Hey thanks Bill, I’m in Portland and could definitely go browse used part
bins or see what shops have as take-offs. At this moment buying on the list

Re: [RBW] Noodle bars: Any upsweep on the flats?

2016-06-14 Thread Jack B
Yeah the B135 sounds like it would be a good fit, except for the
limited width. 45cm in itself is almost wide enough, but that's measured c
to c at the bar ends, right? That style of bar is going to be much narrower
at the flats, I'd think.

Sounds like I had my terminology wrong earlier when I was talking about the
ramps. I meant the drops. Right now I've tilted the Mark's bar up slightly
(cheating, like Patrick says). This makes the drops really steep, like
35deg or more. Kinda funky.

Thanks for all the replies.

Re: [RBW] Noodle bars: Any upsweep on the flats?

2016-06-13 Thread Jack B
Bummer. Well thanks for the info Keith.

I just now made an adjustment that might help: I tilted the Mark's bar up
so that the flats (behind the hoods) are a better resting spot. Rode around
the block and they feel good.

The ramps are steep now, maybe too steep, but I don't ride there much.
Kinda new to drop bars so still trying to get it dialed in.

[RBW] Re: Secondary Levers and V-Brakes

2016-05-26 Thread Jack B
Wouldn't the JoeApp accept canti brakes? Then you could use road levers
with interrupters.

I really like having the cross levers on my drop bars it's reassuring to
know that you can brake in a pinch. But I find that I rarely use the rear
brake, so it seems like if the Pauls are too spendy then you could just get
the left one and use the road levers when you really need more stopping
power. I'm also surprised by how easy it is to brake "on the hoods".

[RBW] WTB/WTT: Schwalbe Little Big Bens 700C x 38

2016-05-25 Thread Jack B
I like my Little Ben tires, I have the brown ones. Would like to get a pair
in black, almost purely for aesthetic reasons.

Anyone want to trade my brown for your black, with some cash going your

Re: [RBW] Seeking advice (and WTB) front lowrider rack and panniers for canti Sam

2016-05-24 Thread Jack B
I have some black back rollers, and they're good, but I hate trying to find
anything lost in the bag. I they make a lighter interior color, then definitely
consider it!

More than once I've strewn a pile of pannier stuff on the sidewalk looking for
my keys or light. So dark in there!

[RBW] Re: Experience with mini "half clips" ?

2016-05-23 Thread Jack B
Thanks for all the replies. I ended up buying some of the MKS Cage Half
Clips, and put about 75 miles on with them over the weekend, then about 20
more miles in the city today.

On the 75mi ride (actually split up into 2 days) I wore samba-like
sneakers, and felt like I really had to lift my foot to get any upward
resistance from the cages, i.e. the shoes don't really fill the cage. But
this means that the feet are free to move around and make small changes in
position to avoid RSI. On a couple of big hills It was definitely nice to
have a little more leverage, and otherwise the clips go unnoticed.

On the 20mi ride today I wore my street shoes which are bigger, and the
clips felt more effective, but I actually got numbness in the toes towards
the end. In these shoes I wished I could move my foot forward to get closer
to my normal pedal position. (I should've listened to the advice about the
deep VO clips, maybe.)

Around town I found it annoying that the clips drag on the ground if you
forget to engage one side, e.g. after a stop light, or if you are just
walking the bike. I think I will go back to free pedaling for JRA, and
might put the clips back on for long rides. Or even better, just swap
pedals for touring, since that's an easier installation than screwing on
the clips.

Thanks for the replies.

Dan, thanks for the generous offer on the VO clips, but I think if I want
to try these then I'll just pick some up today at my LBS so that I can use
them on my weekend ride.

[RBW] Experience with mini "half clips" ?

2016-05-20 Thread Jack B
I mostly subscribe to the Riv theory about pedals, i.e. I ride flat pedals
w/ street shoes for my daily rides.

My current setup has MKS Sylvan touring pedals, which I bought with the
idea that I could add toeclips and straps for longer rides.

