[RBW] MAFAC brake DIY light mount article?

2017-08-30 Thread Mitch Browne
A friend of mine will need to mount an Edelux I to the Nitto M12 rack on
his wife's Appaloosa. I know there are manufactured adapters, I have one on
my Atlantis, but there are also DIY alternatives. The latest one being the
very manly chainring adapter showcased in the recent Riv email letter.
There was another, RIV or maybe BQ, that showed how to use an arch from a
dissembled MAFAC type centerpull brake. I searched the archives but can't
find the article and now it's eating me.

Does anyone recall where this article was posted?

[RBW] Riv bike packing documentary

2016-01-30 Thread Mitch Browne
Group,

Several months back I believe a link was posted to a Riv video or web
how-to for a new way of packing bikes for shipping.

It involved cutting strips of card board the width of the box and then
inserting the strips in the frame triangle and other areas of the shipping
box to stiffen the sides and negate most unintentional crushing during
shipment.

I looked on Riv's website, Blug, and searched this group but can't seem to
find it.

I'll be shipping a Rivish mixte to a friend soon and that method seems well
worth trying.

Can anyone point me to this information?

Steve Palincsar recollects Jan had a written opinion on 700c max tire size.
Coincidentally I was reading VBQ Vol 2 number 3 from winter 2004 and found
"Choosing Your Wheels: History, Comfort and Rolling Resistance." He makes
a case for a "golden mean" that's achieved with 700c x 25 and 650b x 38.
His escape comment in the conclusion is "Whether this is arbitrary or
really results in the most pleasant handling bike remains unknown."

I'd say in the intervening 10+ yrs he's softened his conclusion and
accomodates wider tires in his supple equation. For me commuting in the
dark to work and running errands around town over the years I've found 42mm
Schwalbes worked well for cracks, roots, branches etc. For me 42+mm of any
tire is preferred for the type of riding I do.

His article also mentioned the not as robust nature of supple tires which
painfully I've found true. I now have Stan's in my tubes and tire wipes
installed. I may add a rabitt's foot (or lucky charm) if all else fails.

My conclusion. Supple tires are comfortable and fun but can be painful with
flats or replacement cost.

Re: [RBW] Re: New fat 700 tires! 700x42 ultra light

2015-11-02 Thread Mitch Browne
I have tried both Compass EL and Soma EX 700c tires in recent weeks
and find the Compass feels much more plush. I believe the difference
between casings between the two have been discussed in recent threads.
I do find the Soma sidewalls to be a little more stiff.

I have a set of Soma SL tires (insanity thrives) coming in a day or
two for fair SL to EL comparison.

If Compass made 700c x 42 I'd go for those without a doubt. Each rider
knows their limits in terms of wear, use, budget so EL's won't work
for everyone. I am at my limit ;)

Compass tires have no minimum air pressure or direction on sidewall.
Soma says minimum of 40 psi. In my opinion they can go a few pounds
lower but due to stiffer tread (by design for wear) they start to feel
squirrely at 35 in the rear.

I am taking the train from San Luis Obispo to San Diego on Monday.

I can roll a bike on board for the trip down but the return trip on Friday
may involve shipping the bike back in an Amtrak box.

I visited Amtrak today and of course the box says remove pedals, turn
handlebars and roll in box.

The beater (stealth) '87 MB-1 is fitted with Bosco Bullmoose bars. Does
anyone know if these will properly fit for Amtrak shipping?

Also, is there room to drop a fold up pannier inside without issue? I
thought I read of the box instructions that nothing else was allowed in box

I bought two of the no-longer-available Railroad shirts in medium a couple
of years back.

Both are labeled M but one fits a little larger than the other and has only
be worn about 3 times.

I'd like to sell the larger than medium barely worn one for $50 shipped or
trade for a medium Wooly Warm button vest.

This is the Wolly Warm that completely buttons down the front and opens up.

Thanks,

Mitch Browne

Re: [RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?

2013-06-18 Thread Mitch Browne
Manny,

I've been mostly keeping out of this discussion but will offer my local
insight here.

