Pam, you might try a trick I've used to stiffen the bag enough to
prevent sagging. Get your hands on a sheet of corrugated plastic - the

stuff that is used for political campaign yard signs (they should soon be
readily available for no cost ; )

Cut the plastic sheet to fit the interior width of the bag and long
enough to cover the bottom and extend up onto the front wall of the bag.
The corrugations need to run across the width of the cut sheet so you can
fold it to curve up the front wall. The sheet should be sized to fit
slightly snug to prevent it shifting around inside the bag. It's a low
cost, light weight solution that repurposes bit of plastic that is
otherwise destined for the land fill.

Your Schwinn looks like a sweet little bike in its own right.

[RBW] Re: BikeSnobNYC, 2022 Five Boro NYC Bike tour promo video on Platypus. Reviews of prior tours requested.

2022-02-04 Thread Dave S
Yes, absolutely do it... once. It's a great way to experience the city
that you'll always remember. He's spot on regarding all the cool places
you get to ride on with your bike that is soul-crushing in a car.

That said, there are SO many people that depending on where you are in the
pack, it's unrideable at times (mostly sharp turns and the approaches to
bridges). Getting to the start is a bit of a hassle. There are special
path trains and ferries. I recommend parking/starting at the finish
(Staten Island) and taking the ferry in the morning instead of dealing with
it afterward.

I've recommended it to a few folks who then made me do it with them again
and those times the PITA factor outweighed the magic that only exists the
first time.

How about the early 80's Schwinn Super Sport SP? They're not easy to find
but it has some pretty decent clearances and is also fairly light(ish).

I've attached a lousy picture of my Bottecchia from shortly before I
finished putting it together. I bought it as a frame and fork from Dale
over on CR. He thought it was a Giro d'Italia or Professional, though
possibly a different year than the catalog. I can feel the rifling in the
steerer so will buy the Columbus tubing. But it's a taller frame (for me)
at 60cm ctt and uses a 27.0 seatpost, so presumably some SP mixed in.
 It's
a great ride, and an answer to a question I posed to the list a few years
ago about the rarity of Columbus tubed bikes with clearance for sizable
tires plus eyelets for fenders. Yes, they exist! I have Challenge Strada
Biancas (700X30) on it with plenty of room. I don't ride it that much,
though, as it's just a smidge big for me. If someone runs across a way to
shrink frames, please feel free to call me.

Re: [RBW] What is the seller's safety with PayPal and other payments.

2021-03-08 Thread Dave S
I've been selling a lot of things online during the pandemic and the seller
protections are very minimal across the board. It seems like most of the
payment services treat individuals like businesses who just have to accept
some amount of loss due to damage, theft, etc. I've had:

   - issues with buyers claiming something didnt work, return it (my
shipping cost both ways) only to find it works perfectly upon its return.
   - freight damage from fedex ground (purchased through shipbikes) that
resulted in weeks of runaround with claims. Fedex actually picked the bike
up, brought it back to their facility and weighed it, verified it was
"light" and then returned it to me. All the seller wanted was a credit for
missing parts that fell out of the box when it was destroyed. He ended up
saying "forget it" and I gave a full refund.
   - Right now I'm dealing with a chainring that went missing (USPS) after
shipment. USPS told us to wait because things are backed up. Now we're
past the USPS claim window, but not past the Paypal claim window. Not sure
   how this ends.

None of these seem to be malicious but all the payment systems definitely
favor the buyer and most all of the risk is on the seller.

Re: [RBW] Leah’s Rivendell Raspberry Platypus

2020-12-02 Thread Dave S
Sorry, I didnt mean that to be discouraging, it was meant as a lucky
break! Smaller parts are less of an issue but on big expanses (like rims
and stems and seat posts) the unevenness of the fade is not cool.

I once bought a bike from a guy who moved to NJ from Arizona and it was
clear which direction he stored the bike in. The stem, seatpost, spacers,
cranks, and handlebars were silver on side and black on the other!

Well...I’m anodizing a bunch of stuff from Analog again, so I suppose
it’s only done for NOW. When I forewent the rose rims that took most of
 the
rose out of my build, so I need to add some back in and tie it in with the
teal. I thought I would be done and riding off into the sunset and not
thinking on appearances anymore, but I’m finding it’s a process.

