Re: [RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Jog--Goal set, goal met

2018-03-12 Thread Frank Conway
Just finished Grant’s book. Makes a lot of since, since I’ve cut out many
carbs as of late. I did, however eat lots of fruit and found it just made me
more hungry so I cut most of that out and found it helped. The book has given
some new guidelines for me to try. It seems to me that it’s more about what
you don’t eat than what you do. I’ve had the flu for the past 4 days - also a
very effective way to lose weight but one I cannot recommend.

[RBW] Cotton Bar Tape - To Pad, Or Not

2016-04-24 Thread Frank Conway
Just ordered some TRP levers and while installing them I'm going to try cotton
bar tape with shellac on my Heron. Having always ridden cork bar tape, I'm

others.

So, if you use cotton tape, do you pad underneath, and if so what do you use?
Thanks in advance.

[RBW] Steerer Tube Honing

[RBW] Steerer Tube Honing

2016-03-28 Thread Frank Conway
I'm trying to put a fairly long Technomic stem in my Heron and it is only going
about halfway down the steerer tube. It didn't seem rusty or anything, but I
cleaned it up and tried taking a few thousandths off or knocking off any high
spots with a brake cylinder hone. It's nice and shiny now but to no avail.
Anyone encounter this before? If so, how'd you fix it?

[RBW] WTB Velo Orange Campagne

2016-03-19 Thread Frank Conway
I've been lusting after the GB25's but come to accept that I should spend the
money updating some of the other stuff on my newly acquired Heron. As such, I
decided to take the cheaper road and see if anyone has a used VO Campagne (I'd
also be interested in the decaleur as well) that they are looking to part with.

I'd consider similar bags as well but as used GB25 or Acorn is probably out of
my price range (although it can't hurt to throw a price at me, I suppose).

[RBW] Re: WTB Velo Orange Campagne

2016-03-18 Thread Frank Conway
I have a Nitto M12 already on the bike, so I wouldn't be interested in the
rack/bag combo. Although the VO bag is shorter, it is deeper and the volumes
are quite similar (at least on paper). Point taken on a used bag. With a
fairly low price point of new, I don't expect I'll find one at a price to make
it worthwhile (for either party) but figured it wouldn't hurt to throw the
"WTB" out there. Perhaps I should wait for a used GB25, but those probably
aren't too frequent. Patience is not one of my virtues!

Re: [RBW] Just Bought a Heron Randonneur

2016-03-14 Thread Frank Conway
Thanks for the welcomes!

I've only recently discovered the virtues of steel bikes, I've been steadily
testing my wife's patience. Having acquired a new plastic (I call it that in a
derogatory manner, but it is pretty nice) Ridley Fenix and two beautiful Eddy
Merckx steel bikes (MX Leader and a well used Corsa Extra fixed gear) in the
last six months, I had been looking for a low priced Trek 614 frame set to
convert into a rando bike. I then stumbled upon this for only $650, which
although a great deal was much more than I promised my wife that I would spend
"for my last bike for a long time".

Anyway, now I'm trying to justify spending a good amount on a bag. The Acorns
certainly look nice, but I'm not certain that I'm sold on them vs the Berthoud.
There doesn't seem to be a giant cost difference, and it seems there are many
long term owners of the GB that claim they remain waterproof for a long time.
That is very important to me.

That being said, I'm trying to keep an open mind. Rene, once I can figure out
the email offline thing on my phone, I'll hit you up and discuss the Acorn.

Thanks again. I'm excited to be in this group!

P.S. - Anyone have any idea what year range my bike may be?

[RBW] Just Bought a Heron Randonneur

2016-03-13 Thread Frank Conway
I can still barely walk but I managed to ride it 6 miles today. The B17 is new
to me (always had racier stuff). Going to take some getting used to but I
think I'll like it. I'm going stir crazy!

I apologize in advance for these replies to be disjointed but being a new
member my posts are still being moderated (I'll be nice, moderators, I
promise!) and there is a delay. Anyway, this was from Massachusetts.

I'm leaning more and more towards spending the money on the GB, but I seem to
waffle back and forth hourly!
