[RBW] Fall Ride Recommendations outside NYC?

2019-10-21 Thread John W
Old Croton Aqueduct Trail
North and South County Trail

If you don’t mind road riding there is plenty of low trafficked roads north of,
say, Katonah and beyond on the Metro North train.

For a longer trip, take the train to Poughkeepsie and ride into New Paltz. A
few people on this group recently did Minnewaska, which is wonderful.

Google “Summer Classic” in ridewithgps for another bike route.

Or take the train to Wassaic and ride into Connecticut or Massachusetts. You
can’t really go wrong.

[RBW] Recommend a film camera

2019-08-16 Thread John W
Almost all autofocus SLR camera / lens systems will allow you to focus
manually.

If you want the manual feel, but with good auto exposure capabilities, search
for a used Nikon FM3A. It was the last of its type ever made by Nikon and as
such you’re still able to find ones in mint / NOS condition. It’s also one of
my personal favorites.

If your budget is lower, search for a used Nikon F3HP, arguably the best pro
camera ever made. It is still the benchmark for viewfinder quality if you wear
eyeglasses.

[RBW] What's the latest in 700c fenders? Planet Bike Cascadia ALX (50mm), PDW Full Metal (45mm) on a Rambouillet?

2019-08-07 Thread John W
Seeking reviews — anyone by chance use these fenders on their Rambouillet?
I'm looking for pre-drilled, relatively easy-to-install fenders with
included mudflaps, and these fit the bill.

Planet Bike Cascadia ALX (50mm)
https://www.planetbike.com/store/alx-cascadia-config-black-aluminum-bike-fenders-700c-wide-50mm.html

Portland Design Works Full Metal (45mm)
https://ridepdw.com/products/full-metal-fenders-city-size?variant=14871301488697

The 28mm Continental GP4000sii tires I usually run measure an actual
30-31mm, so I'd like to continue using them without any worry about
clearance once fall and winter arrive.

[RBW] Winter wool baselayer rec needed

2018-11-10 Thread John W
Smartwool 250 weight could fit the bill. Their tops tend to be loose, so if in
doubt size down as a base layer.

I could never go a week between washings with merino base layers. It’s stinks
just as much as anything else would. I hop into the shower with my base layer
on, rinse and hang dry, and do a proper detergent wash about once a week or so.
Which is to say: wool might not be the cure-all you’re seeking.

[RBW] Re: Hanging edeluxe from fork crown mount possible?

2018-06-04 Thread John W
It'll depend on the size of your headset and the type of brakes you're
using.

I used a B mount that way once, when I had side pull caliper brakes. It
worked but it was much less than optimal. I had to bend the arms to clear
the bottom of the headset and the top of the TRP957 brakes. I'd guess the
cantilevers or center pull brakes would've made this slightly easier.

You'll find some helpful information here:

[RBW] What frame and build set make you a safer, slower rider?

2018-06-02 Thread John W
Good points. I definitely think it’s intentional. But sometimes the tool puts
you in the... right intention?

When I play guitar, I have an instrument with light gauge strings set close to
the fretboard on a relatively short scale neck. It inspires me to improvise
lines and play with large note intervals. Another instrument has higher action
and thicker gauge strings. I comp chords on it and like to play fingerstyle.
Horses for courses I think can also apply to city riding.

As for drivers and city infrastructure changing to fit my needs— well, now that
is a faulty premise if I ever heard one.

[RBW] What frame and build set make you a safer, slower rider?

2018-06-02 Thread John W
I’ve been thinking a lot about safety, and about what it means to “underbike”
in the city, in the name of keeping oneself purposely at lower-than-average
speeds and maximally visible to pedestrians and cars.

Naturally, most of this is in the hands of the cyclist. The best safety is
defensive cycling.

That said, as I consider a Riv purchase within the next year, I’m centering my
decision of the frame and build kit around what would make for an enjoyable
cycling experience in the city while also reinforcing the thought of, “Hey:
slow down, be seen, be slow. Ride your bike, but don’t be a cyclist.”

Yes, this is an indulgence. But if anyone who overthought this as much as I’m
doing, I’d welcome suggestions or thoughts of what worked for you. I’m ruling
out single speeds due to cranky knees. But gearing and handlebar choices are in
play. So, too are frames. I’m thinking either a Sam or Atlantis might fit the
bill.

I know I could strap a cinderblock to my bike. That sure would slow me down.
But this is all about creating a fun bike that’s purpose built for this task.

[RBW] Re: Informal poll: Sam Hillborne sizing, 6' tall about an 85PBH?

2018-02-16 Thread John W
Thank you everyone for your very patient advice. I've concluded that a
current 55 or even better, a 56 with the 57.5 TT, is the way to go for me.
Basically, what Riv recommends!

[RBW] Re: Informal poll: Sam Hillborne sizing, 6' tall about an 85PBH?

2018-02-16 Thread John W
My PBH is 85.

The geo chart can be found here:
https://www.rivbike.com/pages/geometry

The reach seems significantly shorter and the stack significantly higher than
I’d expect, even having ridden similar compact frames like the Vaya and Awol.

I’m not saying the number are wrong, but head scratching to someone like me who
has never ridden a Riv “expanded” geo frame. Hence my poll.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Anyone have a photo of their 56cm Sam
(59cm TT) with a saddle height in my neighborhood?

[RBW] Re: Informal poll: Sam Hillborne sizing, 6' tall about an 85PBH?

2018-02-16 Thread John W
To clarify, I don’t mean to say that the stack is wrong, just a bit higher than
I’d expect, even with an upslope. This is going on past experience with compact
frames, and having ridden others’ off the peg frames like the Awol and Vaya.

https://www.rivbike.com/pages/geometry

The stack (vertical height from center of bottom bracket to top
tube/headtubeintersection) is 64.5cm on a size 58 frame.

