Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar Suggestions for MTB Build?

2016-08-15 Thread kielsun
I thought I'd follow up on this thread since you all gave me such great
tips during the search phase. I ended up settling on the Surly Open Bar for
my build, mostly because I was intrigued by the width and thought it would
be of benefit on trails.

I took a three-day bikepacking trip in the George Washington National
Forest just outside of Harrisonburg, VA in July, and the bars more than
lived up to my expectations. Day one was about 30 miles on tarmac, and I
can't say I loved them for this application. The lack of multiple hand
positions really left me wanting. When we got to the forest roads and
trails, though, I found them to be super comfortable and the width
definitely helped me feel like I could throw the bike around a little bit,
even though my front (zip-tied) Wald medium basket was nice and full.

I'm still definitely interested in going with the Jones Bar on my next
mtb--hopefully a complete new Surly Troll once I can pinch enough
pennies--but the Open Bar definitely fits the bill for what I need out of a
bar for now.

Thanks again for all the suggestions and ideas!

[RBW] Re: SUNRACE One-At-a-Time shifter maintenance?

2016-08-05 Thread kielsun
I use some cheapo click-but-don't-index Sunrace shifters I got from Amazon
(https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007QMJH86?vs=1) on my late 80s Rockhopper
adventure/mtb. I absolutely love them and prefer them to the Shimano Ultegras
on my Sam, which I also run in friction mode. I love the clicks! As far as
reliability goes, it's still early on, but for $8-10 a pair, they're a decent
bet for a non-top-of-the-line steed, and they performed well during a recent
three day bikepacking excursion on the VA MTB Trail.

Digression aside, hope you get yours sorted out! I'm excited to try them out
this weekend on my buddy's Clem that he bought from a list member.

Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar Suggestions for MTB Build?

2016-06-18 Thread kielsun
Ron, thanks again. I dug that picture up in an old thread when ready about the
MAP bar. Ben, I thought about going bullmoose, but I don't think the stem would
get the bars up high enough to match the height of my saddle. It's a bummer
because I really like how they look.

I rode into my favorite LBS this morning to look at some handlebars in person.
They had the VO Postino, Soma Oxford, and Jones Bend bars in stock, in addition
to a bunch of generic riser-style bars. The Jones Bend was very, very tempting,
but I didn't want to take the extra steps to convert to a threadless 31.8
clamp.

And so, I bit the bullet and ordered a Surly Open Bar with 40 mm rise. I like
the idea of the almost Jones-like 666 mm width, and the curve and sweep is also
pretty similar to the Jones Bend. I also like that it's cromoly and won't
(likely) snap. I'll pair it with a dirt drop stem to start and if that doesn't
feel right I'll give a Technomic a go. Let the experimentation begin.

Thanks again for all the great suggestions and ideas!

[RBW] Re: Handlebar Suggestions for MTB Build?

Getting there, Patrick. By "splayed out" I meant that my body felt too
elongated with the moustache bars on my Sam. Some of this splay could've
been avoided with a dirt drop stem, though. I'm definitely curious about
the Albastache if they're truly quite different from moustache bars.
Earlier in this thread you said you have a moustache I could try--did you
mean Albastache? If so, I'd be keen to give them a go. Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Handlebar Suggestions for MTB Build?

2016-06-17 Thread kielsun
Thanks Veloman and Ron.

Ron, I dug around and found an old post of yours about the Map bar. Definitely
intriguing. I measured the top tube of my Rockhopper and it's roughly three cm
longer than that of my Sam.

So here are the final few options I'm considering.

1. Albatross w/ 120 mm Technomic stem.
2. Map w/ a dirt drop or short reach (60-80) Technomic.
3. Surly Open Bar w/ either a dirt drop or short reach Technomic.

I love the Albas w/ 100 mm Technomic on my Sam, but the bar ends hit my knees
on tight turns if I'm not careful. I also use the VO seat post with long
setback with that setup to get a bit more stretched out. Realistically, the 120
mm stem would've solved that issue, but I had already glued the Meisha's grips.
Rookie move! Might feel the need to change that someday...

Going with the Albas and some Deore thumb shifters makes sense because it's a
known quantity. I'm less apt to try something new since my budget is tight
(read: non-existent!).

