Re: [RBW] Nitto Andrews R50 Quick Release
I’ve used it for years. In my usage, the bag sits lower. Maybe 1-2cm? This with a Brooks B17. I have used the strap technique successfully on some rackless occasions to keep a bag from pressing on my fender. Surprising to me was the realization that while the QR feature was nice, the fact that it provides a handle for the bag was at least as important on my daily bike-train-walk commute. An old-school SaddleSack Medium or Large, a load-stopped Nitto rack, and the R50 meant I never had to buckle/unbuckle a thing but could haul substantial loads without worry, both on and off the bike. [RBW] Re: Building out New Old Stock 2009 Sam Hillborne
Sorry I’m so late in seeing this. If you are still interested in any alternatives for managing your Country Bag, check out the wonderful stand-offs available from Acorn Bags. So inexpensive that it probably is worth it just to avoid making it yourself, let alone for the Acorn quality of the thing. Ironically, I was out riding around on my 2010 Hillborne Saturday night, with my green tweed Nigel Snythe Country Bag resting gently on my VO fender. What that bag lacks in efficiency it makes up for in fancy and fun. Yours, Thomas Lynn Skean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. To anyone who’s serviced any pedal this seems stupid I’m sure, but... How do you get at the bearings on a Grip King? [RBW] silver crankset questions
Hi, all. I’m getting a Silver 38/24 Wide/low double. I’m uncertain if the 38 will be enough gear for me forever, so I’m wondering what my options are if proves problematic at some point. (It won’t be a problem right away, but it might become a problem if I get into better shape and decide to go faster than I currently do.) Has anyone tried replacing the 38 with a 39 or 40? If so, Did it exceed the “protection” of the guard? Did it shift reliably with the 24? (I’m presuming either a 39 or a 40 would shift reliably with a 26.) What derailer are you using? Any experiences using a Silver Wide/low double with an alpina-d triple derailer or with a Shimano CX70 double would be greatly appreciated. To date, the original GrabSack is the only RBW bag I never loved. Closure, size, hang, strappage... all were just off for me. Jumbo Grabby looks much more appealing. Re: [RBW] do these bars look too high?
Them there bars is fine. And if one prefers the stem/bar interface to have a more traditional angle, one can find Nitto Technomic stems with a 280mm stalk. I would love the bar height of a 64cm Sam but not its standover or top tube length. So I have tall stems on my 60cm Sams. I think, when my ship comes in (scheduled to happen shortly after climate change hits hades), I'll order my RBW custom by saying "I'd like a 61.25cm Sam Hillborne". Joe Bell paint, of course. [RBW] MUSA Pants?
Last thing I recall was that the entire MUSA program was being reconsidered. That was earlier in the summer I think. But as far as I can tell only the pants and non-black knickers have become unavailable since. So I'm hopeful that what sounded "dire" earlier was my misreading the signals and in fact the absence of pants and/or knickers has been a seasonal thing. However, if/when the pants come back it would not surprise me if they are only in black and/or cost >$100. Neither would be great but both would be understandable IMHO. Hi, all. Well, I'm no longer hopeful. Now I see several of the "still available" (i. e. still on the website) are in fact almost gone. That leads me to conclude the MUSA line is heading for "hiatus" at least, as RBW indicated earlier. I'm glad I have at least one pair of knickers that fit. For long pants I shall make do with my XXL pants I guess. Are there actual alternatives out there? [RBW] non-destructive complete removal of tag in MUSA moleskin shirt - anyone know how?
The tag in my MUSA moleskin shirt is slightly annoying. But it sure looks to me like ripping enough seam to completely get rid of the tag in my MUSA moleskin shirt will completely open a section of the shirt's side seam. Getting rid of part of the tag seems as though it would simply leave you with ragged edges of tag which would be more annoying than the complete tag. Does anyone have experience removing the tag without creating a hole in the seam? If so, how was it done? [RBW] Re: non-destructive complete removal of tag in MUSA moleskin shirt - anyone know how?
