[RBW] Re: Going from Sam (60cm to New Atlantis (59cm) - asking the unaskable: how will the New Atlantis feel?

2020-05-28 Thread Daniel Betancourt
I have a 61 Sam and ordered a 62 Atlantis two weeks ago. I am curious on
the ride differences as well. My buddy that owns an Atlantis swears by the
bike and I am building out the bike in a similar fashion as the Sam except
for 700/36 XT/Atlas wheels by Rich and a quill stem mount shifter to try
out something different than bar end shifters. I'm looking forward to
having a mirror hanging off the end of my bar.

[RBW] Now I can clean fish on the back of my bike!

2017-04-18 Thread Daniel Betancourt
I'm prepping for a Key Largo to Key West bike ride this Thursday/Friday.
Planning on biking from Key Largo to Marathon (56 miles) on Thursday
morning and then from Marathon to Key West (50 miles) on Friday morning.
I've been using a small Sackville Saddlesack for my local rides but for
this longer trip, I want to carry a few extra items on the bike, just in
case.

I ended up getting a Tubus Logo Evo Carrier rear rack back in January but
have not been too happy with the width of the top of the rack as my medium
Sackville Saddlesack sags on one or the other side more than usual. We had
a really light plastic cutting board not being used and I decided to drill
a few holes and secure it with tie down straps. Here are a few pics of the
cutting board and with the bag on top of it. It seems to be doing the
trick. I'll post an update to the ride when I get back.

[RBW] Re: New (to my wife) Betty Foy

2017-03-10 Thread Daniel Betancourt
Thanks for all the informative posts. I went ahead and ordered a Brooks B67
S saddle through Amazon. She can try that out and see if she likes it
better.

I think those pedals are gaudy but it's her bike, so I'll have the MKS
Lambda pedals on standby just in case she ends up wanting to swap them out.

I put a basket on that front rack last night along with the red cargo net
(I think that is what it's called) that I had ordered from Riv previously.
I've been told I suck at picking colors so that's typically her department.
We'll see how it all fleshes out, but so far she seems to like the bike.

[RBW] New (to my wife) Betty Foy

2017-03-10 Thread Daniel Betancourt
I bought the frame, wheels, and brakes from another owner on this forum
earlier last month. I finally acquired all the needed parts and decided to
just have the local bike shop assemble it.

We picked it up yesterday. She was fine with the colors but after seeing
the bright red pedals on the finished product, I ended up ordering a pair
of silver MKS Lambda Pedals.

We rode my Sam & her new Betty about 1/2 mile to her Mom's last night. Her
only complaint is how hard the new Brooks Imperial B17 Narrow Bike Saddle
is as compared to the gel saddle she has on her road bike. I told her it
would take some time getting used to it and there is a break in period.
We'll continue to adjust the seat and hopefully find a comfortable setup. I
tried the bike at her Mom's to see the difference between her saddle and
mine and it didn't bug me, but I've got 750 miles into my saddle at this
point and am used to the leather seat.

My next adventure will be biking the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail
next month. Les is supposed to come along and my wife will be coming along
in the car. The game plan at this time is to bike from Key Largo to
Marathon on day 1, and then from Marathon to Key West on Day 2. The rest of
day 2, 3, & 4 will include partying it up in Key West. I can't wait for
that trip!!

I hope we don't party as hard as this guy did in Key West!! :b

[RBW] Feb 24th Century Ride on the Sam Hillborne

2017-03-08 Thread Daniel Betancourt
I finished my first Century ride after around 2 months of preparation. I'm
including a few pics of the ride below. I took the day off of work as I
wanted to get the ride in before our trip to New Orleans the following day.

The weather was nice that morning as there was no rain, it wasn't cold, and
the winds laid down for the most part. I got out of the house just before 6
am and decided to hit the bike trail outside of our neighborhood that I've
been preparing on. I'm fortunate that the trail goes 40 miles in one
direction, so I would finish 80% of the ride just by completing one loop.
The ride was uneventful until I got 70 miles in. I ended up with a nasty
upper leg cramp that forced me to take a break for about 30 minutes and I
had to stop periodically the last 30 miles which killed my expected average
speed. I'm not complaining as I was just happy to finish the ride in one
piece. :)

I did get a kick out of seeing the artwork on a section of the trail on the
back of a large section of fences facing the trail. There are some talented
people out there that put some serious time in. The last pic below is a
trail that leads to a stream under a bridge that I've seen kids playing in
the past. They have some rope tied to a tree where they swing into the
water, but as the water levels are low right now I can't imagine it's
getting much use.

This is my longest ride and prior to purchasing this bike, my longest ride
was just over 60 miles. Overall I was happy with how the bike performed.
I'm still getting used to this leather seat and that along with the leg
cramp caused me the most discomfort at the later part of the ride, but to
be fair I remember feeling the same way on my 60-mile ride I took about 7
years ago on my road bike with a gel seat. One nice thing I lacked on this
ride was number wrists/hands. That has for the most part gone away and was
always an issue when riding my road bike.

[RBW] Mounting a Sackville TrunkSack Large on the front rack of a Sam Hillborne?

2017-01-31 Thread Daniel Betancourt
I currently have a Nitto M18 front rack and ordered the Sackville TrunkSack
Large to mount in front of the bike. Has anyone ever mounted this bag on
their front rack, and if so what rack and method did you use to secure the
bag?

I ordered the Deluxe Porteur Rack (see liink below) to better
accommodate the large trunksack but am now worried about the 2.6 lbs it
weighs and how it will affect handling on the bike. I'm wondering if I
should cancel the rack order and try and get the trunksack to mount on my
existing M18 rack.