Bottom line: I just need to choose because I'd probably love any of these
setups and I just want to get this bike on the trail! :)

[RBW] Re: FS: Nitto, Sugino, Shimano, Tektro, etc.

2016-06-15 Thread kielsun
Another update here. A few things have been re-homed. I'm going to hang on
to the dirt drop stem for now while I sort out my never-ending mountain
bike build saga. Sorry to the interested parties for the runaround.

I'm still seeking trades for: Nitto Technomic stem (80-100 mm reach),
V-brakes (black/grey preferably), Albatross bar, Ergon grips.

Rivstuffs:

   - Nitto Moustache Bar (pictured)--$25 *plus* actual shipping: CroMo.
This was on my Sam for years. Some scrapes visible at clamp area.
   - Shimano Tiagra Road Levers--$25 shipped: Fine used shape.

Non-Rivstuffs:

   - Tektro CR720 Canti Brakes--$40 shipped: These are *black*. Rear are
new, front installed and used briefly. Trade straight-up for new/near new
   v-brakes?
   - Sugino RD2 Double Crankset 53/39--$50 shipped. Some wear. Arms are
   mostly free of scratches.
   - Ritchey WCS threadless stem--?$?: I have no idea what this thing is
worth. Maybe you do? Make me an offer.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Handlebar Suggestions for MTB Build?

2016-06-14 Thread kielsun
Folks, thanks for taking the time to respond. I appreciate all of your
ideas and wish I had the cash to try them all!

The Jones Loop is such a great-looking and seemingly versatile bar, so I'm
considering a threadless stem adapter, like the VO one, and going that
route, especially since I know I'd probably love them on my future Troll or
similar mtb. Hugh--I don't think I'd go so far as to get another fork for
this bike since it's just a stop-gap, but we'll see.

The Surly Open Bar also looks very promising and comfortable, and I
wouldn't have any trouble getting it high enough.

Patrick--I tried some moustache bars with a dirt drop stem and I didn't
like them for the same reason I took them off my Sam: I don't like the
positioning of the brakes. I feel too splayed out. It's weird, though,
because I figured they'd be more comfortable on a smaller bike. I guess
they're just not for me.

RJM and Chris--I have a flat bar lying around and might be able to scrounge
up a standard mtb bar. I'll give them a shot.

Robert--That trekking bar is really cool. I don't think I'd like to have to
reach for the brakes/shifters past the end of the stem, though. I think I
want some sweep.

Thanks again, all.

[RBW] Handlebar Suggestions for MTB Build?

2016-06-14 Thread kielsun
I hesitated posting this here, but it's definitely a Riv-inspired conundrum.
I'm building up a late 80s Rockhopper and having trouble finding the right
handlebar setup. It will primarily be a trail and off-road camping bike with
knobbies. I have my Sam for road riding and don't want much overlap between the
two.

The frame is borderline too small for me. It's an 18" and I would probably
benefit from a 19-19.5", but it should work fine once it's dialed, and it's
also just a stop-gap until I can save up for a Surly Troll frameset or
something similar.

Riv Content: I want it to be comfortable (but still nimble)--bars at saddle
height!

I've considered going with a standard Technomic and Albas, dirt drop with
straight-ish/mountain riser bars like the Soma Clarence, or even trying a
threadless conversion stem with drop-style bars. I have cockpit parts for any
setup: MTB levers and Deore thumb shifters and aero levers and Ultegra
bar-ends.

I've already tried a dirt drop stem with moustache bars. This created too much
reach because of the bar profile and the non-relaxed geometry of the bike.
Anything that I should consider that I'm missing?

I welcome any and all advice based on previous builds or experience. I'm pretty
new at working on bikes, so you won't offend me with newbie advice. Thanks for
your help!

Bob

[RBW] Re: Any benefits to the longer CS's?

2016-06-14 Thread kielsun
I've only spent about five minutes on a 60 Cheviot, so take this for FWIW, but
I did so immediately after finishing a ride on my 56 Sam. The Cheviot felt
super stable (in a good way), almost like I was an alligator and could feel my
tail trailing predictably behind me as I turned--a weird analogy, but it's what
I've got. I really enjoyed it, so much so that I momentarily contemplated a Sam
sale to partially fund one. :)

My buddy who owns the Cheviot also raves about its character in ascending and
descending hills. He says he finds it much more stable in steep sections, like
its firmly planted on the ground without any fear of the front wheel popping
up.