I'm afraid we're talking about different tags or shirts here. The only red thread on this shirt is holding on the buttons (and not all that well, but that's a separate issue :)). My shirt has two tags of which I'm aware. One is the red/white/blue MUSA tag, and it does not touch me when I'm wearing the shirt. The other is the "content tag" sewn onto (into?) the interior of the left side seam of the shirt's trunk. (Interestingly, onto the tag is stitched the "spare button", held on to the tag with red thread.) It is the content tag which I can feel when I'm wearing the shirt and which I'd like to remove. It may be (and I would hope that it is) that the stitching holding the content tag onto the shirt is separate from shirt's structural stitching. But it sure doesn't look that way to me. Congratulations! I ride mine all over the place... road, trail, 1 miles or 40 miles, with all kinds of handlebars (da Vinci splitters are wonderful). [RBW] Nitro F-15 and RK front bag supporters
I have a Nitto F-15 but am curious... do the Nitto F-15 and the RK front bag supporters basically support the same bags? I'd guess that the Sackville BarSack may not work as-is on the RK since its anchor is a leather wrap around the middle of the supporter's frame near the handlebar, which would seem problematic with the RK's handlebar adapter. But bags like the Ostrich F-516 or the Berthoud GB192 or even the old Baggins Boxy bag (I think that was what it was called, anyway) sure seem like they'd work the RK setup. The dimensions of the RK's frame and the F-15's frame are very similar. Anyone with any experience using both to share? [RBW] encomium of SaddleSack Medium as a daily commute bag
I typically ride my bike a short distance (1-5 miles) to a train, then a train 40-50 minutes into work. Recently I've settled into using my SaddleSack Medium as my daily commute bag. On a normal day it's pretty empty; lunch, hat, minimal gear don't really challenge it. (I store tube/tools/etc separately.) But it also swallows up rain cape splats, additional snacks/tea/coffee, gloves, extra layers, general cargo, and still has room for a laptop when needed. The side pockets are great for wallet/phone/glasses/keys, which remain mid-ride accessible. In the past few weeks the ACW mug has become my go-to drinking vessel while on the train. It's just the right size to allow me to control temperature better than my large Klean Kanteen source container. And it better supports actual open-air sipping, which somehow has more appeal than sippy-top containers when I'm seated stably on a train. And it dries well hanging from the SaddleSack. The Nitto saddlebag grip is of course a vital component of the system. (Need to find a silver acorn for this one.) https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-aZa9RU854vs/VZ6bv-V0yQI/AO4/sO2EkcApkNg/s1600/SSMACW.jpg I'm glad I was able to score a tan SaddleSack. [RBW] Re: Bars on the Hunqapillar
I do this same thing with my two Hillbornes. Though in my case I confess I tend to use the Bosco and Albatross bars most of the time (80%). I've used my Moustache every now and then and I've only rarely used the Noodles and Bullmoose over the past year or two. Even with my limited exploitation of the variations, this is a great way to operate. After all, people with n+1 bikes surely go through phases of riding mn of those bikes most of the time. Being bar-switch-capable is a cheap (and space-saving!) way of having some freedom of choice. Switching bars really does yield something of a different bike feel. DaVinci splitters are great! Shoji's note has brought to mind how much fun it is to whip that Bullmoose around. Definitely going to take some decent rides with those in the coming days. Probably take me 15-20mins to switch this time; I think I've shuffled derailers, cables, and maybe the rear wheel since last time. Yours, Thomas Lynn Skean On Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 9:50:27 AM UTC-5, Shoji Takahashi wrote: I've set up my Hunqapillar with all of 'em: Noodles (48cm, 10-cm stem) Albatross (12-cm stem) Bullmoose Moustache (7-cm stem) I use cable splitters for quick changes of handlebars. Takes ~10 min to swap from one to another. (Takashi, who's also on this group with a Hunqapillar, is also a bar swapper. I think he uses down-tube shifters, which would vastly simplify swapping.) I chose a smaller Hunqapillar (with my PBH, the recommendation is 48 or 51-- I went with 48), as I wanted a drop-bar. Albatross is fine on it, but I could probably use a longer stem. Bullmoose is good, but I think the head tube is higher than I want. My favorites are moustache and noodles for this bike. But I swap bars somewhat regularly, because it's almost like having 4 different bikes. Some pics of the different set ups: https://www.flickr.com/photos/stakx/sets/72157644332271299 Happy riding! [RBW] Re: chainrings... middle vs outer question
