If you find Cycology gloves too loud, you may not like
these: https://handupgloves.com/collections/all-gloves. Still, check out

[RBW] Re: "Grant hates toe clips."

2023-12-25 Thread 'Tom M' via RBW Owners Bunch
White Industries urban pedals (or MKS equivalents) and half-clips on my
bikes, including the tandem. Tried Look pedals for a year and, while I like
the way they felt, I never got comfortable clipping in and clipping out for
traffic lights etc. Went to half-clips and never regretted it. I like the
retention half-clips give, as well as the ability to quickly put a foot
down when needed. And I'm slow enough that whatever efficiency I lose
compared with clipless probably doesn't matter.

[RBW] Re: Inquiring about "sling over the rack" rear panniers; perhaps trade for Medium Happisack or Sackville?

2023-06-30 Thread 'Tom M' via RBW Owners Bunch
Arkel makes something similar to what you're looking for
(https://arkel.ca/collections/bike-panniers/products/dry-lites-saddle-bags).
We use these on our tandem, and they've proved to be durable. They're
designed to attach to your rack top with velcro straps, but I think you
could simply leave the bags velcroed together and attached them at the
bottom.

[RBW] Re: Seeking rim input

I'm running Velocity Blunt SS with a WI rear and Son front and 50mm tires
(48mm measured on rim). They are relatively light rims (395g), for what
it's worth. I've been riding them on gravel once a week for the last few
months and have had no issues.

Best of luck with your build.

Re: [RBW] Re: Which Dyno Hub?

2022-07-27 Thread 'Tom M' via RBW Owners Bunch

This may or may not influence your decision, but The Pro's Closet has
several SP dynamo Exposure Lights combinations for
sale:
https://www.theproscloset.com/pages/search-results-page?q=exposure%20lights%20revo%20dynamo.

I'm a fan of Exposure lights, so I went with this combination for several
wheel sets I built up. I also have a SON wheel for my gravel bike. I felt
some resistance with the SON initially, but it quickly went away. With the
SP, I definitely feel drag or whatever through the handlebars, but can't
say whether if affects my speed. I don't know if that's an anomaly with
that particular dynamo because I don't have enough miles on the other SP
wheels to say. As far as rims go, the gravel bike got Velocity Blunt SS in
650b; the road bike got a Pacenti Brevit, also in 650b. I use an exposure
rear light, which plugs into the front light; it will stay lit for some
time after a stop, which is a nice benefit.

Enjoy wheel building.

Take care,

Re: [RBW] Re: Velotaxonomy: What are we, anyway?

2022-01-17 Thread 'Tom M' via RBW Owners Bunch
My wife and I usually rode together, but when I was recovering from
shoulder surgery, she joined a couple of meetup groups in our area. One
thing one of her rides did was to have a turnaround time. So basically, you
could ride at whatever pace you wanted, with whomever you wanted, but at a
certain point you turned around. That way everyone met up at the designated
spot at the same time. No one felt pressured to ride at a certain pace, but
people who wanted to ride at the seam pace could ride together. So meetup
groups might be what you're looking for.

[RBW] Re: Suggestions for better braking?

2021-12-20 Thread 'Tom M' via RBW Owners Bunch
+1 on replacing the stock pads, which are bad, especially in the rain. I
replaced mine with the Yokozuna pads Rivendell sells, but I'm sure the Kool
Stop would be an improvement as well.

[RBW] Joe Appaloosa build

The Radavist has a link to a nice video of a Joe Appa
build:

The owner uses a large-setback seat post.

Re: [RBW] Some refinements on the Platypus: IRD Wayback Seat Post

FWIW, the carbon rail upgrade is longer than the cast aluminum (ask me how
I know), and I ended up having to go with that for proper fit. Carbon may
be a nonstarter for folks on the list, so I'm just throwing it out here.

[RBW] Re: Bike shop recs sought

2021-08-07 Thread 'Tom M' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm sure others will chime in, but if you have a car, College Park Bikes
and Mount Airy Bikes (https://www.bike123.com) are worth a visit. Mt. Airy
Bikes is like a museum, and College Park Bikes, while smaller, has quite a
variety. Conte's Bikes in Old Town is just a great, friendly shop, and
although not a Riv dealer, they carry All City. Big Wheel Bikes in Old
Town, close to the river, is a small shop, with new and some used bikes for
sale. Last time I was there, they had some old classic bikes (Colnago,
etc.) for sale. Wheel Nuts Bike Shop, on the north side of Old Town, is a
friendly shop. Velocity Co-op is in Del Ray, if you're looking for use
bikes.

