Re: [RBW] WTB: Analog Cycles Fifth Season Squall Sack

2022-04-17 Thread Christopher Wiggins
Hello!
When ordering Squall Sacks (or any Fifth Season bag) I’m limited to the
fabric that the maker has on hand. Most of the colors were not available
at the time of ordering, and there was no eta on when they would be back in
stock. I took the best options that were available to me at that time.
I am enjoying Naples, but I understand. I wouldn’t want to move back to my
home town either.
Thanks!

[RBW] Ride Ready Apparel

2019-06-27 Thread Christopher Wiggins
Like a lot of us, I like to wear "normal" clothing when riding. What I
found was that, after a summer of riding, one of my $45 shirts wasn't good
for much more than riding.

I've started gathering (do the kids say "curate"?) gently used clothing
that I would be happy to ride in. Sweat, blood or errant bon fire embers
shouldn't break the bank. I call it Ride Ready Apparel.

Have a look if you like.

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Taking Clem to a different level

2018-10-24 Thread Christopher Wiggins
Hello Jim
the grips are Velo Orange Rustines. I don't even know if they still do
them. I never found them good on Albas etc (loose fitting/too short), but
they fit fine on the drops. In this case there is no tape underneath. I
could have probably made that work, but just decided to take the short cut
and start the tape where the grip ends. The added benefit was that the
grips are flexy enough that I could run the shift housing under the grip on
the right side.

Thanks

Chris

[RBW] Re: Cheviot and Bike Rack

2018-06-25 Thread Christopher Wiggins
I'm risking being redundant here, because it seems you've gotten some good
advice.

If it's possible to have a receiver installed, you will find
loading/unloading much easier. I've used several different types of hitch
racks over the years, and IMO the best rack currently for bikes with
racks/fenders/baskets/bags is the Thule Double Track Pro. I can carry my
Cheviot and the wifes Rosco Mixte with ease.

Good luck.

[RBW] Re: A Homer Hilsen vs LHT - Will I notice a difference?

2017-12-29 Thread Christopher Wiggins
Drew,

I've owned, and ridden both bikes for the better part of 10 years. Will
you notice a difference? Hard to say. I can only give you my thoughts
based on my experience of 30 years of riding and selling bikes. First-
both bikes are great. The LHT gets a bad rap for being "heavy". I've
never been bothered by this. I don't think the bike "rides heavy" at all.
Is the AHH lighter? Certainly. With my communing load the AHH is nearly
6-7 lbs lighter than the LHT.
The biggest ride difference comes from the geometry of the bikes, AND your
set up. My feeling was always that I was sitting on top of the Surly, and
sitting IN the Riv. There is no better or worse. Just different.
A final thought. I stripped my LHT last winter and had it powder coated.
In that time I rode my AHH and a Cheviot exclusively. My fear was that
when I reassembled the Surly I was going to be disappointed. I was not. I
was every bit as great as I had remembered. That being said, if I had to
have just one bike (horrors), it would most certainly be a Rivendell.

The only option is to own both! Good luck.

I've used (and sell) Swagman racks. They worked well enough. I just got a
Thule Doubletrack Pro, and for bikes with fenders, baskets and bags, I
think it's the best. That's the ways it's worked for me anyway.

I have a PBH of 81 and ride my saddle at 70.5. My AHH is a 54. I could
have gotten the 55 but I wanted a bike with 650b wheels (at the time the 55
would have had 700c wheels). I would never say that I had "too much"
seatpost showing. It's not nearly a "fist full". I don't think what the
fellas told you was a contradiction at all. However, at the end of the day
it's going to be your bike, and your decision.

[RBW] Now (nearly) fully stocked

2016-05-27 Thread Christopher Wiggins

Sams have arrived and are ready to roll. Mid sized Appas still in stock.
One big Clem left until late summer. It's a great time to visit Indy and
ride a Riv. If you decide to buy you can even ride around the Speedway and
see some of the craziness of the 100th running of the 500!

[RBW] Re: NEED a tip for slipping seatpost head

2016-01-06 Thread Christopher Wiggins
Reid,

Really hard to diagnose without actually putting a hand on it,
but...how long is the wrench? If it's a small (2" long) wrench, it
likely isn't long enough to provide the torque you need to really tighten
the post. The wrenches we use in the shop are 4-5" long.

Depending on how old the post is it may not be a bad idea to pull the bolt
and apply a bit of grease.

I hope that helps. Good luck.

Re: [RBW] thoughts on the current state of the Riv-ish bicycle marketplace

2013-04-22 Thread Christopher Wiggins
Make no mistake. H2 is still race geometry. If you play your cards
right, you can get the bars level with the saddle. Most folks are going to
be stuck with (minimum) 2-3 cm of drop.

 H2 Fit

H2 features a slightly higher head tube to put less strain on your back
and neck. It's the right way to get most riders, including many of our Pro
Team riders, in the right place. With no need for high-rise stems or spacer
stacks, the look is nothing but pro.

enjoyment of cycling. In the 1970’s and 80’s we cycled to be closer to
nature, for the environment, for our health, for the simple beauty of
cycling.” For these reasons SunXCD will focus on touring and randonneuring
components which were the focus of SunTour during its heyday.

Of course, most of us Riv fans will note that this echoes Grant's
published opinions over the years, as well as the sales pitches of a few
brands who've tried, with varying success, to get into the Riv-ish segment
of the market. I discovered Riv almost 10 years ago because I wanted a
certain type of bike that didn't seem to exist at local shops. What I
wanted was a touring bike, and the Atlantis I bought filled that desire.
Had I been able to find a Trek 520 locally, or if the LHT existed back
then, my story may have taken some different turns. But it was certainly
true back then that any readily available higher quality bike was going to
be some kind of impractical skinny tire road bike. Not my style.

But things have changed drastically. Sure, many of us are baffled by
electronic shifting and seemingly delicate CF and 11-sp cassettes that have
become available. But at the same time, a HUGE variety of touring and
adventure bikes, parts, and accessories have become not only available,
but mainstream. So while I wish Junzo and SunTour success, I thought his
rationale seemed hollow, or at least 5-10 years too late.

[RBW] Re: thoughts on the current state of the Riv-ish bicycle marketplace

2013-04-20 Thread Christopher Wiggins
Jim,

While in more enlightened bike markets this may be true; here in
Indianapolis, we're just now starting to catch up. I've been swimming
against the current for 4 years now. It's just this year that customers
don't give me the you've got 2 heads look when I suggest something like a
LHT.
The industry has conditioned consumers to think they need all the gizmos.
It's going to take as many of the smaller companies as we can get to
provide a counter balance.

Ride on!

[RBW] Re: Dutch Fender Light Question

You can cut the bolt down, or use a presta valve nut as a spacer. Haven't

Just picked up one of the dutch fender lights -

When I went to install, realized that the screw is too long, it will rub

Tips for how to shorten the bolt? Am I doing something wrong? Bolt seems
pretty long to me, I am guessing more people than just me would have the
 problem.

 Appreciate the help in advance!
