[RBW] Re: Your bike ride better with upright bars than drops?

2016-10-06 Thread Beth H

I flirted with drops again and again, partly because I worked in the
industry and the cool kids were all commuting on drops and partly because I
dabbled briefly in road time trialing and rando riding. I tried every sort
of drop bar over a period of aboout fifteen years: Randonneur (which
splayed my wrists outward at a weird angle), standard road (not bad),
Moustache (the absolute worst for my hands and wrists, which never adjusted
to any place to grip the bar) and finally the Noodles (the most successful
drop bar experience for me and the one I stuck with the longest, about ten
years) Two years ago, I realized that my one dedicated drop bar bike was
not getting ridden anymore. If I converted it then I'd have three upright
bikes, one more than I really needed since I'd stopped racing, and so I
sold the drop bar bike to an earnest young Reedie who was thrilled with it.
I'm down to two bikes, with two different kinds of upright nars, and while
I'm no longer a wannabe mega-miler all my rides are much happier and more
comfortable.

Cockpit for my Bridgestone, aka my "pickup truck" (bigger front basket,
Carradice Camper LF). I have no idea who made this handlebar -- I found it
in a $5 box at North Portland Bikeworks -- but it's about the
widest-stanced upright bar I've ever fitted on one of my bikes and boy, is
it comfortable when I'm carrying those big grocery loads. I measured iot
and it came to something like 65cm straight across from end to end.

North Road bars courtesy of QBP about ten years ago when I still worked at
a shop. Very similar to the old Albatross and in this smaller width with a
little bit of angle, perfect for my wrists.

At this point, I've squeezed everything I can from the experience of riding
with drops, learned all I need to know, and won't go back.

[RBW] Re: If you were going to design a poor man's faux Riv "just ride" bicycle ....

2016-08-12 Thread Beth H
http://bikelovejones1.blogspot.com/2015/11/fixation-short-history-of-bicycle.html

A short history of my most preferred bike setup.
The bikes, in order of photos shown in the post:

1. 1985-6 Peugeot Orient Xpress. It was too big for me at 21 inches c-t, but I
loved it. Nearly ten years after selling it to finance a smaller frame, I STILL
miss it.

2. 1999 Rivendell All-Rounder. This fits me, and rides like a dream. And I ride
it very, very slowly. Because these days I'm no longer a fast rider. But that's
okay.

3. Diamondback Apex, department-store era (late 90s? early 00s?).

4. 1989 Bridgestone MB-4. I got this in trade for a Thomson seatpost. Yeah, a
whole bike.

Now that I ride mostly slow and short, I feel little need to keep more than two
bikes at home. Especially when i've dialed in the concept so completely.

[RBW] UNracer Ride, Portland, June 29

2016-05-12 Thread Beth H
Dear Riv lovers and iBOBs:

Pedalpalooza returns to Portland June 8-July 3!

As part of the Pedalpalooza calendar of bike events, the UNracer ride (formerly
known as the Riv ride, the Grant P. ride and by other names) will take place
Wednesday, June 29.
Meet at 6:30 pm at Peninsula Park (Ainsworth Street side), celebrate and admire
each other's lugged, steel steeds, and then enjoy a mellow ride to somewhere
for food and drink (TBD, but probably one of Portland's delicious brewpubs).
Wear comfy, ordinary clothes and shoes and bring some money to buy refreshments
afterwards.
No fee, no prizes (feel free to buy an UNracer patch on your own if you like),
just fun on bikes.

For more information, check out the Pedalpalooza calendar:

For those who can't spring for a basket bag from RBW,

The downer is that they're not waterproof so probably better for Phoenix
than for Seattle. Still they fit baskets nicely.

I remain a huge fan of shoes from Chrome, particularly the Kursk and the
Dresden (the latter is no longer made but you can find it sometimes online

The sole is stiff enough to provide support and the insole is among the

If you have very wide feet, they may not fit; but for my skinny yardstick
feet they're just about perfect.

Re: [RBW] Re: Compass Knickers

2015-10-14 Thread Beth H
Since I sew by hand, I won't be doing anything terrifically fancy.
These are dress slack I got too big for; so some of the leftover will be
used to expand the waistline up a size (see photo for how I recently did
this with a pair of Swrve pants:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/bethness/21799276151/)

I will likely just hem them, gather in an inch or two on each leg and add a
1" wide strip with buttons and buttonholes (and yes, I know how to make
buttonholes by hand as well -- thanks Mom!).

Once I cut down the legs I'll have plenty of material left to make them
into plus-two-and-a-halfs or so.

[RBW] Re: The Impossible School Commute

2015-09-09 Thread Beth H
Leah is totally The Cool Mom.

