Re: [RBW] Re: Jobst Brandt thought experiment: What would he ride today?

2023-02-22 Thread Jeff B
As an aside to what modern bike Jobst might ride, here are some photos of
Jobst's bike at the US Bicycling Hall of Fame in Davis, CA. I'm not sure if
this was his final or second to last bike. I don't know if it is still
there and having it hanging from the ceiling makes it hard to photograph
and inspect but still very cool to see in person.

[RBW] Re: NBOD: New Bike Ordered Day! The mythical canti-Roa!

2022-04-05 Thread Jeff B
Bill,

That sounds like an awesome bike! I've been thinking that if I could get
Roadeo tubing on a frame like the Roadini with long chain stays and cant or
center pull studs that would be a perfect bike for me. All the other
options sound great too.
I look forward to seeing it built up.

Re: [RBW] Roadini heavy?

2022-01-30 Thread Jeff B

I own a Roadini that I bought from the other Joe who replied in the thread.

I wouldn't consider my Roadini heavy, for what it is. I've certainly built
lighter bikes for customers including an S-Works Utralight Tarmac, which
tipped the scale just under 13lbs. I ride a 54 Roadini at 5'11" but always
thought it would be fun to ty a 57.

The general weight of most club ride bikes (specialized tarmac, Roubaix,
venge, cervelo s & r series, etc) I've weighed come in at 16.75lbs WITHOUT
saddle bags or bottles.
Some of those riders use a saddlebag but many put their flat kit, phone,
arm warmers, etc in their jersey pocket. I think of it though that I'm
riding the horse so why should the lumber be on my back so, I use a Swift
Industries handlebar bag which can carry ample supplies.
My Roadini comes in at 25lbs with 2 tubes, a multi-tool, tire lever & mini
pump. I routinely carry my wallet & phone in there too along with house/car
keys, sunglasses, snacks and anything else that might be helpful on a ride.

Like Johnny said, you can make a bike feel pretty light with a good wheel
set and ironically the club riders who add aero wheels to their bike end up
adding an extra few pounds because there is simply more material there. I
just use excellent aluminum wheels (HED Belgium with DT Swiss 240 hubs) to
keep the weight down and keep the bike feeling spry. I am also geared down
compared to most road bikes.

My 11 speed setup is a 14-30 cassette with 44/28 chainrings. This gives me
a low gear inch of 25.5 and a high of 86.1 on 35mm tires. This came to be
from watching people's cassettes who's gearing was the standard 11-28,
50/34. They were always in the 50 tooth chainring but cross chained up in
the19 or 21 tooth in the rear so they could spin the cadence fast enough. I
find that my gearing allows me to spin pretty fast on the Roadini, which
makes the bike feel lively to me. I've never needed the 100+ gear inches
that usually comes with the standard 11 speed road bike set up but a do
really appreciate having a .933:1 (sub1:1) gear ratio for climbing so again
I can spin seated up a hill while most are grinding away out of the saddle
at 10 rpm.

Like Karl said, I've also hit close to 50mph on a decent to Estes Park CO
and the bike felt so stable it's miraculous. Some of the other guys,
especially the one riding a Venge with aero wheels, were getting blown all
over the road because the tall profile carbon frame & wheels were like a
sail catching the wind. Maybe because the Roadini had more weight it was
more planted and glued to the road so I was able to concentrate on the ride
& not fighting the bike to stay straight. I found the steering to be really
easy on that ride too.

To me it really is about having a bike that offers so much more from the
normal club racer. The geometry, sloping top tube, ability for wide tires,
quill stem to adjust handlebar height throughout the day without silly
steer tube extenders, braze ons for simple racks, ability to run multiple
gear configurations (sti or downtube shifters), larger tire ability
(Largest I've used is 38mm) and a bike that will last forever means I
probably won't get rid of this frame for a long time. However, I'm nt sure
I'd get the latest batch with the longer reach calipers. A few people I
know with those longer calipers say they lack the power needed & I think
there have been a few instances in BQ where Jan found them substandard. I
have no experience with them though so I cannot confirm.

