[RBW] Re: DIY Saddlebag Quick-Release
For those who asked, here's what the attachment part looks like: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-_LfrF0BfykU/VCxC4ADtbOI/B5k/A0T7a8HZv34/s1600/IMG_5466.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-LP-fQ_BcmQg/VCxDCIu9QjI/B5s/-1YKfAU3Igc/s1600/IMG_5468.jpg It's really straightforward, just a metal sandwich. I tapped the back plate for the 5mm screws, but I could just as well have used nuts. I really just wanted an excuse to buy the tap, but of course it also makes installation a bit easier. As you can see from the first shot, there's a bit of bowing going on in the plates because I probably tightened the screws down a bit more than I had too. I expect that in time the plates may bend a bit more and thus loosen but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. In truth, I'm looking forward to working out the kinks and improving the design. Thanks to all who gave a thumbs up :) On Saturday, September 27, 2014 4:12:41 PM UTC-7, jar351 wrote: I was pretty psyched when I bought a used Saddlesack bag from a fellow poster here last weekend. Re: [RBW] DIY Saddlebag Quick-Release
Andrew, would you mind elaborating a bit about why you chose panniers over saddlebags? I'm actually moving in the other direction if anything. I've always used panniers (and probably will continue to do so for commuting) but I've also had a Carradice saddlebag on my bike for the past year or so and I've loved the convenience of having it always on there, ready to hold my u-locks, golf discs, snacks, etc. when I'm packing light for a recreational trip. Thigh rub has never been an issue. That being the case, I'm eager to try a larger saddlebag on this latest build of mine. On Wednesday, October 1, 2014 2:12:05 AM UTC-7, Andrew Marchant-Shapiro wrote: I really want to love saddlebags. I love the concept, I've owned many, and every few years I try again. Not so English-classy, but they do the job. That said, that is a way prettier mount than most I've seen, and it looks well-made. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] DIY Saddlebag Quick-Release
(Hmm... I tried posting this a couple of days ago but it didn't go through for some reason. Let's try it one more time.) The weekend before last I picked up a used medium saddlesack from another poster on this list (thanks again, Dave, for a very pleasant transaction). As an Oakland resident who often often locks his bike on the street for short periods of time, though, I became concerned that someone would steal my oh-so-fancy-looking bag, even if it were chained and ziptied to my bike. After some consideration and some helpful criticism from my partner, I decided on the quick-release approach. However, at $96 + tax, the Nitto Grip http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/r13.htm that Rivendell sells is just too much an extravagance for me. After all, that's almost as much as I paid for the bag! So, off to the hardware store I went, and two happy afternoons later, here's what I came up with: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-aeGKazwuqLY/VCmidHiXJuI/B5U/2Isd4vR1dMU/s1600/IMG_5445.jpg For the record, yes, I basically copied the Nitto design as best I could and also took some cues from someone who had made the same sort of thing and posted it on Flickr. So I can't take any credit for the design, except perhaps for the idea to bar-wrap the PVC tube that the QR skewer skewers. Anyhow, if you don't count the cost of the drill bits and tap (which I wanted to have anyway) nor of the QR skewer (which I had already), the total cost of the mount was about $15. I'm sure it's not quite as sturdy as the Nitto mount, but so far it's proved capable as well as convenient. All of this to say that it can be easily and cheaply done, and it makes a fun Sunday afternoon project. [RBW] Re: New Kryptonite Bike Lock Idea
I also like this new Kryptonite lock idea in principle but have to wonder, why not just use a slight larger u-lock that can fit both front wheel and frame? Like some of the other posters here I also use two locks--for context I ride in Oakland/Berkeley/SF and often have to leave my bike outside. After having two bikes stolen when I first moved to the Bay Area, I learned my lesson and switched to using a u-lock plus cable combo, making it my policy never to leave my bike out late at night. That worked well enough for a few years until I was taught another lesson: my rear wheel and saddle were stolen after someone cut the cable securing them. From the bite marks on my u-lock I could tell that the thief had (foolishly) tried cutting it as well and failed. As a result, I've made it my policy to use two u-locks ever since. [RBW] WTB: Nitto Dirt Drop Stem 100mm (for my new Albastache cockpit)