That's the sort of experience I like to hear! I'm satisfied with no outer ring at all. So I'm covered there. It sounds like I'll be fine with a 32T/46T setup in general, presuming I don't screw something up putting it all together and adjusting the front derailer. I really like the Sugino cranks, so I'll be happy have one on the Bike Friday. It gives me yet another bit of common kit between the Bike Friday and the Hillbornes, sort of a spare part bin. I've already set up the Bike Friday to be like the Hillbornes in several ways: B17 saddle, Bosco-like bars (narrower) with bar-ends-on-thumbies, grip king pedals, schmidt dynamo lighting, nitto F-15, NR-50, and pannier rack... things on the way include love levers, motolites, and the sugino crank. if there were a way to add a double-top-tube I'd probably do it just to finish it off! It'll never ride exactly like the Hillbornes. I don't know how I'd fake the extra rotational inertia or narrower tires or controlled-ness (my Friday's stem riser does move about a bit). But it's already close enough to be the second most comfortable bike I've ever ridden. And, unlike the Hillbornes, I can take it on the train in rush hour, put it in my car quite easily, or travel with it on megabus. Now I'll never be without a multi-mile-capable super-comfortable bike! I set up a 36-48-58 set on a 110/74 crankset, in my case a Suntour XC Pro. Using the Sheldon Brown online gear calculator, this gave me a match to my standard bikes setup. TA sells (or sold, haven't checked recently) a 36 tooth 74 bcd ring; the largest you can fit on that bolt pattern, I understand. I paired it with a Shimano SG-X outer 48t, the one one they sold on their 110/74 MTB setups in the 90s. The new outer is a Sugino flat 58 tooth ring. Using bar end shifters, and Shimano 9-speed chain, if all shifts very well with a Campagnolo triple front derailleur. I'm using the version they sold for their 10-tooth jump 30-40-50 cranksets. I've found these particular fronts to be really versatile, they seem to work a little better under load and over a broad range than Shimano's road front triples. I think any good ramped outer from Shimano, better yet a TA Zephyr, will make a good middle ring. It's doing essentially the same job in the middle, picking up and dropping the chain to the smaller ring next to it. The question will be whether you are satisfied with a flat outer ring. Those numbers do seem satisfactory. I certainly don't have any precise measurements of my own. Perhaps if I do get another dynamo wheel I'll go with a lower-drag (smaller wheel) version. My understanding is that the current larger wheel dynamo output specs are something of a legacy from the halogen light era. [RBW] Re: Intelligent design dynamo hubs
Hah! There was a time when the ability to charge my tricorder (for me, an iPhone) or its yet-to-be-produced-analog (precision USB-powered coffee grinder? piezo-electric iced coffee cooler? mobile Bitcoin mine?) would definitely have been a plus. But I have after much time and mileage come to appreciate the simpler things (which actually means I'm too old, tired, and lazy to embrace such complexities). Also, battery life on the iPhone has improved! :) At any rate, it seems my low speed per se probably isn't reason to eschew the lower-drag dynamos. Oh well. Staggering around after an unpaved 300K is not quite fast enough to get out of the flicker zone. The hubs with more poles are better for high-draw use (so those of us who charge their tricorders and other electronic paraphernalia while tootling along) and bikepacking rally riders who push their steeds up long, babyheaded singletrack climbs at night, though most of those I know use battery lights to supplement their hub generator and recharge them with the lights off during the day. Re: [RBW] Re: Intelligent design dynamo hubs