Enjoy your stay,
Tom

FWIW, the particular Crust Russ is reviewing isn't low trail — he said it's
76 or 75 mm. I don't have a particular dog in the fight, and I enjoyed the
video and don't consider it click-bait. As Russ said, he gets asked this
type of question all the time, so why not do a video?

I'm a big fan of the El Duke degreaser Rivendell sells. Works amazingly
well. Silca sells these gear wipes
(https://silca.cc/collections/workbench/products/hirobel-gear-wipes-canister-110-sheets)

I've taken to using on our bikes after wet rides. One towel will pretty
much clean a whole bike, though maybe not the chain or cassette. Saves the
need to use an old T-shirt and a separate degreaser.

[RBW] Re: Rearview mirrors: necessary, effective, recommendations?

2020-08-28 Thread 'Tom M' via RBW Owners Bunch
Agree with Joe about the Mirrycle MTB bars. Just a great mirror. For drops,
I've used the German mirror, Italian Road Bike Mirror, and the Rene Herse
one. The Rene Herse one is a bit fiddly to set up and is small, but once
it's set, it works fine. Has the advantage of going into the bar end and
not under the bar tape. The Italian Road Bike Mirror, once set up, has a
larger viewing area than the Herse, and I like it a lot. The rub is that it
either goes under the bar tape, in which case it can shift when you're
wrapping the tape, or it goes on top, and you have to use electrical or
extra bar tape to secure it in place. The German mirror has the largest
viewing area. It's not as elegant as the Herse or Italian.

I wear Oakley's with transition lenses and a progressive prescription.
Great eye coverage, and they get really dark. It took me a few rides to get
used to the distortion at the very edges, but now I don't notice it. I
always wear a cycling cap under my helmet, regardless of how hot it is,
because the helmet is more comfortable for me that way. I have light caps

Remarkable man. The bike pictured in the article appears to my eye to have

Handlebars above the seat, sprung saddle, rack and fenders, bottle dynamo

Hey, her blog got me to test ride a titanium bike. Seriously. Because she
was so open and honest about her abilities as a cyclist, and because her
impressions of whatever bike she was riding seemed so well thought out, I
believed what she wrote about the Seven she had for a while. That convince
me more than whatever else I'd read online.

So, glad she's back to writing about bikes again. I do vaguely remember the
online fight when she didn't disclose why she' stopped writing. Some people
demand a lot of what they don't pay for.

Yeah, I liked the info on Mongol saddles and their function. Not sure
Ghengis Khan is quite the tolerant ruler Grant paints him out to be, I
can't find my *Great Big Book of Horrible Things,* but the NY Time graphic
(https://archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2011/11/06/opinion/06atrocities_timeline.html?ref=sunday)

in support of the book says that GK may have culled the world's population

But I do dig the head badge.

[RBW] Re: Threadless versus threaded stems -- convenience summary

2018-11-07 Thread 'Tom M' via RBW Owners Bunch
Patrick,

Did you really type this: "And given my antipathy to fiddling"? Seriously?
I read your posts precisely because they include all kinds of fiddling (off
the top of my head: tire pressure, tire sealant [various kinds]; custom
cassettes, varying the Q-factor, etc.)

But to your main point. Even if your bike had a threaded steerer, you
probably would have needed more than one stem, at least in terms of length,
to vary the reach as much as you had.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB - Old / used / cheap 650B tires

2018-03-25 Thread Tom M
This doesn't help you with used, but Riv does sell Continental basketball
tires in 32mm
(https://www.rivbike.com/collections/tires/products/tire-650b-x-2-continental-basketball?variant=3669081161741),

which are available. Amazon sells Nifty Swifty tires, which are slightly
wider
(https://www.amazon.com/Panaracer-Nifty-Swifty-32-8mm-Black/dp/B001AH5WRI).
I have these on my 650b conversion, for the same reason as you—I doubt my
frame will fit anything much wider than 34mm. Even with the compromise in
tire size and quality (compared with, say, Compass), I'm pretty happy with
the conversion. The 32mm tires are better than the 26mm I was running for
the roads where I live, and the lowered bottom bracket height makes the
bike more stable for me.

