[RBW] Re: It's getting to be that time of year again: Time to order stuff from Rivendell

2019-11-15 Thread Matt D
I could have sworn the for-real Final Legolas has been sold something like
three times but maybe my memory fails me... but if that is the case, boy,
if I were selling the last of something several times over I'd sure
reconsider having canned it!

Oh, and I suppose that in my roundabout way I've done my part too. I do a
bit of DJ work and for some reason or another a lot of clients are eager to
pay me in gift cards. I'm sure it's a tax shelter or grift of some sort but
as long as I get paid I'm alright. Last job I directed to route payment by
way of our boys in Walnut Creek, will probably put it towards those
v-brakes whenever they come out. Don't have any v-broken bikes at the
moment but the lack of really attractive ones is an issue that I'm positive
I will encounter in the future.

[RBW] Roadini/Roadeo official tire clearance uprated?

2019-11-15 Thread Matt D
Riv recently added a new explainer to the "Bicycles & Frames" page on the
website. It includes this line concerning the Roadini and Roadeo:

*Rivendell differences: More comfort, safer, more useful, more beautiful,
and much more versatile. The bigger tires improve life on rough roads, and
the clear fenders with tires up to 32mm, or without fenders, tires to 35mm.
. Most other road bikes still being made max out at 28mm, with no fender at
all.*

But here's what the Roadeo page says concerning clearance

*FOR SURE: The Jack Brown, which is NOMINALLY 33.333mm wide on most
rims--but that's irrelevant, remember?--measures about 700mm on a 24mm rim.
It's the fattest unfendered tire we can categorically commit to fitting the
ROADEO fork. If you want fenders also, best limit the tire to 682mm
height...which will be about a 28.*

And likewise, from the Roadini brochure:

*2. the same tire clearances (as the Roadeo)—up to a 35mm with no fender,
and easily a 28mm with.*

So what should I believe? Roadeo said 28 fendered/33 1/3rd unfendered,
Roadini said 28 fendered/35 unfendered, and now it's come down that
supposedly they'll work with 32s and fenders. And then of course we have at
least one person on this list further muddying the waters by revealing that
with careful caliper choice up front you can wedge 38s in a Roadini, but
that's for sure unofficial. It does serve as an argument in favor of the
original clearance estimated perhaps being a little conservative, though.

So, I know I've asked this on here before but maybe it's worth revisiting -
who out here is running tires over 28 with fenders on a Roadeo/Roadini?
How's it going? I hear tell you have official support now.

Re: [RBW] Anyone elsed notice Rivendell's freaky, inconsistent seatpost standards?

2019-11-11 Thread Matt D
Fair enough, it's only freaky and inconsistent by modern standards I
suppose. That bit about the tubeset diameters makes a lot of sense, thanks.
Anyone have a list of what tube specs have been used and when? That would
be interesting to see.

It's way easy to find 27.2 as that's the most common current road standard.
It's not hard to find 26.8 per se, there just isn't much variety. Not that
you can't be happy with a Nitto post for the rest of your life, of course,
but that lugged one is neat and 27.2 only.

Eric, Velo Orange had Kalloy make them 300mm long one-bolt posts in a range
of weird sizes for $25 a pop. 25.0/4, 26.2/4/8, 27.0/2. Fantastic resource
for older bikes.

Re: [RBW] briar tires

2019-11-11 Thread Matt D
Why isn't tubeless an option? Haven't got an appropriate wheelset, no
budget for it, just don't like the idea?

I'm not a huge fan of tubeless for most purposes but that's a use case for
which I would certainly consider it. The reason it's so popular in MTB is
that you can run lower pressures for more comfort and better traction
without the danger of a pinch flat. It's also popular with people riding
super-supple tires like Compass/Rene Herse on road and gravel because you
can run thinner casings if you don't have to worry about a ride-ending
series of flats from small things like thorns.

Your use case is somewhere in between, you're riding trails but you aren't
riding hard enough to risk PF'ing on a rock garden so the reason you're
doing it is more similar to that of the Bicycle Quarterly adherent. Tires
with tons of belts and protection don't feel very good and don't conform
around obstacles as well, meaning that you have less traction offroad. You
can probably get the same flat protection without tubeless but you'll cost
yourself ride quality. In your situation I would use a 48mm Gravelking SK
set up tubeless on Velocity Cliffhanger or VO Voyager rims.