When I was a kid, I wanted to ride to and from school to avoid the bullies
in the back of the school bus. My mother invited me to select a safe route,
draw a map (school was three miles from home) and then, early one Sunday
morning she would follow behind me in the family car to make sure I was
okay. It all worked out beautifully. Sadly, my mother never learned to ride
a bike; but she supported my love for bicycles completely.

I hope you get some takers on dinner and conversation; what a great way to
build community!

by the back door so you can wipe it down at the end of a very wet weather
ride. And for anyone still on the fence about the Chev, here's a photo I
took of one at Rivelo, the new Riv-esque shop in SE Portland.

[RBW] Re: Wee Rides are Awesome Rides!

2015-07-05 Thread Beth H
It's true. No ride is too small.

I used to avoid too-short rides. The cyclometer on my fork would stare at
me, gently mocking me if my rides lasted less than five miles.
Then, I decided it was time to tear down my All-Rounder for a long-overdue
overhaul. To serve me in the meantime, I rebuilt my Bridgestone MB-4 as a
city bike, with upright bars, racks and fenders. And no cyclometer. I
decided to try NOT thinking about distance.

That was over a week ago. And after the first couple of rides, I stopped
caring about distance. And two things happened:

1. I spent more time riding (albeit at a slightly slower pace).
2. I enjoyed my rides more.

I'll be tossing up a bunch of Huret cyclometers on eBay soon. But first,
another ride before it gets too hot out there.
Happy riding!

[RBW] Re: Altus rear derailer = upgrade from DeerHead

2015-07-04 Thread Beth H
I have loved the Altus derailleur forever. An older version is on my

type. So, I set the limit screw on my Shimano Deer Head rear derailer to
 make my bike a 3x4.

Then David Banzer was selling some nice freewheels, and I picked up a
13-34 Suntour Winner Pro 5sp freewheel from him.

Put on the freewheel and the Deerhead wouldn't take the 34. Not even
close. So, I put on an Altus from Riv. Not only did the Altus take the 34
like a champ, but it shifts WAY better than the Deerhead ever did. The
Deerhead derailer is definitely old, but it's not loose, floppy, bent. I
attribute the difference to the unambiguous design flaw that the Deerhead
does not have a slant parallelogram, but the Altus does. The Deerhead has
 a drop parallelogram.

Anyway, besides the fact that the Altus is humorously heavy, and besides
the fact that the pulley bushings come bone dry (I lubed them), it is a
really great and really cheap rear derailer. Anybody running friction
shifting should give it a chance. I have no comment on running it indexed.
There is something to be said about letting Shimano take a design to
absolute full maturity and then let it trickle down to the very cheapest
 model. The Altus is that.

P.S. Let me know if you are nostalgic and want my deerhead rear der. I'm
keeping the deerhead front, for a couple reasons.

[RBW] Re: Random thoughts on comfort, speed, and wool in hot weather

2015-05-28 Thread Beth H
I have two t-shirts sold by Chrome a few years ago, made of a Bamboo blend
that acts as a cooling agent on hot days and acts as a nice warming first
layer on colder days. I wish I could've bought more of these as they are
about the nicest T-shirt ever, even classy enough for work; but Chrome
stopped offering them after just one year.

Meanwhile, I am officially selling off the rest of my lycra padded
everything. I haven't worn most of it in a few years and it's just sitting
around. These days it's cargo shorts, shorty wool ankle socks and either a
cotton t-shirt or a longsleeved cotton button-down shirt, and sneakers on
flat pedals.
I don't go fast -- or terribly far -- anymore, so why dress like I do?

My only concessions to cycling garb are Andiamos (for longer rides), a
brimmed cycling cap under my helmet and padded gloves to protect my hands.
Everything else I can find at Goodwill. It's all good.

[RBW] Re: thoughts on wheels.....

2015-03-16 Thread Beth H
Soory. My post, my bad. Shoulda been clearer.

What I would add is that, since entry-level and older freewheel hubs have
more exposed axle on the drive side, the wheel is more prone to flexing in
the dropouts under stresses -- and a big rider who pedals out of the saddle
a lot is certainly strong enough to put that kind of stress on a rear hub.
Cassettes have a freehub built up around the axle, offering it a bit more
support under load. That said, I agree with everyone here who says that
handbuilt wheels can be considered an investment -- though those on a very
tight budget would still see them as an unattainable luxury. It's a tough,
one to be sure.

[RBW] Re: Solvent tank for drivetrain cleaning

2015-03-02 Thread Beth H

I went digging to find out the status of El Duke degreaser. Since Rivendell
sells it, I contacted them. Here's what Spencer told me:

Hi Beth-
The El Duke guy quit making the stuff for a year or so a couple years ago.
Then he moved to WC and we convinced him to start making it again.
I think Riv is the one and only place to get it since he does not have the
time to distribute it all by himself (the El Duke project is a side job).

