I have an extra fork from my 56cm Sam Hillborne with canti brake posts.
It's orange, but creamsicle orange.

[RBW] Re: How hot is too hot?

2017-07-18 Thread Ryan Thompson
Tim,

I just got back from visiting family in KC and while I was there rode 120
miles of the Katy/Rock Island Spur trail from Columbia to around Pleasant
Hill in that heat. I thought I was prepared but it was brutal. It
reminded me of working on the family farm in July while bringing in Hay,
and all you wanted to do was jump in the creek to cool off at the end of
the day. The key for me was to ensure I have enough water and take
multiple breaks to cool down.

Now that I'm back in DC, the weather isn't much better.

to camp so I was thinking of an inn to inn ride. We may be flexible on the
camping thing I would just need to bring more stuff. I was thinking 40-60
miles a day considering we are flatlanders, so depending on the elevation
mileage may decrease. Trip would be taking place the last week of June or
first week of July (I know, not a lot of time to plan). I wouldn't mind
incorporating some off road trials as long as it's not to technical.

Riv content: we plan on riding our Sam Hillborne and Cheviot.

Thanks,
Ryan

[RBW] Re: Hubbuh Racks

2017-05-24 Thread Ryan Thompson
Daniel,

I have my HHH and started the assembly process last weekend but wasn't able
to finish; it is a big job ;-). I do plan on installing Mark's rack on the
front and a Blackburn EX-1 rack on the rear for our daughters Topeak bike
seat. The only thing I noticed was I needed to pick up some M6 bolts for
the rear eyelets, but the rack seems like it will fit with some persuasion.
I have a spare Nitto big back rack but haven't tried to mock it up.

[RBW] Rivendell Silver Crankarm torque value?

2017-05-24 Thread Ryan Thompson
The only reason I ask is I've recently had to replace a NDS crankarm from a
Sugino XD2 on my Cheviot due to it constantly loosening and me constantly
tightening it. On the new crankarm, I lightly greased the spindle and
tighten the crankarm to 35 n/m, which seemed really snug.

On to the Silver cranks on my HHH, I really want to get the installation
right so I don't end up screwing up another crankarm.

Does anyone have the mfg suggested torque value or should I just call Mark
at Riv?

Thanks,
Ryan

[RBW] 60cm Cheviot Owner Questions: Which Hitch-mounted Bike Racks Work & Largest Tire Width With Fenders

2017-05-22 Thread Ryan Thompson
2. Saris Freedom 2 or 4. This is the only rack I've found which can securely
hold my bikes and not damage the fenders. It also fits our 60cm Cheviot. I've
taken this rack and my Rivs on multiple cross country trips and never worry
about the bikes.

3. I currently have Soma C-lines, 38c, on the Chev which gives plenty of
fender clearance but have also run Marathon Supremes, 42c, without an issue. I
have 44c Soma Shikoros on my Sam Hillborne with fenders but there is very
little clearance between the tire and fender.

Tim,

An another option may be Soma's C-Line (700x38c) or one of their Shikoro
tires which are supple but have some flat protection. I have the c-lines
on my Cheviot and the Shikoros on my Sam. I've used both for commuting and
a short three day tour on the C canal trail (surface like the Katy trail)
with no flats.

Good luck on your tour.

[RBW] Re: Today's commute

2017-04-25 Thread Ryan Thompson
I hear you about the TdF wannabes which normally don't bother me when they
speed on non-peak trail times. Just this weekend, when it wasn't raining,
I took the family out for a slow ride to the park and it just blows me away
when people pass without 1) signaling and 2) at much higher speeds. Even
when I decide to ride my go fast bike on the trail I slow down
significantly when passing other riders, especially parents carrying or
riding with kids, and pedestrians.

I think we need to organize a Riv ride this spring for all the local riders
in the DMV.

[RBW] Re: FS/FT- 23" Stumpjumper, F/F & extras -$225-

2017-02-09 Thread Ryan Thompson
This might just fit the bill for a build I want to do for my younger
brother. He's taller than I am at 6'1'' and I can straddle a typical 22"
ATB from the same era so I think a 23" wouldn't be a stretch for him. Do
you have any idea what the standover height was with a 2.3 tire?

Thanks,

2016-12-22 Thread Ryan Thompson
Ken,

Thanks for the feedback. I also plan on using our tandem on the paved
trails around NoVA and DC but we live in the "hills" of Arlington so a
triple is a must. I think I'll use a set of SLX rapid fire
shifters/derailleurs and a ten speed cassette out back.