The rack situation is a strange one. I barely have a fistful of seat
post and will likely need the large Nitto Rear Rack and am crossing my
fingers it doesn’t come up too high. I don’t want to make my bike heavier,
but it’s unnerving not being able to carry anything. I like the front
without a rack; I’ve always wanted a bike set up that way, it it was
impractical. I have and like the light over the fork. So, I’ll most likely
 get the rear rack.

Tonight I got to set up my bars how I wanted them. I had bought and
stowed a beautiful little Spurcycle bell and iPhone mount for this
raspberry bike. My old mirror for my Betty Foy was installed, and finally,
a string of Christmas lights. I don’t know that I’ll keep the Bananasax, I
just can’t seem to work with it. I’ll keep trying. Clearly, the bike is
 not
 finished, but it’s PROGRESS.

Now, where is that Bill Lindsay guy - I want him to say APPROVE.

Regarding directions: Plug this into your GPS:

Regarding parking: Lot 1 might fill up sooner, but Lots 1 and 2 are
right next to each other, so it really doesn't matter; we'll see each
other. Even if you park on the street somewhere, just come down to the
 trail.

Regarding the trail surface: I haven't been on the HHT since 2018, but
I seem to remember that most of the trail is paved, and what isn't is a
very fine crushed stone surface -- in other words, any bike and any tire
 will be fine on it.

Regarding the climb: They are approaches to a fairly high bridge, but
the grade really isn't bad at all.

Regarding the ride from Sandy Hook to Long Branch: It's a nice (and
shorter) alterntive to going back to Matawan. As Dave pointed out, the
ride from Sandy Hook to Long Branch starts off alongside a large rock
seawall on a paved trail, but that's only for a couple of miles -- after
that, you're on Rt. 36 as you enter downtown Sea Bright. After Sea Bright,
there's a wide shoulder and you pass nice homes and some beach clubs. At
Long Branch Rt. 36 turns into a four-lane highway (Ocean Blvd), so I've
turned onto side streets from there to get to the train station. A
ride along Ocean Ave (not Blvd) and on the promenade at this time of year
(no crowds) would be very nice, as it's obviously right along the
 ocean.

To give you an idea of what some of the route is like, the photos in
the below link are from a ride where I took the train from Linden to
Aberdeen/Matawan, rode east along the HHT, turned right after the bridge
(bypassed Sandy Hook that time), rode down Rt. 36 and hit the beach at
Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park in Long Branch to go for a swim before
 taking the train home:

And this one is of Sandy Hook itself:

Re-radiusing the wavy fender to fit 700c is very easy. Velo Orange even
has a blog on how to do
it: https://velo-orange.com/pages/re-radiusing-fenders

You'll have to gently squeeze the fender together so it ends up being a bit
narrower. The wavy is pretty wide from the start so you'll probably be ok
if your tire choice isn't super wide.

NYC peeps can pick up the henry hudson trail or the edgar felix bikepath
almost directly from the train stations. Both are somewhat scenic with
almost no elevation. Sandy Hook is great too but I think the ferry shuts
down at the end of sept. That said, you can just about ride the HHT to
Sandy Hook.

[RBW] Re: Bike Racks, non hitch recommendations.

2020-07-29 Thread Dave S
I bought the 3 bike with that specific idea (spacing out two bikes) but
folding the rack up is much more difficult with the 2 upper supports vs the
single. The 2 bike version has three spliney parts with two smooth areas
for folding the legs, the 3 bike only has two splines and one smooth
section which makes it a bit of a puzzle to collapse and setup. It sounds
minor but I find it infuriating. I fold mine up often and toss it in the
hatch and the added frustration wasn't worth it.

[RBW] Re: Bike Racks, non hitch recommendations.

2020-07-27 Thread Dave S
Saris Bones is my favorite. We have the 2 and the 3. The 2 with the 3
legs is easier to use/install but I was frustrated with the middle leg
(bone?) blocking my rear wiper so I go the 3 which has two outboard legs.
Wiper still hits 'em so I just went back to the 2.