Good day, folks. Recently, another list member was kind enough to sell me his Albastache bars and brake levers, which is a good thing since I'm building a bike on strict budget--just a lowly teacher here. However, despite my many meticulous measurements it turns out that Technomic stem I'd planned on using just doesn't get the bars up high enough--small frame--and the 80mm Dirt Drop just compresses me too much. So, before I plunk down another $70 or $75 on a stem, which I'd really rather not do, has anyone got a spare 100mm Dirt Drop lying around? Bonus points if you're in the SF Bay Area, but I'll be happy to pay shipping otherwise. Thanks for your time! [RBW] FS: Schwalbe Tires (700c) and Silver Brakes
Good afternoon, I'd like to dump a couple of things that have been burning a hole in my parts bin for a while, and maybe you could use these: 1) One pair of mounted but never actually used Schwalbe Mondial tires in the folding version (Evolution Line). 700 x 45ish. $90 with local pick-up or $105 shipped CONUS. More info here: http://www.schwalbetires.com/bike_tires/road_tires/marathon_mondial 2) One pair of lightly used Riv Silver caliper brakes with the shoes and pads replaced with black Tektro ones. Great for 650b conversions and such. $50 local / $60 shipped. Photos here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/37784914@N02/ Thanks for your consideration, Andre R. [RBW] FT: Nitto Big Back Rack (M) for Big Back Rack (L) / FS: Schwalbe Mondial Tires
Good afternoon everyone, My BBR (M) has been used for about a year and a half for commuting and grocery getting. It's in good shape and comes with regular mounting hardware. I've just realized that the large version would fit my bike a little better, so I'm looking to trade up. If anyone's got a Large they'd like to trade (or sell), hit me up with a private message. I've also got a pair of mounted-but-never-used 28x1.75 (700c x 44.5) folding Schwalbe Mondials (Evolution Line) that I'd like to unload. Maybe $100 shipped? Have a great week! Andre R. [RBW] FS: Schwalbe Mondial Evolution Tires 700x1.75
Hi folks, I'd like to sell a nearly new set of Evo Line Mondials (the folding version) in 28x1.75 size (700c). Not a model that Riv sells, so here's the Schwalbe page on them: http://www.schwalbe.com/en/tour-reader/marathon-mondial.html 1.75 translates to about 44.5mm, although on my 22.5mm rims, these tires measure about 42mm wide. Intended for serious touring, although I see no reason why you couldn't use them mainly for commuting. Mounted 'em, test rode 'em about 15 miles, decided they were too big for me. Nonetheless, they'e great tires and they retail for $90 each. I'm asking $110 for the pair, shipped CONUS. (If you're in the SF Bay Area, we may be able arrange an in-person sale for a bit less.) [RBW] Re: Small Saddlesack for Carrying a Laptop?
Hmm. I'm thinking that even if the laptop's in a protective sleeve, repeated bumping is still a bad thing. I thought that if the strap attaching the saddlesack to the seatpost were tight enough, there'd be no bumping, but it seems I was wrong, eh? Now that I look more closely at the photos on the Riv site, it does seem as if that strap is too high on the bag to keep anything in the very bottom from swinging back and forth a little. I might be with CoconutBill here in thinking that a pannier is perhaps a more stable place for a laptop. It's just that that would require me to get a rear rack *as well as* a pannier. I'm trying to keep costs reasonable here. I'm also starting to wonder whether an M-12 rack + basket might be a good option. It'll be similar to the porteur rack setup but with two possibly significant differences: 1) it'll be a little lighter than the porteur rack, and 2) it'll bring the load back a little toward the headtube. I believe that both of these differences are good in terms of steering quality, no? Lastly, it occurred to me that some of the unwieldiness might be due to the shape of the stem on the bike (a high-rise, dirt drop model). Maybe switching out the stem for a Technomic would help things in that regard? I'm lucky enough to have a 100mm one lying around. [RBW] Small Saddlesack for Carrying a Laptop?
