I have the Pletscher double on my Rock n' Road.  It works fine with

Fully loaded I have a klick stick stand.  Some guy makes them out of

poles with a open end that fits  where the seat tube and top tube come
together.  The stick comes with bands that hold the breaks against the
wheel.  It has worked great for me with up to a 65 pound load.

I just picked up an old Raleigh 3 speed Sport that has an after market
rear triangle stand and I can tell already that it is more stable than
  the center mounted greenfield.

Pletscher, which I found inadequate -- certainly not as good for eccentric
rear loads as a cheap Greenfield rear-triangle-mount stand, and certainly
*certainly* not as good as the VO. I opine that, for the price (~US27)
   the
VO is value king, but we'll see how long it holds up. It is a bit lighter
than the Hebie at 1 1/2 lb of good ol' Amurkin aluminum. (Actually, that's
   good ol' Amerkin *Chinese* aluminum.)

The Greenfield is great in stores. I wheel the bike through the store as
   my
shopping cart with the stand down despite the eternally circling fixed
drivetrain crankset; I can simply let go as I browse the aisles of plenty,
AND it supports even a way-offside left side load if you turn the wheel
   all
the way to the right. Cheap, black and effective: what else do you need?
   I'd
put one on the Sam Hill in place of the VO but the SH has that bb plate

have
to shim a bit with a piece of aluminum bar stock so the inside of the

the

set
screw that allows you to reduce the degree of retraction. But, still,
if a
stand's job is to support a bike, IME, the VO works considerably
better than
the Pletscher.

[RBW] Re: contemplating change: 1999 longlow

2009-12-13 Thread Nicholas Grieco
Or perhaps 650A ? As an interim measure-

Both the Sun CR-18 and the Col de la Vie are available in ISO590 from
Harris. A set of the 55-73mm dual pivot brakes /might/ work with the
brake bridge where it is.

You would lose about 1cm BB height, and 3mm trail, or so.

When I ordered my 1999 Custom LongLow, I knew a few things at the time:

  and fund them easier to adjust out on the road than cantis;
--The bike would be a rear-loader.

Fast-foward ten years and now I know some new things:

--I can adjust cantis just fine and find that they stop just as well as
  anything;
--after several attempts at frontloading I don't like it enough to change
  my fork rake to accommodate it, so I remain a rear-load rider;
--I want to run bigger tires. With fenders.

It's the classic dilemma of not knowing then what I know now, and wanting
  to change it.
My 1999 LongLow could be much more bike, and getting a framebuilder to add
canti braze-ons and perhaps raise the rear brake bridge a touch would --
SHOULD -- probably cost me less than buying another bike (sorry, Grant). To
that end, how much should I expect to pay for these modifications? I have
another bike to ride in the meantime so I can handle a couple months' wait
but probably not much more than that. Also, while I live in
framebuilder-glutted Portland, the builders I know personally are all
heavily booked into the next decade. Suggestions for a second-tier builder
whose wait-list is shorter would be welcome.

[RBW] Re: panniers

2009-12-09 Thread Nicholas Grieco
Rivendell News, August 20th 2009
http://www.rivbike.com/blogs/news_post/148

We WILL have panniers and a messenger bag (--maybe on
that) in the Spring. There are still some mounting details
to work out for the panniers. The big companies use plastic
hardware that their in-house industrial designers design,
then they order millions of them to get the per-piece cost
down, and that's not in the cards for us. If we can work
out a dumbed-down version that works 95 percent as well,
we'll go that way. We're about 75 percent of the way there
now, but it's not on the front-burner right now.

I think I read somewhere that Riv is going to release a pannier set...
Does anyone know if this is true? I'm in the market for a set...maybe

Will they be part of the Sackville lineup?
WIll they be more for commuting or touring specific?
 Anyone have any ideas?
Also..still on the prowl for an appropriate Sam Hillborne Green paint
 touch up source...
 Thanks!

[RBW] FS: Dura Ace stuff for sale

2009-11-29 Thread Nicholas Grieco
Dura Ace stuff for sale. All prices include insurance and shipping in
the continental US. PayPal.
If these prices are out of line, let me know, but these seemed
relatively appropriate to me.
Please contact me offlist! Thanks-

NOS Dura Ace 7400 stem, new in box with allen wrench.
quill, 110mm long, 26.0mm clamp. (hidden clamp bolt)
$60

NOS Dura Ace 7400 front hub, with correct NOS DA skewer
32 spoke holes
$45

Dura Ace 7703 triple group, 9speed
about 1000 miles on this bike, before I 'hung it up'

LR STI levers
derailleurs
crankset, 30-39-53t
7703 BB, for English BB shell

I have the 7703 front derailleur in two clamp sizes- the 31.8mm
version has the mileage, the 28.6mm is brand new. Which ever one you
need, though if you are building up a Roadeo, you'll probably go for
the 28.6.

The condition of all the components is nearly perfect. really.
Levers and RD are beautiful, they look new. The inside of FD has
normal usage from, well, derailling. And there are some normal, minor
scratches on the cranks from pedaling and laying the bike down, on
that side. Everything is shiny, very nice.
$230

Dura Ace 7402 single pivot brake calipers, 39-49mm reach (not Roadeo
compatible!)
Again, really nice condition, about 1000 (sunny southern California)
miles. Kool Stop Salmon Continental pads
$50

[RBW] Re: Looking for that String in The Custom Color Labyrinth

Your choice of blue appears to be a great complement to the Sam
Hillborne graphics.

It would be interesting to see a picture of your SH, next to a
standard blue AHH, in unbiased lighting.

The August write-up detailing your 3 month experience and observations
on the Hillborne is very insightful- thanks for posting that.

 enough for my needs.

I ended up going with post office blue 2 from this pagehttp://bit.ly/CjsGk

It was a bit hard for me to imagine the paint chip from the web page
on the bike but in the end it seemed to work out.

 Finished bike with paint:http://bit.ly/2o8iWyhttp://bit.ly/48pmAU

As far as paint (powder coat in my case) quality... as others have
alluded to, you're not getting a show bike. Mine had a drip or two. My
custom color was free because of a screw up with the first batch of
Hillbornes so I'm not too worked up about it.

My reason for posting: I really would like some direction on how one
selects and communicates a custom bike color!

I have placed my money on a new AHH, but have not told RBW whether I
want the standard blue color(s) or custom. Now, I have ridden the same
bike (1974 Fuji Finest) since high school. This is the first real new
bike I will have had in all these years, so it is something that I
have to do right for myself.

Blue is good, but a rich earthy green is what really appeals to me.
Like this bike identified as Blue Lemon Photos
  (http://www.flickr.com/photos/eldukedegreaser/3516760819/in/pool-12565...
  ).

How and where does a guy go to look at colors?  I look around me every
day, but how do you identify and communicate a color to the RBW
  folks?

Thanks for any help on this project. It is a big commitment for me and
I don't want buyer's remorse just because the color isn't just so!- Hide
