My best resource is http://www.ibreatheimhungry.com for recipes. The author
there has a great collection of recipes that she shares and offers a pretty
great variety to boot.

[RBW] Re: Massively upgraded Appaloosa

2016-06-02 Thread Zach Kahl
Bill! I was only making a topic for clarity and simplicity, in no way was
meaning to make you look like a village idiot. I think that upgrades like
brakes and wheelsets are often overlooked but can make the biggest
difference to a ride (or in this case, "a slow down"). Sorry for the tongue
in cheek maybe coming off as a maybe less helpful post, was meant in good
fun.

Again, I have had a great trip watching your Appaloosa grow up. Thanks as
always for your contributions here!!

Thanks for the updates with your journey of the Appaloosa, it's been a fun

[RBW] Re: Thinking of a Riv

2016-05-26 Thread Zach Kahl
What a great thread. I would say the worst thing about buying a Rivendell
is that every option is a win. That said, people who ride Riv (in my
opinion) know exactly what type of riding they are wanting to do and then
pick out which bike is best for that. Most all of them are going to attach
some weight to the bike(s), which makes the Roadeo kind of a niche bike
once you already have a Riv that will allow you to go on a tour. Since you
said you want to have only one bike, I would take a strong look at the AHH
or an Appaloosa.

I am on a 62 Hunq and I am 6'6" with a bad back. I still built it with DT
shifters and that is a decision I made and have not looked back on for a
second. The brainlessness that happens once I got used to the reach make
being on the bike very natural for me and allowed be to acquire the feeling
that makes a Rivendell so dreamy once it is dialed in (I have more trouble
finding the right bottle cage than I do finding my shifters).

I have heard everyone hear say supporting things about both of the bikes
you started out talking on; with some additions on your first 2 choices. I
would recommend cancelling the Roadeo and look at the other options. I
would not go 11sp because I think that these bikes work great as 9sp or
less (with a triple front ring you can run the whole gamut with the proper
cassette).

I would say that you are only at the beginning stage of making your
decision and once you know all of the choices front and back you will make
your choice of what you want and will ride. This will make the first day of
ownership be just as special as every day you ride the bike. I would be
surprised if you bought another bike ever again, and if you did I am
certain it would be another Rivendell.

Buy something that has tire clearance, buy something that can accept a
rack. Enjoy yourself and have no regrets!!

Re: [RBW] CLEARCOAT o'er baremetal & why we don't do it anymore

2016-03-19 Thread Zach Kahl
I had a classic track frame built. Fillets. I wanted it to look raw and
asked for it to be clearcoated. I was very underwhelmed with the finished
look. I think paint is as important as anything else in terms of *looking *at
a steel bicycle, although every choice has a time and a place.

Yeah. That 60 is a tank. John at Rivelo and myself were taking turns to get
it up or down the short staircases at the shops landing. Thank you all for
the insight. Exactly what I was looking for. What a great community that
makes up RBW.

Thanks again to everyone for your thoughts and opinions on this.

True. I thought that the 60 looked quite a lot larger than the 55 (more
than 5cm to the naked eye ;)). I don't know anyone in Portland who rides a
step through and I have never owned one myself so wasn't sure how the
fitting would work out. She was hands down more confident on the 55 without
a doubt. So that is the direction we are going to go. i plan on calling G

is a 55cm Orange. It sounds like the 2016 frames will all be done in the
Olive Green color only.

[RBW] Cheviot in betweener opinions?

2016-03-04 Thread Zach Kahl
Hey all!

My fiance has been on the hunt for a Chev for a while and falls between the
55 and 60. She is 5'8" with a PBH of 85. She test rode the 55 that had
albatross bars on it and she thought it "felt great". The seatpost showed
about 15 cm. Then she rode the 60, setup with boscos and thought that the
bike "felt huge" which I *feel* is largely attributed to the bars. The
seatpost on the 60 showed about 3-5 cm.

Now the fiasco lies in here - Riv is all out on the 55 until the next
orders come in around (maybe August?), so does one get a 60 now and set it
up with a 9cm stem and a sweep back bar that feels more nimble at chance
that it really will feel too large? Or just wait out for the 55, possibly
missing a lot of summer touring with me here in sunny (in the summer)
Oregon? The great thing about a stepthrough is the huge range that it can
suit, yet there lies a risk of still being too large for her to really have
a good time on. She has been on a bike for 10 years that I feel runs a bit
small for her, so I think it will take some time to be comfortable on a
frame that fits her correctly and so on...

Not looking for an answer but merely wanted to reach out to those here who
know the name Rivendell as well as understand that waiting is part of the
reason we all own RBW bikes and makes them all the more special. I respect
everyone heres opinions, so thank you if you have one!!!