So there you have it. It's now a smaller side project, and available ONLY
through RBW in 12 oz. bottles.

Still worth it, if you ask me.

[RBW] Re: Solvent tank for drivetrain cleaning

2015-03-01 Thread Beth H
Jim -- I use El Duke degreaser (available in 12 oz. bottles at Rivendell:
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/gooduke.htm) in one of those pink tubs
that hospitals used to send patients home with. It's big enough to hold a
crankset and everything else. I have on hand an assortment of brushes
ranging from Park tool skinny brush to big fat solvent tank style (fr
Harbor Freight) to a few old toothbrushes, enough to reach all the nooks
and crannies in drive-train parts. Since El Duke is plant-based, I don't
worry about toxins and don't even bother wearing gloves half the time. I
drop the parts in, let them soak for about twenty minutes, and then scrub
away. Carthartic and cleansing.
When I'm done, I remove the parts rinse with hot water, and hang them up to
dry. I let the liquid in the tub settle, and then I carefully pour off the
top into a jar; it's usually good for at least one more use (two if it's
not too gunky and I pour carefully).
Since discovering El Duke, I no longer use synthetic solvents.

If I can really get it together -- AND the winter here stays balmy enough
for my tools not to hurt when I pick them up in an uninsulated workspace!
-- then the most ambitious thing I've got planned is to tear down and fully
overhaul my '99 All-Rounder, which hasn't had bearings re-done since
something like 2007. To be fair, wheels and BB are sealed bearings, so it
would just be a matter of installing fresh bearings in the hubs and
checking my basic Shimano BB to see if it needs replacing (which it
probably does, as I average 2,500-2,700 miles a year on this thing). The
Ultegra headset that came with this frame (used) still rolls nicely and
feels good, but I'll probably open it up anyway to clean it and put in some
fresh grease.
It's nice to have a basically trouble-free and reliable bicycle to ride
every day, ya know?

[RBW] Re: Daring to wrench on my Riv's?

2014-12-05 Thread Beth H
Wiping down your bike with a rag and looking closely at the parts will tell
you a lot about how your bike is built and works.
Begin with the headset, since it's already all there and it's unlikely you
will need to replace everything right away (probabl just needs cleaning,
fresh grease and reassembly).
Glenn's manual, mentioned earlier in the comments, will get you pretty far
with basic things that run on loose ball bearings.
For sealed stuff, consult on of the later editions of the Bicycling
magazine repair guides.
If your city has a non-profit or DIY communal workspace, inquire about
classes or one-on-one help. DIY spaces are usually cheap, friendly and fun
places to hang out with others who love bicycles.
Enjoy the process!

[RBW] Re: Winter means looking for problems that might not exist and solving them. Hence, Stem Shifters!

2014-11-24 Thread Beth H
It may not really be a problem for taller guys, but for someone like me,
stem shifters are a godsend. Short waist, long limbs and reach issues meant
i had to come up with a wacky solution to make a drop-barr'd bike fit
comfortably. Here's what I came up with:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/bethness/sets/72157631882809483/

The photo set shows the story of the bike from craigslist purchase through
rebuild to present configuration.

I LOVE my stem shifters (Suntour Power Ratchet). I especially love that
most folks haven't re-discovered them yet, so I can still find them for
five bucks in the used parts bin at my local bike recycler. Good stuff.

Re: [RBW] Cyclocross and a little contest

2014-11-15 Thread Beth H
I, for one, am grateful for my local cyclocross scene and its close cousin,
short-track mountain biking.
As a child, I rode my department store fake BMX bike through unifinished
construction sites, making up my own obstacle courses and trying to clean every
feature I could find. (At the tender age of ten, I didn't know what trials
riding was but probably would have enjoyed it.)
As a forty-something adult who rode every day for transportation but was
definitely out of shape by modern cycling standards, I entered my fitst
short-track race on a dare from friends. Since then I raced four full seasons
of 'cross and four-plus of short-track. After a 2+ year hiatus caused in great
part by a career change, I came back to race (euphenistically speaking,
anyway) an unsanctioned demo event. Two weeks of riding my old mountain bike
in preparation, practicing dismounts (I still suck at mounts) and bunny
hopping; at nearly 52 I am still dreadfully out of shape and don't care. I'm
having a blast.

I owe a great deal of this to my local scene for being as friendly and
non-judgmental as any bunch of folks could possibly be. I come in last,
red-faced and out-of-breath, and get cheered as loadly as the woman who crossed
the line first. Definitely an un-racer in most of my bicycling life, but there
will always be a place in my heart for my local 'cross scene.