If I did want to expand on my Roadini though and get something lighter, I
would look at David Kirk. He built himself, what he calls, a Montana Road
Bike which is probably closer to a Roadeo in terms of geo and non threaded
steer but his craftsmanship is beautiful & I'm sure it weighs loads less
being made from stainless tubes fillet brazed. He has an instagram post
from Dec 3, 2021 about that bike which really sums up what I think a road
bike should be.

And lastly, If you are looking for Roadini inspiration with alternate bars,
just google image search for "bluelug roadini". There will be a few photos
of them with albatross, mustache and even chocomoose bars.

[RBW] Re: Roadini Tires: Anyone running 38s?

2021-06-17 Thread Jeff B
Rivendell did state that the 2020 had more clearance. Mine is the 1st
generation but will still fit 38mm tires.
I meant that I need to instal the tire deflated to get it past the brake
shoes even with the caliper open.
Also, some orange frames from the 1st batch apparently had the brake bridge
welded too high which allowed bigger tires but almost made it so you would
have to use a long reach caliper instead of a standard.

Some items for sale. Buyer will cover the PayPal fees and shipping. Most of
the small items should be able to fit in USPS flat rate packaging which
starts at $8ish I believe for an envelope. I will probably add more items
later too. Thanks for looking and contact me off list please (private
message).
Photos here: RBW For Sale

*BRAKES*
-*Avid Shorty 6 Canitlevers $40*, KoolStop pads have good amount of life
left in them. Will come with regular mounting hardware (not rack bolts)
stadle cable and hanger.

*-Tektro 521A FRONT $20*, single caliper, 47-57mm reach, no pads, recessed
nut.

-*Short Pull brake lever set $10*, No barrel adjuster on the lever because
you would have one on your road caliper or at a housing stop for
cantilevers. One reach adjust screw missing.

-*Long Pull brake levers $10*, polished

-*Long Pull brake levers $10*, black (no Photos in album can get you some)

-*Interrupter levers $10*

*Drivetrain*

-*Shimano 105 RD-1056 $15* pretty scratched up but works great. Pulleys are
newer. I do not have the original cable anchor nut (which was an M5 Allen)
so I got a washer and corresponding M5 nut that do the job of securing the
cable.

*-Sunrace R80 8spd Front Derailleur $15* double chainring, 56-50 large ring
with 16t capacity. Band mounting for 31.8 but has a shim for 28.6

scratched up but I don't think they have any problem gouges. Rings look
pretty beat but I never had a chain skip, could probably stand to be
replaced. 130BCD.

That looks like an excellent ride! At least on a bike like the Atlantis you are

I'm wanting to do the same on my Atlantis or vintage stumpjumer. Is it possible

2020-07-19 Thread Jeff B
Not to talk off the topic of chain lubing but, Patrick your rear derailleur
cable is wrapped under the kickstand plate. Not sure if it makes any
difference to you but it could lead to the cable breaking prematurely or
the rear Der being perpetually out of adjustment. Is there room for the
cable to ride smoothly next to the plate or is a that a GUS quirk?

2020-07-19 Thread Jeff B
As I live in Davis, I should have brought my Quickbeam out and rode about a
1/4 mile behind you HA!

It is a nice ride out to Winters but can get boring sometimes so I've
experimented with some creative routes through farm field access roads. So
far no problems but luck can only take you so far.

Your bike looks great too.

I had been eyeing this as well. Decided against it because 59 was a touch too

up the surrounding paint & the bike just looks too good already.

[RBW] Re: What shade of orange?

2020-06-26 Thread Jeff B
I'm not a painting expert but have listened to many conversations about
automotive paint matching.

I believe the true final color would also depend on your, or your painters,
primer of choice. A grey primer will probably be closest to the true color,
but slightly muted and might require a few coats for good coverage. To
really have the paint pop and not use so many coats you could use white
primer.

PPG 2764 (which is Flame Red as described by Corvette marketing) paired
with a white primer can produce a really vivid color without having to buy
a brighter orange which might be leaning towards a highlighter shade.

