Re: [RBW] Re: Loaded touring weight distribution

What are you using to support the panniers? I currently don't have a low
rack up front and am looking at options.

I'm now considering if I should build my trip around the Wisconsin Sheep &
Wool festival in Jefferson County. It's probably a good thing that I'm on
an Atlantis and not a Rambouillet or Chevoit. The knitters and spinners
would never leave me be!

[RBW] Loaded touring weight distribution

2022-05-09 Thread Lynn Haas
How do y'all prefer to distribute weight on your Rivendells for stability?

I'm planning my first self-supported tour on my MUSA Atlantis. Health
permitting I'll be riding from my home in Iowa up to Door County WI in
September. I enjoy camping, so I'll be packing my hammock and all that.

In the past I've toured on a Surly LHT. I found that I liked half or more
of the weight up front, with panniers on a lowrider rack (Tubus Tara) and
handlebar bag, then a few things strapped across the rear rack. Loaded up
that way, the bike felt super secure and stable. I'm going to have to make
equipment changes to do that on the Atlantis, so I want to ask the hive
mind about it before I excavate for my tools and start tinkering.

Also, anyone have experience taking a loaded bike on Metra in Chicago? I
think I want to catch the train from Joliet to La Salle Station, get a
fancy hotel, and do some shopping.

Lastly (if you're still reading) who's in Eastern Iowa and wants to go for
a ride sometime? I've got a few miles to log between now and September!

[RBW] Re: I'm a New Bike Commuter

2022-02-05 Thread Lynn Haas
Rack and panniers. You want a pannier that is easy to remove and carry
around for when you stop to run an errand on your way home. Double check to
make sure your chosen panniers are compatible with the rack; Tubus and
Nitto racks have larger diameter tubing and not all panniers will fit. Get
a decent lock and watch some YouTube videos to learn good technique. Even
if you park inside during the day, if you ever need to stop anywhere on the
way to or from your destination, you will need a lock.

Congratulations on the new commute!

Re: [RBW] Re: Favorite 26" tires

There are no better reasons :)

I went to the LBS and they are ordering in some RH tires. It’s only three
blocks to the shop, but I have some mobility problems and rode instead of
(painfully) walking. It was 10 degree today so that was a bit of an adventure.
It was so very nice to get outside and feel the bike come alive. And that
concludes my ride report.

[RBW] Favorite 26" tires

2022-02-02 Thread Lynn Haas
I moved to Iowa this year, and am experiencing my first Iowa winter. I
never expected to spend this much time on a trainer. I even signed up for
Zwift. Why is there a bike path inside a volcano?

Anyway, my Panaracer Paselas have a weird spot where the casing joins that
goes thunk-thunk-thunk on the rollers. It's driving me nuts. I don't want
to put a trainer tire on the bike. I want to believe that I'm going to go
ride outside again sometime before the end of time.

What are the favored 26 inch road-ish tire favorites these days? I have had
and disliked Schwalbes. My last set of Marathon Supremes picked up an
ungodly array of laceration-inducing, afternoon-ruining, sharp objects. I
was quite pleased with the Panaracers until I started riding inside. My
downstairs neighbors are probably unhappy with the thunk-thunk-thunk, too.
It definitely scares the cat. I'm on an MUSA Atlantis and could go up to
about 40mm with my fender setup. Ideas?

[RBW] Stubborn Brooks Saddle

2021-08-02 Thread Lynn Haas
I have a honey colored Brooks Imperial saddle that I bought in 2018. It has
about 2,000 miles on it, and it looks and feels like new... in the worst
possible way.

I've doused it in leather dressing, stored it in a hot garage for a summer,
and put way more miles on it than I want to contemplate. It's had decent
exposure to rain and more than enough heat and sweat. Today I'm going to
swap back to an older Brooks that is nicely broken in, but that I don't
want to use long term for multiple reasons.

What to do?