I work at Cuesta College, half-way between SLO and Morro Bay. It also
happens to be directly across Highway 1 from El Chorro campground.

I ride to work most days and the campus is right at the Marine curtain
between inland and coast influences. From my house in SLO 8 miles away I
can never predict what the weather will be close to campus. It's a nice mix
of sunny 6:30 mornings or maybe misting fog. This morning it was foggy all
the way to the coast. yesterday it was sunny though foggy on the coast.

Summer is foggy most days in Morro Bay. I like the fog for a few miles but
once I get wet and start to cool I appreciate sunshine. Your chances are
good that you will see fog most of the day and night at Morro Strand
campground. You're likely to see sun sometime in the morning at El Chorro.
Chance are you'll see sun even sooner in SLO.

We just hired a new web programmer from Hanford who camped at El Chorro
last week. He said they have lots of primitive campsites that are
first-come-first-served, no reservations. He added that the $1 in quarters
gets you 10 minutes of hot shower water. It's a county park staffed by
county rangers who close up about 5pm.

IF the Hostel were still an alternative I'll try to think of a place you
might be able to store bikes for the night but none come immediately to
mind. The Hostel is about 200 feet down a small hill from the train
station. Doug, bike parking appears to be in a rack along the Hostel
driveway entrance. I'll try to stop by after work and ask about bike
parking and maybe take pictures.

If you're planning on riding toward the coast I'd recommend gloves, wool,
and some sort of beanie.

There is much to do for everyone but little time ;) Cheers, Mitch

Seems like we are having trouble with camping grounds.

Here's my proposed idea. I don't know how a handful of folks feel about
it. BUT this could work out with some local knowledge around the area.

We could all meet (via car or bike or train or spaceship) at a designated
 spot.

Then we ride to a STEALH camping location good enough for a good group of
folks. Then ride Sunday Morning somewhere.

I don't know how big of a group we are having but if I'm sure we can get a
 head count.

I try not to over think this things. We can worry about camp showers and
water but seriously it's just going to be a night.

 Any thoughts?

I live local and have been attempting to post but posts are automatically

Mike there aren't any stores very close to any of the discussed camp sites.
El Chorro stores are about 4 miles next to CalPoly and the intersection of
Foothill and Santa Rosa (Highway 1). Albertsons grocery, Starbucks, Panda
Express, Pita Pit, Carl's, BBQ etc. I should note there's one small hill
that takes about 2 minutes at 24t + 32t gearing between the campsite and
town.

I think your biggest concern will be nailing down a reservation in the

[RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?

2013-06-12 Thread Mitch Browne
Doug,

I caution you on accommodations.

I believe most campgrounds will be in demand with limited reservations, if
any, with maybe some first come first served spots.

El Chorro says on their website that arriving in the middle toward end of
the week is the best chance.

I wouldn't count on camp ground hopping but then again you might get lucky.

Another thought is checking Craigslist and maybe getting a rental for a few
days, if you have enough people this may be economically workable.

As you know there are many distances / possibilities. Out to the coast and
back could be anywhere from 30-40 miles. looping through Morro Bay to Los
Osos / estuary up over Turri Road to Los Osos Valley Road (LOVR) back
toward SLO up O'Connor way through Camp San Luis / Cuesta College would be
manageable for many.

As mentioned my post that didn't post I am a daily work commuter. 16 miles
round trip from SLO to Cuesta College and errands / shopping on weekends
puts me at a comfortable 90+ miles a week. I don't do much long distance on
the weekends so I don't know many of the local courses but there's
something for everyone.

Re: [RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?

2013-06-10 Thread Mitch Browne
Hi All,

I live in San Luis Obispo. (SLO) I met DougP and his wife when they visited
some months back.

There are several Rivs in town though I'm most familiar with the Atlantis
crowd (me, George, and Hank).

For perspective I'm mostly a work / commuter rider. I ride 16 miles RT from
SLO to Cuesta College (halfway between SLO and Morro Bay) most days and
shopping / get around on weekends. This gives me the 90+ miles / week I
enjoy.