Re: [RBW] Surly after Riv

2014-10-23 Thread Beth H
Andy and others who bemoan the selling out of the Rivendell ideal -- have
you ever owned a bike shop and been responsible for the care and feeding of
your workers? Just curious. I used to co-own a shop, and had to make
payroll twice a month. In the end high ideals won't put food on your
employees' tables or clothes on their backs. Say what you like about Surly
and the companies that wish they were more like Surly, but their bikes are
far more affordable and they sell, logo font and quasi-sexist vibe be
damned. And when fly out the door and customers are happy, your workers
won't starve. Making payroll because your shop is selling and servicing
decent bikes and making people happy is a lot better than the alternative.

For awhile, I bemoaned how other companies had begun to copy Rivendell's
ideas -- steel bikes with comfortable, non-racing geometry, wool tops, et
al. Getting bicyclists with less disposable income on board by making
cheaper copies of the cool stuff simply encourages them to ape the rich,
right?
Sure. Fine. Whatever. In the end, all the copying/flattery has gotten a
crap ton more people outside and on bicycles -- enough more that I don't
really care anymore how they got there.

Riv started something really beautiful, and it comes as no surprise that
other companies have taken up the mantle and are spreading good, sensible
ideas. So what if my wool jersey says Surly (or Pearl Izumi or
Novara) on it? Better yet, so what if I scored my last lot of wool tops
from Goodwill? and they fit a little loose or lumpy? It's all good. Hey,
I'm outside riding my bike in nearly all kinds of weather. I'm happy.

I doubt I will ever be in a position to ever buy another Rivendell bicycle.
That's cool. I know what makes a bike sensible and comfortable and I can
replicate an awful lot of both the geometry and aesthetic on almost any
cheaper steel bike available to me.
So in the end, honestly, I think Rivendell has won.

Cheers and happy riding --

[RBW] Splats question

2014-10-21 Thread Beth H
I boug a pair of Splats when they first came out almost three years ago. I wear
shoes without a raised heel -- usually Chrome Kursks because they-so
comfortable.
I have noticed that, even though I'm careful to remove the splats at my
destination, I still am wearing out the strap that goes underneath my foot.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a good fix that will keep me from
having to buy another pair right away? I don't own an industrial sewing machine
so lower-ech solutions are sought. I LOVE these and want to keep them going
before buying replacements.

[RBW] Re: Platform/Spiked pedals question (gripsters, grip kings, etc.)

2014-10-02 Thread Beth H
Depending on the pedal you choose and the shoe you wear when riding, there
will be anywhere from no to a little locking.

I find the best combination for me to give me a non-slip surface and avoid
locking is to wear a converse-style shoe (I'm a huge fan of the Chrome
Kursk) and use a wide, flat BMX pedal. One that takes screw-in pins offers
more grip than one without. VP and Wellgo offer good models.

[RBW] Re: Rain Gear?

2012-09-15 Thread Beth H
What kind of rain gear depends greatly on where you live and how much you
ride.

I'm a daily rider in Portland, OR and I ride all winter long.

I have been somewhat disappointed by Showers Pass, especially since they
moved their manufacturing from Vietnam to China a few years ago. Quality
control became inconsistent and the warranty policies became more
unbending. I understand that a lot of their entry-level-priced items have
undergone a redesign for 2013 but have not yet seen the new versions.

I am hanging onto my Burley Rock Point jacket for dear life. It's a better
design than the SP touring jacket (which was basically a copy of the
Burley) and the fabric and waterproofing have held upfor far longer.
My friend's SP Touring jacket had issues six months in; by eight months in
the waterproof zipper had frayed to failure and the seams were quite leaky.
When he called SP to resolve the issues they said the jacket had to be
washed every 4 to 6 weeks with a special soultion from NikWax -- something
the hang tag hadn't made clear. They were willing to take the jacket in for
inspection but could guarantee that they'd actually offer replacement,
leaving my friend without a rain jacket in the meantime. In the end, my
friend bought a J G Breathable rain jacket online -- heavy-duty,
comfortable and water-proof enough for daily riding in PDX. Also a bargain
at $100 plus s+h. (J G admits they purposely underprice this product to
remain competitive, and they only sell it direct online.) He's had it for
two years and it's still going strong.

For rainpants: On light-rain days where I'm jus dashing short spurts around
town, I like Rainlegs. Easy on-off and very stowable, and plenty
warterproof in light rain. For heavy rain, the water will drip down around
the backside of the legs and get your pants wet. In that case, I switch to
either my old Burley rain pants OR to my heavier-duty J G Cyclewear
Breathable rain pant. The former is okay for short commutes but so old that
it eventually fails in a downpour. When I know it's going to rain
bucketfuls I use the latter -- a little hot but plenty durable.