[RBW] Re: Tubulars on Rivendells

2020-04-25 Thread Jeff B
I was actually contemplating the same thing for my Roadini since Rene Herse
is selling FMBs now.

A few years ago my Specialized representative was trying so hard to unload
a set of CLX60 tubular wheels with tires mounted already and I should have
bought them for price he was going for, it was amazingly low but I couldn't
be bothered because my tubeless set up was going great, and still is.

I still might toy with the idea, especially using some older MAVICs like
you Bill.

Specialized still has stock of the S-Works Turbo Cotton Hell of the North
(Paris-Roubaix) tire that is listed as a 28mm (they might have had a 30mm
at some point).

Either way your bike looks great!

[RBW] Re: 1x11 on a Roadini?

2019-11-27 Thread Jeff B
I have a Specialized Sequoia with 1x11 but my Roadini is 2x11.

My Roadini has a gear inch spread of 29.1" to 114" on 700/32 with a 46/30 &
11/28.

The Sequoia has a gear inch spread of 26.9" to 103" on 650B/47 with a 42 &
11/42.

They both use SRAM Force and feel great. I really dig the simplicity of 1x
but find myself using only a small section of the cassette, which might
promote accelerated wear. I never really spin out though and always can
climb hills if needed. I really never use the 46/11 on my Roadini unless
I'm really going downhill so I find that the spread is a little more
useable on the Sequoia. with a 42t chainring. I don't mind the gaps in the
cassette either, you use your legs more to power through small hills and
spend less time shifting. For centuries and light rondo it would be perfect.

If you wanted to play around and can get to Walnut Creek, Harry's Roadini
has SRAM Force 1x on it, although the bike is quite large (57 or 61)

[RBW] Re: Advice Sought on Hubs and Rim Choice

2019-10-09 Thread Jeff B
For what it's worth, I always value ease of service and parts availability
with my hubs. All the hubs listed fit that category for simple maintenance,
especially the sealed bearing ones such as the Phil, Chris & White. The
bearings are readily available & most are a 6902. I think the Chris King
hubs require special tools for bearing replacement although you can always
tap the bearing out with punch and make your own press. Working in a shop
for 10+ years, I have seen a few White hubs that refused to stay adjusted
and would become loose after a few rides so they required constant
attention. That being said, I've never owned a set. My nice hubs are DT
Swiss 240's and they have always been maintenance free. Only hiccup with
those is that you may ned a ring gear tool to remove the ring gear for
bearing replacement.
Shimano hubs have loose bearings, no matter how nice, so if you know how to
clean, re-pack & adjust loose bearing hubs those can provide many years of
service.
The boutique hubs may have better/ quicker engagement of the freehub body,
but don't get too hung up on that

I do not have experience with Atlas rims but an eyeleted rim is always a
very good choice so I'd say you would have no issues.

It really comes down to how much you want to spend. I think Atlas rims with
brass nipples, butted 2/1.8/2 spokes and higher lever Shimano hubs would be
pretty bomb proof. Enjoy your building!

[RBW] Simple0ne enjoyment

2019-08-16 Thread Jeff B
I bought a Simple0ne from a RBWOB member a while ago because my friend had
a single speed with chubby tires and convinced me I should do the same.
Funny enough he sold his this week, right after I got my bike already to
go. When I got the bike I was not really in love with it. Something just
felt odd. Maybe I was not used to the simplicity and quietness of single
speeding. But now I have the bike dialed in and I could not be any happier.
I swapped the noodle drop bars for mustache bars (which is such an easy
swap on single speeds), changed to a rack that mounts to the fork braze-on,
instead of the canti bosses (that rack is on my Atlantis which is old
enough to not have fork braze-ons) and finally I mounted some huge
GravelKings SK's to cushion the ride. The tires feel awesome and look so
ballon like mounted to the small Velocity A23 rims, which is what made me
fall in love with the aesthetic of this bike. I use it frequently as a
commuter and after work quick gravel grinder. Maybe I'll go fixed later.
Maybe I'll put a lowrider rack on it and use it as a simple camper bike.
Who knows, it's just fun for now and it looks even better dusty so I'll
keep riding it hard.
