[RBW] Decent $500-$600 off the shelf bike???

2013-04-10 Thread EastBayGuy
So my little sister is looking into getting a new/First bike. she plans on
going on a few S240's and will be commuting in the somewhat flat Davis, Ca
area. She is on a College Grad/working at Panera Budget.

My question is does anyone have any recommendations for a decent off the
shelf bike that is capable of strapping some gear onto and heading into the
hills?

Thanks in Advance..

On Christmas Day, my Uncle, Cousin and myself decided to Ride Mount
Tamalpais from Fairfax to my Aunts House in Larkspur. They Both had Full
Suspension Marin Racing Mountain Bikes and I was on My Atlantis with
Fenders and a Medium Saddlesack with a 6 pack of Sierra. :-). A
few Mountain Bikers along the way stopped and where amazed that my bike was
where it was on the Mountain with my little 47mm marathons. Besides
almost killing myself on Indian Trail it was nice to be able to keep my
pace with them even though my bike weighs almost double.

Heavy or light it all comes down to the rider, legs and Drive and
not necessarily the Machine.

@Ryan. I have never had any experience with panniers so I cannot compare the
two. I can say that with the Load up High it does NOT affect the handling
that much at all. In my own opinion, with the load up high it is almost an
extension of your own body weight through out the frame and does little to
mess with Handling. I may be wrong but its my opinion. 95% of the Bags that
are sold at Riv lift the weight up high, so there must be something to it.

Hi Y'all,

It was my Uncles 50th Birthday on Saturday so I took the opportunity to make
a mini trip out of it and headed out on Saturday morning and caught the
first Bart train to Embarcadero to start my Journey. The ride to Fairfax
was beautiful and I arrived a bit early so I decided to ride out to Samuel
P Taylor and doubled back to Fairfax for the Party.

Woke up a bit hung over and headed back to Samuel P Taylor for some
relaxation and to wait for a buddy to drive and meet me for the night. The
weather was amazing and clear for the night, but Monday would be a different
story.

Started riding to the Point Reyes Ranger Station to check in for my campsite
for the night and proceeded to Point Reyes Station for munchies at Bovine
Bakery and to wait for the Rain to subside so I could push to camp. After
eating to many Pastries and a few pieces of there amazing Pizza, I pressed
on to Sky Camp. I decided to Hike up 3 1/2 miles up Horse Trail to Sky Camp
and it was amazing even though I was getting rained on Hard all the way up.
Half way up and being soaked head to toe, I was second guessing my decision
to camp for the night. But I pressed on.

Set up camp and decided to wait out the storm. I was in my tent from 8:00 Pm
to 7:00 Am waiting out the storm, but the views in the morning of the fog
rolling in was definitely worth the cold and wetness. It
was absolutely beautiful.

I was supposed to stay another night at Hawk Camp but that was put on hold
since everything I had was soaked to the bone and I had to ride back in my
flip flops, since my Sambas were filled with water in the morning. I will
save that trip for when the weather is better. The medium saddle sack and my
Barsack kept everything dry, with a little help from some Garbage Bags and
Ponchos.

A great trip, meet allot of fellow bikers along the way and
will definitely do it again. Here are a few Pictures of the trip.

Hi Everyone

Selling my 56cm Canti 700c Sam Hillborne. After receiving my SimpleOne I
have decided that this is just a bit too small for me. I am the second owner
of this bike and it has been well taken care of and never abused. It does
have a few nicks from use but no dents or dings.

It comes with a Pletcsher Rack and Kickstand, along with the stock Tange
headset and Bottom Bracket.

Asking 850 local pick up but shoot me some offers. I really dont want to
deal with shipping.

[RBW] High Rocky Place, Mt Diablo Solo S240 on the SimpleOne

2011-08-10 Thread EastBayGuy
When I originally saw Grants Post awhile back on the S240 he did to High
Rocky place, I knew I had to do it. I wanted a challenge and I wanted a
test, so I decided to do it on the SimpleOne. I am glad I did and it was an
awesome Solo Trip. Thank you Grant for the directions and words of advice it
made my trip a successful one.

I headed out Monday Morning and rode from Lafayette to Borges Ranch in
Walnut Creek, Grabbed some Water and hit the Briones Mt Diablo Trail en
route to Rock City. I meet a nice couple who had a flat and no cement, so I
helped them out and set off. Some good Karma for what I had ahead of me.
Allot of walking along the Trail, but I didn't mind at all.
The scenery was absolutely Gorgeous and I wasn't even up the Mountain Yet.
It took about 3 hours to get to Rock City, where I had some of my lunch and
relaxed for an hour or so.

It was time to push to the South Gate Junction for another break and to
prepare for the push to Juniper. The Simple One in its 32/22 combination
proved to be perfect for the climb and the load(45 lbs w/bike?) I was very
happy with the performance and solid feel of the One. Made the 2.5 mile
climb to Juniper and took a well deserved 3 hour rest, finished my
lunch/Dinner, and waited for the sun to go down a bit until I pushed to
camp.

When I arrived I was awe struck at what was before me, the grandeur and
peacefulness of High Rocky Place is definitely one I will always remember.
The Wind was nasty (take a look at the video) and I am thankful I brought a
hammer (Thanks G) and earplugs. I think I logged about 3 hours of sleep.
Nonetheless it was truly Amazing. When I got home I slept for 13 hours
straight.