I should mention that the coast can be very over cast in summers and that
the prevailing wind is Nortwest and can be real work in the afternoons. One
other camp ground option is El Chorro Regional Park
http://www.slocountyparks.com/activities/el_chorro.htm This is 7 miles from
the train station / town and at the edge of the marine influence. There is
also a Hostel a block from the train station but I've never stayed there
though it's been a going enterprise for years.

http://www.hostelobispo.com/

In an earlier post some mentioned our weather. I should comment that it's
fairly unique in that SLO is a Mediterranean climate mostly in the mid 70's
- low 80's in the summer. Contrast this with 15 miles away up the Cuesta
Grade on the other side of the Santa Lucia range the temperature is
generally in the 90's to low 100's consistently in the summer. A 30 degree
difference is those few miles is common and makes biking in the Paso Robles
area much less comfortable.

This is also the beginning of tourist season. The town empties of students
and fills with visitors though it's mostly confined to the downtown core. I
imagine there's a premium on hotel rooms and camping spots.

Although it's not likely I'll be joining you on rides, minor surgery in the

The best of the leftovers to me is Morro Strand SP. Flush toilets,

[RBW] Atlantis triple - Phil BB spindle length

2012-08-12 Thread Mitch Browne
I upgrade the mighty Atlantis / Sugino triple as opportunity permits.

I currently have the Riv recommended 107 Tange ($10 Craigslist) installed
which has served me well daily the past few years.

I now have the opportunity to pick up a new 113 Phil.

I was almost certain that in past Riv readers Grant specified a 113 Phil.
Of course I could not find that recommendation anywhere last night as I
poured over past issues.

Canvassing the website did not reveal guidance either.

Does anyone recollect this recommendation?

If this is true does anyone have a guess as to why the 3mm difference each
side between manufacturers for the same bike?

Thanks,

Mitch Browne

[RBW] Re: rene herse crank

2012-05-27 Thread Mitch Browne
Brian,

When you say chain line is adequate do you mean OK or that if you had a
110 BB that you would use that?

I experimented with a TA Carmina triple recently purchased from the list on

Q factor felt better than my XD2.

Sadly I won't be keeping it and will be posting it for sale soon.

I've been commuting for the past few weeks with one of the new Rene Herse
 cranks on my AHH. http://www.compasscycle.com/cranks_bb.html I haven't
seen any reviews on this yet, so I figured I would share a few
thoughts/opinions with the group. I'm not really a crankoholic, and have
mainly ridden wider Q mountain cranks. I mainly wanted to upgrade the bike
a bit, and thought a well built crankset would be a nice add. Something
that would last as long as the frame, perhaps.

I've never had any experience with a narrow tread road bike, and was a bit
worried that having a narrow Q would be a problem. So far that has not
worked out to be the case. I find it comfortable, and natural. The length
of these are 171mm, which is close to what I'm finding to be ideal for me.
I tend to lately favor the 170mm cranks I have on another bike over the
175mm I've been using for the past 20 years.

The finish and feel of these cranks is indeed very nice, and every bit as
good as it has been billed. The chainrings are nice and thick, but
elegant. To me, these cranks feel more solid than the others I've used
lately including Sugino XD, Suntour XC Pro, and modern Shimano Deore and XT
cranks, as well as a Race Face outboard bearing set I have on my mtb.
They are very nice to look at, as well, with a highly polished finish, and
simple, clean and classy lines that go really well with the Rivendell
 frame.

It was recommended by Jan that I use a 110mm bottom bracket, so I ordered
one, but decided to try the cranks with a 107mm that I had on already.
They went on easily, and the arms have at least 3-5mm clearance with the
chainstays. The chainline is adequate, as well. I got 44/28 rings to go
with an 11-32 cassette. This gives me plenty of range for the hilly riding
I do in the area. Bottom line - I highly recommend these. Love em!

[RBW] Re: My Atlantis Frame is Shipping!

2012-03-15 Thread Mitch Browne
Darin,

I don't have pictures at hand but have Marathon Supreme 40's (42-622) /
Longboards on my Atlantis for almost a year now. Oh. and the back rim is
an A719 laced to a White MI5.

