I am sure all the MUSA/Tai/and Toyos are equal value in quality of build. Just the economies of their markets price them differently. I think RBW has always said that the build quality is the same. Paint may be another issue. My 2013blueSamTaiborne paint looked just as good as my MusaRoadeo paint. TaiBleriots a notch down on the lug/windows detailing and easy shifter cable housing paint rub-off on the fork crown shoulders (down to bare metal on one side). ToyoRambouillet paint prettiest but paint coming off now in areas. All about the same miles and care as far as I can tell. RE: [RBW] Re: FS: 56cm Blue Rambouillet "complete"
I would give my feelings on my 700c Ram but don’t know how different an animal a 26” wheel Ram is. Just from looking, there are massive geo frame diffs. Look at the HT discussed earlier. Look at how far back the rear wheel/tire is from the ST on the 52. Looks almost like a longboard bike. But if they do ride like a 700c Ram I would not hesitate to buy if that is what you want. Other 52 owners can review theirs. As far as looks - Prettiest Rivbike model ever made. Just look at that head badge, unique blue paint, traditional frame shape, and pretty fork and lugs. Awesome decals. No American soundslikeinsidejoke names. No current “font” typeset looking decals like current models. Rams have nice artistic writing and decals that Rivbikes had yesteryear like Salukis and Bleriots did. Ram Rear drop outs are elegant. Probly the zippiest Rivbike besides Legolas and Roadeo. I would buy a Ram over ANY Musa/toyo/taiwan Hilsen anyday. [RBW] Re: Fishnet longjohn/ boiled wool/ ventile system details
P'burgh winters are probably way worse than here in MD. Here in MD I get away with: 2 wool layers and J jacket or 4-5 layers of wool and no jacket. Couple hats. 2 layers of tights (one Ibex wool, one Boure windstopper type) or pair up some heavyweight wool long johns and MUSA long pants. 2 layers of sox and sneakers. Various non-cycling gloves. Sweating is not an issue with the 4-5 layers of wool/no jacket combo. Sort of a trade off not feeling the wind cut with the jacket, but then I sweaty shoulders. Even with it being vented and breathable. One thing is my thighs and shoulders complain if I am out too long. I guess they take the brunt of the wintry blasts. I guess one of those ventile jackets would be heavy enough to protect better from the wind and still breathe. Not sure what to do about thighs. Rain legs might work but again - the sweat issue. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Is this PV-8 hub noise normal?
Interesting, because on the recent wheel installation I gave the pitlock skewer 1/4 turn less than normal since I noticed my front DO getting bent looking a little. Thought I must be overdoing the skewer tightness. I will re-snug and see if that quiets it down. Re: [RBW] Leo Roadini on Brevet--SFR Del Puerto Canyon 200k ride report
Bill: You totally misunderstood what I typed. I wasn’t saying you would have the handling of a Rodini. I was not suggesting that you buy a custom. I was not even talking to you. I was just throwing the idea out there that a person can also have those benchmarks mentioned while also having a 646 bike. Sorry for the confusion. I am not a good writer. I have sold my Sam and two Bleriots. They were great bikes but when I decide not to commute because I am bummed out by the hills it’s time to look for something that rides better for me. Now I don’t fear the hills. Now recovery is quicker, enabling me to commute more days per week and have more fun. More efficient bike= less energy spent= quicker recovery from less exhaustion. The rodeo does that for me. But that is what I’m looking for in a bike. Everyone here has something they’re looking for in a bike and the cool thing is that Rivendell makes so many models just about everybody can find something that works for them. I think every bike they make are equally good, just different. PS- I’m keeping my 858 Ram! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread
I am 147lbs and 5'8" For me a noticeable diff between Bleriot/Sam, then a step up in ease of pedalling to Ram, then a dramatic step up to Roadeo. I can also confirm the diffs in mph and cog diffs in familiar terrain. Higher toothcounts front and back on Roadeo and getting up hills easier than with the other bikes. Though I am not obsessed with speed, but want a bike that moves easily as I pedal along and doesn't bog down on hills and make me feel like I am fighting the bike. I am guessing the diff is in frame tubing because the Roadeo is definitely the more efficient bike, even with very similar Rivish build. Maybe chainstay length, too. Toshi is about same size as me and we ride same frame sizes. Perhaps our diffs are in fit measurements. Also, Toshi is a power Randonneur, so he can probably blast any bike down the road with ease. Where I am a weak rider and maybe can feel the diffs. I remember that BQ stated the most dramatic diffs felt in their tires are felt by weak/slow riders. Maybe the same for tubing diffs. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: About a crash a Riv could have prevented
