I just hope this is a success for Riv. I hope they attract more attention, more customers, and pull in more of the Almighty Dollar. I hope the Sam returns, because I want one. Hi everyone, It seems to me the original poster, grrlyrida, just needed a helpful, Remember, you will need to check and maybe tighten your shifters on a (regular basis or every 50 miles or once a week or...and this is how you do it yourself:... :) I think what may have been missed by Grant is that the original poster hadn't been instructed that the shifters will need regular tightening when the bike, or shifters, was/were purchased. Perhaps it would help to provide a small booklet with a newly purchased Riv, How to feed care for your new Rivendell bike! :) I didn't know these shifters might not work so well for people over 220 lbs, or for larger frame sizes, until Grant said so in his post. I hadn't read this anywhere before. I'm over 220 lbs, and I ordered my Hunqapillar in person at Rivendell, and no one mentioned this possible problem for me. Maybe no one at Riv knows this except Grant? I don't know. And no one told me, Please remember to tighten the shifters... And once I lose these extra pounds, will I still need to be concerned on a loaded tour? I think most people on this forum would qualify as enthusiasts or fan boys or fan girls of Rivendell bikes, but not everyone knows the particular needs quirks of each component, nor is everyone here a bicycle mechanical expert. Nor does everyone know what they don't know they don't know. :) Just $0.02 from a loyal Rivendell customer happy Hunqapillar owner, (Honest! I'm really, really happy!) [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread
I climbed on the bathroom scale with my Hunqapillar and the scale said 47lbs (minus the rider)! So I emptied my saddle sack onto the kitchen scale and the contents came to 5lbs (maybe I don't need so many Irish straps?), and I would guess the medium saddlesack is about 3-4lbs, since the the medium shopsack is 1lb, so my 54cm Hunq is about 38-39lbs with: Standard Hunqapillar albatross bar build Nitto small front big back racks Medium Wald basket SKS fenders Riv mudflaps 50mm Marathon Supremes Brooks flyer select saddle White Industries pedals BG halfclips Son Dynamo Luxos U headlamp 2 King Cage Iris bottle cages 1 brass Crane bell 1 mirror I guess I better recheck how much weight my bike racks can hold. [RBW] Re: HAR!!
Thank you Bill, I came to the same conclusion, but not being an engineer, I thought I must have figured something wrong. I'll bet there's a typo or mistranslation in there somewhere between the Japanese and English versions of the instructions. I think I'll be going with a longer M5 bolt, lock washer, Locktite and a lock nut on the end of the bolt. Cheers, John On Monday, July 7, 2014 5:29:20 PM UTC-7, Bill Lindsay wrote: 40-60kgfcm equates to approximately 4-6N-m which is pretty tight for an M5. 88-132lbf is not a torque unit. There's no length in it. 88 is just 40*2.2 and 132 is 60*2.2, so somebody converted kilogram force to pound force, but that's the right conversion only if you want your torque units to be pound force x cm. Who would want that? At any rate, that torque spec is pretty tight for an M5. If you've got a torque wrench try to get there. I don't have a torque wrench, but I do trust my mechanic hands, and I'd do it tight for an M5. Tighter than a water bottle or a fender M5. Tighter than an M5 threaded into aluminum.