Good luck with you project,

Cannondale Tandem 29er comes with flattish bars, 2.1 inch tires, triple crank

I've used the Arkel Randonneur rack

weight you'd want to put in it, but I've used it to carry work clothes,

saddle bags.

[RBW] Re: Training ride today on Bleriot.

2014-01-10 Thread Tom M
It looks like it's on their calendar
(http://www.dcrand.org/dcr/calendar.php); some members are already
registered for the ride. You might have to go back to your SH and drop
bars, if the upright ones are giving you that much trouble.

I am not sure what they are officially calling it. It was supposed to be
listed on their site so folks could register but I don't see anything yet.

I hope I can go. But those tendons where the thighs meet the abdomen
 (iliacs?) are killing me!
During the ride, they started hurting, but I figured they would work
 themselves out. But they didn't.
That has never happened to me before. I hope I am ok.
For now, walking and going up steps is tough. Any leg lifting movement
 hurts.
I hope I can ride again soon.
I don't know why my legs are acting this way. Maybe my body is not used to
being on the upright bike. Been riding the drop bar Sam 99.9% of the time
 since August.

(http://velonews.competitor.com/2011/11/bikes-and-tech/ask-nick/ask-nick-team-tactics-chain-lengths-choosing-a-new-bike-and-more_197660):

Here’s my chain sizing method for a road bike (with entirely compatible
gearing and derailleurs). I recommend sizing your chain using the largest
cogset you intend to ride.

-Run the chain through the rear derailleur, on the smallest cog and on the
small chainring. Pull it to where the chain won’t touch the pulley cage of
the rear derailleur, keeping it as long as possible.

-If you’re cautious, mark the pivot that you intend to cut with a Sharpie,
then run the chain (still through the derailleur) over the biggest cog and
big chainring. You should have plenty of slack.

typical derailers. This link has some

But it's all way outside my price range, so it's either my single speed or

[RBW] Re: SimpleOne

2012-04-11 Thread Tom M
They both sound like great bikes, but I think Rivendell was late to the
single-speed party. The Quickbeam copy says something about single-speed
riders getting tired of their bikes and the QB being a better alternative
to single-speeds. Then, a few years later, comes the Simple One. I think
the slanted rear dropout is pretty brilliant, but there are lots more
single-sppeds out there now than when the QB came out. So the Simple One
has lots of competition, and not just on price — the aesthetics of some of
them are nice as well.

Re: [RBW] What eye protection do y'all use when riding?

2012-03-25 Thread Tom M
Prescription Rec Specs with transition lenses and straps. They'll fog when
I'm stopped at traffic lights, but once I'm moving, that goes away. Decent
eye protection, and with the straps, they should stay on if I crash. I
normally wear bifocals but opted to save a little money and just get the
distance prescription. It doesn't affect me riding, but if I had to read a
cue sheet, it would be a problem.

lovely candy-apple red. Anyway, as I couldn't get anybody to buy the bike,
 I decided to start over.

The inspiration was the brown Schwalbe 26x2.15 Big Apple tires that were
introduced not long ago. And another brand of bikes we sell, Speedhound,
has a color option called nut green, which is sort of a minty pistachio.
Anyway, as my fantasy evolved, I thought black parts might look nice. I
 settled on a SRAM X.9 2x10 group with a 42/28 crank and a 11-36 10 sp
cassette. Hubs are disc-compatible White Industries and Schmidt (disc
compatible for maximum versatility in my current and future bike fleet).
Anyway, thought this might be of interest here, even though it goes against
the polished silver aesthetic preference of many RBW types. In real life,
it's not quite as minty as it looks in the photos from my iPhone:

[RBW] Re: Traveling to DC and Richmond

2010-01-12 Thread Tom M
February can certainly be dicey in VA. Just curious -- what route are
you guys taking? I live in NoVA, and my wife and I are planning to go
for at least one day of the show, but we'll be in my car, in case I
decide to come back with something I probably shouldn't buy...

[RBW] Re: Fenders on Bombadil for off-road and mountain biking...