Pictures tell a better story and I am very happy I was able to do it on the
S-One.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/54527498@N06/sets/72157627402365342/

Enjoy!

I Highly Suggest doing some riding in the Lafayette/Moraga Area. You have
some trails and big bike lanes everywhere. Lafayette has done a great job
marking all of the routes with Mileage markers and directional arrows.
Anywhere up in the Castle Rock/Shell ridge area is allot of fun too if you
want to do some trails. Beautiful Area Too. If you are ever passing by the
Jaguar Dealership in Walnut Creek give me a wave.

[RBW] Re: SO/Quickbeam options

2011-07-27 Thread EastBayGuy
+1 for the SimpleOne. It is a beautiful handling bike on and off road. I
just took mine on a nice trail ride on the foothills of Mt Diablo yesterday.
The bike was amazing off road and very, very comfortable. With the white
Industries 22T freewheel it was a dream off road and the Moustache bars
allowed me to sit back and crank away at the hills. It was amazing to feel
the bike absorb all of the bumps and rocks, with my self weighing in at 230
and on Jack Browns.

I had a deposit on mine since January and I am very happy I was patient
enough and waited it out.

This was a dry run on my s240 to High Rocky place in a few weeks.

[RBW] Re: Solo s240- Mt Diablo

2011-07-13 Thread EastBayGuy
Manny,

Great trip, looks like a successful S240. Did you take the trails up
to the top? Allot of hiking and Biking if you did. I did a similar
trip in January when the weather was so nice.

We should facilitate a small group S240 if anyone is interested.

Cheers!

  Hi Everyone,

opening my eyes to there style of riding and riding philosophy, not to

I work in Walnut Creek and sell Jaguars and Land Rovers right across

Rovers when people ask me about them. They are always super smooth on
the road and very functional off road as well. It seems they go hand
in hand with what Range Rovers are known for, not to mention the
beauty, refinement and style of there bikes.

About 8 years ago I broke 9 bones in my back from a Snow Saucer
accident. I thought my days of physical activity were over and that I
would have to live with pain and soreness for the rest of my life.
Well 7 years went by, I gained 60 lbs and then I discovered bicycling
again and the Paleo Diet. I purchased a used Sam from a member off
this list and I have been riding ever since. With the handlebars high
and relaxed geometry it is the best anecdote for my back pain and
soreness. So now I have lost almost 50 lbs, my back pain is gone and I
plan to be riding for many miles ahead.

A million Thanks to everyone and I look forward to many years of
  cycling in my future.

[RBW] Re: Barsack reveiws?

2011-02-08 Thread EastBayGuy
I have to admit that the barsack is by far my favorite out of all of
my bags. Fully loaded up it does not affect handling at all and it
fits an enormous amount of stuff. I use the D rings on top all the
time with mini bungee Cords for leftovers from lunch to an extra
sweater or vest.It is a very well thought out bag that I really
see no way to improve upon except having it work with moustache
Bars.

Here it is on the Hillborne.

I have been trying to design an attachment to the Nitto F-15 bracket
that would allow it to be used with Moustache bars. We will see

[RBW] Mt Diablo S240 Report Pics

2011-01-29 Thread EastBayGuy
Hi Y'all,

Headed up to Mt Diablo on Thursday night for my first solo S240. Took
Fire Roads all the way to the top (Thank you Jim for the Heads up). It
was allot of hiking with the bike but the way down was a breeze. Just
picked up some new for 2011 47mm Marathons from Riv and they handled
beautifully on the trails.

Here are some pics of the Trip.

[RBW] Mt Diablo Fire Road Question - Solo S240

2011-01-25 Thread EastBayGuy
Hi Everyone,

Since the weather has been so beautiful in Northern California, I am
planning on doing the first S240 of the year up to Mt Diablo on the
Sam w/38 Marathons. For people who are familiar with the area I plan
on heading in from Castle Rock Park, shoot over to Shell Ridge Open
Space and head on up via Fire trails to Live Oak Campground.

Any one familiar with the fire trails up to the campsite? Just wanted
to get some input from someone who has done this before so I know what
to expect.

Thanks a Bunch and Happy Riding

Cheers from Sunny California!

[RBW] Re: New Simple one in green

2010-12-30 Thread EastBayGuy
Hi Y'all,

Stopped by Riv today to place My deposit on my Simpleone. The Green in
Person is definitely a dark and slimey green. Really nice color in
person. I would compare it to the original Quickbeam green but a bit
darker and definitely has that slimey glisten to it. I think with the
cream accents it will definitely be a winner. Looking forward to the
arrival in April. It's going to be a Long 4 months.

Oops. Forgot to mention. The color description was just from a color
sample in the paint brochure. So we will just have to see what it
looks like when they arrive. I know from experience that you can't
always trust such a small sample from a brochure, but I am sure she
will be pretty sweet.

[RBW] RB1 and sackville Sacks.....

Just wanted to get a few opinions on putting a medium sackville sack
( with silver hoop) and a barsack on my RB1. My buddies say I am crazy
to put this on a true road bike but I beg to differ.

I a 250 biggin and I want to get some opinions on if I am pushing the
limits for this frame. Not loading any crazy weight with it. Just
commuting and CC touring.

Opinions would be great.

Awsome Garage sale on Saturday BTW...