John,

What bike do you have that porteur rack installed on? I'm asking as that

Thanks for all the feedback. I ended up ordering that plate for the hotshot
light as well as I own that light and want to try that out as well to compare.

2017-01-17 Thread Daniel Betancourt
Thanks for all the feedback. I ended up finding that "Busch & Muller
Toplight Line senso Bike Cycling Tail / Rear Red Light" on eBay and ordered
it from there. If they would have had it in stock at Riv I would have
purchased it from them.

[RBW] Recommendation of a rear USB light or reflector that I can attach to the back of my Nitto R14 rear rack to cover those holes?

2017-01-17 Thread Daniel Betancourt
I'm looking at the Hotrod 50 USB light they have on the Riv site but I'm
not sure if it alone will connect to the rear of my R14 rear rack.

http://cygolite.com/product/hotrod-50-usb/

I've got my old light clipped to my bag but would like to put either a
light or a reflector on the back of the rack that totally covers the holes
(see pic of the back of the rack below).

Thanks in advance for any advice.
Dan

Re: [RBW] A nice morning for a ride

2017-01-15 Thread Daniel Betancourt
Nice! Looks like you had a fun time. I like the color of that bike.

What is entailed with the brevet series ride(s)? How far do you go and is
it with a large group or do you ride solo or with a small group of friends?

I haven't gone on any group rides yet and just ride solo or with the wife.
I have looked up a number of Facebook & Meetup groups in the area but still
haven't gone on that type ride yet.

[RBW] A nice morning for a ride

2017-01-14 Thread Daniel Betancourt
I'm on my second week of training for a century ride and today I was
supposed to go 35 miles (see training chart below). I normally go around
10-20 miles per ride and haven't biked past 25 miles since September so I
was looking forward to both going longer distances and seeing how the bike
rode and how I felt afterward.

WEEK DATE RANGE SUN
RECOVERY MON
REST TUE
INTERVAL WED

INTERVAL FRI
REST SAT
ENDURANCE
1 Jan 1-7 10 Off 10 Off 10 Off 28
2 Jan 8-14 10 Off 10 Off 10 Off 35

8 Feb 19-25 10 Off 10 Off 10 Off 100

I first rode through downtown Oviedo which like Key West is known for their
roaming chickens and had to take a pic.

There is a short offroad section which mud and rocks that I hate riding
over with my road bike (see pic below). The Sam handled it with no issues.
That is a big plus for me.

I averaged 13.2 mph over the ride and was generally pleased with the
performance and lack of my back and wrists getting sore when riding my road
bike.

My legs are sore from the ride but that is to be expected. I'm still
getting used to the saddle and haven't ridden that distance in some time so
I'm a bit saddle sore. Another explanation is that the saddle still isn't
broke in yet. One nice thing I was able to do was to change my riding
stance to sitting straighter up which altered the pressure on the saddle
more on my pubic bones and less on my groin. I don't have that option on my
road bike.

So far I'm loving this new bike! I'm having a Nitto R14 rear rack installed
on the bike today and looking forward to going out on a group social ride
around downtown Winter Park tomorrow with the wife. That should be a lot of
fun.

[RBW] Re: Fenders installed. Rack moved to the front. Now to figure out if I bought the right sized basket & how to secure it.

2017-01-11 Thread Daniel Betancourt
Basket mounted and I used black cable ties (rated for 45 lbs). I ended up
putting black electrical tape on the rack to minimize scratches. It seems
strong enough from a few test tugs.

[RBW] Fenders installed. Rack moved to the front. Now to figure out if I bought the right sized basket & how to secure it.

2017-01-10 Thread Daniel Betancourt

I'm waiting for a Nitto R14 rear rack to arrive this week but in the
meantime I had the fenders installed and the rear rack moved up front.

I'm going to dig around other posts and pics to see how others with a
similar frame have mounted this size basket. I may need to go with a deeper
basket but am not sure yet. I've seen a few people use zip ties to secure
the basket to the rack.

gone back to work on Tuesday after being off for 9 days and then have to
fly out to Southern California for work! Really looking forward to biking

Re: [RBW] Re: Frame Pumps for a 64 Hillborne

2016-12-21 Thread Daniel Betancourt
James,

Thanks for the info and nice bike! I like that rear bag. It looks similar
to the MTX Trunk Bag EX I have on my Giant OCR. I ordered the small gray
Sackville SaddleSack bag for the new bike. I think that bag will do well
for most of my biking but will most likely get the medium bag before "Les
the Enabler" and I bike the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage trail next
spring.

No worries. I called Rivendell earlier and they first corrected me and said
that I'm getting the 62 inch Sam Hillborne and that the HPX-4 should fit on

Thomas,

Did you ever get an answer to your question regarding the HPX-4 fitting on

Thanks in advance for any info.

[RBW] Re: I need help. I have become a Riv enabler.

2016-12-20 Thread Daniel Betancourt
I wish! They are still waiting for the Choko handlebar to arrive and it
should be shipped out soon afterward. With an estimated 5 day shipping time
from LA to Central Florida, I'm not expecting it until next week. In the
meantime, I've been the https://www.traillink.com/ site looking for trails
to take the bike on. I'm hoping to get that enabler Les to meet up with me
on his Riv! :)

A little late on my reply, but nice looking bike Bill! I looked at several
Rosco frames before settling on the Sam Hillborne and if I didn't go with
the Sam I would most likely have gone with a Rosco.