[RBW] Anyone elsed notice Rivendell's freaky, inconsistent seatpost standards?

2019-11-11 Thread Matt D
So what's the deal with Grant's thinking on seatposts? There are a lot of
Rivs that come with the 26.8mm seatpost standard. Roadini, Sam H., and the
lower two sizes of the Clem come with 26.8 and I believe all the others are
made for 27.2 or 29.8 in the case of the Hubbuhubbuh and 59cm Clem.

So, my questions...

Considering how hard they are to come by outside of the stock Kalloy
seatposts Rivendell ships with frames, "Dajia Cycleworks" (really just a
Velo Orange house brand), and Nitto stuff, why use it at all? Does the
0.4mm jump really impart much of a benefit to ride quality? If it does and
you're already willing to forego wide compatibility why not go straight to
26.0? When 26.8 isn't used, why isn't it used? Why jump straight to 29.8
for the largest Clem? If a 59cm Clem needs such a beefy seatpost shouldn't
the 57 and 61 Roadinis get one too, or are they not offroady enough? Why do
tall Clems have to use a seatpost in a size Rivendell doesn't even sell? Do
the Roadeo and Homer use 27.2 so people can use more conventional
with-the-times parts on it and if so, why not others too?

I've always been baffled by this so if anyone with inside knowledge can
explain this to me I'd love to hear why.

Jay, you think you'd be up to trade the frame for a near-new 61 Roadini

[RBW] Re: Roadini Clearance

2019-10-26 Thread Matt D
Remember that Roadinis have wonderfully comfortable, flexible forks that
make them pretty exceptional gravel bikes for what they are... but that
also means that you may want to stick closer to the advertised clearance
(28 with/35 without fenders, remember) if you're heavy enough to really put
that fork flex to use. I'd be a little nervous running 38s on my Roadini,
personally, but I don't know how much all that movement I see at the fork
tips translates to movement at the fork crown.

[RBW] Spindle length for TA Cyclotouriste on Roadini?

2019-09-30 Thread Matt D
Just grabbed a TA Cyclotouriste for my Roadini without overthinking it as I
usually do, price was right and it already had 46/30 rings. Need to order a
BB now, is anyone else running the same or similar setup? I'm fairly sure
118mm is the right spindle length, that's what VO recommends for their
46/30 Cyclotouriste clone and this 11 year old RBWOB thread about the Saluki

recommends the same but Sheldon claims it's 115
and that's enough to give me
pause. What do you think - 118 or 115?

Oh, and would anyone be interested in the BSA threaded TA bottom bracket it
comes with? It's probably the right length but I suppose I just don't keep
it real enough to deal with repacking and adjusting, especially given the
proportion of gravel to road I ride. Haven't got my hands on it yet but
here's a pic from the eBay listing.

[RBW] Re: Creaking + Nitto Noodle stem compatibility

2019-09-14 Thread Matt D
Hudson - now that you say it I looked it up and it turns out that can be an
issue. I'll try it and report back.

Joe - You absolutely sure? Sorry I forgot to mention this is a 61cm
roadini, head tube is 260.8mm on the page + 50mm of headset + spacers +
stem is 30mm above the lowest you can adjust it. Technomics have a 225mm
quill so the butting would need to begin 115cm above the fork crown for
that to be an issue. The wiggle is barely perceptible anyway, if I had to
guess I'd say it's 0.2mm at most.

[RBW] Creaking + Nitto Noodle stem compatibility

2019-09-14 Thread Matt D
Hi all,

I'm having some issues with creaking from the cockpit area of my Roadini under
side-to-side force. I'm using a Technomic at the moment adjusted very low, 3cm
or so above minimum, and I think the play caused by the friction point being so
low is causing it - there's a very little bit of visible motion between the
stem and steerer tube when I wobble it.

Two questions:

1. Have any of you experienced this creaking issue with tall quill stems
adjusted low? I think that may be the issue but I'm not 100% sure. RBWOB is the
place to ask about tall quill stems anyway...

2. What shorter stems is the Noodle compatible with? Obviously Technomic but I
tried to thread another 40cm (this creaky one is 44cm) into a Nitto Dynamic
stem with a wider clamp and found the curves are too tight to fit in it. Is the
clamp of the Technomic the same as that on the Pearl/NP? Is anyone else running
Noodles successfully on other stems shorter than a Technomic?

