[RBW] Re: Single speed handlebar recommendations
Tom, I used my S1 for a few years as a daily commuter in SF and Portland. Your use sounds different, but for riding in the city, a pair of Nitto Dove bars were excellent. Less width made busier, more crowded streets easy to navigate. With no need for bar end shifters, the less expensive Dove bars were a good fit. Deacon,Thank you. I'm sure that is solid advice. A Hunqapillar is just what I was thinking of. I love the Simple One, and it's perfect for getting around Portland, which is mainly very flat, but I figure I could do both with the big bike. We live in a small condo (very), so there is no room inside. Our building has some bike storage, but its crowded and I wouldn't like to hog too much space. Trying to find one bike that could do it all. It would also make the $2,000 price tag for a Hunq frame easier to justify. [RBW] Re: Rambouillet conundrum
I have the grand bois cyprès 32 on my 58 orange Rambouillet. I've done a couple of 200k rides, a few shorter weekend rides, and commuted for a few months. So far, no flats. I like the ride a lot. So far, my favorite bike I've ever owned, but I'm not a performance cyclist. Michael Allen On Friday, April 4, 2014 10:44:27 AM UTC-7, Jeff Ong wrote: So, I've got a lot of bikes and zero cars. Only two are conventional road type bikes (a 2004 Merlin Fortius and an '84 Nobillette). Many are mountain bikes, and my daily rider/commuter is a 1995 Voodoo Bizango that I've added rack/fender eyelets to, converted to drops and 2 inch Schwalbe Marathons, and basically made into a sort of Atlantis type ride. About a year ago, I bought a secondhand (or third- or fourth-hand, who knows?) Rambouillet (from the first run of framesets, in pearl orange). My idea was to have a sporty road/light tourer with fenders, since I live in Portland, where it drizzles seven months of the year. I built this up with a pretty Riv-like collection of stuff -- a VO triple crankset, platform pedals, some nice wheels and Pasela 28s, Shimano 9-speed bar end shifters, bars a bit above saddle height, etc. It's super pretty, everyone oohs and ahs over it, etc. The problem is, I kind of hate riding it. It just steers like a pig, wallowing through turns, and it feels super slow to accelerate. I get terrible pedal strike unless I coast around every turn. I've really tried to get used to the ride, but I always find myself getting angry when I'm out on the bike... like hurry up, man! come on! I'm a decent enough mechanic to know that there isn't anything mechanically wrong. I do think this bike is bigger on me than I generally ride -- I'm 6' tall and this is a 58cm, and generally I ride smaller than that, although it's difficult to compare compact frames against this more traditional geometry. The bike isn't super light (27 lbs or so with fenders and racks), but many of my bikes are around that weight or heavier. Am I just not cut out for Riv-type geometry? Is it poorly fit to me? Is there something about the Rambouillet that just makes it slow-steering and ponderous? I would love to swap out this frameset with something livelier and more fun to ride (but that can still take racks and fenders with 28mm tires), and I'm just hoping to not make the same mistake. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Frozen, then sloppy, spring ramble
Patrick, This is my favorite ride report and set of pics to date. There are a lot of wonderful things about living on the coast in California (SF), but no opportunities for riding in hub-deep snow and listening to it sing in the afternoon. Thanks for posting. Freeze/thaw cycle in Spring makes backcountry riding extra adventurous. I tested out the theory that riding faster over crusted snow means you don’t fall through. Worked great, until it didn’t. Crunch! Flip! Plop. Hysterical laughing for way too long. It’s great being a kid! Made the reservoir after some mid-thigh snow pushing. The ice was singing from the heat change in the morning sun. Fantastic deep melodious tones, a lot like whale song. Mesmerizing. Heading back things had warmed up to 40˚F and were fantastically sloppy, muddy, and grand. Had to dodge people out shooting as much as possible (seriously? on Monday morning in spring? Who does that? But they were likely asking the same thing of me). A fantastic way to spend 6 hours! [RBW] bike commute meals
My go-to is homemade muesli with lots of nuts, unsweetened dry cranberries, dry sour cherries, date pieces, and some oats. Each batch is a little different. Sometimes a little coconut or something else that looked good in the bulk bins. I put it in a container and pour a little maple syrup on it. When I get to work, I pour hot water over the top, let it sit for about five minutes. I find it very satisfying. I finished the 200k on Saturday with my persimmon Ram. My first brevet. I hadn't done any training except one 75 miler two weeks ago, and my 14 mile commute across san francisco and back. I wasn't very fast; I wouldn't be surprised to learn that I was the last one in. If you don't mind a certain amount of pain and discomfort, you don't need to train. The time limits are pretty generous. The ride though might have been more enjoyable with more preparation and training. I'm looking forward to finding out on my next one. My favorites are the Patagonia stand-up shorts with the lightweight Devold wool underwear. I've done 90+ miles with a heavy load along the pacific coast and never had any trouble.
