[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-20 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
As a former Appaloosa owner, I'm a little disappointed to see the
extra-long chainstays and 6° TT come to the Atlantis. Although the Joe is
billed as an "all-arounder," IME that is quite a subjective term. I found
climbing unwieldy without a sizable front load (especially on dirt), and
with the long top tube, drop bars are not as feasible for some riders using
Riv's suggested sizing (myself included). I would consider the existing
Atlantis geo to be more all-rounder, a balance of traditional stack and
reach numbers with the mid-length chainstays.

[RBW] Re: Hunq with rack and v brakes?

2017-11-30 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
I have a Joe with stock v brakes. The brake cable between the calipers is
in the way of the mounting hole in the center of the fork crown. I am
currently using a Soma rack with a mounting tab that hangs over the cable
and is bent into place, although the LBS set it up in such a way that the
rack is now slightly crooked.

Sounds like Riv has put a disclaimer about V-brakes on the 32F
page: https://www.rivbike.com/products/nitto-mini-front-rack-32f-20020

Probably depends a lot on the V-brakes you're looking at and the height of
the fork above the brake mounts.

[RBW] FS - Updated - Large Gray Saddlesack &/or R14 (No Tombstone) Top Rack

2017-09-26 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
*Deleted my old thread so I could include the R14 in the subject*

I moved to SF last week and am reworking my Joe.

Gray Saddlesack has seen regular use since March-ish. It's the new type
with the fabric mounting "bracket." The grey fabric is slightly lighter and
flexier than the olive fabric. Bag is in good condition. Has some greasy
bits on the bracket and a curious leather scratch on the dowel rod sleeve.
The scratch is surface level. I sanded down the edges of the dowel in case
that was the cause. I think the dowel might be too short for the bag.

R14 Rack has seen some wear, I am the second (or third) owner. The longer
struts are cut just a cm or two, should work fine for most builds. Shorter
struts are bent in half. Could easily have another life in the right hands.

[RBW] FS - Large Grey Saddlesack

2017-09-21 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
I moved to SF last week and am reworking my Joe. I enjoyed having this
large Saddlesack but find it unwieldy for regularly taking on & off and too
precious to leave on the bike in the city. Swapping to a smaller QR
saddlebag and front basket setup.

Bag has seen regular use since March-ish. It's the new type with the fabric
mounting "bracket." The grey fabric is slightly lighter and flexier than
the olive fabric.

Bag is in good condition. Has some greasy bits on the bracket and a curious
leather scratch on the dowel rod sleeve. The scratch is surface level. I
sanded down the edges of the dowel in case that was the cause. I think the
dowel might be too short for the bag.

[RBW] Appaloosa tire?

I fit 29x2.1 slicks with a 65mm PB fender. Fender was quite snug in the fork

[RBW] Re: why so many joe's up for sale?

2017-08-03 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
I duly concede to Bill that my comparisons may have been over-generalized.

FWIW, I've ridden an unloaded LHT (rented for a week in Portland) and
thought it was plenty fun, and granted it was two years ago but I would say
it was very similar to riding my Joe now.

Back to the topic, and I'm pretty sure this has been said before, but Rivs
have pretty good resale value, especially a newer one with presumably less
miles. So when a new shiny thing comes up, the best bang for your buck can
sometimes feel like the easiest way to go, even if it means selling a
pretty bike like a Joe.

[RBW] Re: why so many joe's up for sale?

2017-08-03 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
A lot, maybe not most, of people buy Rivs sight unseen. And because most people
have only ever ridden bikes with shorter wheelbases, it's not necessarily clear
exactly how a longer one will affect handling, especially because everyone's
bodies and abilities are different. I would say it all ultimately depends on
exactly how and where you ride the bike, so I wouldn't write someone off for
trying something new.

As for the Joe being the first and only bike of its kind, I'd say the Joe is a
nicer, upright version of the LHT so I wouldn't really make that claim at all.
I've attached some photos of the LHT I'm thinking of here.

[RBW] Hunqapillar or Appaloosa?

2017-08-02 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
I tried both on my visit to HQ, and ended up with an Appaloosa almost entirely
because it was cheaper. Not that I couldn't save up for the Hunq but it's more
money than I'm comfortable sinking into a bike at my station in life. But the
Hunq had something in the ride quality that was doing it for me. It reminded me
of my Bridgestone MB, which is an amazingly comfy bike in my mind.

Worth noting that if you are a taller person, you won't be able to hop on the
650b train on an Appaloosa. Hunqs can be ordered up to 59 size with 650b
wheels. I ride 29x2.1 on my Joe and it's is a lot of tire to be pushing around
everywhere I go. Like I said, I really like riding 26" on my MB-5.

