Yeah, I get that on the regular off the shelf hardware. It was for the
adapter.

With that said, if Paul won't make them anymore, even for a special

works. I've got a couple sets of Thumbies on the shelf that I could
certainly use if I could get them to work with my Silver shifters. Looking
at Laing's picture, certainly there's a bodge out there that ought to work
just as well as the adapters.

Re: [RBW] Re: long wheelbase, Hillibikes + tray racks

2022-06-21 Thread Wally Estrella
I confirmed yesterday that a GBW will fit just fine in a 1-Up rack. The
wheelbase is about 53 inches on Gus. The length of the rail on 1-Up is 54"
which is what 1-Up states as max wheelbase. The Equip-D says it can take a
56" wheelbase.

[RBW] Re: front carrying options for 2022

2022-06-09 Thread Wally Estrella
there was some redesign on the stay clamps or something like that. IIRC
Surly offered replacements up for free. Most likely any one purchased
today would have the new design, if not Surly should still be offering the
replacement items.

GREAT NEWS! My Gus arrived yesterday (6-1).

Good news! I'm finally going on that bikepacking trip in Cape Cod that's
been in the planning for a couple of months now.
News! That trip is this week-end
Bad news! No build up of Gus until Monday after work!

[RBW] Re: Memorial Day Bike Ride in Boston

2022-05-26 Thread Wally Estrella
NICE! A few weeks ago I had a gang of 11 take the Reformatory Trail from
Concord onto the Minute Man and into Boston. The back out to Lexington
then left over to Battle Road. It's always a fun day! We'll try to go down
once to twice a year. Enjoy the ride!

When traveling back through Arlington a rider on a Clem caught up with
me. We talked Riv stuff for a mile or so before he split off. It was his
first Riv and he LOVED it!

modern wider hubs/frames, but I think it'll squeeze in OK to mount on a
Gus. I've seen a pic of a T-tack on a Gus, just need to find it again.

[RBW] Re: frame timeline?

2022-04-21 Thread Wally Estrella
Update - Hillibikes and Atlantis framesWe found out the Hillibike boat
won't reach Oakland until the 28th, so we'll only be able to start shipping
frames and building bikes in early May. It usually takes about a week and a
half from the time the boat arrives to when the container arrives here.
Everybody who has a frame on order has been so patient and understanding,
so thank you for that. We're in the final stretch of the wait now.

[RBW] GBW specs?

2021-12-21 Thread Wally Estrella
This info was listed on the Riv Susie page:

"These numbers are important:

seat post: 26.8mm

FD clamp: 28.6mm

Standard 1" threaded headset (included)

73mm bottom bracket shell"

Aside from headset difference of 1-1/8" on GBW is everything else the same?

TIA!

What a lovely bicycle for sure! I'm glad I went with the mermaid over the

OOOH! I like this very much, Eric. I had been leaning towards a mix of
green parts. So, similar too, but different than Leah's Platy II. Due to
availability though I've found I'm getting more silver and/or polished
parts than I hoped. At minimum I'll have green Paul Love Levers :)

Thank you! Well, I was in on the original run, but lockdowns were
happening around then. My work situation was unknown at the time (as was
most things then). So, I bailed on getting one. Not this time though :)
I'll (seemingly) always say "I don't like that Riv color selection!" then
see it in person then say "WOW! That's sharp!". I'm looking forward to
finally getting a mermaid Gus. Almost went w/ the orange, but I have an
orange Quickbeam.

Good luck w/ the Susie/Wolbis!

If you are in the Susie category, that LimeOlive is deceptively slick!
It tips the scale on handsome when paired with black & grey. But, if you
want to add color with anodized bits, and housing, the choices are varied…
blue, purple, raspberry, or even green would top my list.

The DarkGold is beautiful, but many of the off-the-shelf component
colors, to my eyes, would be too strong for it. It begs to be adorned with
grey and silver, which is its own type of perfection. Of course, someone
will post examples to prove me wrong, but that is how I differentiate the
 two colors.

[RBW] tell me how a loaded Gus/Susie handles

2021-12-06 Thread Wally Estrella
and how the handling is when loaded in different manners:
front: low w/ panniers and/or high w/ a bar bag or basket
frame bag?
rear: big saddle bag and/or an over the center of the rear wheel rack load
with panniers on the rear?

My intended build would be w/ Tumbleweed racks (already have them). I'd
mount manything cages onto those when needed. a handlebar bag and
saddlebag (probably use the BXB bags I have already).
And if the real estate allows I'd put Wald basket on the rear rack w/ a bag
in that.

thanks!

[RBW] Re: Minimotos on a Quickbeam?

2021-12-06 Thread Wally Estrella
GREAT! Thanks, folks!

I did an order on this before asking the questions. Sounds like a good buy
to me :) Now, the wait. The QB is probably shelved for the Maine
winter anyhow. I might be able to get a few more rides in.

[RBW] Minimotos on a Quickbeam?

2021-12-06 Thread Wally Estrella
I've ridden my Quickbeam for about 2 gazillion miles. Give or take a
gazillion. The Neo-retros have been good at stopping this Orc sized
rider. I'm guessing the MiniMotos will be even better.