My wife went over the bars with the cheapy v brakes and cheapy levers on her Raleigh Detour. She did not get hurt. But upon me test riding right after the rear derailer got wrapped up in the spokes. Once she was passing over perpendicular to an 8 inch wide x 20 foot fissure in the road about two inches deep and crashed. Again, unharmed. I am guessing somehow her 35mm front tire got hung up in the split in the road and stopped the bike. Once I got my pedal touched on a curb and endoed on my Giant Defy bike. Once my 23mm tire on same got caught in sidewalk mold line and crashed. Once went off MUP, and crashed upon front wheel not making it back up blacktop at 45 degree angle. Was new rider in all three instances. Got hit by car on my Bleriot. I praise God that me and wife not injured in these crashes. [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread
Grant will gladly discuss these issues with you, based on my experience asking him about TAIHomer vs. Roadini vs. MUSARoadeo. I was researching this all in depth for my latest purchase. I wanted the lightest tubing set they make because I knew the usual Riv 8/5/8 frames fight against me on hills. Needed something that cooperates better for me. I just can't power an 8/5/8. He understood that TaiHomer and Roadini might not be what I am looking for. The Roadeo is made specifically for road riding and not for touring/commuting/off road. But I use it for all road riding, includung commuting, because I carry small loads on the saddle bag and 6/4/6 works better for me. Easier to get up hills. Noticeably. I think the Legolas and MUSARoadeo are the thinnest tubing specs they ever made on production bikes and they still make the mUSA Roadeo in regular production for now. Legolas as a custom I think. So for me, it was about getting a frame that just makes it easier to pedal along.. The only thing I give up is the ability to use 42mm tires. But it works great with 32mm tires and I am happy with that size. Cannot do fenders unless I use 28mm tires. Of course, 42 with fenders would be great, but then I would have to be on an 8/5/8 Rivbike, which I already know, after owning 4 of them, that it would not be worth the hardship getting up hills and fighting the bike. The 32mm is fine for me on the Roadeo. The 28mm with fenders on the Rambouillet as foul weather bike is fine. I can always go back to 650b x 42 on the Ram if I want the wider tires and the conversion works perfect on the Ram. Would not work good on Roadeo because fendering a Roadeo would be harder to do as the chainstay bridge is really far from where the fender would have to engage it. So, with these not being one size fits all bikes, you have to think about what is the most important for you and be willing to compromise on the rest or have a second bike to fulfill your other wishes. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread
Roadini specs from RBW: Roadini: “0.9 x 0.7 TT and the length is cut from the butt (0.9) end. So you get the 0.9 up at the front, where top tubes buckle. The 0.7 is on the thick side for a belly (though it's the same as old Columbus SP, which was 1.0 x 0.7 x 1.0--as a historical reference). The 0.7 seat-post end is light. But that's the least stressed portion on a top tube. We use the same tube on our heavier bikes, but they're not "chopped from the butt." Weight difference is minimal. DT is a tapered tube--31.8 x 1.1 at the head tube, to 28.6 x 0.8 at the bottom bracket. It's another "chopped from the butt" tube, to minimize the 1.1 length, but still giving it a lot of buckle-resistance. You might wonder why a tapered tube here, and why not fatten it at the BB? (Like Serotta's old "Colorado Concept" tubes were.) Well...almost all of the tilting/fatigue stress down there at the crank is localized on the base of the seat tube. I've seen 30 bikes (not all ours, thanks...) break there, and zero break at the downtube. Strain gauge stess analysis reveals that the stress is light on the down tube, heavy on the seat tube. That's why, on our TIG'd bikes, the seat tube is 1.1 there, and ovalized laterally to 34.9 x 28.6.” -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