For foot coverage I'm fond of the RBW Splats for most city riding. They fit
over most street shoes and are stowable; though the heavy waxed cotton
takes more time to dry out between uses. SP shoe covers do seem to work
pretty well, but you MUST take them off at your destination; if you walk
around in them they will wear out much more quickly.

I don't use a helmet cover, preferring to wear a thin cycling cap under my
helmet (cotton in summer, thin wool in fall/winter).

Ultimately, I think it's ideal to have rain wear that is SO good that you
mostly *enjoy* riding in the rain. Even by February.

[RBW] Re: Pedals

2012-09-13 Thread Beth H
I still ride with clips and straps on my daily commuter, but the straps are
set fairly wide open to facilitate ease of use and to accommodate my
toe-clip covers:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethness/3626514094/in/set-72157630921829368

Underneath is this kind of older Shimano BMX platform:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethness/3898876240/sizes/l/in/set-72157594450837124/

If anyone finds these pedals, grab 'em! They are by far one of the most
comfortable pedals for pedaling free, but have the added benefit of being
able to take a toeclip (with some modification, suggest you use chrome
metal clips for bendability).

My Surly Big Dummy now uses some Redline BMX platforms with pins. Also
pretty comfortable, and the pins do help with gription in our rainy winters.

Shoe of choice: Chrome Kursk (non-PSD version). Several cuts above the
Converse sneaker on which it's loosely based, this is one stylish, classy
sneaker that rides beautifully. I rode for years in Vans until I tried a
pair of these. Perfect for medium-to-skinny feet; stiffer sole than most
sneakers but not uncomfortable for walking all day; removable insole is one
of the thickets and most supportive ever. I like these so much that I
followed my mother's longstanding rule of buying several pairs in multiple
colors (if it's a good shoe and it fits you well, buy it in every color
before they stop making it.)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethness/6648962053/in/set-72157628750604647/

At $75 a pair they're not cheap; but they can be found on sale at the
Chrome web site (check their backdoor for closeouts and overruns) and
also on eBay. I have four pairs and didn't pay full price for any of them.
The monochrome [all-black] version is classiest of all -- nice enough, when
new at least, to wear in some professional settings. (I teach in mine.)

My shop does this with Surly Big Dummy frames. We build them up with a

While I applaud RBW's stance on avoiding stuff made in China, I predict

few chipsall over -- so I don't care about paint issues.

If not, then I'll punt; but I thought I'd toss this out to the list first.

[RBW] Re: frame swap? (My LongLow custom for your Atlantis)

2012-06-23 Thread Beth H
So here's the blog post that describes everything:

http://bikelovejones1.blogspot.com/2012/06/want-to-trade-my-55cm-riv-longlow-for.html

From this post you can link to a set of photos of the bike in various
stages of setup. Current setup has drops and stem shifters.

I would really prefer to swap this bike for an Atlantis in my correct size.
If that's not possible then I will consider selling it as a whole bike.
Share this with your friends as I do not belong to every cool bike forum in
the universe.

Re: [RBW] frame swap? (My LongLow custom for your Atlantis)

2012-06-22 Thread Beth H
On Friday, June 22, 2012 9:39:56 AM UTC-7, Patrick Moore wrote:

Beth: I thought you loved the LongLow. What changed?
And, second, what about 700c wheels now disappoints you?

Two things that have developed over the last five years:

1. I find that bikes spec'd around 700c wheels in my appropriate
height-size are now uncomfortably long for my shortening reach -- and I was
already pretty darned short-wasted to begin with. Aging has slowly
decreased my reach further, to the point where drops are uncomfortable and
uprights on a short-top tube model are not working (combination of
handlebar, stem length and frame geometry make for a bike that does not
handle optimally).

2. My LongLow was made in 1999, befre any of us knew just how alrge a tire
we'd eventually like to run. This frame can handle 32mm tires with fenders
only BARELY, and then only with the right tire and fender combo.

3. The older I get, the happier I find I am on bigger tires. Older-school
mountain bike geometry is giving me a new lease on bicycling with a better
upright position (stem/bar/frame geometry combo) and plenty of room for big
tires and full fenders. Plus, I LIKE the feel of the ride on 26 (559)
wheels and I love the feeling that I can ride anywhere on them.

So, as my bicycling life evolves and my atorage options aren't increasing,
it makes sense for me to transition to bikes I will actually ride, and will
enjoy riding as I age. I am ready to look at a frame swap if someone out
there has an Atlantis they'd like to trade for my LongLow frame.