[RBW] Re: Being Precious About Your Favorite Bike

2021-06-14 Thread Lynn Haas
I usually remove the fenders, wheels, rear derailleur, drop the saddle/seat
post, wrap a plastic grocery bag around the drivechain, and turn the
handlebars. At that point the bike(s) will stand on its head in a very
small space and I can pack other stuff around it. Takes about an hour to
put back together because I'm slow. The last time I carried a bike on a
rear rack down an interstate highway I had to re-tune the whole front end
and that took longer than breaking it down and reassembling it. If you
arrive at your destination with a wiggly headset and broken shifters, you
won't be enjoying your bike at all.

Enjoy your trip!

Speak for yourself. When I had a bike commute I generally saw between 50 to 100
other bike commuters, and only one or two in lycra or bike shorts. If I get to
ride the HHH again I plan to wear a regular sleeveless top, partly for comfort
and partly just to mess with peoples’ heads.

[RBW] Re: Bizarre Winter Weather

2021-02-20 Thread Lynn Haas
That photo of downtown Dallas is beautiful.

I'm in Austin and we're OK. The "rolling blackouts" never really rolled
anywhere; they just turned off power for 40% of town. The other 60% never
lost power at all. For most of us, it's been more annoying than anything
else. Some of our hospitals are without water and that's bad.

If I can hear the fluid trickling around in my trainer at low speed, is
that bad? Putting my Atlantis on a trainer is probably a sin, but I'm
desperate and it's going to be a few more days before the trail is clear.

Based on driver behavior, my most high-viz outfit is a black dress suit and

I have a Cycliq 6 (and a 12 up front) and I could swear that daytime
drivers behind me know that that thing is a camera. I don't turn on the
light, just the camera, and it has a rotating indicator light. Impatient
drivers wanting to turn right on red seemed to suddenly vanish from the
road the day I got it. I also really enjoy being able to share interesting

[RBW] Re: Can I fit J. App. or AHH in back of Civic or Impreza with back seat down?

2020-06-19 Thread Lynn Haas
We had a Civic sedan from 2007 until 2018. I could fit my 52 cm Surly LHT
in with fenders but no front wheel with the stock handlebars (cheapo drop
bars). It was an easy two-person job with practice, but more difficult by
myself. When I switched to Nitto Noodles, I suddenly couldn't fit the bike
in due to the bar flare, unless I wanted to take off the fender and turn
the stem. The critical spots were the width at the opening between the
trunk and interior (I usually dropped my seat post) and at the trunk
opening, where the handlebars needed to fit through at full width while
attached to the bike. If you get another hybrid, watch out to make sure the
battery doesn't rob you of any space between the trunk and interior. It was
a tight fit.

Since then we have converted to hatchbacks. My 53 cm Atlantis fits OK in
our Prius C. I have to take off the front wheel, and scoot the car's
passenger seat up a bit. For a road trip this winter, I took off both
wheels, the fenders, and the rear derailleur, and stood it on its head
across the back cargo area. I've taken two cross-country trips in that car
and spent about $15/day in gas both times.

When we shopped for our most recent car we took my bike, and none of the
dealers even batted an eye. The Honda dealer said he saw a ton of
bicyclists and that they usually wanted to be able to stand their bikes up
on the forks. He even knew which models would fit my bike that way, versus
bikes for tall people.

Kind regards,
Lynn

[RBW] Re: Pedals

2020-06-02 Thread Lynn Haas
SPDs here, usually M520s, although right now I have some dual-sided ones
because I had romantic visions of hopping on my bike to run short errands
in sneakers. Turns out, I rarely run short errands via bike and switching
shoes is not a problem. The flat side of the pedal is further down than the
SPD side and makes me hyperextend my leg. I also rarely wear sneakers but
that's another story.

I have a gimpy hip and the clipless pedals keep my leg from flopping
around. We have lots of bikes with flat pedals at work, and I've learned
the hard way to stay off of them if I want to be able to walk the next day.
I'm glad (but also sad) to hear that other people ride clipless for the
same reason.

[RBW] Re: A Lesson: When buying a vehicle that will transport a Clem, measure twice and buy once.

2019-10-30 Thread Lynn Haas
I bought a new car last year, and the salesperson said that he had seen an
amazing variety of things brought in to check for fit. The Honda dealer
even knew what models would fit a bike standing on the front fork.