[RBW] Re: So many Rivs on the chopping block

2017-06-21 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
Someone on the list recently was talking about pricing, with respect to the
fact that Riv has been in business for many years now and produced many
bikes, increasing the supply and somewhat regulating resale prices. I think
the same increase in supply could be a big factor in this apparent uptick
in FS bikes. It's pretty common for avid cyclists to sell and buy new bikes
at a regular interval, and although Rivs are nice there's always that shiny
new thing just out of reach.

Also disc brakes are the literal worst

JUST KIDDING

But seriously I've had terrible luck with discs and won't go back until
there are drastic overhauls of available mechanical disc systems (if that
ever happens).

[RBW] Re: Bike computer

2017-06-13 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
I enjoy using a Pebble watch + MapMyRide or Strava. The watch automatically
pairs with the apps and gives time/speed/distance data. Not always super
convenient (or safe) to look at while moving, but also allows me to read
text messages/notifications and keep my phone stashed away. With the same
sentiment as some others on this thread, I'm really only interested in
tracking my routes for record keeping and for curiosity and this setup
worked great for that.

Unfortunately, Pebble no longer exists as a company so software support is
unclear into the future. My watch still works fine and you can pick one up
for cheap from various online retailers.

[RBW] PSA - Last chance on extra-balloony 700x55 Big Bens up at RivBike.com

2017-06-12 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
I am no longer in the market for these (ended up getting a pair of Maxxis
Torch) but for fans of the Big Ben, just noticed Riv has a few left of the
now-discontinued 700x55 size, just a little bit bigger than the 700x50. I
wanted these for my Joe but had trouble finding this largest size (I didn't
see them on the Riv website at the time, for whatever reason).

[RBW] Re: Fenders - worth the safety risks? Rethinking my fender use.

2017-06-02 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
After a couple battles with toe overlap, none of which ended in total
disaster but still troubling, I decided to postpone my fender experience
and swapped out slicks and fenders for Smart Sams on my Joe. I am pleased
with this decision. Maybe I'll take any intermittent rainy weather we get
here in Austin as a sign to take a break from the bike, and the fenders
didn't do much to keep the Texas dust off my drivetrain. I'll save them
if/when I move to a wetter climate.

OT but IMO, a lugged bike with knobby tires gets me going in a certain way.

[RBW] Re: Fenders - worth the safety risks? Rethinking my fender use.

2017-05-26 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
I want to like fenders, I really do. I know they're practical and all. But
I also really want to run knobbies from time to time. And even though I
have slicks on my Joe, they are 53mm wide and the 65mm wide fenders are
just a lot to contend with. And so far these fenders have done a lot to
distract from riding, with all the swaying and rattling and spooky noises.
Maybe if I end up getting a bike with narrower tires that I'm less likely
to ride off into the woods on, I'll get a nice set of metal fenders and
have them tuned up by a fender whisperer.

[RBW] Re: Fenders - worth the safety risks? Rethinking my fender use.

2017-05-26 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
I recently put some plastic PB fenders on and had some of the same
reservations, especially since I'm in central Texas where it has only
recently (last couple years) seemed like rain is in the forecast more
often. I mostly got them so I wouldn't have to wash my bike after rainy
rides and to avoid the dreaded muddbutt, but now I'm wondering if it's
worth it, especially because this is my do-it-all bike. And when it rains
here during the summer, there's not much I can do to stay dry that won't
cause me to sweat through my clothes anyway. My usual tactic for getting
through the rain is to wear a cycling cap, grin and bear it.

The PB fenders are kind of frustrating because the metal bracket that holds
the fender stays to the fender bends down a good centimeter directly
towards the wheel. To stop it from hitting the tire when going over bumps
or going at speed, I've had to pull the fender even further from the tire
which then makes it easier for the whole thing to sway and perpetuates the
problem.

If I get rid of the fenders, I plan on finding some corrugated cardboard
sign (the coated political yard sign kind) and sticking it between my
saddlebag and rear rack to act as a frugal Ass Savers (also Ass Savers
don't keep muck from getting all over and up into the bag). If that works
okay I might upgrade to some hard plastic vinyl or something.

[RBW] Re: WTB: XL/XXL trail bike

2017-05-16 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
My advice, if you haven't already scouted out the trails you want to ride
and concluded otherwise for yourself, is to pick up a beater 80s or 90s MTB
and try the trails before you invest in a fully rigid trail bike for
Austin. Most (all?) of the fun trails are full of limestone. It's rough on
a rigid (some might call it an acquired taste). If you're an experienced
rider it's not as big of an issue but as a beginner MTBer I took this route

I ended up getting a fat hardtail, but have since sold it. Mountain biking

[RBW] Tires for Joe Appaloosa

2017-05-07 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
I ride Maxxis Torch, 700x53. They are fat and provide lots of squish at 120tpi.
Could even work with B65 fenders. Have been proving themselves to be rather
prone to flats, however. Little to no flat protection if something works its
way between the treads.