Thanks for sharing! Not sure if this is always the case but, often, theres a
noticeable difference between oem and retail tires. The tread is usually
identical but the construction is different. I learned this by buying a bike
with tires that are Folding/TC in the retail version and wire bead/tube
required on the bike.

[RBW] Re: PSA Clem Smith Jr/Clememtine Sacramento Craigslist with interesting ad

2020-03-26 Thread Dave S
Looks like a 650b/52cm to me. I would doubt this is stolen. I buy and sell
a fair amount of used bikes and I try to avoid stolen stuff. Although the
seller is clueless, that doesn't mean it was acquired illegally. I deal
with so many estate cleanout and storage auction guys that do a quick
google search on the biggest word on the bike and list it.

Also, I don't think they'd post the bike's VIN and their license plate in
the ad if they were a criminal.

[RBW] Are the FSA Duron Headsets on EBay Legit?

2020-03-19 Thread Dave S
I've got a fun project headed my way courtesy of Karl and I'm in need of a
headset. Riv seems sold out so I did some googling and there appears to be
a lot of OEM FSA Duron headsets on eBay for around 20 bucks cheaper than a
retail box one. I've bought some OEM takeoff type parts in the past
without issue but there are a few things that strike me as peculiar.

   1. What the heck bike are these somewhat nicer threaded headsets OEM on?
   2. Why do half of the listing include a threadless star nut and top cap?

Just curious if anyone else has bought one of these and if it was first
quality. Thanks!

Dual leg kickstand. The bike will balance on three point depending on
rear/front load. Also the bike is perpendicular to the ground compare to a

[RBW] Re: for the bunch only please

2010-01-18 Thread Dave S.
Thanks everyone. I got 59 corrections. Many repeats, but still a big
help.
We'll have the official version up soon...

Will the print version of the latest Reader be available online? In a
recent post at rivbike.com, it seemed like there was a pre-order
period where it was available for $5... which I missed.

This is great. Haven't found any problems yet, but I'll give it a good

Let's all make sure to buy a print copy when it comes out to support

  Sneak Preview: RR42 beta

  Hello All,

Dave from Riv here. Rivendell Reader 42 is 99% done. Usually we post
things to the NEWS section and immediately get emails with typos. So
this time, we're unveiling it to the bunch first, hoping that you all
might catch some typos before it officially goes live on the site
  and off to the printer.

So here it is. Please, please, please don't spread it around the net
just yet. Just print it out and enjoy it over the weekend. We'll post
the typo-corrected version on Monday. We don't want folks linking to
it just to have the link fail when we post corrections.

If you find a typo, please send me (d...@rivbike.com) an email with
all the info in the subject line, formatted thusly:
SUBJECT: Typos: pg. xx par. xx - correction

So your subject line should be something like, Typos: pg. 03 par. 09
  - Rivendale should be Rivendell
I won't be reading the email bodies or responding, so thank you in
  advance.
  Make sense?

There's no prize or incentive, just the satisfaction of being the
  first to read it.

  Hope you like it.

[RBW] Re: an imitation or just a coincidence?

2009-11-03 Thread Dave S.

Well put everyone. Violet Crown was new to me.
Made to order in Texas for only $1200 seems like a great deal.
Lugged steel, smart clearance, high bars, human name.
Can't complain 'bout that.

many Texans are upset about attaching Houston's name to a commercial
product.  Like naming a new hybrid vehicle after George Washington.

Hmmm, I'm not sure what to think. Funny how so many custom builders
are trying to make bikes like the ones Rivendell has been producing
for years.

actually, it makes perfect sense.  as far as I know, there aren't a
whole lot of lugged steel production frames available.  and what if
someone wanted a roadeo type rig before riv got around to offer such
a frameset?  or wants a different fit or geometry than rivendell
offers?  custom is just about the only alternative.  and in that case,
custom builders are making bikes that are intentionally un-rivish.

in any event, lots of framebuilders use lugged steel construction
because they share the same philosophy as Rivendell when it comes to
   building a bike - that's not imitation.

now, if you're talking about the rivendell aesthetic, that's a
separate matter.  but, tweed and twine and shellac don't make the