We can get two bikes, camping/roadtrip gear, our dog + her bed and crate,
and two humans in our Subaru Crosstrek if I remove all four bike wheels,
lower or remove the seatposts, stand both bikes on their heads, put mine in
handlebars first, and then put my husband's bike in handlebars last. I
think once I might have taken off a front fender. At work we routinely turn
handlebars to cram bikes in tighter, and we used to have 75 bikes with
detachable pedals. These days we are putting foam koozies on bike pedals so
we can cram the bikes together for transport and not have the pedals
scratch or damage the bikes.

When I had a Surly LHT and a Honda Civic sedan, I was fine lowering the
rear seats, taking off the front wheel, and easing the whole thing in the
trunk... until I switched from the stock bars to Nitto Noodles. That extra
1" or so of flare wouldn't fit no matter how I turned the front end.

Repair shops tend to be surprised when I pull my bike out of the car and
ride away while the car gets worked on.

I knit and spin (with a spinning wheel, not an indoor bike-type thing) and
make a few kinds of lace. Great hobby because it has astonishing depth, but
you can also keep it as simple as you want. It can be cheap or expensive,
although I suggest budgeting maybe $100 for startup so you can begin with a
lesson or two at a local yarn store and good wool. If you have kids you can
make stuff for them and knitting is a nice portable craft to take along and
keep you busy during stuff like soccer games or playground time. Check out
Ravelry.com if you want to see the possibilities; my username is
titianknitter if anyone wants to look me up over there. Lately I'm into
buying raw wool straight off the sheep and processing it all the way to
finished garments.

Fun fact: Knitting and weaving were traditionally male occupations. Women
spun.

If I had time for another hobby I'd restore vintage bikes.

[RBW] Re: Make my AHH look less tempting!

2019-09-28 Thread Lynn Haas
On university campuses, I personally worry the most about damage from other
bikes. Sometimes they get tangled up and get damaged when the owners try to
separate them. Once I saw a young man get frustrated and go straight down
the rack, kicking every bike as hard as he could. It was a huge mess and
I'm pretty sure everyone parked there had to find another way home that
night.

If your university has bike lockers, they are wonderful. I had one while in
school after my beater was stolen off of my back porch and I decided that
I'd rather ride my nice bike that was safer in bad weather anyway. I liked
being able to leave my helmet and shoes (and sometimes heavy books) with my
bike. It meant I had to walk a little further to my buildings, but I always
had a reserved parking spot on a campus with a perennial bike rack
shortage. I loved having the bike locker.

I've seen too many upside-down bikes missing both wheels to trust locking
skewers.

[RBW] Re: What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

2019-04-24 Thread Lynn Haas
I didn't know those barrel-key locks were even around anymore! Be aware
that combination cable locks are also super easy to open. Any lock can be
defeated with the right tools and a little time. I've heard it said that
the easiest way to steal a bike is to go in broad daylight with an orange
safety vest and power tools.

When we bought our first house 10 years ago, a previous resident had left a
barrel-key U-lock locked up to a patio rail. Our real estate agent kept
making a big deal about the seller removing the lock before we closed on
the house. She couldn't believe me when I said not to worry, I would deal
with it.

The best lock is on the front door. I have arranged inside parking at every
job I've ever had, and at university I was able to rent a bike locker for
$60/year. Bike lockers are marvelous.

For outside parking, I use a modern flat-key U-lock (I own a Kryptonite but
I usually use an OnGuard borrowed from work because it's about 2 pounds
lighter) and a keyed cable lock for the wheels. I once came back to my bike
to find the cable lock cut 1/2 way through. I guess the would-be thief got
that far, saw the U-lock, and moved on to the next bike.

I tried a TIGR Mini. It was phenomenally light in weight and seemed very
secure, but it was too small to easily fit around my wheel or frame + most
bike racks. I think that it would be OK for a skinny road bike.

Good technique is important. Make sure you lock the frame and not just one
wheel. It's ridiculously easy to release a front wheel, take the unlocked
frame, grab an unlocked front wheel off of another bike, assemble the two,
and ride away. Lots of fun to demo for a crowd, too. If you set it up right
it only takes about 30 seconds.