Well now I'm about to go on a longish ride for an s24o, and don't really
want to mess with full clips and straps, but also think it might be nice to
have some more leverage.

Anyone have success with these half-clips that MKS and VO offer?
https://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=32040

Seems like a nice compromise, but I'm also skeptical about the
effectiveness. Anyone have experience with these?

cheers,
Jack B.

I've bought a sage Sam from another RBW list member... Woohoo!

So of course I'm daydreaming about how to build it up while I await

Would love to see what color bar tape folks have used on these. I'm sure it
would look great with the gold/amber color I've used before, but wondering
what else folks have done. Anyone care to share links to their Sage Sammy

If you are using mountain brake levers (only choice, right?) then put those
on first. They will dictate how far the shift cable can run under the grip

I really like my barcons on albatross and on drops, but on a choco bar I
wonder if they'd be too close to the body? Will be interested to know what

+1 for registering on Bike Index, it totally works!

One of my time-wasting habits is to browse CL for used bikes and parts. I

It felt really great to play a small part in helping someone get their bike

Re: [RBW] Re: what bolts?

2016-03-18 Thread Jack B
The Hexlox looks promising, I might back that.

I ordered a few of the security bolts and found that it was easy to
mis-measure. I ended up with quite a few wrong lengths... seatpost clamp
was especially tricky to get right. Hexlox would solve that problem – All
you need to know is the allen bolt size.

Anyone know?

[RBW] Re: Found a 1986–87 Bridgestone T700 at the Curb This Morning, Am Puzzled

2015-08-22 Thread Jack B
Strange, I never noticed that the T700 has no eyelets on the later models.
Looks like even the RB-T is lacking them! I'm guessing that 'touring'
bikes were not fashionable in the late 80's, so B-stone could get away
without adding these features.

I might have some P-clamps in my parts bin, bought from Riv but never used,
if you are interested. Or I would think you could buy one of the Sam forks
that Riv has on their web specials page that would solve the problem up
front at least.

cheers,
Jack

 Hi there,

This morning on my commute into work (on my 1987 Bridgestone 450 I have
set up as a city bike with Bosco bars), I found a T700 (sans crank and
front wheel) at the curb. I'll have to post some images when I clean it up
but my immediate reaction was, why are there not double eyelets at the rear
dropouts, and why none midway down the fork for front racks? Why would
Bridgestone have marketed a touring bike without these basic features?
This is especially puzzling because the 1985 model of the same bike has
them, as do the touring models of subsequent years.

I just happened to be in the market for a used touring frame, so I'm
elated that I found this, but it breaks my heart that it doesn't have those
 effing eyelets!!!

Anyway, I'm excited to take a closer look while I'm cleaning it up tonight.

[RBW] Re: Yves Gomez PBH range?

2015-08-22 Thread Jack B
Thanks for the replies I went ahead and bought the frame! (I actually
posted this query a week ago, but for some reason my posts don't go up
right away.)

Yeah I ended up going with the Cheviot sizes as a guide, using same logic
as Larry, and I am hoping that without the TT there will be some
flexibility.

Bike is coming together nicely thus far; will report back if the fit seems
way off.

cheers,
Jack

[RBW] Yves Gomez PBH range?

2015-08-20 Thread Jack B
I have a line on a used 60 cm Yves Gomez frame.

Anyone know the range of PBH that would be comfy for a rider on this frame?
Hoping to build this up for my wife who is 6'-0 tall (though I don't know
her PBH offhand).

thanks,
Jack

[RBW] Re: Velo Orange 'Campeur' vs. the Clem

2015-06-18 Thread Jack B
I own the VO frame you mentioned, but only have been riding it a month or
so. It's a good bike, maybe even a great bike, but it's no Riv.

Before I knew about the Clem, I convinced myself I couldn't afford a Riv,
and bought the VO on sale in December and then built it up over the last
few months as I found deals on new used parts. Then just as I was
finishing the build, I had a chance to test ride a Sam, and man I think I
should've saved up for that bike instead! I haven't ridden a Clem, so can't
honestly compare it with the Campeur, but have to assume it still has that
Riv feel that we hear about on this group.