Here's an update on what's still available. I have a couple offers on the

I'm in search of. Already acquired Nitto shim. Thanks!

Rivstuffs:

   - Nitto Dirt Drop Stem--$45/shipped: Unsure of size (see picture), a few
   scuffs, solid condition overall.
   - Nitto Moustache Bar (pictured)--$25 *plus* actual shipping: CroMo.
This was on my Sam for years. Some scrapes visible at clamp area.
   - Nitto Moustache Bar (*not* pictured)--$10 *plus* actual shipping:
CroMo. I inherited this years back. Plenty of scrapes to cover with bar
   tape. Works fine!
   - Shimano Tiagra Road Levers--$25 shipped: Fine used shape.

Non-Rivstuffs:

   - Tektro CR720 Canti Brakes--$40 shipped: These are *black*. Rear are
new, front installed and used briefly. Would prefer straight-up trade for
   v-brakes.
   - Sugino RD2 Double Crankset 53/39--$60 shipped or would prefer to trade
for a mountain double: Some wear. Arms are mostly free of scratches.
   - Ritchey WCS threadless stem--?$?: I have no idea what this thing is

With this thread in mind, I dropped the stem/Alba bar height on my Sam today
pretty significantly to see how they'd feel with the grips at saddle height and
stem below. Made a huge difference on climbs and felt much more aggressive
while still super comfortable. No chance I'll be switching them out or
splitting the cables for a different cockpit anytime soon. Thanks for the
inspiration to tweak things a bit!

Re: Zip ties (WAS Re: [RBW] Re: Wald Basket??)

2016-06-08 Thread kielsun
I agree with Bill here on all counts:

1. Personal preference for/against zip ties is what it is--personal.
2. The possibility of more than one zip tie failing at a time is extremely
unlikely, therefore making the safety argument more or less null and void.
Aesthetics is the root here.

And so, I'll add something else to this perhaps already overwrought
conversation:

How often do you (or would you) actually lay eyes on the zip ties (rhyme
intended)? If they're visible it means the basket isn't being used much,
which in turn could mean that the basket might not be necessary at all. I
should probably cut (zip) ties and throw my basket in the closet this
afternoon--but then again, the need for a basket isn't always easy
foreseeable, so utility trumps efficiency for me.

I'm very curious about this with my Sam. It's my only road-ish bike and

experience riding for a full day, but I'd imagine that Albas would be as
comfortable for eight hours as they are for 2-4. Hmm, maybe I just talked
myself out of the whole thing.

Regardless, my query for those more knowledgeable than I stands as:

Are cable splitters a solid option if I'd like to be able to change the
full cockpit to something a bit more aggressive for longer and/or hillier
rides? Is there any downside to using them--ie braking or shifting would be
compromised or somehow less reliable? Thanks for any thoughts on this, and
I hope this isn't too much of a drift from the OP.

You could also get a truck bed bike rack if you think you'll be transporting it

[RBW] WTT: Nitto r-14 for Pannier-compatible rear rack

2016-06-03 Thread kielsun
Hi Folks,

The subject line pretty much says it all. I'm looking to trade my Nitto
r-14 for a pannier-compatible rear rack. I recently bought a silver Tubus
Tara for the front, and my Nitto mini is silver, so it would only be right
if the new rack is silver(ish), too. I am willing to throw a bit of cash
toward a trade for the right rack, and I'm open to selling the r-14 and/or
buying your neglected rear rack outright.

In terms of trades, a few that have caught my eye that I *think *would play
nice with my Sam are:

-Tubus Cosmo
-Tubus Fly (But not sure about tire clearance--anyone have experience?)
-Nitto Mt. Campee
-Nitto r-15

Please reply with any offers off-list if possible, or post your e-mail here
and I'll get back to you ASAP. Thanks!

Bob

Re: [RBW] Re: Remember Islabikes?

