I don't rely on my Supernova tailight alone but since I am already pushing the Dyno hub I like to take advantage of the battery-free taillight. I always carry an extra battery-powered blinkie. The trouble is that I don't have a place to put it. The fender-mounted Spinnegas don't flash. My chainstays are blocked by the rack and fender so my Princeton Tec Swerve is a no-go. [RBW] Re: Nitto Front Rack / Canti Link Wire Interference
I had the same problem. Raising the yoke to the height shown in the Rivendell photo reduced the mechanical advantage far too much. Some folks will say it is no big deal, but I disagree. So, I went with the Tektro CR720's which, with their wide profile, compensate for the high yoke. However, having a very short head tube, I couldn't get the yoke high enough to make the brakes feel good. So, I used the Problem Solvers wide yoke which similates a high yoke, In the end, it works. [RBW] Mini Front Racks and Canti Brakes
Hello All, I am curious to hear your experiences with mini front racks such as the Nitto Mini or Mark's Rack and cantilever brakes. I currently have Nitto Mini-style rack with a post that mounts through the fork crown. I'm using Tektro CR720 high profile brakes, older Suntour mtb levers and a Problem Solvers wide yoke. Having tried a number of different brakes, I found that I needed this exact combination to get the yoke high enough (above the rack post) and simultaneously have enough mechanical advantage. I am thinking of setting up a Hunq'a with a Mark's Rack with Paul mtb levers and the Shimano low profile cantis. Has anyone tried this setup and does raising a standard yoke above the rack post reduce the mechanical advantage too much? [RBW] Re: Mini Front Racks and Canti Brakes
Thanks, Minh. I was wondering if the IRDs might be wide enough to create the right mechanical advantage. I guess they are not. I propose a bracket for the Mark's rack with a big square opening for the straddle cable. Many of the photos on the Rivendell site show the small front racks with caliper brakes. The photos with canti brakes simply show a higher yoke. I wonder if they are not pickey about the feel at the lever. Or, maybe the mtb-style levers have a little less mech advantage than drop bar levers? Canti brakes make my head hurt! [RBW] Do I need this Hunq'a?
Hunq'a owners -- I could use some advice: I have a Hunqapillar frame new in the box. It has been there for months. also have a box full of nice parts, some new from Rivendell, some NOS/Vintage. I had planned to make it a bullmouse'd mtb with thumbshifters, touring triple and the fat Schwalbe Big Apples 2.15. Two years ago, I reduced my fleet to a hardtail (for the singletrack and the tough eastern PA trails) and my custom Capricorn go-to bike which I use for everything else and which sees 90% of my riding on roads, fire roads, gravel and the occasional, light singletrack. The Capricorn has 1.75 Schwalbe Marathons and the frame was modeled after my old XO-2. http://www.flickr.com/photos/theginz/sets/72157625185718404/ All of that said, do I really need this Hunqapillar build? Sure, it would be nice to bomb a few trails without having to ride my hardtail with squishy fork, clipless pedals, knobby tires racey geometry across town in misery. But, the Capricorn could do that if I removed the fenders. I do not tour, but hope to someday. The Hunq'a would be better suited for that. Also, I am quite small, 5'4, so finding frames that fit is extremely difficult. The Hunq'a is a bargain in that respect. Should I part with the Hunq'a frame while it is new and invest in some other stuff like a dyno hub, more racks and luggage, a second wheelset for the Capricorn? [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar Bottom bracket size ?
Well...interesting choice of hub. I have the same hub on my bike. However, mine is an older model from the early 90's. I believe I measured the chainline at 42.5mm. Your's may be a bit different, though it is most likley 45mm. If you use the Sugino with a 110mm, that ought to give you a 45mm chainline in front, as well. Even if your hub and freewheel yield 42.5, it is close enough. With a 9speed or 8speed cassette, you start to get further away because those are generally a 47.5mm chainline. However, if you are using friction shifting (and I hope you are!!), especially in the front, it should all work fine. The biggest concern is the chain rubbing the front derailluer in a indexed setup. If your chainline isn't perfect, you may end up with that annoying rub in certain gear combos. As far as chainstay clearence, I doubt that you'll have any issues with the 110mm but you may want to email Riv to be certain. My Hunq'a frame is still in the box at the moment so I'm not sure either. :) Ginz On Jun 20, 11:54 am, Garth garth...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Ginz, I currently am using 135mm Phil 7sp FW hubs with multiple sets of wheels. I may go to a 9sp. cassette one day, but I don't see what difference that would make regarding the BB length. If you have further thoughts on this, please do share! I'd use the same 110mm Tange for the Bombadil if I ever did get some 9 speed hubs. I'm considering a Hunqapillar or a Sam frame frame currently. I know the Sam can use the 110 also, and it would be great if the Hunq could use it also so I'd only need to stock a 110mm BB size for all my bikes. I always considered BB length a chainring clearance of the chainstay issue, not a hub issue. On my early production Bombadil I have a 45-46mm chainline with the 24/36/48 XD and 110mm Tange cartridge BB, clearance for the rings is just right. I was told by Riv on the later Bombadils, they required a 115mm BB. I was hoping the Hunqapillars would take a 110mm and not a 115mm like the later Bombadils, hence my question. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar Bottom bracket size ?
