[RBW] Re: Rat Trap Pass: reviews? impressions? poetic waxings?

2016-08-19 Thread Beardpapa
I have the standards. I first road them on a loaner bike in Seattle. The
dreamy ride motivated me to build up a bike that could take em. They roll
as fast as the Babyshoe Pass (650B) and Barlow Pass (700) on my other bikes
with even more pillowy float. I haven't tried them on trails or dirt yet.
Highly, highly recommended.

[RBW] Re: advice on crank / bb selection

2010-09-26 Thread Beardpapa
I had the exact same issue after switching to longer cranks. ITB pain
kicked in at about 40 miles. After several weeks of pain, rollers,
frustration, and lowering my saddle, the saddle height seemed to be
the main issue. I had not lowered saddle enough to compensate for the
longer crank. I was able to ride 100 miles last week pain free.

Cru crank providing the chain stays allow a narrow bottom bracket.  If
you want a wider Q factor, you only need insert a wider bb.

Having said that, today, after not having been on my bike for a couple
weeks, I rode a new bike with about 5-7 wider tread than my old bike.
I noticed the difference immediately in my foot placement but put it
out of my mind and rode in a spirited ( for me ! ) manner.  That is, I
applied myself with some effort, and pedaled at times from the knee,
if that makes sense, and at times from the hip.  At the end of the
ride the most noticeable thing for me was a lack of left knee pain
that had been plaguing me for some time.  What I initially noticed
with some annoyance turned out to be a blessing in disguise.  But
we'll see - it's really too soon to say anything definitive.

Which is to say, your knee pain was possibly improved by going to a

[RBW] Re: What is the level of your XO-1 nostalgia?

2010-05-15 Thread Beardpapa
In my opinion, it's an entry level path into the Rivendell world.
Sure the lugs aren't as pretty and crude compared to a new Riv, but I
picked up my xo-1 for $300, complete. I'm also not worried when I
commute or when I lock the bike up on a Saturday night around town. My
Riv owning friends here in town don't share that same sense of ease.
That being said, there's no way I'd drop $1500+ for an XO-1.

On May 14, 1:18 pm, cm chrispmur...@hotmail.com wrote:
About a year ago I passed on a RB1 for $100. It was all original, my
size,  and had seen about 1000 miles total. It was red, forget the
year and size but it must have been around a 55 cuz it fit me. I was
in high school when B-stone closed, so the bikes were never part of my
cycling past. To me, they are pretty much old bikes, nice old bikes,
 but old bikes.

If I had the chance to buy it again, would I? Yeah, but only to try to
get it to someone who would appreciate what it was and ride the heck
 out it.

 Cheers!

Here /aare some photos from last night's S24O going from East
Austin to Driftwood, TX. The plan was a ride out to the legendary
Salt Lick BBQ and spend the night across the highway at Camp Ben.
Unfortunately, following a temperate 30 mile ride out to Salt Lick, we
were welcomed by a misty evening. Since we were planning to open-air
it and didn't have tents with us, we talked the manager into letting
us crash under their covered pavilion. All in all, a great night and
an enjoyable 60ish mile ride.

Agreed. I'm running near the same setup on my XO-1. Try angling the

I love my Quickbeam.  I've been riding it as a daily commuter in San

tearing around the city and hauling groceries, I found myself wanting
to try out a more upright position.

 Enter the Jitensha bars...

I loved the Quickbeam before, yeah, but the new bars have taken it to
another level altogether.  Upright, but still fast feeling with
incredible control, even with a loaded front basket.  There far enough
out that I can still get decent leverage when climbing out of the
saddle.  Anyway, if you're considering going a little swept back and
upright, but don't want to go as far as the albatross bars, I highly
recommend giving the Jitensha's a shot.  Here're a couple of shots:

The perception of brilliance will depend a lot on the price.  Some
people will think that the refurbished frameset has to be less than

overpriced.  Some others will take Grant's 'better than new' teaser at
face value and will be happy to pay nearly retail and be happy with
the value.  I applaud the recycling aspect.  I give a standing O for
the upcycling aspect.  I also love the idea of buying a one of a kind
thing.  Knowing what little I do about Riv's operating costs, I am
expecting the refurbs to be really close to full retail value and full
retail price.  For exactly the same reasons that the 'frame specials'

I was using a MacBook Air for a while, and that worked.

the simplicity and functionality of the the basket and sack, although I

this combination now for a few months.  I just cleaned the grunge off

scrubbing, however, and it's back to it's quiet, smooth self.

On really crappy days, I ride my old mountain bike, and it's like night

[RBW] Re: Best Bag ever

2009-08-03 Thread Beardpapa

I would definitely get one. Let us know how it goes!

William Henderson wrote:
Just the other day I was discussing bags with R., envisioning the
perfect bag for urban use. It would be easy to attach, hold just
enough, be stylish and practical off the bike, be mostly waterproof...

I was trying to convince her to make the first, but she wasn't sure.
Well, the next day she was walking down a quiet avenue in the magic
morning fog and found the Best Bag Ever. It exactly fits the criteria
above, and I've never seen anything like it. The main pouch holds a
book, an apple (but not an Apple), pump and spare, a light sweater and
your keys. A waxed canvas top piece folds over and secures behind a
leather band, ingeniously holding the shoulder strap in place when the
bag is on your bike. Two leather straps quickly snap onto the rack
and snap off even easier (just tug). Far quicker than Riv's leather
straps, but more classic and secure-seeming than velcro. On the
outside there are two loops originally for godknowswhat that now fit a
u-lock perfectly. The whole thing is so elegant and clean, the work
of an era past – and yet it seems clearly designed for the modern
needs of bicycle transportation. We wonder if it was originally an
equestrian accessory. The only distinguishing marks are the
engravings on the leather stiffener: H BURKHARDT AADORF.

