[RBW] Re: 5 Boro Bike Tour (was NYC Riv Ride?)

2024-01-11 Thread Joe in the Pay Area
Andy, Enjoy The Ride !!! You're about to experience one of the greatest
cities in the world by pedaling it !!! Forget all the blather about this
tire and that chainring and just be a kid again, on a bike, with lots of
other bikes, and enjoy it. Go. Out. For. A. Ride. ("Mom? I'm goin' out on
my bike.") Maybe even put a baseball card in your spokes to make some
noise. Maybe some streamers too?

I have ridden it many, many times, going way back when it was orange vests
from AYH, the ride's founder and sole sponsor (until some bank had to get
involved). ("AYH" = American Youth Hostels, a great bike store in its own
right, and a go-to outdoor outfitter. R.I.P. AYH.) You'll be on roads that
normally won't allow you to enjoy the views you'll now be Inside Of! The
only time you can stop On Top Of The Verrazano Narrows Bridge is if a car
accident has stopped traffic, so how lucky are you that the span has been
closed Just For You?!

It's a *ride*, Andy. There'll be skinny tire flyers there and also bikes
that have last seen daylight during the Truman Administration. But you,
Andy, you'll be exactly what you are, a tourist, a Cycling Tourist, with a
familiar bike under you and thousands of fellow pedalers surrounding you,
so sit back, find a cadence that allows you to see it all, and Enjoy The
Ride, kid.

(And if you need a baseball card and a clothespin, lemme know. Alas...I'm
all out of streamers.)

(And do your homework. If you spend a week in da Big Apple and don't eat
pizza at least 5 times, you've missed out.)

So one thing I’ve noticed - I mean REALLY noticed - about our Rivendell
bikes is that they get compliments.

I ride the Silver Comet near Atlanta.
 https://groups.google.com/g/bicycletouring/c/cFpcvUWqzkA
For 15 years I rode a Diamondback Approach, a decent hybrid bike (as
they called those back in the ’90s). I never heard a word from fellow
 riders.
Then in 2015 I got a Sam Hillborne. Bog standard, as the Brits say -
Sage Blue, cork grips. I added some fenders and started seriously hitting
 the trail for exercise.

Suddenly folks are pulling up next to me (or going past), and saying
“Nice bike!” Now I’m 74 and banging along at about 11 mph, so it’s not
tough to pull up next to me. But this happens 2 - 3 times a year. It
 surprises me.

A couple of nice ladies went on about the friction shifters and “a hard
leather seat. He’s hard core!”, before riding off on their carbon
Cannondales. A nice gentleman commented at length on the cork grips.
Maybe he was a fly fisherman?

It happened again yesterday when I stopped for water. Two guys also
stopped and were very complimentary about the Sam. One asked to ride it
(sure!) and came back grinning (“If I didn’t already have too many bikes…”)
It surprised my wife, too. I built her up a Platypus last winter, and
on her second ride she got a “Nice bike!” from someone. She came home
 with
 smiles.

Does this happen to you when you ride your Rivendell? Tell us about
 the compliments you get.

[RBW] Atlantis and Sequoias for sale

2021-08-13 Thread Joe in the Pay Area
I'm the friend that Rich Lesnik has posted about a lot of bikes that need
to be "cleared out" and sold. Please respond to me off-group and I'll get
back to you as best I can.

The seapuke green Atlantis is nominally a 60cm, complete except for brakes.
I have a n-o-s 60cm Sequoia (there were no '61' cm Sequoias), a 3Rensho
frameset and 2 62cm Sequoias, one a sorta n-o-s. The second 62 Sequoia is
mostly complete but in "rough shape," nothing a good cleaning and tune-up
wouldn't solve (but if you're looking for a candidate as a museum piece,
this ain't it).

Other bikes being considered for "gone" are a DeRosa, a Masi, a '93 XO-1
and several Expeditions, mostly 60s but also a 49 and a 54. To say the
least, it's a helluva fleet. Also an '85 Trek 720 (maroon), an almost n-o-s
'85 Trek 620 ( a beautiful sparkly deep blue), and a n-o-s Miyata 1000 (the
"sort-of gray-green color, with Deerheads).

I ride a 60cm 1984 Expedition and a 1980 Trek 738, so unless noted, that's
the size they are.

[RBW] FS - Phil "CHP" pedals / 47cm and 54cm 1984 Expeditions

2021-02-26 Thread Joe in the Pay Area
I have a pair of working Phil Wood platform "CHP" pedals for sale. $120,
which does not include s No issues with them except me loving my
Specialized Touring pedals more.

Also for sale are 2 1984 Specialized Expeditions, 47 and 54cm. Downtube
shifter braze-ons = the 1984 model year.

In very, very good shape (otherwise I would not have bought them). I'm
thinking ~ $350 / bike, which would be just the frame, fork, stem and
handlebars. If you would like more of the original equipment...well... let
the haggling' begin. I bought these for parts to maintain my 60cm '84 as
close to original as possible, so if you want some of the "goodies," we
need to talk.

Lugged steel frames, relaxed touring geometries, plenty of room for 700x35
Paselas and fenders...sort of "Rivendell before Rivendell..." If I had to
choose between my '84 Expedition and my orange Atlantis, I'd have a
conundrum on my hands.

Downhills and tailwinds to y'all.

[RBW] Atlantis differences

2020-11-30 Thread Joe in the Pay Area
Having cawfee with Rich this morning, he of R'dell wheel building fame, I
found out the difference between my 2 Atlantis's. (Yeah, yeah, I
know...it's hard to bitch when you have a loaf of bread under each arm...)

So, Atlantises made by Toyo have chainstays that flare Out at the
drop-outs, whereas the Taiwan and Waterford chainstays are straight from
their bend out of the bottom bracket. The presence of a plate between the
chainstays for a generator or kickstand doesn't help identifying the
constructor.

Hope it helps. Btw, share the bread...we're all in this together.

[RBW] Re: Riv. Camping trip, NYC, seeking route advice

2020-09-16 Thread Joe in the Pay Area
I'd take the LIRR east and 'do' the North Fork and stay in Greenport's KOA.
There's a ferry over to...uhm...Shelter Island?... and then you could go on
to the South Fork and head out to the lighthouse and/or Montauktown
(goo--ooo-oood seafood!), and pass the Big Duck on your way back. Traffic
should be minimal because "the season" is over. Sunburn would be your only
problem and the waters should still be warm enough to stop and skinnydip.