It won't depend so much on the frame as it will on your rear hub and cassette or freewheel. Assuming you have a 135mm hub that is, presumably a 9speed or 8speed freehub, a 113mm is probably the best choice. If you are using a 7sp or 8sp freewheel hub, not as likely given the 135mm spacing, tell us the exact hub you are using and I'm sure someone here will have the answer. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Reporting back: I found an old but lightly used Shimano XCE braze-on front der. on eBay. I swapped it for the IRD Alpina-d and, sure enough, the action of my Silver shifter is a bit easier on my thumb. Perhaps the lever arm provides more leverage or the spring is a bit lighter. Either way, I'm sticking with the XCE. I imagine that if indexing, specifically with brifters or rapid fire, the difference would be less noticeable if at all. Since I need a braze-on front der. that will work with a 26/36/46, I ordered an old, cheap Shimano from eBay. I'm not a fan of drops, either. My arms are too short. On a singlespeed/fixed gear, I want something wide for leverage. [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar or Bombadil for the trails?
I am doing nealy the same thing! I had a custom built last year that functions as my Atlantis set up with 26 x 1.75 tires, Albatross bars with Silver bar ends, fenders, lights and baggage. This one functions as my daily ride, commuter, light tourer and all-day, long-ride bike. I then ordered a Hunqapillar which will be setup with 26 x 2.3 Big Apples, thumb shifters and Nitto Bullmoose. This will be my light trail bike and cruiser. When needed, I'll swap the handlebars and make it my loaded tourer. After ten years of riding as an adult and trying many different bikes, I finally realized that I will be happy with two similar frames with completely different setups. I looked so long for frames that fit me well and were comfortable. So, don't be afraid to stay with what works even it if is a bit redundant. Yes, one Atlantis could do all of those things, but you'll spend your Friday nights swapping handlebars, racks and pedals. :) Ginz On Aug 25, 5:30 pm, RJM rjme...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks for all the suggestions. [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar or Bombadil for the trails?
With regard to the Hunq'a vs. Bombadil question: I would be inclined to stick with the 26 wheels of the Hunq'a so that wheels can be shared with the Atlantis. You'll also save a few bucks in exchange for the extra fanciness of the Bombadil. On Aug 26, 9:27 am, Ginz theg...@gmail.com wrote: I am doing nealy the same thing! [RBW] Re: Trangia experiments
Check out www.minibulldesign.com. Tinny is quite the tinkerer and manufacturers compact alcohol stoves. If you search through his videos, there are many devoted to the pros and cons of various alcohol fuels, dehyrating food for camping trips, recipies and even baking with a alcohol stove. Have a look! His new interest seems to be homemade recumbent bicycles. If there is some residual alcohol in the spirit burner after cooking, can the alcohol be saved in the burner (with the lid closed) for the next day? The fuel can be stored inside the burner for the next day (or the next couple of days), provided that the lid is properly closed and the o- ring is undamaged. However, it is essential that the burner have [sic] cooled down completely before the lid is closed. Please note that the alcohol must not be stored in the burner for a longer period of time. Seems like the person who emailed you didn't read Trangia's own literature! It IS a bummer to have a leaky Trangia. It's frustrating. They are/ were? designed to be carried with fuel in them and it's a nice feature. Luckily, the burners are about 12 dollars. I replaced my leaky burner 2 years ago and have over 150 field days with the stove without a leak. Storing fuel in the stove over a month or more hasn't been an issue either, though I'll acknowledge there's really not good reason to do this. [RBW] Re: Tektro CR720 w/Marks Rack Conflicting
Yeah, that sounds like one of those incompatibilities you only come across through personal experience. You could try some lower-profile brakes or the Nitto M12 rack. [RBW] Suntour Sprints and Shimano Barcon Pods
I received some NOS Suntour Sprint LD-4850 shifters for brazed on bosses and a used set of Shimano Ultegra bar end shifter pods. To make these work, I believe I will have to make two modifications: 1) On the bar end pod where the square-holed washer rests, there is a small, semi-curcular nub (technical term) that must be ground off (or the washer notched) before the washer will rest flush against the pod. 2) The tab on the square-holed washer which acts as a stop when installed on downtube bosses must be cut off and ground smooth. Has anyone else tried this setup and had success? The modifications seem very simple. Thanks, Ginz -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Replacement Cantilever Pad Choices
I'm using Tektro CR720s with both Kool Stop Mountain and Thinline pads. The Mountain pad is much better for these brakes. In the future, I will only use Thinlines with v-brakes. I believe the Yokozuna pads have the same compound as Kool Stop. How about Avid, Jagwire and Ritchey, all good pads or so I am told and popular with the Cyclocross folks. I was not crazy about the IRD Cafam brakes. If your canti studs are not the correct length, or even a hair too short, the bolts bind the arms as you tighten them down. I had no success with the IRDs though they seemed very nice. If you are mounting them on a Rivendell frame, might want to give them a call to check their experience with the IRDs. One more note: If you have only tried smooth-post brakes and pads, definitely try the CR720s or the Cafams. With threaded-post pads, the adjustment is completely and causes of squealing are completely different and you might find that Kool Stop pads work better than all others. Just a through. [RBW] Grip King Impressions
