[RBW] Re: Ultradynamico Tires

2020-06-18 Thread Mike E
I think most riders consider the Ultradynamicos dirt centric tires. They
may not be ideal for paved roads. The Rose works well on gravel but is a
bit knobby on pavement. The knobs are spaced very far apart. I found the
Cava a bit harder to like. The micro-knobs are very thin and tall and they
squirm noticeably when riding on pavement. Unfortunately the 700C model is
based on the Cava and not the better liked Rose. You can read my review of
both tires at https://gravelanddirt.blogspot.com. Let us know what you
ultimately decide and how you like your new tires!

Re: [RBW] Rene Herse Tires with tubes

2020-06-16 Thread Mike E
Maybe I misunderstood the comment. From what I've read the Extralights have
the same tread thickness as the standards. Just the casing is different.
Waiting for my first set of Extralights right now...;-)

First off thank you for all the discussions and constructive criticism when
we launched the blog. As we move forward, the title says it all. We're
asking for input into which tires you want to see tested next on
Gravel&Dirt. Go to https://gravelanddirt.blogspot.com to register your

[RBW] Re: Gravel & Dirt: New blog about equipment

2020-05-26 Thread Mike E
Interesting! Just to clarify the WTB Byway tires we tested were the
aftermarket model. The previous owner of the bike had bought them at a bike
shop and installed them just prior to selling the bike. In the future we'll
include the source of the tires in the reviews. I've added that info to the
WTB and Ultradynamico reviews too.

[RBW] Re: Gravel & Dirt: New blog about equipment

2020-05-25 Thread Mike E
Thank you for the encouragement. As to the difference between OEM and
retail tires I can see using a wire bead instead of folding to reduce the
cost. That's not the case here. All the tires we tested have folding beads.
I'll add that to the specs. If a different casing is used you'd expect the
weight to be different, too. We list the weights and at least for the WTBs
they match the weight in the manufacturer's specs. The Ultradynamico was 30
grams heavier than spec but I doubt they are making an OEM version of those
tires. In any case ours were purchased at a bike shop for retail.

[RBW] Gravel & Dirt: New blog about equipment

2020-05-23 Thread Mike E
We just made our new blog live. We're a group of riders who can't resist a
narrow ribbon of gravel or dirt (or even asphalt) stretching into the
hills. We've been looking for reliable information about equipment,
especially reviews of tires for our rides. We're just seeing paid
advertisements or reviews that don't provide enough context to make good
decisions and now we've decided to fix that and post our own tire
reviews. We're starting off with two tire reviews that we've had in the
works. More to come soon! Leave a comment if you have something to add.
Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Tire Recommendations for an All-Rounder

2020-02-18 Thread Mike E
Not sure the Ultradynamico is fast rolling on pavement. The knobs are so
widely spaced that the tire is bumping from one knob to the next and the
casing seems stiffer than the RH tires mentioned above. I did a review of
them on the 650B list a while ago:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!search/ultradynamico/650b/EjCEHJvZDIw/-3DGyRHPAgAJ

Has anybody done a real performance test of these?

Love your build! How do you like the Paul cantis? And like everybody else,
eager to get some feedback on the RH Hurricanes.