This is our first tandem and my wife is a masher and I'm more of a
spinner.This should be fun.

Dave mentioned they might have a Silver crank available but it may also not
happen in time. I was also thinking about standard Sugino triple cranks
but this is our first tandem and I've done zero research on gear options.

We also chose orange which I was second guessing since I already have an
Orange Sam Hillborne, Cheviot, and road bike. Oh well.

[RBW] Re: An opportunistic Sunday

2016-08-29 Thread Ryan Thompson
Tony,

Great write-up and sorry to hear about your tubeless trouble. The only
bike I have currently running tubeless is my mountain bike. It's equipped
with a set of Easton wheels with a UST bead profile paired with WTB tires
that are UST compatible. However, it still makes me nervous as I not very
diligent at checking the sealant every couple of months, cleaning, then
reapplying.

I also share your exciment when my wife grants me the opportunity for
riding on the weekend while she watches the kids. Since our youngest is
now 17 months we're able to do a lot of family rides, but lately I've it's
been too hot for us to ride the Arlington loop. So on Sunday I took the
opportunity to ride my mountain bike at Fountainhead Park, and that was a
workout.

[RBW] WTT: Brooks C15 Carved for C17

2016-08-23 Thread Ryan Thompson
I'm looking to trade my slightly used Brooks C15 carved for a C17. I
purchased this one on eBay, tried it but its just too narrow. Would prefer
black or slate.

[RBW] Re: Rat Trap Pass: reviews? impressions? poetic waxings?

2016-08-19 Thread Ryan Thompson
I running a set of standard RTPs on a 86' Schwinn Cimarron and love them.
No flats in 300 miles and I run them at 35/40psi, but maybe I should lower
that a bit. The bike is set up with dirt drop bars and I consistently
return a higher average speed on my commute as compared to my Sam Hillborne
with Soma C-lines.

I have a Cheviot, which has the same brake setup as your Sam, and use
Mark's Nitto Rack with a Wald basket. Can't go wrong as the rack was
specifically developed for Rivendell's with caliper brakes.

[RBW] Re: Curious: Betty Foy vs. Cheviot

2016-06-13 Thread Ryan Thompson
Jon,

My current Sam, 56cm, is set up with albastache bars and serves as my
almost daily commuter so it's racked and is running the same drivetrain
plus tires (soma c-lines) as the Chev. By comparing my commute
times (about 12 miles one-way) the Sam is consistently faster and feels
more nimble. The difference could be mostly attributed to the more
aggressive position so it may not be the best side by side comparison. It
is my favorite ride of the three Rivs I own. I'm hoping to acquire a
Atlantis or Hunqapillar in the new future and I'm not sure about the longer
chain stays of future models

[RBW] Re: Yepp Mini on Rivendell experiences?

2016-03-19 Thread Ryan Thompson
Hey Dave, I love riding with the kids and use a combination of a Xtracycle
free radical and the Bobike Mini City up front. I'll echo what others have
said about the lack of space between the saddle and child seat, so I have
to run the saddle low enough to place a toe on the ground while sitting.
It's not ideal and makes riding a little more difficult especially hauling
this bike loaded up hills.

If the shifters are the Microshift BS-M10 then I would be interested if
they're still available.

Hey Tony it was nice to meet you as well especially on the first ride on
the new-to-me Hillborne. I sold my previous 58 Sage Green Sam because of
the lack of stand over clearance and have been on the constant look out for
a 56cm since then.

Phil – that was me. Two Rivs in one day!

Really liking the new Albastache bars too.

[RBW] Re: security

2015-03-29 Thread Ryan Thompson
Like you I find myself choosing not to ride my beater bikes and instead
riding my Sam and Cheviot everywhere. I usually use only my cable
Kyrptonite lock around the frame and rear wheel when possible. I think
there is an issue with bike theft where I live (DC Metro) it seems to be
people are stealing bikes left unattended on porches or cars versus bikes
locked up in front of the corner store. The bigger issue are thieves
stealing lights and saddle bags which has happened to me a few times while
the bike is parked.

I monkeyed with them to make them nice, but the Atlantis is simply much,

 So what to do?

Riv recommends Pitlocks for the front wheel and seat post in conjunction
 with an Abus cable.

 What does this list do?

I'm not going to leave the bike outside overnight, or in sketchy
situations. I will park at the library, Trader Joe's, the grocery store,
etc... mostly public places with sidewalk traffic.

 Advice?