Any others try Minimotos on their QB? Good for stopping? And I'm guessing
no issues for tire clearance (currently has Shikoro 42s on it).

Also, did you run the rear cable into the center holder then out to the
noodle or just from the directly into the noodle from around the seatpost?

Thanks,
Wally in Maine

[RBW] My bailer's remorse meet your buyer's remorse? Gus Boot Willsen

2020-06-16 Thread Wally Estrella
Hi Folks:

Short version: I was in on GBW pre-sale then this covid-19 lockdown and
uncertainly (job-wise) left me twisted. I had to bail on my GBW slot on an
XL green Gus. Now, I'm feeling OK w/ $ to be spent on a GBW,
but...SOLD OUT!

If you have dibs on an XL Gus (preferably green, but I'd consider a blue)
and have buyer's remorse on it.let's talk. Shoot me an email directly.
I'd even possibly be happy to offer a Off Course Of Remorse Of Course
reward.

If not, Will says RBW has plans for a 2021 make of GBW.

Stay well! Stay riding!

[RBW] Re: Help Pimp My Quickbeam

2020-05-21 Thread Wally Estrella
Yes, it holds the Sackville. It fits just the same, just not covered higher
on the sides as the full 137 basket. Hobbit sized at 68.5. I have used
brass clasps to hold it in place on the 137. Never any issues w/ it, if
clasped down. With the racing basket, even with clasping it down, it will
bounce around some and reposition. Not falling out of the basket walls
though. Not a show stopper, but I've since been using either the Cap'n
Hook net or a John's Irish Strap over the top of it.

[RBW] WTB/ISO Riv Sackville Stickpack

2020-05-15 Thread Wally Estrella
Hi Folks:

Any nice condition Rivy stickpack/backpack not being used? I'm looking for
one. If it's an olive color you'd get double bonus points (probably a few
patches) plus an option from below to pick from.

Other colors accepted too though. You'd only get a bonus option from the
below:
Trade for cash (PayPal or Venmo works for me). I have Tumbleweed T-rack or
mini-pannier rack for trade (one is slightly used, the other new/unused).
Or, or, how about a new/unused Ocean Air (Nitto version) Erlen saddle bag
support for trade consideration?
Again, $ works as the first option.

Stay well! Stay the distance!

Email me, pleases and thank yous!

I wonder if this was the one at the Great Maine Bike Swap. I deleted the

one @ the swap.

You know you want it, Chris! ;)

"...too far away for me to help with a sale..." I'm not as far away as
Chris to this (10' closer), BUT I might be able to help get this and get it
to a new home if there's any interest from this board. I'll be in
Thomaston, ME this Saturday, May 18th. Thomaston to Bar Harbor is about
1.5 hours. If you could convince the seller to deliver it to me in
Thomaston, I'd bring it south to Saco. Then get it packaged up for you.
HIt me offline via email to discuss details.

[RBW] Re: Plus Tires for GBW

Patrick,

Since you are leaning towards the Schwalbe side of things also consider the
Hans Dampf. It's now available in 27.5 x 2.35 / 2.6 / 2.8. A PhD in
Rubberology is required though to fully understand all the compounds
Schwalbe uses. OOOPS! I just re-read your post. NNs on the way. OK,
perhaps consider the HD for next time ;)

Capable? Ready for anything? INDEED!
My dynohub equipped Quickbeam would get me into Isengard then onto Mordor

Re: [RBW] Re: Mystery bike in April Blahg

2019-04-29 Thread Wally Estrella
Adding a dynohub just makes it extremely more useful. I was indecisive for
years on getting a dynohub set-up. I've literally lost as many lights on
the trail and to aged batteries than I have into a laced up dynohub.
After the first night ride out I was so glad for the purchase. No worries
to ensure lights get charged, lights then get put on to the bike or in
bag. Also, I'm often out for hours on the trail (or road) in the dark.
Having something that burns out after 1.5-2 hours versus something that
just keeping burning the light wins it for me.

It seems you are as excited for this new anniversary bike as I am for a GBW
production to be announced!

2019-02-19 Thread Wally Estrella
Just make sure your smart phone has a GPS chip and you should be OK. I use
Ride w/ GPS for my route creation. I had downloaded my route for a bike
trip last summer. This for an area known for having no cell coverage to
being very spotty at best in some areas. My phone had lost it's routing
after about 40 miles into a 60 mile ride out. It had worked great, in
airplane mode, up to that time. We made it out and back fine, but could see
getting into trouble easily in some areas.

Hey Folks:

Opening a new post on the RBW 25 'tis a gathering. I'd love to attend the
west coast 'moot, but it's too far for this prancing pony. How about a
northeast/east coast 'moot-up?

I posted it on Instagram as well @wickedwoolly. I think there are some
folks on here and over there, but not all are in both spots, thus this post
to reach out to get all Hobbits notified.

Hit me up offline w/ your name/email/location, subject the email ‘Rivmoot

Massland. May also create a poll to gather a general consensus on
date/location. Make it a day event? Make it an S24O with some rides? Tear
Isengard down? What to do? What to do?

In other east coast related news. Punxsutawney Philbo Paggins has emerged
from his hole in the ground...it'll be an early spring with many more
years of riding on leather and RBW.