Thanks to everyone who has emailed back and forth with me trying to
convince me to keep the LongLow. I live in a tiny place with very limited
storage space, so it doesn't make sense to keep and store bikes I ride less
and less over time. Periodic culling and adjusting of the bike herd isn't a
bad thing. Cheers and happy riding --Beth

A shorter O option might be either:

a. Take MAX to end of the line in Hillsboro and ride out to Stub Stewart; OR

b. Ride out to Oxbow and back (breakfast at M M in Gresham the next

Dates might be tough on this since everyone is busy.
And I'm with Lynne on this -- just require that people arrive clothed and

[RBW] Re: Rationalizing a Reduction; Encourage Me

2012-05-06 Thread Beth H
It's both a nice and slightly embarassing quandry to have: 9 bikes,
one butt.

I recently sold off my singlespeed (Redling MonoCog) after determining
that, much as I've anjoyed it, my knees can no longer handle
singlespeed mountain biking. That leaves the All-Rounder, the LongLow
and the Surly Big Dummy as my remaining bikes that are ready to ride.

Between the three of them, my bikes don't so it all, but as a rider,
neither do I anymore.
I think the hardest part was admitting to myself that I had changed
enough as a rider to justify selling off the dross.

I'm curious to hear from oldsters (ie, older than young-uns like

I've had recurring knee twinges for years, since a high school track
injury ended my running days and sent me onto the bike.
I've noticed it a lot more in the last few years -- basically since I
began racing singlespeed -- that my knees, espcially my right knee,
will twinge more often. I noticed it last year when I experimented
with working out/training to race. While I did lose weight working
out in a gym, and my muscles got stronger, my joints did not. By the
end of short-track season I was ready for the several weeks away from
the singlespeed bike before cyclocross. By mid-November, the
combination of singlespeed racing, thick mud and dropping temperatures
forced me to skip the last four local races of the season because my
knees couldn't handle it.

A cut in hours at work meant the end of the gym membership this winter/
spring. When I pulled out the singlespeed bike to just ride around the
neighborhood, I slapped on a bigger cog in the rear and it still
didn't help. I've ridden the SS bike three times since New Year's, and
I will most likely sell it this spring.

I can't afford knee replacement surgery, so instead I'm listening to
my body and taking preventative steps to insure I'll have these knees
for as long as I can. If that means hanging up racing (and
specifically singlespeed racing/riding), so be it. I had a good run
and I'm ready to Get Mellow.

On my last bike campout, I used a very small child's tent --
originally from Walmart but I got mine for four dollars at a yard

Four poles, built-in vinyl floor and tiny permanent ranfly up top.
The whole thing screams cheap; I had to seam-seal everything myself.
But you know what? When rolled up and stuffed in its sack it takes up
remarkably little space; and at no-longer-exactly-5' 7 I fit inside
fully stretched out diagonally, with my stuff on either side of me in
the corners. It's the perfect little tent for solo bike-camping.

[RBW] Re: Contemplating herd thinning to all-26

2012-04-07 Thread Beth H
Fellas -- thanks for the feedback. I should've included a few more
tidbits:

a. Space is much more of a consideration than money, though money may
become a consideration in the next year as my career situation
evolves.

b. I generally live car-free, though I will sometimes ride as a
passenger in my partner's automobile and actually help spell her on
long drives (i.e., outta state, which happenes once or twice a year).
In the city I don't drive a car. Ever.

c. In the last dozen years, I've gone from being a transportational
cyclist to being a tourist, a randonneuse and a racer, and now I feel
myself heading back into utilitarian cycling again and loving it. The
thought of training holds little appeal; The idea of signing up for
a ride to beat the clock holds even less; and paying to ride or race
my bike makes less and less sense as I evolve as a cyclist. The things
I continue to relish are my commutes, my cargo-hauling errands, and my
leisurely weekend jaunts, all done by bicycle.

d. How many bikes I own -- and all the seemingly-requisite gear that
goes with them -- feels far less important to me now. (No matter how
many bikes I own, I still have only one butt.)

As space and money are increasingly important considerations, it
becomes clearer to me that a serious winnowing-down is probably in
order. And because I rely on bikes for transportation, it makes such
excellent sense for me to have a smaller stable which all utilize the
same wheel size. Fewer bikes, fewer spare parts, more space.

So yeah, I will probably think about selling the two bikes I ride the
least, sometime in the next year or less. Thanks again for the
feedback. --Beth

I'm 5' 7, 32 inseam, long-limbed and relatively short-waisted. Over
the last few years I've found that my 700c-wheeled Longlow has been
sitting unused more and more, while my bikes with smaller frames, more
standover room and 26 wheels get ridden All. The. Time. Is it about
size? Or just comfort? Even my singlespeed mountain bike, which I've
raced on for the last few years, has 26 wheels. And it's small, but
not unneccessarily so.