My ladyfriend isn't quite happy with her porteur rack cargo system (too much weight in front makes the bike feel unwieldy to her), so I'm researching alternatives. I like the looks of the small Saddlesack in tan; I think it'll go pretty well with the bike. It's advertised as fitting a 13 Macbook, but how does it actually work out in practice? My main concern is that the laptop will bump against the frame or seatpost. A secondary concern is that a sprung saddle will cut into the capacity of the bag, perhaps making is difficult to fit a laptop. Anyone out there using a small Saddlesack (with or without a sprung saddle) for this purpose? Would you care to comment? Are there other alternatives I should be thinking about? I know that some of you out there run aluminum fenders and others don't, out of concern for the lifespan of such fenders, so I just wanted to put this out as a data point. After about two years of faithful service, my powdercoated Civia fenders have kicked the bucket. About a month ago I began hearing creaking sounds coming from the vicinity of my front wheel. After a bit of tinkering, I realized that the front fender was the culprit. I gave the daruma nut a turn or two and kept on riding. Repeat. Repeat. Snap. Eventually the fender washer just punched right through the fender. I guess that's part user error and part materials failure. Funny thing is, while this whole thing was going on, I managed to crack the rear as well. This one I take full responsibility for. I got a little overzealous with the Irish straps and a piano dolly and, well, I guess you get the idea... The best part? This happened after 7 or 8 months of riding in bone-dry weather. The week afterward I got caught in our first downpour of the season. Plus they're tearing up the main avenue in my neighborhood, so I ended up with asphalt mud all over my butt! [RBW] Re: Rivendell sighting what are the odds?
This just goes to show how warped my perspective is. I live in Oakland, just 10 miles or so from Riv headquarters, and I see several Rivs every week. I guess I'd begun to think of them as mass-produced. Re: [RBW] Re: Newbaum's cloth bar tape
Two things: 1) In my experience it takes at least four coats of shellac for it to end up glossy. If you like the matte look, my advice is to just lay thin coats and stop at three. Anyone else want to confirm that number? 2) The trick to preventing the tape from twisting and adhering to itself is to remove the backing only a little at a time. It takes a little practice to get your technique down but then it's not too bad. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] FS: Phil Wood SS (fixed-free) Rear Wheel
Sorry, y'all. Premature submission is a serious problem that many men suffer from... What I meant to say was... This wheel will fit right in on your SimpleOne build. Details: Phil fixed-free (i.e. flip-flop) high-flange hub, 120mm spacing, 6mm hex head bolts DT stainless straight-gauge spokes laced 3x 32H 700c rim of unknown maker (~20.5mm width, double-walled, stainless eyelets, machined sidewalls with wear indicator) Sorry for the vagueness on the rim. What I can say for sure is that the rim joint is very smooth, the rim spins round and true, and there is very little visible wear on the braking track. The previous owner was unsure of the manufacturer but assured me that he a chosen a very sturdy rim and that the wheel had been carefully built by a good mechanic/wheel builder. Basically, it's a good stout wheel that should provide many years of near maintenance-free use. I'd like $200 shipped (CONUS) but if you feel that I'm off the mark, don't hesitate to make a reasonable offer by email. [RBW] WTB: Periscopa or 80mm Dirt Drop Stem