[RBW] Wild speculation on Hodges B. Gallop

2019-08-03 Thread Matt D
>From the most recent Blahg:
*"Hodges B. Gallop didn't get back to me about the bike name thing, and
I've since discovered that he died in 2017. This HBG thing is about a name
for a new bike that'll happen in about a year."*

So what do you think it'll be - or, more accurately, what do you selfishly
hope it'll be? I'm both hoping and tentatively suspecting that it'll be a
sort of Roadini Plus, a sort of successor to the Legolas and Hillborne at
the $900-1000 less-lugged pricepoint. My one complaint with this Roadini is
that I feel like the gravel doubletrack (the Baton Rouge-New Orleans
section of the Mississippi River Trail) I like to ride is on the outer edge
of its intended use case. No durability concerns but a little more
clearance for a fender with 32s wouldn't hurt. Something that's perceived
as a nicer alternative to the Surly Crosscheck would do great things for
the company too, I think. I know a lot of people who love the idea of
Rivendell but they just don't have $1500 to drop on an AHH to get road-like
geometry and country-bike clearance at the same time.

Your thoughts?

[RBW] FS - 62cm Breadwinner Continental Complete Bike

2019-05-27 Thread Matt D
Yeah, I think this would fit better in the iBOB group. Breadwinner is
kinda-sorta Rivendell-adjacent and that's the group for that sort of thing.

Outgrowing a 62? That's impressive stuff. Congratulate your son on his
pituitary gland for me, please.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadini fendering at 32mm?

2019-05-14 Thread Matt D
Quick word on how cool it is to have this community - mention a facebook
post from someone who fendered a 33mm Roadeo and then get advice from the
guy himself. You don't get this sort of thing with Trek or Specialized (of
course) or even other smaller frame manufacturers. Thanks, guys!

Yes, so it does seem like it's a sketchy fit but Longboards are the best
bet (excluding futzing with metal hardware) because of something or other
about how they're mounted. Ours is not to question why, I suppose. Are
there by any chance any less-than-full-coverage fenders that won't look too
cheap and nasty to leave on? Ass Savers and things like that seem like a
decent solution but I think they might end up being either too cheaply made
or techno-futuristic to be appropriate for regular use.

[RBW] Roadini fendering at 32mm?

2019-05-13 Thread Matt D
My 61 Roadini is set up with 17mm Alexrims G6000 rims, Panaracer Gravelking
32c tires (which run true to size), and Tektro R539 brakes. I'm headed to
merrie olde England in June with bicycle in tow and I'd like to prepare for
the rain that seems to go along with the island but I'm not sure I can fit
them.

My research has only turned up this - Paul Gong on a RBWOB facebook group
says:
*"I have a Roadeo which has the same designed-in clearances. I can just fit
Jack Browns and SKS P45 Longboards with careful installation. This was a
combo that Rivendell often featured on their website and Instagram. I'm
pretty certain metal fenders like VO and Honjo wouldn't fit with Jack
Browns. Their design and hardware require more clearance than Longboards."*

Jack Browns, of course, being 33.3mm. That makes me suspect that
Rivendell's limit of 28 with fenders might be a little conservative. I
don't intend to ride many loose surfaces or gravel so I'm not all too
worried about things getting caught under it. Is anyone else running
fenders above 28mm on their Roadini or Roadeo and if so, what do you
suggest I use?

[RBW] Re: 0mm offset Nitto Quill Stem

2019-05-04 Thread Matt D
VO and Factory Five make some decent faceplate quills, but both are flawed:
VO's has those ugly above-bar bolts on it and a 90-degree bend that results
in some rise, and the F5 Titan's height is 60mm less than the Technomic and
only comes in 90mm extension and for 31.8mm handlebars. I believe Factory
Five's design made taller, less fist-shaped, and in a wider range of
extensions and bar sizes would be the perfect stem.

[RBW] Re: Roadini handlebar ideas

2019-04-22 Thread Matt D
I've heard some good things about Velo Orange's crazy bars, offers both
upright swept and forward bullhorn-like positions. Unfortunately they're
impossible to thread through a quill stem, so you'll need to run a
threadless stem adapter or find a quill stem with a removable faceplate. VO
also happens to sell the only removable faceplate quill stem that's as tall
as a Technomic, funny how things go like that...