2016-05-29 Thread kielsun
My Sam would change for me because part of what I love about it are the
underlying philosophy and ideas. The unparalleled ride is number one, but the
other stuff matters, too.

To give a non-bike-related metaphor: a few years back I got the chance to play
a couple of shows with one of my favorite musicians/songwriters. He was a jerk
with women and was generally not a nice guy. Did his songs about love and
humanity and tenderness and mean as much to me afterwards? Hardly--I never
listen to his music anymore.

So the fact that the OP's views of Islabikes changed when she found out about
this other side of their corporate identity makes total sense to me. And again,
it makes even better sense to me that the idea of CF kids' bikes falls flatter
than flat to most listers.

Re: [RBW] Re: Remember Islabikes?

2016-05-29 Thread kielsun
I'm zero percent surprised that CF kids' bikes don't get a warm welcome on this
list. We gather here because of our love for or interest in Rivendell
Bicycles--lugged steel frames for everyday use that are intended to grow in
beauty through usage. CF bikes in general are the opposite of that. Whether or
not that statement stems from drinking Riv-Koolaid doesn't matter to me in the
least.

How would we all feel if Grant's next Blug post was all about the brand-new,
CF-forked, super lightweight pro line of Rivendells? I'd probably be pretty
bummed and my Sam would lose a bit of its luster. Seems like the OP's reaction
is pretty similar. The company marketed itself one way and is now doing
something quite different.

I never used bar end shifters before my Sam, and I absolutely love them.
Started out indexing, but I'm now friction-only. IME, there's a
night-and-day difference between the convenience of bar ends vs. DT
shifters--not even in the same ballpark. I've never used brifters, but they
aren't nearly as clean as bar ends to these biased eyes.

Re: [RBW] Seeking advice (and WTB) front lowrider rack and panniers for canti Sam

2016-05-25 Thread kielsun
Thanks for the tip, Jack B. Kainalu, you're probably right that I might as
well buy the ones that I actually like even if it'll cost me a few extra
bucks. I found the Ortlieb Sport Packer Plus panniers (same material as
those mentioned above but with a lid of sorts) for about $150, and these
provide a few extra L of space compared to the front rollers.

I'm also looking at Carrdice Kendal panniers (or the Super C, although
they're not as fashionable). I like the extra pockets, and the Kendal set
is more attractive than any of the Ortlieb models. Anyone have experience
with those?

Thanks again for answering all of my rookie questions and queries.

Thanks, Doug. I ordered a Tubus Tara and the mid-fork kit a few hours ago

I guess they can't be had stateside. Pretty great prices, too, even with
shipping.

I'm still up on the air about which panniers (and openly soliciting
offers), although I'm leaning heavily toward some of the Ortlieb Front

Still hoping for some more offers on panniers and front racks!

Bill, et al--You can *just barely* make out the eyelets on the front fork
in the second picture here: https://goo.gl/photos/NFB2MPCKR3ZdKK796

Also, if I understand the older thread about the Tubus Tara correctly, the
upper eyelets don't actually allow it to be mounted level, so it'd be
necessary to buy the mid-fork eyelets that Tubus sells for this very
purpose if I go that route.

[RBW] Seeking advice (and WTB) front lowrider rack and panniers for canti Sam

2016-05-23 Thread kielsun
Hi Folks,

I am looking for advice on (and I WTB) front lowrider racks for my canti
Hillborne. I am mostly interested in lowrider racks like the Tubus Tara or
Duo. Riv's HAR is nice, as are the Nitto Campee and Big Front Rack, but
they're probably too pricey for me, even used, unless you're feeling super
generous!

I also WTB waterproof panniers. I'm open to anything that'll look
not-too-horrible with my orange Sam.

Please reply off-list with any for sale offers.

And please reply on-list with any advice. I'll take it all. Although I have
owned my Sam since '09, I have zero experience touring or running lowriders
w/ panniers. Are there any other cheaper alternatives I should consider
aside from those listed above? My rear rack is a Nitto R-14, and I have a
Nitto mini-front that I could use, too, if it works in concert with
lowriders.

Thanks for any help!

[RBW] Re: Ride Report & Musings on Bicycling as Joy

2016-05-21 Thread kielsun
Great replies, folks. Love the funometer and bug quotient, and I'm glad to
hear I'm not alone in losing my joy for a little while.

