and (potentially) after the sale.
It's been an interesting ride in my head these past 24hrs ;-)

I do agree it's not a small amount of money. Considering the build, I
think it's a generous price aimed at a special group of people. I'm equally
surprised it's still for sale.

(especially since Hunqs are currently unobtainium at Riv and they're
pricing for a Waterford-built Rodeo *frame* is $2,800 )

Best,

Alex

Hi Johnny,
Interested in a full bike? I have a similarly spec'd Atlantis so I'm
considering selling what I always thought would be a "forever bike"

I can send more specs and pics if you have interest. As pictured without
stem bag.

$3k shipped, not interested in doing frameset only or taking parts off for
a different price :-)

Re: [RBW] FS: Copenhagen Wheel $1,100

2021-01-12 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
I love(d) mine and I'm missing it greatly as it got passed along to my 82
year old father who's have a blast on his Copenhagenized Clem.

My commute went away with COVID as well.

IMHO they're excellent for everything you can do in less then 10 miles,
15-20 if you're more judicious about using a lower assist level/don't have
heavy loads or very steep hills. These things can be set to cruise at 20+
miles an hour and for me that was always my default setting as it's FUN FUN
FUN FUN FUN. Soul replenishing fun.

It's incredibly natural feeling compared to most other systems I've ridden.

Hope that helps!

Re: [RBW] Re: Is there a Riv-like three speed currently in production?

2020-12-23 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
I have an original Raleigh Tourist ('75) and I've often thought that it's
the only other bike (That I've ridden) that comes close to that long
wheelbase feeling where you kind of "carve" around turns. The rest of the
handling is unlike Riv, Riv is more refined, but that aspect sure is
similar.

I've been lusting after one of these for many years. Does anyone on the
list have one?

If I had more room in the basement I'd try my best to explain to my wife
*again* why it is that I need bikes in duplicate 

[RBW] Wooly Warm Cardigan, Official Fan Boi Status

2020-11-28 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
In case you missed the email update, Riv has a new Wooly Warm sweater
available on their site. So far all sizes look to be still available

https://www.rivbike.com/collections/clothing/products/woolywarm-six-button-high-neck-cardigan

This is my third Wooly Warm and I am officially a fan boi (crewneck, vest
and now cardigan).

Easily the most complemented sweaters I've ever donned, a very handsome
garment. Also thin enough to not "cook" you indoors.

Thought I would throw this out to the group on "Small Business Saturday"
AKA every day.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Apologies if this is old news, we've been a bit occupied up here in

Aside from the color and compatibility (understandable), I'm super happy to
have a low-cost, clutch option, alternative-to-Shimano 8 speed group

https://www.microshift.com/en/introducing-acolyte/

$88 gets you a shifter derailleur and cassette. Paired with the right
crank and you're capable of everything but loaded touring and pedaling
downhill.

[RBW] Re: Color survey! Would love some feedback, getting powder for a Surly Travelers Check

2020-08-10 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
Great question, George!

1.Wet paint would need to be shipped out adding another ~$120 to the price
2. Wet paint is typically $400 plus for one color (for anyone that does it
often and well)
3. Powder is supposedly more durable/more chip-resistant than wet paint.
4. We have an excellent local powder coat specialist that is accustomed to
bike frames that will do a single color frameset for $150, two color for
$225 including a chemical strip AND sandblast prep.
5. Powder is a bit more environmentally friendly and less risk for the
applicator.

Re: [RBW] Seen some Gus builds, no Susies yet....

2020-06-21 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
You gentlemen are all right. I actually have about six different
brands/combinations of square taper BBs that I will experiment with. I
hope to memorialize that process in a blog post so stay tuned.

Since the drive side cup/BB is the same on the Shimano UN55 for either 68
or 73mm modelsthey are stealing the cup-only from a shorter 73mm bottom
bracket because Shimano doesn't make an off-the-shelf 73mm spindle length
long enough for most cranks/this bike.