[RBW] Re: Dealing with verbal harrassment on the road

2019-04-23 Thread Lynn Haas
My absolutely favorite form of harassment is when I am yelled at for
blowing a stop sign that isn't there, usually at a 2-way stop. It's
happened a few times. Once it was a cop.

The simplest (definitely not the easiest) way to de-escalate is to ignore
them. If you are in danger, remember that you are on a bike and can get
away via places they can't go - U-turn on the sidewalk, over the grass,
behind another vehicle, etc. I sometimes pull out my phone and take
photos/video, in which case they can't shut up and zoom away fast enough.

I know more than a few cyclists, and drivers, running cameras, front and
rear, full time. I can't bring myself to that level of paranoia on my bike.
It kills all of the joy.

[RBW] Re: Cargo e-bikes are an amazing concept, but the options are imperfect

2019-03-17 Thread Lynn Haas
I test rode a Yuba Spicy Curry a few years ago. If we ever go back down to
one car (unlikely) that's what I would go for.

Definitely get something with a throttle. eBikes are super heavy and uphill
starts suck.

Looks like you know what to look for, but I'll add the mention anyway -
with eBikes, the tech is still expensive and manufacturers frequently cut
component quality to make a price point. I personally would not consider an
eBike with an MSRP of less than $4k.

I work at BikeTexas here in Austin. Shoot me an email when you get here and
we can take our Atlantii and go for a beer. We seem to have a surprising
number of Riv bikes here in town.

[RBW] Re: MIT Atlantis with drops?

2019-03-16 Thread Lynn Haas
In answer to questions:

The stem is Nitto, it's what Riv put on it. I'll probably pull it in favor
of something with a removable faceplate at some point. I'd prefer to have
short reach/shallow drop bars but they won't slide through that
non-removable faceplate.

Tires are Schwalbe Marathon Supremes. Worth every last penny.

I ordered the bike in October 2017, and it arrived in August 2018, so
that's where I got the fork. I'm still looking for the perfect rack. My old
bike - gone to an excellent home - was a Surly LHT, and I always ran a
Tubus Tara up front. I liked the stability I got from the low-rider (see
about re: vision). I still have the Tara and might do some experimental
bending to see if it will work on the P-Quod. I'm not planning any touring
until fall so I've got time.

My coworker, who has never read Moby Dick, thinks it's spelled P-Quod and I
might keep his spelling.

[RBW] Re: MIT Atlantis with drops?

2019-03-14 Thread Lynn Haas
It's a 53cm MUSA, so a slightly shorter wheelbase, but mine has been great
with drop bars. I'm not particularly confident on gravel (I have some
vision problems) and this is the best of any bike I've ridden on local
crushed stone trails. It took a bit to get everything dialed in, but that
was mostly due to needing a lot less setback on my seatpost - I had to
switch to a zero-setback.

It looks nice enough that when I took it to the LBS for a tuneup, the
mechanic couldn't find it in the shop because the owner had it out in the
backyard taking glamour shots. He put it on Instagram.

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-02-19 Thread Lynn Haas
I've used the onX app in the past and was able to download detailed maps
prior to my trip. It was a little fiddly to get set up, but worth it
because it shows land ownership boundaries (very nice in areas where people
really do shoot first and ask later) and as long as I had the correct maps
downloaded before I left, it worked exclusively on GPS.

onX has become more hunting-oriented over the years, so if you aren't down
with that, definitely go with another app.

[RBW] Re: HubbuhHubbuh email from Riv & donation idea

2019-01-28 Thread Lynn Haas
Hi, I'm Lynn, and I'm de-lurking to raise my hand and say that if a back-up
charity is needed, I've put out a feeler to a suitable blind and visually
impaired stoker group here in Austin, Texas. If they are interested (and I
can't imagine they wouldn't be!) I can make the introduction. The expertise
and ability to round up necessary components is definitely here; I work for
BikeTexas and I have more than enough connections to take on the project.

Kind regards,
and back to non-profit bicycle stuff,
with my Atlantis parked at my desk,