My PBH is 85. With shoes on I can comfortably ride my 56cm Disc Trucker, which
has an 85cm standover with 50mm Marathons.

[RBW] Informal poll: Sam Hillborne sizing, 6' tall about an 85PBH?

2018-02-15 Thread John W
Hello folks,

I'm reaching out for some input regarding current Sam Hillbornes.

I'm 6' tall with an 85PBH (say, 86.25 PBH with shoes.) Saddle height ~75cm,
a Brooks B17 which runs about 6cm tall.

Riv recommends a size 55 frame, but I know I could ride a 58. I'll ride on
pavement and trails. Less so, gnarly track. And I'll set up drop bars about
1cm lower than my saddle.

My concerns are:

— will I have enough exposed stem above the headset and cable hanger in
front?
— will the bike handle oddly with just ~2cm of exposed stem?
— am I setting myself up for the inability to use taller upright bars in
the future?

I cribbed this photo from a fellow with a shorter saddle height than me:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/37347002@N05/4354827488/in/pool-hillborne/

The 55 is the safe bet, while the 58 looks doable.

I'm cautious of getting a bike that's too small for me. Generally speaking,
I'm a 56cm on Surly road frames and I don't feel stretched out on them.

What say you? 55 or 58?

Separately, looking at the geo charts on Riv's site, the Stack and Reach
measurements on the Sam Hillbornes look off to me, but perhaps I'm not
correctly parsing the effect of the 71.5 STA.

Apologies for the naval gazing email. Any input would be appreciated.

John in NYC

[RBW] ISO cantilever Sam Hillborne 55/56cm

Shaking the tree. I've been having trouble finding a Riv in my size. I'm
now looking for a Sam 55/56cm frameset or a full build. Please hit me up if
you have something that you're selling.

[RBW] wtb 55 frame or complete

2018-02-03 Thread John W
I’m not the OP, but this is where I think potential new Riv riders like myself
get confused. “Well, you’re a 53 in x frames. A 55 in Y. You’d be a 57 in Z but
you could also do a 59.” *Runs to geo chart*.

MountNormal, I’m curious — how does that 56 fit with its 61cm effective top
tube? What sorts of bars are you running with it?

[RBW] Test ride 58cm Atlantis or Hunqapillar in New York City?

2018-01-21 Thread John W
Thanks Michael. I’m actually looking specifically to test ride the Atlantis (or
Hunq) to test the frame and fit qualities. I’d be a 58 in the Atlantis or
maybe an equivalent 53 in the Hunq for starters.

[RBW] Test ride 58cm Atlantis or Hunqapillar in New York City?

2018-01-20 Thread John W
Leaning toward the Atlantis, but Hunq curious, too. I'm 6' tall, mostly
torso, and I think a 58cm is a good compromise for a test ride.

If anyone has one I'll bring along coffee or beer in return for a couple of
laps in the park.

[RBW] Re: Light but strong wheels for a Sam or ???

2018-01-18 Thread John W
I like my Pacenti Brevet rims. Light enough for me. Great braking surface,
fairly easy to mount tires. (I use a long throw Lezyne pump but always keep a
CO2 cartridge with me just in case.) And one day I’ll try out tubeless and
these rims will work for that.

[RBW] .... or a 56cm Atlantis (was: Long shot WTB: 53cm Hunqapillar)

2018-01-13 Thread John W
I'm attempting coax that Hunq demo out of Riv's hands.

I've also decided to search for a 56cm Atlantis, if that speaks to anyone.

I purchased a new car-substitute / everyday bike last year, a Disc Trucker,
and I have buyer's remorse. It's a fine ride but it turns out that I pedal
through turns much more than I thought at city speeds, and the toe overlap
bothers me. I've also come to realize that I don't particularly like
mechanical disc brakes. Live and learn.

Re: [RBW] Roadini as commuter?

2018-01-10 Thread John W
I've long used a Carradice Super C with an SQR quick release. It has an
ample ~20L capacity and I use all of the space. (You need slightly more
than a fistful of seatpost for the SQR clamp.) I've done this with a
variety of bikes including ones that wouldn't fall into the typical
"commuter" species and its worked just fine. Just another consideration.

2017-12-31 Thread John W
Thanks everyone. And I didn’t know that Riv used C-to-Too numbers. That
actually makes a lot of things make more sense to me.

I’ve always been a little stand over averse, which doesn’t quite work for
someone who is mostly torso.

I’ll give the shop a call after the holiday.

[RBW] A Homer Hilsen, between 57 and 59: how to decide?

2017-12-30 Thread John W
Happy holidays, everyone.

I’m currently seriously considering putting myself on the queue list for an
AHH, although who knows how long i’ll be waiting. I would benefit greatly from
some sizing advice.

I’m 182cm tall, with a 85 PBH and about a 74cm saddle height for most bikes. I
intend to run drop bars about dead level with the saddle.

Should I go with a 57 or 59cm, or another size that I’m not considering? I have
a slight preference for running 700c tires.

[RBW] Re: "Winter" clothing help

2017-12-08 Thread John W
To add to the suggestions, I'm a fan of the Patagonia Houdini jacket and
pants. What they lack in features (few pockets, no pitzips, single action
zipper, etc) they make up for in packability and price. I wear the jacket
alone, or over a vest if I need extra protection. I keep them rolled up in
my commuting bag and virtually no space or weight penalty, and it gives me
peace of mind to know that I always have an extra "go to" layer if I need
it.