Essentially the adjustable cup from the 73mm variants is "deeper" so that
the cup reaches the bearing and fully supports it.

On some other brands the adjustable cup doesn't have a lip preventing it
from traveling inside the bottom bracket (Shimano does). You can cheat the
system this way on other brands and use a 68mm BB in a 73mm shell, but it
makes your cranks a little off-center.

I also scored a NOS three piece Tange BB that *might* be the right length.

All of these different scenarios have to factor in your tire sizethe
bigger you go, your chainline gets pushed outward which can start
eliminating certain crank options.

Hopefully I can make all of this easier to understand in picturesI'm
not really doing it justice in writing.

Happy Father's Day to all you bike dads out there 

[RBW] Re: Center pull/Herse Brake Help

2020-06-02 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
Hi Everyone!

Thanks for weighing in and providing additional ideas.

So I tried the wheel swap and I got squealless, but squeal nonetheless

Next I tried some run of the mill Jagwire black brake padsno squeal.
Nothing. Not a peep.

So I guess my stubbornness got the best of me. I just never thought a pad
swap would do it considering I have the same pads/rim up front. c'est la
vie

BTW @ Nate they are Velocity Dyads

I don't want to pile on the responsiveness of RH because of the time we are
ineveryone gets a pass right now.

Stopping power wise they are among the most powerful rim brake I've
experienced. They are the most beautiful brake around and they have
clearance for days.

Set up IMO is cantankerous, unless you do a lot of them perhaps? One thing
in particular that drove me nuts was the fact that the pinch bolt for the
hanger is 7mm and you need front and back, the pinch bolt on the arm is 9mm
and you need front and back and the brake pad nut is 10mm. That's a lot of
dang wrenches to fiddle with!

I'm a little burnt on these right now so I'll probably just ride those
Jagwire pads until they need changing. I'll try the black mafac pads
somewhere down the line.

PS Here's some Bonus Info on the RH cantis. I will save someone the
headache if they aren't direction readers like me. They require a
particular post that is slightly recessed in the end. That's because the
RH bolts have a small shoulder where the threads transition to the bolt
head (For "strength"). If you tighten them down on the wrong style brake
post and fail to read the directionscongratulations! You now have a
brake for life because the last ~1mm of post has mushroomed around that
shoulder trapping the brake arm on. Ask me how I know 

[RBW] Center pull/Herse Brake Help

2020-05-30 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
Hi All!

Hoping you can help me with your center pull knowledge

Before I start, I tried Jan Heine/RH but I think they are on light staff
and I haven't heard back.

I've got a pair of direct-mount Herse center pulls on my Homer that I
cannot, for the life of me, get the squeal out (rear only).

Here's some things that I've done to try and eliminate the squeal and some
general info.

1. There was some significant deflection of the stay under hard braking so
I had a friend machine a brake booster. Now there is zero deflection. No
change.

2. I get squeal pretty much as soon as the pads touch the rim under any
amount of brake pressure. (Also, off the bike, using the brake lever
engaging the brake and pushing the bike forward under very light pressure).

3. Interestingly if I squeeze the pads by hand and move the bike forward
in the same fashion, no squeal.

4. I must be dampening some kind of vibration in doing so?

5. Toe-in has been increased to the point it cannot be possibly be the
issue? both pads are hitting at the exact same time, both pads are all the
way "back" in the holder (closest to the arm)

6. I've taken a file to the brake pads to remove any contamination (any
time I try something new I hit the pads with a file to eliminate them as a
culprit)

7. I've cleaned the rims with alcohol (after every iteration of
troubleshooting)

8. I've burnished the rims even though they are brand new Velocity Dyads
(followed by righteous cleaning) I've done this at several levels of
"intensity"

Anyone have any tips/tricks I can try?

I'd hate to use a different pad because the Herse pads/holders are so
beautiful but that's probably next on my list.

I haven't changed the straddle cable length or experimented with that yet.

Thank you so much!!! This will make my month if I/we can figure this out...