I have the VO set up with drop bars, after mostly riding an old Trek TX500
bike w/ Albatross bars. I have the drops raised up quite high with a
technomic stem, but it still feels like a big reach maybe that's just
because I'm used to the upright bars, but I didn't feel that way on a Sam
with drops.

I think the Clem has the VO beat on aesthetics, hands down. Better looking
fork, lugs, colors, nice looking swoop on the seat stays, just more
handsome all around. Mine is the 63cm size and it's funny to me how it
doesn't look like a tall frame... maybe that's good, but I think I'd rather
see a taller headtube and a sloping top tube, which would help get the bars
up too. I think a tall Riv (e.g. 62cm Sam) does this really well. Clem
doesn't have that size option, so maybe not a fair comparison there.

All of that said, the VO is great at a lot of things: Carries a load, no
probs with heelstrike on my panniers. All kinds of thought put into it
about racks, fenders, wheel clearance, etc. It's worth mentioning that it
is built for Canti brakes, which could be a deal-breaker for some. I think
you could swap out for centerpulls up front, but the rear would be trickier.

On Sunday, June 14, 2015 at 3:42:37 PM UTC-7, Wayne Naha wrote:

In the interest of being thorough. There was a thread comparing the Clem
to the Surly LHT. So what about this one? It seems pretty cool.
Available ion a wide range of sizes, has a pump peg, kickstand plate and a
variety of rack and fender mounts. $520 for the frame.
Clearly, Clem is going to be a bit more stout. But the Campeur is no
lightweight, with a stated weight of 28.1 pounds. I like the Clem's
dropouts and rack mounts better. Is there anyone who has ridden the VO?
Or had the chance to give a good looking over? I'd love to hear your
 thoughts.

[RBW] Re: Seeking Rack Advice

2015-06-03 Thread Jack B
Thanks so much for all the replies.
• I wouldn't have considered the Axiom due to the chain stay issue (Andrew,
mine are even 2cm longer than on the Rando), but I like the workaround. I
like the slim look of this rack for daily 1-bag use.
• Good to hear the feedback on the Tubus Evo the Nitto 20R, I like the
look of both of these racks. Evo is looking like a winner if I have the $$.
• Racktime was totally not on my radar! Might try one of these for now, and
then spring for a Nitto or Tubus when I've finally saved up for a Sam.

cheers,
Jack

 1) it is extremely well made and substantial without being heavy

 3) it has a high and low carry rail.

You have a choice of silver or black.

[RBW] Re: Visting Portland

2015-06-02 Thread Jack B
If beers are what you want, then there are some great options not far from
Rivelo, in the SE quadrant:
• Hair of the Dog is at SE Water Yamhill, maybe a mile due north of
Rivelo. Strangely I've never been, but great beers. BIG beers though, so if
you have more riding to do then be careful.
• The Commons Brewery has a new tasting room at SE 7th Belmont. Their
Belgian- and Euro-Inspired beers are a refreshing change from the hop-heavy
IPAs found elsewhere (though I love those too). Highly recommend.
• Just a few blocks East is the Cascade Barrel House (sour beers) and
Green Dragon (owned by Rogue, but with 50+ rotating taps, mostly not
Rogue). Both have good outdoor seating if weather is good.
• Head north of here for Base Camp Brewing, south for Lucky Lab, even
further south to Division St. for Apex Beer bar (actally almost due East
from Rivelo). Great outdoor seating at all three.
• If you do plan to visit Mt. Tabor then you could take the Salmon St. bike
boulevard most of the way from Central Eastside. Much nicer route than any
of the busy streets with bike lanes.
• Along the way to or from Tabor I'd suggest a stop at The Horse Brass Pub,
a real Portland institution. 50+ taps, knowledgeable staff.

Have fun!