Like Gorgena Terry in the recent BQ article, I like my almost
unlimited tire choices in 26. I appreciate the clearance for fenders
(all my 26 frames are more mountain-y than road-y. And I've never had
toe overlap issues on these bikes.
None of the frames is too small, just noticable smaller than my
Longlow. I'm especially fond of the '99 All-Rounder that gets ridden
nearly every day as my dependable commuter. Possibly the best bike
ever. And while it may look too small, it sure doesn't feel that
way.

When Sweetie and I visited Riv HQ during a Bay Area swing a couple of

the corner that lasted nearly two hours.
When we returned Grant to his environment obviously more relaxed, he
settled down on his giant feldenkreis ball-cum-office chair, and got

Is there a problem? I asked, sotto voce.
No, no, no problem, Jay assured me, it's just that Grant eats lunch
at his desk a lot. He takes really short breaks. Works a lot. He
paused, snuck a glance at Grant and whispered to me, Now and then he
forgets to eat altogether. It's really busy around here in the summer,

[RBW] Re: Anyone Regret Selling a Bike?

2011-12-31 Thread Beth H
The main I posted this is wondering if anyone in the group regretted
 selling a bike.

Yes. I had a Peugeot Orient Express mountain bike frame that I had
built up into a really tough commuter about ten years ago:

http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2005/cc039-bethhamon1005.html

It was a beautiful old atb frame, with thick, almost medieval lugs and
a fork crown so big and beefy it made me weep. It was almost too big
for me (21 c-t) but somehow I made it work, and I rode it everywhere,
even taking it on some weekend tours.
When I needed to thin the herd (due to space considerations -- another
bike was coming to the bike ranch), I reluctantly sold the frameset to
the shop where I work. It sold to someone else immediately -- I didn't
know to whom since it sold on my day off -- and I didn't see it again
for a long time. Then, last year, while my bike was hanging vertically
on a hook at the end of the MAX [light-rail] car, I looked across the
aisle and saw my Peugeot hanging on the other hook! It had been
rebuilt with some modifications, including a shorter stem, skinnier
tires and narrower handlebars, but was being ridden by a [taller]
woman who looked like it made her perfectly happy. She got off two
stops before me, hopped on and rode away with ease. And while I was
sad at having to sell the frame, I was glad it was being ridden.

I've since replaced the Peugeot with a Riv All-Rounder frame, which is
smaller, fits me much better, and has an eerily similar build-up:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethness/4983518560/

(If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?)

[RBW] Re: I like the look of these

2011-11-22 Thread Beth H
This is the first product I've seen that has potential for our rainy
Pac NW Climate.
Though temps here can drop as low as in Vermont during the winter,
they don't stay there.
Most gloves meant for winter use are too clammy for Portland use. OR
makes an overmitt that can be used alone or with a heavier glove
underneath, but the long wrist coverage makes it hard to use with a
rain jacket for just everyday riding.
This is the closest I've seen to something that might work. I think
the thumb coverage still needs a little work; my thumbs get cold when
left un/underprotected. But that's a minor quibble.
Wish I'd seen these before I placed my Riv order last week.

[RBW] Re: Winter Cycling Wear!

2011-11-08 Thread Beth H
For commutes to/from work, I usually just wear my work clothes (jeans/
shirt/sweatshirt or sweater, regular shoes). If it's dry I'll top it
off with a heavy wool sweater, scarf and wool cap under my helmet.

For light rain I'll choose a lighter weight shirt and sweater and
layer it under a Burley rain jacket and Rainlegs.
For heavier rain I'll sawp in full Burley rain pants and shoe covers
(this year I've been useing RBW Splats and they work well).

If it's really cold I'll add a woo ear band to the cap, or swap in a
heavier wool cap with ear flap. If it's really, really cold I'll add
thin wool tights under my pants, though I always have to take them off
at work because it's too warm.

Gloves are most often ragg wool variety, even in the rain. I usually
carry extra socks and gloves with me so I have a dry pair for the ride
home.

[RBW] Bike registration (Was: Riv,Miyata, and Pelican stolen in SF)

2011-09-06 Thread Beth H
I think the effectiveness of bicycle registration depends greatly on
where you live and the level of enforcement and follow-up your local
police are committed to. In Portland, I tend to lock up my bike with
both a U-lock and cables and advise everyone else to do the same,
because the police are simply too understaffed to deal with it very
well. The nicer the bike, the heavier the lock. No lock is as
expensive as a new bicycle. (Especially a Rivvy or similarly nice
bike.)