Well, it's clear to me that the drag-vs-light remains a consideration in choosing between an SP SV-8 and SP PV-8. Even with my SP PV-8 hub (and my SON28, for that matter), there have been a few occasions when I wished my light were brighter at a relatively slow speed when it was in fact brighter at a higher speed. That is, I know there are times I'd prefer it reached higher output sooner. I believe I'm in a minority but I know I'm not alone. Even if one ignores device-charging (in which I'm uninterested), the use of a halogen headlight is not the *only* case where the higher output would be nicer. Right now the absolute drag I have *is never a problem* for me and the slow-speed light output *is*, even if only a small, rare problem. I use a dyno tail light. Some people don't. Maybe that affects my experience. I may someday try an SV-8 wheel to see if the reduction in drag is worth, to me, the reduction in light output. For me neither reduction makes the decision on its own; both reductions are factors to consider. Yours, Thomas Lynn Skean On Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 12:38:18 PM UTC-5, Jim Bronson wrote: The hubs that are for smaller wheels will generate full light with modern LED lights at very slow speeds, something less than 5mph, in my experience. People overestimate the speed required, and thusly suffer hubs with higher rolling resistance. It's an outdated argument that frankly needs to stop being made, unless the person in question is using old school halogen lights. That's the only case under which you really need the higher output. Clearly Rivendell agrees with me, as they sell only the SV-8 version and not the PV-8. I can understand, if you already have the SON28, or one of the Shimano hubs, or the PV-8 that the lower rolling resistance is not worth $100-$300 to fix by buying a new hub. If you are buying one new today though, there's no reason to consider the models with higher resistance. hth/k/bi. [RBW] Re: Intelligent design dynamo hubs
I have an SP PV-8 hub on one Hillborne and a current-generation SON28 on another Hillborne. I like them both just fine. I may end up getting another dynamo'd wheel in the future and, barring near-future failure of the one I have, will probably get another SP PV-8 just because it's $150 cheaper. If I were a generally faster rider I might've gotten an SP SV-8 (which I think is the one intended to work with smaller wheels with higher typical rotation rates. But I don't like the notion of worrying about going fast enough to see when I have a choice. I use them both with an Edelux II and find I have plenty of light when I need it, even below 10mph. Off-the-cuff I can't tell whether one hub yields more light than the other at the same speed. Nor can I tell that one is more easy-rolling than the other. Sometimes I do feel that the SON28 is rolls *smoother* but not necessarily *easier*. On both I can feel the resistance when the light is on versus when the light is off. And for both I *think* I can tell that they do not roll as easily as a non-dynamo hub even when the light is off. But assuming that's true it's not nearly enough to make me want to go back to a non-dynamo hub. I would consider going back only if either becomes unreliable as a light source in the next few thousand miles. I got the SON28 simply because I suspected (and still suspect) that it will last longer. With only hundreds of miles on each (all problem free) I can't speak with experience on life expectancy. I'd've been very disappointed if either had had issues before now. I prefer the SON28's connection style but the SP's works fine also. [RBW] Re: Local Rivendell Dealer suggestions for DELMARVA area?
It isn't clear to me how the notion of an RBW bike shop presence would work for anyone except a very few customers. Riding (or even just seeing) a bike before purchasing one can make a difference in customer choice. I believe that a customer with that opportunity would be more likely to buy an RBW bike and, thus, be somewhat more likely to benefit. But surely RBW's dealer network won't be all that big even after an initial foray, so that's not a lot of customers. But can RBW offer the profit margin to the dealer that justifies the dealer's up-front expense, let alone ongoing ones? Will RBW's business-the-way-it's-done-now suffer as a result of having to manage dealer needs? I believe RBW is remarkably efficient at accessing its potential customers. Will bike shops be *more* efficient? Or significantly expand the market? Yours, Thomas Lynn Skean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Vittoria Voyager/Rando Hyper riders ..... Tread Life
Can't say what's common. But I have noticed that my Rando Hyper 700x38 tires have worn generally more quickly. I'm sure I have more than 1000 miles on them (probably less than 2000). They certainly aren't worn down to the fabric core but are more bare than my Schwalbe Delta Cruisers of similar usage on my other bike. I keep them pumped higher than 50psi, that's for sure. Probably 65+ psi. It's a trade off I recognize. I do enjoy riding on them, though. The size and weight work very well on my VO-befendered Hillborne. They do ride wonderfully. When time comes to replace them, I may get them again even if they don't last as long as some other tires would. [RBW] Re: Your Boulder and Rivendell compare/contrast.
