I agree with this sentiment. My 58cm QB is my “core” bike. Hills, long rides, errands — it does most of what I want from a bike and does it very well. [RBW] Fattest Tire on a QB?

2021-03-28 Thread Robert Gardner
Hi everyone --

I recently saw a post on Instagram (which I have subsequently lost track
of) that showed a QB rocking Ultradynamico 700ccs (I think they were the
Rosè racers).

As I am in the market for some new rubber I thought -- WOWZA -- that would
be fun. So, I'm throwing myself at the mercy of the few the proud the QB
riders on this list. What's the fattest you've been able to go on a QB (if
it helps, I ride a 58...)

Thanks all --

I have one I'd be willing to sell you. Just didn't work out for my setup,

Re: [RBW] Re: new sweaters/vests

2020-08-13 Thread Robert Gardner
Yes. It is glorious.

For those that haven't gotten theirs and the inevitable second run comes --
on sizing: I am 6'2, 215, 34 inch waist (44 long sport coat) and the Large
fits very well. It is stretchy, but if I was going to wear it over a few
layers, I might have sized up. However, it fits so so well. It is SUPER
itchy, but it's fantastic and I'm going to wear it A LOT come fall.

Re: [RBW] Re: Locking Up your Riv

2020-05-27 Thread Robert Gardner
This is a good thread --

On my Quickbeam, I use a locker on my front and rear wheel, which gives me
a bit more piece of mind -- and is pretty bomb proof. Additionally, I use a
Kryptonite U-lock between rear wheel and frame. I live in DC and this has
been a pretty good solution.

For my Roadini, I rarely leave that outside unwatched, as it's my "road"
bike (whatever that means) -- I uses an Abus Bordo LIte 60cm -- it is light
and fits well for easy locking (if I run in to get coffee or whatever).

Re: [RBW] Re: Help Pimp My Quickbeam

2020-05-20 Thread Robert Gardner
I have the same QB and run a Marks rack with Wald large basket up front. Added
a sackville and it is what I use to grocery shop.

I also added a carradice bagman and swift zeitgeist under the saddle and that
works for my work/gym stuff.

I also recommend honjos — they look awful nice on the silver QB...

You have a darn nice bike there!

[RBW] Best 1 - 11 setup

2020-05-14 Thread Robert Gardner
Hi folks --

I am retooling my drive train on my Roadini -- this will be my "fast bike"
and potentially used in whatever we are calling rando rides these days
(pending any actual group rides happening again).

Looking for suggestions on a 1-11 drivetrain -- 11-46? 11-42? I'm in DC, so
will be riding some hills, some flats, but nothing too crazy. Not sure if
I'm going to go Herse or White Industries, so I'd love thoughts there as
well. And, that little thing called a derailleur. I will be using a bar end
shifter.

I'm assuming you all have very definite thoughts, so please treat me kindly
in this thread.

A danke --

Re: [RBW] Re: In Praise of the Roadini

2020-04-15 Thread Robert Gardner
Have to agree. I have a 2x1 roadini that it looks like the folks at Riv built
up for fun (33 1/3 Jack Browns are nice!) — I added towel crust rack bars on
it, front dynamo, rear swift zeitgeist (with Carradice rack for quick
breakaway...) and I’ve been riding pretty much everything in and around DC
pretty much every day since. Have done a few longer rides 50/60 mile rides and
it is just as sweet heading to the store at the top of my street.

Stable, responsive, quick power transfer and...it’s just a gorgeous bike.

Strong recommend. It’s my second Riv but I am riding it more than any other
bike these days.

Re: [RBW] MUSA Pants

2020-03-20 Thread Robert Gardner
My two cents -- they fit exactly like stretchy dickies.

I am 6'2, 220 (36/32 pants) and fairly stocky/broad (played rugby for a
long time) and the larges are just tight enough to not be obviously
'riding' pants. They fit really, really well. So well, that I -- a person
who rarely wears bike-stuff off the bike -- wears them off the bike a lot.
Generally, I wear XLs (XXL in Euro-bike sizing) in things FWIW.

Not sure if that helps or not, but other than a glowing recommendation,
that's what I can tell ya.

Yeah, me also -- really excited for it! Looks like it'll be the "utility"
sweater for commuting, long rides, etc.

[RBW] Who Has A Hubbuhubbuh?

2020-01-15 Thread Robert Gardner
Ok OK -- I have a couple Riv's and I imagine, like most people, I've
dreamed about building more than I actually own (I have gotten rid of lots
of bikes, but never yet gotten rid of a Riv) --

So, with dreams of touring in my mind, I've been pricing out the build at
around 4-5k depending upon the options.

Who has one? What have you ridden? What are your thoughts on the build --
650/700 -- drops/swept -- etc.? and perhaps most importantly -- would you
buy/build it again?

I'm super interested and sorry to clog up people's inboxes.

Cheers,

Robert

[RBW] Experiences with Atlantis

2020-01-05 Thread Robert Gardner
Hi all --

So, I'm thinking about a touring/gravel/all-road'y type bike I can put
gigantic tires on, load up if I want, or not. I'm not a small person.

I'm also thinking about waiting for Crust to re-up their line, but I have a
Quickbeam and a Roadini and I smile every time I get on either one of them
(for very different reasons).

So, I'm predisposed towards building something I can ride from DC to
Montreal if I wanted to, hitting every gravel road on the way.

Who has ridden an Atlantis? Who has toured on one? I'd appreciate your
impressions -- AND -- if someone can talk me out of it (maybe I should by a
Homer)

Appreciate your experiences here all -- feel free to ping on list or off.

Happy New Year --

Robert

Re: [RBW] Re: MUSA Pants

2019-12-20 Thread Robert Gardner
Got the new MUSA pants yesterday.

For reference, I am 6"2, 220ish pounds, stocky build and the Large's fit
fantastic. Yes they are more snug than past iterations, but that guarantees
I will basically live in them. Super comfy out of the box, they go with
everything and haven't "slipped" down my bottom when I rode in them today
(unlike, say, the Patagonia baggies pants that I have which end up in a
special place if I try and ride in them).

Also, the light stretch is very clutch.

After one day, strong recommend.

[RBW] 1x11 on a Roadini?

2019-11-25 Thread Robert Gardner
Is anyone running a 1x11 on a roadini? Thinking of building one for some
centuries and/or light rando rides. Wondering if anyone has done this and has
any tips.

Yes, I know, compact doubles and/or 2x is kind of standard. Let me live my life
people! 

Thanks ahead of time —