The double-edged sword of bicycle registration is, of course, that
someday folks may clamor for bicycle rider registration and licensure.
Licensure of riders will probably lead to a requirement for bike rider
insurance; and, well, there goes the neighborhood. It's too slippery a
slope for my taste. So I'd rather lay low, slip under the radar, take
personal responsibility for my bike and go sort of overboard on
protection.

[RBW] Re: The bike collection (or hoard?)

2011-06-19 Thread Beth H
Four:

'99 Longlow (original owner, I suspect this will be around until I
can't swing my leg over a top tube anymore. Now the weekend/long ride
unit)
'99 All-Rounder (second owner; this one fell out of the sky from an
abundant universe. My mostly-daily transpo)
2009 Redline Monocog singlespeed two-sixer (aka Stompy; my racing bike
for short-track and 'cross -- when I'm done racing I'll let this one
go)
2009 Surly BD (the farmers' market go-getter, musical instrument
chauffeur and recycling hauler and just about the most bang-for-buck
ever in a cargo bike)

(Spousal bike: Sweetie rides a '94 B'Stone XO-5 that she's quite fond
of. That makes five total.)

No room for more here at the postage-stamp-sized house that is Rancho

three. I'm feeling the beginning of the end of my hardcore bike-lust/
acquisition days and there is definitely a sense of settling into
contentment with what I have bike-wise; it's been coming on for over a
year now and shows no signs of abating. Mostly these days I am just
into Riding. It's a good time.
Happy riding --Beth

[RBW] Re: Is XT THAT much better than Deore?

2011-06-17 Thread Beth H
Seriously, it depends on whether you're running index or friction.
If friction, it does. not. matter.
My front derailleur on my All-Rounder is an old Shimano Alivio that I
rescued from the metal recycling bin. A co-worker had tossed it for
being a little rusty. I scraped off the rust, cleaned and lubed it,
and voila! It works fine.

Let's say you're running index. Then it depends on whether you're
racing or commuting/touring.
If the former, you've got to run whatever gives the fastest, crispest
shifting. If you're serious about racing you'll pay for the best
shifting, or your sponsor will. (These days, according to my most
serious racing buddies, that seems to be Sram Red.)
If the latter, the shifting has to be reliable and durable, but not
necessarily lightning-fast. If I had to choose between Deore and XT in
this case, I'd go for the Deore simply because it's cheaper and gives
solid performance. Incidentally, there's a Deore rear derailleur on my
All-Rounder as I type this. And true to me cheap-a$$ fashion, I got it
used.

Run what works. Happy riding!

[RBW] Re: Considering new pedals

2011-06-06 Thread Beth H
FYI: Tonight is my first short-track mountain bike race. I am racing a
singlespeed bike.
Pedal of choice is a Crank Bros. 5050XX (sealed bearings), every hole
loaded with a traction pin.
(That's ten pins per side.)
No shin guards. (They're cumbersome, and any core sample I might take
from my shin is pretty tiny.)
(In a concession to the terrain I DO wear some PI X-Alp Seek mountain
bike shoes, with the cleat holes covered. The stiffer sole seems to
help.)
When I line up with the other women they all stare at my pedals in
fear; someone always tries not to line up right next to me.
I have been scolded on two occasions for not using clipless pedals,
each time the racer insisting that my pedals posed a safety problem
for HER.
(And each time I've told the racer not to worry, as she would
eventually wind up lapping me on the course anyway.)

Just another resounding vote for flat pedals.

I tried the MKS Touring pedal and found that the two thin sides caused
little hot-spots of their own, even with thicker-soled BMX sneakers.
After riding my upright city bike for ages with GR-9's and toeclips, I
swapped in some MKS RMX pedals this week (my dainty size 9 ladies
feet don't require Grip Kings), and I like them a lot. The only hard
part is that I find them a little slippery on very rainy days. I may
ultimately swap in some BMX platform pedals -- they're not as pretty
but they do offer more traction.

Since switching from my Longlow to my All-Rounder as my daily city

[RBW] Re: New (to me anyway) and quite flat platform pedals ...

2011-02-09 Thread Beth H
That's a lot of money for reduced slippage.
Of course, if you're looking for a dwnhill pedal these may be the
ticket. Otherwise, really, just about anything flat will work fine.
I race on Crank Bros. 5050XX (sealed bearing version, replaceable pins
and plates) without shin guards and have yet to take a significant
core sample of my leg. The pedal is just a big, wide, happy platform
for my foot.
For anything else, any ordinary BMX-type flat pedal will work fine for
all but the biggest feet, and costs far less. I like the MKS platform
pedals that Riv sells, but I'm also a fan of the Redline BMX pedal
with replaceable pins and sealed bearings. Both cost less than $50 a
pair retail, and losse-bearing versions of the Redline pedal cost
around half of that.