Hi, folks. Has anyone got an old Periscopa lying in the old parts bin? I've got my town/touring bike set up with Soma Oxford bars (very like Albratrosses) and a Kalloy Dirt Drop 100mm stem (Nitto DD copy), and I'm not quite getting the laid-back position that I'm going for. Previously, I'd been using a 110mm Technomic that had me too far forward and a little lower than I'd prefer. I stuck with it for 9 months--god knows why--despite lingering elbow pain after any ride longer than 20 minutes. I've only had the Kalloy DD on for a couple of days but already I'm pretty sure it represents a sizable improvement. It places the bars about 2.5cm higher and 1.5 cm back from where they were with the Technomic, allowing me to lean forward less and take weight off my hands. Essentially, I'd like to take that a step further with a Periscopa, which should get the bars a little further back and maybe even a smidgeon higher. Failing that, I'd take an 80mm DD and use it with a shim. This is an admittedly lousy pic that more or less shows what my current setup looks like: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-dGVlYS7KQEQ/UUPTjcjzr_I/A9A/hXudRJVcgis/s1600/IMG_3753.jpg And here's another one that shows how I had things until just recently: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-j1bDS1RT89E/UUPVSwTqdfI/A9I/xUvcq0na8jo/s1600/IMG_3232.jpg Even if you haven't got the part I'm looking for, any thoughts on the ergonomics of an upright setup would be greatly appreciated. The funny thing is that I get worse elbow pain after riding a semi-upright setup (stem 1 higher than saddle, hands just behind stem) than I do after riding a drop-bar setup (stem level with saddle, hands forward of stem on hoods). I can only surmise that it has more to do with the angles of my elbows and the way force is transmitted through them than the amount of weight that I have on my hands. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: WTB: Periscopa or 80mm Dirt Drop Stem
Whoa nelly! From the looks of it a Periscopa will get my bars considerably higher than they are now and a little further back. I hadn't realized how tall that thing was until now. Lovely. Thanks so much, Erl, for sharing about your experience. On a related note, have you found the B17 (?) saddle adequate for this setup? Not too narrow or too stiff for all that weight? I'm thinking I'll want to go with something sprung, but I'm curious to hear your thoughts. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] FS: Synergy-XC Pro Wheelset (650b)
Selling a great hand-built set of 650b wheels, perfect for converting a vintage frame. The hubs are NOS Suntour XC Pro (100/126mm spacing, threaded for freewheel, cartridge bearing), the rims are 32H Velocity Synergies (machined sidewall, symmetrical version), and the spokes are double-butted. With maybe 100 miles on them, the hubs are basically new. The rims are not quite as minty but still low mileage with no signs of concavity on the brake tracks and no flat spots, dents or other damage. True and round and ready to go. I'm asking $240 shipped CONUS for the set with skewers. For an extra $30 I can include the tires and tubes. I'd like to sell this as soon as possible, as I could really use the money. Local pickup in Oakland, CA is also possible. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ObircnT9XRY/UQAhrny5hkI/Azw/4REIHssAikQ/s1600/IMG_3270.jpg Full photo set: http://s856.beta.photobucket.com/user/jar351/library/Specialized%20Sequoia%20650b%20Conversion%20-%201984 This build began with a 1984 Specialized Sequoia frame set. These Japanese-built beauties combined elegant details, racing angles, and the utilitarian benefits of a sport-tourer: ample tire/fender clearance, fittings for three water-bottle cages and a sturdy rear rack. This one was modified to fit modern, recessed-nut brakes. It received a first-class powder coat + clear-coat (from Melrose Metal Finishing, of Oakland). The color is a slate grey with a delicate metallic flake. It looks great in natural light. Then I built the wheels by hand, from NOS Suntour XC Pro cartridge-bearing hubs and 32H Velocity Synergy rims, using double-butted spokes and brass nipples. Extra-long Rivendell Silver brake calipers provided the necessary reach as well as ample fender clearance. The original crankset received a new, extended gearing range, self-extracting bolts, and a thorough polishing. The rest of the friction-shifting 3x7 drivetrain was chosen with an eye toward durability and simplicity. A cockpit featuring Nitto dreambars and a tall Technomic stem allow for a comfortable riding position, and a new, custom-fitted VO Constructeur rack provides carrying capacity without interfering with fender clearance. The bars are finished with high-quality cloth wrap and hemp twine, under several layers of fresh shallac.
