[RBW] Re: Need primer on dyno lighting

2022-09-01 Thread Sam McDermott
I think Peter White's webpage is pretty useful (for the most part...) --
see for example https://www.peterwhitecycles.com/plight.php -- and there's
often very useful photos of small bits if you poke around more. His labor
prices are extremely good for the quality of his work, and if you're
looking for a new wheel along with a light, it's a great one-stop-shop.
He'll talk you through all your choices on the phone in case you're
uncertain about anything.

But the short answer to your first set of questions is: SON hubs are widely
agreed to be the very best, but they come at a cost premium. There's
several manufacturers that, these days, are only very slightly below that
in quality (including Shutter Precision, Shimano, and Panasonic; I feel
like I'm forgetting one more). For lights, it seems like the Busch and
Muller IQ-X is a fav (I love mine), but there's a couple others that belong
in the very top category as well (Schmidt Edelux II, Sinewave Cycles
Beacon), and I don't have personal experience to compare (I'm sure others
here do). For rear lights (which can be linked easily to a front light),
the Busch and Muller Toplight Line Plus is, I believe, the clear number one.

Good luck and enjoy!

[RBW] Re: Best dynamo headlight for road riding

2022-07-30 Thread Sam McDermott
Another vote for the IQ-X. It's terrifically bright, well-shaped,
well-constructed, and the standlight is quite bright and long-lasting.

A much cheaper option is a Herrmans
(eg https://www.modernbike.com/herrmans-headlights), which I tried
recently. I have an MR-4. It's actually rather bright and decently shaped,
but the construction is shabby (the lens pops off entirely at the slightest
provocation) and the capacitor must be tiny: the light flickers in a
terribly distracting way at low speeds, and the standlight is very weak.
The flickering problem is bad enough that I switch the light off when I
have to walk it more than a few feet. But if you're "going" a lot more than
you're wheeling (or riding below 5 MPH), it's a good value.

[RBW] Re: Which Dyno Hub?

2022-07-26 Thread Sam McDermott
I got a wheel built by Peter White last year, and we discussed my use
cases, which sound similar to yours, on the phone. He said the only reason
to get a SON was if I was commuting rain or shine in a cold, wet
environment, and otherwise the Shimano or Panasonic (who not-so-long-ago
bought out a production facility that had previously been branded Sanyo, I
believe) will cut the mustard. I had a 6-bolt disc that I wanted to use, so
I went with the Panasonic instead of Shimano, and it's been everything I
hoped for. Only a few hundred miles on it so far, but it sounds consistent
with what others have said, and I'm happy with the >$100 I saved.

[RBW] Re: New Dynamo Wheel Day

2022-05-14 Thread Sam McDermott
Agree on both the IQ-X and Toplight Line Plus lights, they're fantastic.

I have a cheapo Herrmans M4 Black on a different bike. It throws a lot of
light in a decent pattern, but it is _much_ worse at low speeds -- the
capacitor must be a much lower rating, since it flickers very distractingly
when I walk my bike, for example, and it is noticeable if I am riding at
very low speed. The standlight is also not quite as bright, pointing to the
same issue, though that is less of a concern to me.

[RBW] WTB setback seatpost 27.2 (and a front qr skewer)

2022-03-06 Thread Sam McDermott
Hi everyone,

Before going to town on stem / hb combinations to dial in fit on my
(now-back-in-Chicago) Rom, I was thinking of trying a more setback
seatpost. Since this is for fit, any condition will do. I prefer silver if
possible, but not picky. Size is 27.2mm. Does anyone have one of these
lying around?

Also, my only front quick release skewer is all rusted. Does anyone have a
spare, non-rust division? Black or silver are fine.

Thanks!