[RBW] WTT Choco for Albatross Alu

2017-05-02 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
Sorry to spam the list with errant WTT posts but I had great success with
my last one. I have a set of Choco Norm bars (heat-treated aluminum, 55cm,
25.4 clamp area) that came with my Appaloosa. I prefer the look and
slightly less sweepy sweep of the Albatross – and the Choco comes back just
a wee bit too much for me. I swapped the whole setup for Bullmoose bars but
now that the Chocos are on my MB-5, I realize I enjoy the relative hand
position more.

The bars are near new but have a small surface scratch under the grip from
some stubborn ESI grips. Not super picky about the Albatross bars
condition.

[RBW] FS / WTT - Nitto R14 w/ tombstone for Nitto R14 w/o tombstone

2017-04-24 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
I was impatient and preemptively ordered a pretty R14 with a tombstone from
Japan, only to find that it 100% won't work with my large Saddlesack + Joe
Appaloosa.

Open to trade it with someone who has the non-tombstone version and wishes
they had otherwise. Perhaps we could just trade the platform if you've
already got struts cut for your bike.

Or I'd just sell it, $100 + shipping costs.

[RBW] Re: 700 x 45-50 options

2017-04-17 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
Au contrare, Riv has these B65 fenders (albeit not as long as some other
models), built up on an Appaloosa in the product photo:

https://www.rivbike.com/collections/fenders/products/sks-esge-commuter-ii-silver-fenders-b65-700c-29er

Riv's description lists these as up to 55mm tires, which means they would
likely work with the Torches.

[RBW] ISO/WTB/WTT - New-ish Large Olive Saddlesack

2017-04-13 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
Pretty narrow target to hit here but I'm on the lookout for a Large 2016
Saddlesack (with the non-leather bottom mounting) in the olive color. Just
got off the phone with Riv and they said there *should* be more on the way
at some point in the future but if someone has one they are unhappy with
for whatever reason, let's talk!

I use a large Swift Zeitgeist now, which is quite a bit smaller, but
willing to trade it if that's what you're into.

I have a Zeitgeist saddle bag in the large size and love it. Bought it with
my winnings from my first and only foray into a paid fantasy football
league. It's well made and has served me well.

Funny you post that @ultraromance bag, I have been waiting on that one. He
has a pre-order list you can email him about. The Zeitgeist is great but I
wish it was juuust bit bigger so I could fit everything I need for a
commute without relying on panniers or adding a basket. I mean, the
Zeitgeist already quite a big saddle bag, but I'm looking for an un-leather
bag in the category of the medium or large Saddlesack, both of which are
bigger than the Z.

Re: [RBW] N = ? or How do you decide how many bikes to own?

2017-04-04 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
I, like Tim, have settled on a one-bike approach, plus one. So not really
like Tim at all. I have a new Appaloosa that replaced a Surly Straggler as
my do-it-all bike. I had a hardtail fat bike but sold it as I didn't really
enjoy riding any trails tougher than I could ride on my Straggler. And I've
got an MB-5 as my #2 sitting in the garage, set up as a bar bike for
running to the grocery or locking up around town. I've had more bikes in
the stable but really enjoy the simplicity of the one (plus one) approach.

Also worth noting that there are now two Smart Sam tire treads. The older is

[RBW] Re: New (to my wife) Betty Foy

2017-03-10 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
The red housing, bungee, and pedals are a nice match and a great contrast
against with the blue. Looks so good!

[RBW] cool new geometry section on rivbike.com

2017-03-09 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
A little bummed the standover heights for Joe aren't listed, if only for the
reason that I've tried two of those and would like to know how their
calculations match to my fit.

[RBW] Re: Rivet Pearl or C17 Carved

2017-03-05 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
If there's an opportunity to try out the Rivet I'd say go for it. I have a
carved C17 and while it's probably the best vegan saddle I've come across,
it's far from as magic as I would have hoped it to be.

Re: [RBW] Silver or green Joe?

2017-03-02 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
I, too, have a hard time picturing what the silver would look like as a full
frame. Especially around the lugs. Could be rad or could be just fine.

[RBW] Re: FS-Joe Appaloosa

2017-03-01 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
Gah. If this were a month or two from now I'd be taking you up on this
offer but I need to clear out the stable first. I rode a 55 at Riv a couple
weeks ago and it was a little cramped for me. Quite like the v1 colors over
the new batch, although they didn't have an exact sample of the new green
color in the shop at the time. If you don't mind me asking, what are your
PBH and height? I was measured at an 87 which I found hard to believe and
they didn't have the 58 in stock to try out.