Eric, I'm a couple of shifters and derailleur cables from putting the
finishing touches on a buildup of a free Rockhopper frame I scored off
Baltimore CL. I live about two miles from Robert E. Lee Park, and I'll be
sure to hit the trails over there for you!

Also, great to make some Baltimore-area connections. It'd be fun to get
together for a ride one day.

[RBW] Ride Report & Musings on Bicycling as Joy

2016-05-20 Thread kielsun
Here's a rather lengthy "ride report" from my ride with co-workers for
National Bike to Work Day. It's really more a reflection on how my reasons
for biking have changed over the years. Please feel free to respond with
similar reflections of your own.

- - - - - - - - - -

I lived in Baltimore City for about a decade, and for several of those
years, I was a bike commuter. My steed, a rattle-can-brown early 80s Trek
single-speed conversion, was light and fast. I ran 23mm Gatorskins pumped
to 100 psi. I darted between cars and blew through lights. I rode without a
helmet. I did everything that I wouldn't dream of doing now and I didn’t
think twice about it. I just needed to get to work, and I was often late,
so I needed to get there as quickly as possible.

A few years into my decade in the City, I bought a car, a faded gold '97
Corolla that had been through the ringer. I handed my friend Amy a crisp $1
bill and she handed me the title. (That was the second $1 car I'd bought in
my life, the first being an '83 Civic, "Norm," that I bought off a college
roommate. A couple years later, the Glendora CA Police Department towed it
while I was out of the country and I never saw it again. But that's another
story.)

Once I had the car, my bike commuting days slowly came to an end. I gave
every excuse in the world as to why I stopped riding to work, but they
didn’t really add up to much beyond indifference. And that indifference,
I've realized, stemmed from the fact that biking had become a strictly
point-a-to-point-b venture. It was all utility and no joy--which is
particularly sad because of how joyfully my biking life began:
destinationless, meandering rides through the South Dakota countryside, all
gravel roads, one hand on the handlebar and the other clutching a fishing
rod or BB gun.

So I guess the point of all this is that I went on a bike ride this
morning, and it was fun. I met my co-workers at a quarter past six. We rode
five winding miles through suburban neighborhoods, down roads I'd never
traveled, walked our bikes through holes in fences at the end of dead end
streets, avoided traffic at all costs. Our destination was the Towson pit
stop for National Bike to Work Day.

During my bike commuting days, self-righteousness stirred from deep within
anytime I caught wind of this annual tradition. Co-workers would go out of
their way to tell me, the only biker guy they knew, that they were planning
to ride. They'd brush the dust off of their hybrids and mountain bikes and
squirt some WD-40 on the chains. On the day of, they'd text pictures of the
commute, and they'd stop by my classroom to see if I'd gotten their
messages. Some years, I'd even go out of my way to take the bus on that
day, imagining that it was some sort of a statement. In my youth,
everything had to be exclusively mine.

But today, I didn’t think about any of that. My Sam felt better than ever.
My co-workers and I smiled and laughed and talked, mostly about past bike
rides, and we made plans for future rides, too--adventures we’ll go on
together. And while I’ve been joyfully riding my bike again now for years,
today I bid official farewell to the jaded rider of my early 20s, the one
who didn’t remember how much joy could come from hopping on a bicycle with
one goal, to just ride.

[RBW] Re: Let's see your sage Sams

2016-05-16 Thread kielsun
I have an orange Sam and the original bar tape was a sort of sage-turquoise
color--it looked great. I'm imagining orange tape, possibly with amber
shellac, or the burnt orange with clear, would look fantastic on your bike.
Maroon with clear would look cool, too, possibly with some grey mixed in
for good measure.

Congrats on the new-to-you steed!

Looking for some bar end shifters for a Riv-ish mountain bike project. If

Thanks a lot!

[RBW] Re: Need your advice on headsets

In my non-expert personal experience, Tange headsets last for a very long
time. Five years for an improperly installed $30 headset is pretty damn
good. Get a new one installed properly and you'll get plenty more.

[RBW] Re: Maryland area supported Century rides and also unsupported Brevets this spring, summer and fall 2016.