Now obviously this is not only a wonderful gift from some two-wheeled
gypsy goddess, but a sign that R. can and must copy and produce such a
bag for the rest of us. Though it is without her consent, I'd like to
see a show of hands of how many out there might be interested in such
a bag. It would be hand crafted here in San Francisco, would be
available for a Rivish but reasonable price, and might be available in
a slightly larger version for toting a laptop. If enough of you are
interested, I'll try to make sure it happens. Even if she declines,
I'll at least take it to Riv and see if they can make good on it.

I've got the tservs PTs with the reflective strip on our tandem. They
are more rigid than the skin-wall paselas but they ride nicely. 32s
are pretty true to size on a velocity dyad.

PJW has some great pics athttp://peterwhitecycles.com/carradice.asp

 2. Robert Beckman Front and Rear Panniers w/ Handlebar Bag and
 raincovers $300
I bought this very lightly used set a couple of years ago with the
intention of retrofitting them with Ortlieb’s mounting system.  Never
got around to it, so they have been sitting in the closet.  Most
similar to the Discovery Series on Beckman’s old website (http://
tinyurl.com/nb9f8g) The mounting system is for Bruce Gordon racks.
Check out the pictures and ask me any questions.  Signed and dated by
RB.  Handlebar bag uses the venerable Klickfix attachment system. I’m
selling these as a set, NOT separately.  To be clear, these will not
attach to Nitto Racks as they are.  With the addition of an
aftermarket system (such as Arkel’s or Ortlieb’s) they will fit most
any rack.  As good a pannier set as you can buy, and handmade in the
US.  Too nice to sit in my closet any longer.

Things I want to buy or trade for:
 1. 10cm Nitto Technomic Deluxe Stem, 26mm clamp
 2. 46cm Nitto Noodle Handlebars, 26mm clamp

 6. Schmidt SON28 dynohub
 7. Schwalbe 650b Marathon tires (x2)
 8. Grip King Pedals
 9. Roly Poly tires new (x2)

 3. 170mm Sugino XD Crankset
 4. 650b Velocity Synergy rims, sym and asym.
 5. Paul Racer Centerpull Brakes (bolt-on, not braze-on)
 6. Schmidt SON28 dynohub
 7. Schwalbe 650b Marathon tires (x2)
 8. Grip King Pedals
 9. Roly Poly tires new (x2)

[RBW] Austin Rivendell Owners?

2009-05-24 Thread Beardpapa

I'm new to the forums here but wondering how many Austin (TX)
Rivendell riders are out there? I'd love to organize a monthly ride.
I thought I'd throw this out there and see if anyone bites. Look
forward to meeting you all.

[RBW] Re: FS: Riv. AR Serial #K95039

2009-05-24 Thread Beardpapa

If only this fit me

On May 24, 11:04 am, Allan Stoekl bruno.sto...@gmail.com wrote:
For Sale: Rivendell All-Rounder, probably the first one built (Oct.,
95). Built by Waterford, with Waterford sticker on left chainstay.

This bike was the prototype for the AR, used by Grant Peterson as a
commuter for several years, sold to me 4/99, and used by me as a
commuter for about 4 years. Total mileage on the bike is about 5-6000
 miles.

Top Tube 57.5cm, Seat Tube 55cm

Original Paint: Burnt Orange, with grey head tube. Old style Riv
decals and placement (no seat tube decals).

Tubing: Reynolds 753 frame, 531 Forks. Tubing stickers in French (for
 some reason).

Frame includes braze ons for front and rear racks.

Some of the components are the original Riv component mix of the mid
 90s:

 Mavic Le Mond triplized crank
 Original BB (Don't know make)
Rear Wheel: Mavic 217 rim, Winkel Wheel with Bullseye Hub
 Front Derailleur: Shimano XT
 Headset: Stronglight

Other components have been substituted by me:

Front Wheel: Mavic 238 Rim, Shimano Nexus Power generating hub
 Handlebars: Riv. Moustache
 Seatpost: Kalloy
 Stem: Nitto 7cm
Tires: Venerable Avocet Cross, 26x1.5, probably should be replaced
Brake levers: Dia Compe, work with V Brakes
 Brakes:Shimano V Brake, LX
Bar end shifters: One Campy (indexed for front derailleur, three
detents), One Sun Tour (friction shift)
 Rear Derailleur: Sun Tour XCD
Generic Seven Speed rear freewheel assembly
 Blackburn rear rack
Fenders: Mt Zedal, cut to fit
Lighting system: Shimano Nexus with Basta front and rear lights, plus
 wiring

Note: Bike is for sale without saddle. Disregard saddle in photos.

Lighting system currently is inoperative; the Basta front light may
merely need a new bulb, or the problem may lie elsewhere. (Débrouillez-
 vous!)

The frame has the usual amount of patina (Jan Heine) or
beausage (GP) that one would expect for a bike of this age. I've
just noted, upon taking the photos, that there is a long scratch with
some rust on the bottom of the top tube--I would have touched this up
years ago if I had seen it. This appears to be purely surface rust,
 however.

Price: $1200, plus shipping and boxing (to be done at a bike shop),
 from State College PA, 16801.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Ok, so my trials and tribulations with nitto racks continue.

FS is one brand new rear nitto campee rack that doesn't like my
 caliper brakes.  It's this one:

2 Ostrich rear panniers, lightly used, purchased these from Curtis