Re: [RBW] WTB: 61cm Roadini frameset

2019-04-07 Thread Matt D
How much are you asking for it? Might have some friends interested. To be
perfectly honest if I had known someone in the state had a full one for sale in
Grant's more modern geometry I'd have probably gone for that over building a
new Roadini from the frame up. Not that I regret it, of course.

If you ever have any parts for sale let me know - I trust the taste of
Rivendell owners implicitly.

Re: [RBW] Re: Got my 61 Roadini set up!

2019-04-05 Thread Matt D
A 118mm bottom bracket instead of 119? Ah, I could never, the chainline has
to be perfect for when I'm climbing in the 52x11 - do you know what happens
when a chain snaps under that kind of power? But seriously though, 118mm
should work fine.

I'm not entirely wed to the noodles but they are quite comfortable as they
stand. I like being able to slide back and forth on the ramps and hoods to
adjust my uprightness. They had two Noodles (44 and 42, these are 44) as
well as those TRP levers at the co-op for awfully cheap, I've been quite
lucky in parts there for everything but quill stems. If I readjust and I'm
still whacking my forearms into the tops when I'm in the front of the drops
I could probably work with some flared drops or something like Soma's
Highway 1 or Brevet Randonneur bars.

Can anyone point me to a Nitto stem dealer with a generous return policy?
Hate to use Amazon but that could be the answer to finding the right one,
make a massive order of every size of Nitto stem they have and return all
the ones that don't work. It would be neat if there were a Zappos or Amazon
Closet-like service for dialing in the fit on a new bike, order a box of
stems and bars and just keep the ones that work.

Re: [RBW] WTB: 61cm Roadini frameset

2019-04-05 Thread Matt D
Hey, I was just talking to someone about how many Rivendells we think there
are in Louisiana. He said he'd seen a Ram in NOLA - yours is green, right?
If so that makes at least you, Robert Bailey, and me.

Well, it seems like I'm the only one in the state holding on to my tall
Rivendell - Robert is also selling his 61cm 1997 LongLow, asking about
$2000 for the whole thing. I considered buying it but it definitely fits
smaller than a modern up-sloping-top-tube Rivendell, the Roadini fits me
perfectly but the LL's level top tube is a lot shorter and the standover
height is smaller, fits more like a 57-58 in my opinion. It's a very
well-appointed bike. Here's a post on the group from two years ago about it,

I test-rode it about two months ago and as far as I know he still hasn't
sold it.

[RBW] railbiking video

2019-03-10 Thread Matt D
Al, the rolling resistance has got to be very low if you use smooth tires or
metal rims. I think all you would really need is a hard rubber lip on the
inside of a wider fatbike-width rim to really do it right. There's no uphills
or downhills because the maximum grade a train can handle is 3% and no sharp
turns because trains don't like those either. Maybe a little boring but you
could go quite fast and see things no other cyclists can see. I'd imagine it's
a wonderful, relaxing experience.

It'd be nice to see a modern purpose built railbike with wider clearances and
custom rims at the same gauge as the rails and an outrigger made collapsible
and portable with S couplings. Maybe even one of those wheel carriers like
British cyclists used to carry a set of lightweight racing wheels and tires to
the track back in the old days, that way you could use it to get to and from
the railway too.

Hey, anyone want to put down a deposit on a Railroad Bubbe? Maybe base it on
the Clem Smith, hobos did ride the rails after all...

[RBW] Re: New BLAHG

2019-03-10 Thread Matt D
Not sure how I feel about the instrument decals, seems too twee by half in
their current form. Maybe I'd like them more if they were more understated
or placed somewhere like the underside of the seatstays where they're still
visible but less obvious. Then again, GBW is meant to be the antithesis of
ultra-serious mountain biking culture, so maybe it's a good thing.

That's a funky custom for sure. Wonder what the customer's specifications
were? The chopped lugs look pretty great, possibly even greater considering
the instability of the lug manufacturers. Maybe in a post-Long Shen world
Riv can keep the aesthetic of lugs alive to some degree with pseudo-lugs
like that made of cut tubing, like those on the Llewellyn Colossus - look
it up, neat bike. If being forced into welding the seat tube joint on the
low end means that they save enough money to pay for something more ornate
than the napkin rings up front I'm for it.