Previously I used Marathon Plus 47's with Silver SKS. I still have a new
set of orphaned 47's if interested ;)

I appreciate the sturdiness of the Silver SKS and have them on other bikes
but from a functional stand point the Long boards provide better coverage
and although not quite as sturdy by compare are plenty sturdy.

I like this set up enough that the Supreme's are wearing and I purchased
another set for replacement when these demand change.

One note is that this setup is for daily commute. I commute about 16 miles
daily on surface streets and city roads. I can't opine on fully loaded
touring.

Finally, I do receive regular compliments about the bike when out and
about. My stock response is and it's highly functional I like the fact
that everything works well for me and that it's attractive is secondary.

I'll try to get some pictures up in the next day or two.

I vote for Longboard.

[RBW] Re: Foss tubes

2012-02-02 Thread Mitch Browne
I've been using them for about 4 months on my daily commuter / Marathon
Supreme 40's. The web instructions are odd but improving. You don't need to
use the blue rim tape provided though I did I wouldn't again. The valve
stem isn't threaded, there is no nut to thread over and lock down. Some
instructions I've seen claimed a rubber grommet is included for the the
valve stem but I didn't receive one. I seem to have to top off the air a
little more often than with standard tubes. I was careful to ensure presta
valve properly screwed down. I experienced my first FOSS flat about 2 weeks
ago but haven't repaired it yet, just replaced the tube. Symptoms are,
depending on severity of puncture I suppose, an imperceptible soft
deflation over several hours / night. I noticed the rear tire kind of soft
one morning and just inflated it and rode to work. Next morning soft again.
That's when it dawned on me. Puncture. I read that early batches had
problems with leaks at welds though don't know that's the case here. So, as
has been noted FOSS tubes aren't really flat protection but a way possibly
get home or to a safe place of repair.

Jay, I've used Marathon Plus and now Supreme's exclusively for four years
now. They provide flat protection but there is no flat guarantee, it just
depends on where the offending bit strikes the tire. I had a roofing nail
sticking out of the center of the tire with no damage but a sliver of wire
found it's way along the side. I've gone years without a flat and then a
couple within a month. The only gripe I have with wire bead Schwalbe's is
they can be murder to mount. Some go on easy, others leave you sweating.
I've read videos on mounting by hand alone and others requiring motorcycle
levers ... I've done both.

I much prefer folding bead.

[RBW] Re: The bike collection (or hoard?)

2011-06-21 Thread Mitch Browne
It didn't start out this way, honest. I gave up running due to a knee
two years ago and it's come to this.

2002 58cm Atlantis - first bike I ever built up 1.5 yrs ago. Nice
frame purchased off CL. 16 mi RT daily commuter. Albatross, new
longboards and Marathon Supreme 40's are nice. This one stays, I feel
like the luckiest guy in the world pedaling along to work early
mornings.

'92 58cm XO-1 hanging on wall. This was a dream bike until I got the
Atlantis, never had a chance to bond and now the relationship is null.
It must go soon. I haven't put 5 miles on it.

'82 Mercian King of Mercia 56cm - frame waiting to be built, have
parts, next project, this will be a beauty. Hoping the size work.

'82 NOS 54 cm Koga Miyata frame - sitting in box it arrived in from
Netherlands, another impulse buy. Really nice, internal cable
routing, quality paint - goes

'81 58 cm Miyata 1000 Albatross bars, 32mm Marathon Supremes - This
may go

'83 54 cm Miyata 1000 stock. My 54's were acquired before I clued into
true sizing - Hanging from rafters - goes

'71 54cm Schwinn Paramount P13 - Hanging from rafters for 2 years.
$400 off CL, nice Campy parts, I'm not a racer guy - goes
'90's 54cm Ciocc - Impulse local CL buy, unloved a little rusty -
rafter hanger - goes

'84 52cm Bianchi Limited - turned into a fendered Albatross 650b for
my brother in law. The only thing Italian on the bike is decals. 022
Ishiwata tubing / suntour / nitto components. Ready for pickup by
relatives.

'84 58cm Specialized Expedition. Converted to Albatross (disturbing
trend emerging) with Paul Porteur rack on front and Riv bag, fun
around town.