Cheers,

Alex in Rochester, NY

[RBW] Re: Handling Effects of Shorter Stems (from the OT discussion in a previuos post on the New Sams in Sept)

2020-05-22 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
As a contributor on this topic with very recent experienceI switched from
80mm stem/drop combo to 0mm stem/drop combo without any perceptible drawbacks
so far (other than an oddball aesthetic).

I’d guess I’m in the realm of an albatross or albastache/50-80mm stem with this
new set up.

Re: [RBW] Clem L as an ebike frame?

2020-05-17 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
Which size Clem L? I had measured mine for a Bionx kit and it looks doable
by adding one braze-on south of where they placed the original water bottle
braze ons...

Mind you this is an OG size large Clementine...so could be different than
the current offerings.

I was going to use a brass rivnut for simplicity.

[RBW] FS 1989 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp resto mod

2020-05-15 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
Hey All,
Cross list...I put this on iBob but nobody had interest surprisingly. I
also put it up on the Bay. There's an incredible amount of value in this
bike IMHO and I'd be pumped if a list member got to enjoy it.

I have a minty fresh stumpy resto mod for sale. I built this up at the
same time as another vintage MTB and now my Susie Longbolts is arriving
soon too so I thought I would pass this along.

Here's what's new:

Handbuilt wheelset with VO hubs and Velocity NoBs rims
Paul touring front brake w/ moon unit
Paul Funky Monkey
NOS tektro CNC levers (very cool/rare)
Cables & housing
Deore triple crank
Shimano deore? outboard BB
Deore FD
XT rear derailleur
Shimano 3x7 trigger shifters
ESI xtra chunky grips
Schwalbe racing ralphs
Q tubes
7 speed cassette
NOS hi-rite style saddle adjuster
VP-001 pedals
KMC chain

(~$1,200+ in new parts)

Used parts:
Nitto riser bars
Ritchey force stem
SuperCorsa saddle
XT U-brake

Measurements:
ST 21 c-t
TT 22 c-c
Standover 82cm
Saddle height in photo 77cm

Plenty of beausage on this frame but no major stuff going on. There is one
area in the top tube that has a very very...very slight indentation about
the size of a thumb. I wouldn't call it a dent, you have to put a straight
edge on it to pick it up but I didn't want anyone thinking I was trying to
pull one over on them. The person I bought the frame from didn't disclose
it to me...likely because they didn't know it was there. Tried to take
some pics but they really don't show anything. Likely from some barspin at
some point? I added some pictures of this area on the eBay posting.

If you want an instantaneous trail ripping Stumpjumper with fresh parts,
this is itsuper excellent and fun ride.

$675 as is
$600 if you want to skip the saddle and pedals
Plus actual shipping via Bike Flights (domestic only) (Likely $55-$85
depending on where you are in the country)

Link to some additional pictures below

FYI the “braking assistance” as they refer to it in the app can be adjusted for

[RBW] Re: Copenhagen wheel Rivs vs ebike

2020-05-12 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
Heavy lube and cold temps had that effect on my drivetrain in winter...I think
the free hub has more drag than a standard free hub. Did you strip your chain
of the factory oil they put on it?

I’d apply several rounds of a light lube with lots of solvent in the formula.
Something like clean ride or T9. That might eliminate the resistance causing
the slack chain. I had considered going to a clutch derailleur but I always
forget because I don’t have issues until I switch to heavy lube and get cold
temps (sub freezing)

Hope that helps?

Alex

Been chatting with Riv a little lately about my Susie build.

Seatpost will be 26.8 although not included. The only thing this comes with is
a headset (FSA duron likely)

BB for a Riv Silver double (square taper) is a whopping 127mm axle widthand
a 73mm shell width. Supposedly the shimano un55 doesn’t come in 73x127 however
a 68x127 and swap in an adjustable cup from a 73mm model you’re good to go.
Sunlite makes a 73x127 and phil wood too, so far those are the options I’m
finding...