Hear hear! If you can only get one, a Sam is a good choice. In fact, when desirous of a second bike, I got yet another Hillborne. At the time I weighed enough that it was probably truly warranted in some sense: I never ride for speed, always want to carry stuff, and was (and still am) fat to boot. I do ride year round, I do ride on rough roads and moderate trails, I do ride tens of miles when I can, and I do want to know that the bike is not become mis-shapen just because it's me riding. Sounds like a job for a Hillborne. I do now weigh somewhat less and sometimes I wonder... would my second bike have been something else in these current improved circumstances? A Hilsen-type? A singlespeed? A (gasp) road bike? Alas, I seriously doubt I'll ever know. My Hillbornes are the bees knees. And there's always at least one ready to go! Re: [RBW] Re: Stolen SimpleOne and a question
+1 I have them on both Hillbornes. For me the weight is weight well spent. In low/moderate-risk suburbia I park in lots of places where this is more than what's really called-for but is probably as convenient as locking gets. And in conjunction with a more robust lock it's just that much more dissuasive. My attitude towards security went from find the best to be reasonable when I had to steal my own bike once, due to a lost key. I got first-hand exposure to something that was merely abstract until then: Stealing almost any bike under almost any circumstance is *trivial* to any one who *intends* to do it. Took me 45 seconds, first time trying (honest! :)). Security is about making it really inconvenient, not about making it physically difficult. When I walk away from my bike, I don't imagine it's existentially protected from theft. In my environs, my bikes' double-top-tubes, lugs, wet paint, and super-high handlebars may provide more protection than choosing a high-end lock over a low-end lock. Re: [RBW] Curious: saddle bags versus panniers?
The romance has overtaken me! Panniers, saddlebag, handlebar bag, folder frontbag, rack trunk, frame bag, basket bag... as long as it's canvas and supported by steel and/or leather if at all practical... I love it. As for Arkel/Ortlieb/other... the fine well-engineered examples have decided advantages... sometimes it's shape, rigidity, organization, ruggedness, sheer size... But I love the romance. So give me canvas. Saddlebags for a more carefree, lighter approach, with or without a rack. Panniers for larger loads or more potential. Front bag on the Bike Friday with its Brompton-style luggage mount. Handlebar bag for accessibility (though nothing beats RandiJo's Bartender for sheer convenience). Basket bags if baskets are already attached from some prior particular need. Rack trunks hold tools up front and a growler in the back. Precisely because I can not just settle on which bag type is generally more useful/appealing I often end up (over years) with the near-complete gruppo of any bag brand/design I find appealing. Though of Ostriches I still have only the one bag, the DLX pannier. The Big Bicycling! Excellent equipment! [RBW] Re: Advantages of Multiple-Riv Homes
I have two nearly identical Hillbornes (2010 and 2012). For me, the advantages are 1. redundancy - in case I want to tinker with one, the other remains rideable without any compromise in enjoyment 2. winter readiness - when appropriate, one Hillborne has studded tires all the time (Chicago area) Interestingly, I don't think these two are the start of an N+1 lifestyle. Sure, I dream of having at least one of every kind of bike that ever appealed to me (a single speed, a mixte, an internal gear bike, a bombproof bike, a fast bike, etc.). But that's not driving bike-buying choices (yet?). I have however recently purchased a Bike Friday, because I've wanted a folding bike even before I had the first Hillborne. They represent personal mobility in a way that full-size bikes do not. Trust me, it's about as similar to my Hillbornes as a 20-wheeled bike can be (very high albatross bars, seatpost with generous setback to correct for the steep 73-degree seat tube, dyno lighting, bar-ends on thumbies, grip king pedals, silver everywhere I could put it, and bags and a seat cover by The Fabulous RandiJo herself). Now that I've taken care of the home front and the travel front, I think I'm done buying new bikes until my ship comes in or I need a trike. Oh wait... I left trike off of the appealing bikes list above. Note that recumbent is not on that list... just never wanted one. If/when that ship comes in, one of the earlier uses of my new-found wealth will be a physical trip to RBW, where I will order one or two each of the Cheviot, Roadeo, ThenCurrentQuickSimple, AHH, and Bombadil. And a custom, of course. Yours, Thomas Lynn Skean On Monday, March 16, 2015 at 3:51:15 PM UTC-5, Liesl wrote: Between my partner and I, there are 5 Rivs in our basement. Thanks to all for the suggestions. I get the impression that this job is too small (as defined by what I'm willing to pay) for it to be part of somebody's actual business. [RBW] frame repair in Chicago
Hi, all. I've done a stupid thing and the upshot is that my kickstand plate on a Hillborne is separating from the stays. Does anyone here know who in the Chicagoland area (I live in the western suburbs; closer to me would obviously be great) would be able to remove/repair/replace my kickstand plate? Any ideas as to how much any of those options might cost? Any thoughts whether any re-painting of the frame could be limited to the kickstand plate area (plate, stays, BB shell)? Fortunately, I can still ride the bike right now. But of course I'd rather have a healthy, hearty, hale Hillborne.