'94 XO-5 Mixte. Small, free, it's going away.

'90 Scott Single Track mountain bike. This was the one I rode before I
knew about lubing a chain or adjusting a brake. Orphaned but so far
down the list it hangs in the shadows awaiting fate.

I didn't realize how sick I am but feel much better now that it's all
out.

Oh wait. There's an early 70's Peugeot Mixte in the back of the truck
that I'm fixing up for a local gal that had a bike stolen. My first
and last French bike ;)

My therapy is complete.

[RBW] Wooly Warm crooked placket button down sweater vest from RBW garage sale

2011-05-30 Thread Mitch Browne
Long shot,

I picked up one of the $20 Wooly Warm crooked placket button down
sweater vests (small pockets) at the RBWHQ garage sale last year. At
first I was bothered by the placket and didn't think the vest would
work for me but now find it's a base layer for my morning commute as
well as around work and after work fashion wear. Oddly I now find the
defect somewhat charming.

My deep inside contact at RBW, Dave, said they sold all they had on
hand. The new vest is an option but I really prefer the versatility
of the button down front.

If any one has one of these vests in medium and it's not for you then
I can put it to good use.

Thanks,

[RBW] Marathon Supreme Input please

2011-05-16 Thread Mitch Browne
Currently commute daily 16 miles round trip on my 58 Atlantis with
47mm Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires. I've been pretty happy with the
Schwalbes and have them on an XO-1 26x1.25 , Expedition, and Miyata
1000 700x32's mostly for lazy flat protection.

I've ordered a set of long board fenders that won't accomodate the
47's. I am trying to decide on 700x35 or 700x40 Marathon Supremes for
the summer at least. I like the bigger tires since I fear no root,
rock, or limb on my mostly flat ride in.

I want to order the Supremes this week, can anyone share their
personal experience?

[RBW] SKS Longboard Fenders Atlantis?

2011-02-25 Thread Mitch Browne
I saw a set of these fenders on a display bike at RBWHQ during the
recent garage sale and really liked the look.

They're not for sale on Riv's site yet but Harris Cyclery and others
have them.

Which color would go best with the stock Russian submarine blue /
green Atlantis paint?

Silver or Tan?

[RBW] Re: new sweaters/vests

2011-02-05 Thread Mitch Browne
I can vouch for Wooly Warm functionality.

I picked up a vest and pull over at the Riv garage sale this year.
They were strictly impulse buys.

Turns out the vest has become a regular part of my bike / work wear.
It's just a loose enough weave that it makes a great ventilating /
insulating layer between my nylon vest and t-shirt on my 6am 40-55
degree commutes to campus. I have a sleeveless wool riv pull over but
it's too warm.

Wooly Warm Slay the Shivers. The ticket.

[RBW] Re: Most interesting Riv Reader Articles

2011-01-08 Thread Mitch Browne
Re: RR27

It was actually a used XO-2 he picked up for $150.

Comments from the author (Grant?) riding the fully loaded bike.

I rode it about 4 miles loaded up, as I escorted Brad to the
range country out of town, and let me tell you, that thing is
a handful even on smooth pavement. The front and back
parts of the bike move independently, and the flex is way
more than I’ve ever experienced, and I’ve ridden light-
framed road bikes off road with 30lbs of gear. I hate to say
it, but it is a testimony to steel’s fatigue resistance and
toughness, that such a humble bike can handle such heavy
loads on such lousy surfaces for such a long time.

[RBW] Riv Reader 650B Conversion

2010-11-23 Thread Mitch Browne
Unexpectedly received my brother-in-law's 1984 Bianchi Limited
(Ishiwata 022 / Suntour / SR). It seems the only thing Italian is the
name. Anyhow he just hit 60 and likes what I did to my Atlantis and a
couple other bikes. Albatross bar-end cork hemp etc. Does anyone
remember which which Riv Reader has the article on the formula for
determining which frames are good candidates for conversion? His frame
is small, wheels big, I think 650B might work.

Thanks, Mitch

[RBW] Re: matching saddle and handlebar tape

After the first coat dry's you can darken to taste since it dry's
quickly after that.