2009-12-11 Thread Tom M
Soma makes EuroTrip fenders that are 60 mm wide. What's nice about the
Somas is that the stays are designed to pull away from the mount
should something become wedged between the tire and fender. To me, the
mounting is cleaner than what PB uses.

I have a set of the road versions on my single speed and the hybrids
on my old Schwinn, and I've been happy with both.

There's also the length issue.  Most metal fenders wrap lower behind the
front wheel which is good for coverage but bad for clearance over trail
obstacles.  With shorter plastic fenders, you can extend them with a flexible
mud flap that won't get caught on roots, rocks or logs.  (the holy trinity of
 fun stuff to launch over)

Also, Planet Bike makes a 29'er version of their Cascadia fenders that would
no doubt offer plenty of coverage.  I think that quick release hardware such
as that provided with SKS fenders is a pretty good idea, though.

They sell a size (P55 I think) that will accommodate up to 2.0 tires.

And then some.  They are pretty big fenders.

You will pick up many pebbles riding dirt, and metal fenders are just going
  to be too loud
  IMHO.

That can get annoying real fast.

I am debating whether to install fenders on my new Bombadil, which I still
haven't had time to finish assembling, but should be done by Saturday at

brakes. I have switched the knobby tires to Specialized El Capitan Control
2Bliss, 2.2 front and 2.0 rear, which now give good clearance. This is
essentially a 56mm wide front knobby tire and a 51mm wide rear tire.

I'd like to install fenders, which at this point would have to be Giles
Berthoud stainless steel fenders in 700x60, but am wondering if there
   would
be negative risks if I went mountain biking with the fenders. Someone told
me that a rock or something else could get stuck between tire and fender
   with catastrophic consequences.

I'm also planning to use Marathon Extreme tires when I'm riding it in the
road primarily and only need easy dirt trail capability, and just
   discovered
there is a Marathon Supreme version in 2.0 as well. Will the 1.6 Marathon
Extremes (42mm wide) look odd or behave oddly with 60mm fenders?

Let me know what you think about mountain biking and going off-road with
   fenders.

[RBW] Re: Pondering Sale of 68cm Quickbeam

2009-09-25 Thread Tom M

Sounds like you should sell the Atlantis to fund a Roadeo...

On Sep 25, 10:55 am, Shaun Meehan meehan.sh...@gmail.com wrote:
 It's not that I don't like the bike. It's not that I don't use the bike. I
ride it nearly every day. In fact, in a way, it might be my favorite bike.
But while I'm riding it, my poor Atlantis collects dust in the garage. I've
been thinking of building up a go fast bike because I've been doing some
riding with some folks who like to pretend to go fast. Also, I've done a
couple of sprint triathlons, and I might do more, and a fast type bike
would be nice for that. In a way, there's quite a bit of overlap between the
Atlantis and the Quickbeam in that they're both fendered, chubby tireable,
lugged steel, set-up to carry stuff, etc... So I'm thinking of selling the
QB, setting up the Atlantis as my primary commuter/errand bike and using the
cash from the sale of the QB to fund the purchase of a go fast. I suppose
I could set-up the 'lantis as a go fast but to me it seems like I'd be
selling it short of its potential and it's probably not the ideal bike for
 that.

 Anyway, I'm posting to see:

 1. What you all think I might be able to get for a complete 68cm QB
(essentially stock except I moved the noodles to the 'lantis and put
moustaches on the QB). Orange. Excellent condition.
 2. If there's anyone on the list that might be interested in purchasing a
68cm QB if I decide to go this route.
 3. To see if any of you think I'm crazy for considering doing this.

Part of me thinks that someday I might regret selling the QB, especially
since RBW may not do QB's anymore. Let alone 68cm QB's. But I can do
everything I do with the QB on the Atlantis and I just don't ride the
Atlantis all that much. And the Atlantis is a great bike too!  It deserves
to be ridden more. Any of ya'll have any thought on this?

[RBW] Nigel Smythe or?

2009-05-18 Thread Tom M

I just bought a Mark's rack, and I want to put a bag on it. RBW
currently has canvas versions of the Nigel Smythe Little Loaf, with
tweed versions due in June. I'm wondering if I should hold out for the
tweed, go with canvas, or consider either the Sackville or Baggins
bags. Anyone have experiences with any of the bags? Thanks.