2016-04-26 Thread kielsun
I'm in the Baltimore area and would definitely like to connect with some
folks who are on the "just ride" side of things this summer. I stopped by
Gravel and Grind a couple of weeks back to snag parts for a new Albatross
cockpit on my Sam, and the guy helping me really went above and beyond in
terms of suggesting rides, etc. He also mentioned that they have a profile
on ridewithgps.com. Their user account is gravelandgrind, if I'm not
mistaken, and there are several fun-looking routes posted on there. They
also do group rides on many Sunday afternoons, and I'm hoping to join them
one of these weeks.

Re: [RBW] Re: Gardian article about the changes in cycling culture...

2016-04-21 Thread kielsun
In the opening paragraphs of the article, he states:

"Cycling in the UK has changed massively in the past few years. Mostly for
the better. Cycling as a mode of transport has really taken off in
London...The infrastructure is improving beyond recognition. It’s
incredible to see that cycling has become a normal, unquestioned part of so
many people’s lives."

Then, he spends the rest of the article talking about the other changes in
cycling that are *not *"mostly for the better"--the competition, interest
in racing, et cetera. It seems like an editorial issue to me--a lack of
cohesiveness in the message and stance of his article--rather than him
saying cycling is all *bad *now, and that it used to be *good*.

Re: [RBW] Re: Annoying unwanted commentary/advice while riding a Rivendell.

2016-04-19 Thread kielsun
I don't think my Sam would generally beat a carbon frame rb in a flat out
race, but it's going to last for a really long time, and I love riding it.
Lots of people have never seen anything like it, and I enjoy explaining the
reasons why it's the right bike for me. If dude likes his bike and seems to
be having a good ol' time on the ride, good for him. To each his own. I
hope his bike makes him as happy as mine does me.

The real issue seems to be his smug attitude, and unfortunately, offering
unsolicited advice in return won't solve much of anything. I love the idea
of offering to swap for a while. I'm definitely giving this a shot if ever
in the situation!

[RBW] Springtime Sam

2016-04-18 Thread kielsun
Hi All--

New member here. Thought I'd share a few reflections and a couple of
pictures from my ride yesterday in northern Baltimore County, MD.

After moving to Baltimore City from Los Angeles in the summer of 2005, I
quickly adopted Prettyboy Reservoir, which provides water to the City but
is located about 40 minutes north, as my place to find peace and solitude.
The surrounding land, roughly 200 square kilometers, is protected from
development and littered with trails and fire roads that lead to the water.
Over the years, I've explored the area almost obsessively, and although
it's technically illegal, I may have dipped a toe into the water once or
twice. I tend to do more hiking than biking, so I haven't explored the
trails too much on my Sam, but I'm planning a ride that will cover fire
trails, some easy single track, and roads. Hoping to give it a go in the
next few weeks.

I was joined on yesterday's ride by my wife, our 16-month old daughter, and
a friend. My Sam performed as I've come to expect--steady and comfortable
throughout the 15 miles despite the 1500 feet of elevation gain (and loss)
and the extra 35 pounds of my daughter and her Thule seat. A couple of days
ago, I changed out my Jack Brown blues in favor of some 47mm Schwalbe
Marathon NOS Kevlar Guards I got for $10 a pop at an incredible LBS,
Baltimore Bicycle Works. They were even cushier and faster than expected.
This week, I'm planning to swap out my moustache bar for an Albatross.
Although I love the moustache for road riding, my wrists aren't feeling
great today. Can't wait to try the ride again with the Albatross setup.

I don't take many photos, but when we stopped for a water and sandwich
break I snapped a quick picture of the rig and a detail of our water bottle
setup. You can check 'em out here:

And here's a map of the ride, just in case anyone is local and wants to

[RBW] WTT: Well-used Brooks B17 Honey for B17 Black

2016-04-04 Thread kielsun
Hi Folks:

New user here. Hoping I did this right.

Looking to trade my used Brooks B17 honey saddle for the same in black. Not
interested in selling for now.

I used it for a few years on my commuter, and it's in decent shape with
scrapes and the like. Still plenty of life left in it.

Please respond off list if you'd like to see pictures.

Thanks!
