2020-08-26 Thread tdusky
Hi Scott
Not sure if you have found what you are looking for yet.
I have a 63cm Rivendell custom Long Low built in 2001 by Joe Stark, I would
be willing to sell.
I am not sure how to compare the models, but mine is the deep red they used
for the customs at the time.
The max tire size you can run is a true 32mm tire.
I am in the Detroit area, let me know if you are interested.
Thanks
Tom

[RBW] Re: Thoughts on the whole low trail thing?

2016-06-15 Thread tdusky
I started doing randonneuring a few yew years ago. And had a bike built by
John Fitzgerald for that purpose.
Low trail, lights and fenders wide tires etc… My current bikes are a 2001
Rivendell custom Long Low, an Atlantis, and a "72 Paramount P13.
The low trail geometry is amazing with or without a front load, it rides so
stable and feels totally correct. See my frame and
bike http://www.fitzcyclez.com/frames.html (that's me with my"Juice")
I hate riding my other bikes and I need to sell them. I am a steel, leather
wool guy all the way and find most of GP's way to be good. But why does he
build these mid trail bikes? Makes me wonder.
BTW my 63cm Long Low dark red custom Rivendell Joe Stark build and my 64cm
Atlantis are for sale. So get a low trail and you can go N-2 :)

You are a great candidate for a custom bike go to http://www.fitzcyclez.com/

cheaper than a Waterford Riv. I have an Atlantis and a custom long low

Don't know how tough back to back centuries are for a commuter and

Bike friendly routes would be the most important thing, I think. I know

Don't know if I'd even dare to do this, but it would be fun and memorable.

[RBW] Re: Leaping onto an Atlantis

2014-03-20 Thread tdusky
I own an Atlantis along with other fine steel bikes. The Atlantis is a
tough stout do anything bike. Everybody has different needs and opinions. I
ride a 64cm bike and weigh 205 lbs. Even for touring with 30 or 40 pounds
it feels stout. As a bike gets larger it flexes more, frame builders go
with larger diameter tubes as the frame gets larger and the riders weight
increases. I owned a 61cm Atlantis for a few years until I traded it for a
64. I found the 64 to have a slightly better ride. I like lively but solid
bikes. The Atlantis is solid but anything but lively. At 130 pounds the
Atlantis will feel like a boat anchor. What size tires do you plan on
using? The Atlantis is best for 38mm plus, It looks a bit silly with
smaller tires. Look for something used and save about half the money.

[RBW] Re: 2 Top Tube Observations

2013-02-02 Thread tdusky
Top tubes greatly stiffen the frame. Large people carrying heavy loads on
big bikes makes good sense. If any one of those qualifiers goes away you
have an unnecessarily stiff frame. Lively frames is where it's at for road
feel and ridding enjoyment (that why we ride steel frames). at 6 1 and
210 I do most of riding on a 63cm Long Low custom similar in geometry to
the Ramboulet, that's a solid but lively frame. I also ride a 64cm Atlantis
and I have used it for touring carrying 40+ pounds, it is solid as a rock.
I have a good friend I ride with all of the time who had a 69cm double top
tube Homer who was un happy with the ride, after trading it for a 67cm
frame it came to life and he loves it, keep in mind he is not a small man.
Double top tubes might look cool but seldom make sense.

[RBW] Re: Metal fender coinflip: Stainless or Aluminum?

2012-12-13 Thread tdusky
2 things not mentioned yet.
Aluminum fenders can be easily adjusted for a perfect line with your tire
by slightly pulling open (decreasing overall radius) or
pinching (increasing overall radius) the fender. Stainless fenders are too
rigid to bend.
I have a set of Honjos on one bike and a set of Bertholds on another bike
and I like both. for all of the reasons previously stated.
I did have the stays crack on the front Berthold fender at the screw holes.
I replaced it with some Honjo hardware and stay. I would go with the Honjo
hardware for durability.

 Hi Sean

I was riding the 64cm Atlantis with Noodle Bars. Your handlebars choice
depends on your riding style, and comfort, experiment and find what works
for you. I have tried mustache bars and found my hands getting numb and the
positions awkward, where others just love them. I have 5 bikes all
with mustache bars and one with albatross bars I use for short trips to the
store and around my neighborhood. Good luck.

Most Riv customs have a lot drop 80mm like mine a long low not built for
me, but it is the best riding bike I ever rode. Conversions with low bottom
brackets are not recommended
see… http://www.freewebs.com/650b/conversions.htm. Rivendell models are
very stoutly built, for someone at 135 pounds they would not be a good
bike, way too stiff, unless you want to carry over 100 pounds of stuff then
the Homer would be a good choice. But with the custom they may have been
made lighter. Contact Rivendell and see if you can find out how much the

At that price you can't go wrong, if it is too big just find someone with a
56 cm frame and do a swap. I owned a 61cm Atlantis for 4 years and it

Ok. So here is the situation. I have been looking for an Atlantis for a
while. Well I guess looking isn't the right word. Perhaps dreaming is a
more appropriate descriptor. To be honest, I haven't really thought that an
Atlantis was going to be in my price range at the current moment. Not
without selling off a few of the bike I have, and as my wife has learned,
selling off bikes isn't a strong point of mine. Anyway, now out of the blue
I have stumbled upon an opportunity to purchase a complete Altantis
forwait for it.$1000. Here are the specs:

 Nitto Technomic Stem
Nitto Noodle handlebars with new tape
 Front rim: Bontrager 36 spokes
Rear rim: Velocity Synergy 36 spokes
 Hubs: Phil Wood hubs
Tires: Schwalbe Marathon Plus (basically new)
 Sugino XD crankset
 Phil Wood BB
 Rear derailleur: Shimano Deore XT
Shimano Cantis (couldnt tell what model)
 Saddle: Brooks premium leather
 SKS fenders

It seems like an amazing price. I have met the guy, he seems like a
totally straight up person. Now here is the dilemma. First, the frame is a
 58. I have a Surly LHT (which of course I'd sell...maybe) which is a 56cm.
Fits me great. My PBH is 83.84, but lets call it 84. According to the
sizing charts I've seen Rivendell would put me on a 56-58cm frame. But,
this just seems big to me. I know this has been discussed countless time
before, but I am really concerned that a 58 would be too big for me to
ride comfortably. I took the bike on a test ride, and with the current stem
and setup it definitely felt too large. But, I did have a fistful post
showing with my legs extended - albeit barely. The other main issue with
the bike is that both of the rear rack braze-ons have broken off. As the
seller described it, one of the braze-ons was broken off when he purchased
the bike, and the other broke off due to the undue stress on a cross
country trip. I looked at the damage and it really doesn't seem to be an
issue, or to be that diffucult to fix. I have a frame builder in town who
would be able to make short work of it...although I'm not sure what it
would cost. Finally, the paint has some wear. There are several chips. It
actually looks way better than I thought it would considering the price.
But, it does have character. So given what I have laid out...am I an
idiot for having second thoughts about jumping on this? If the bike didn't,
do you think i would be able to get my money back if I had to sell it? Help
a confused brother out here. Thanks All!

[RBW] Re: Was your RIV sizing right on?

61 and 63. I spoke with 2 people at Rivendell including Grant and they both
suggested I go with the 61. Well the bike always felt small and crowded. I
found some to trade with last year, so now I have the 64. I am really

In my mind I have two options that would work, either a Rolly Polly
(provides a match with the rear tire) or a Ruffy Tuffy (a near match
with the rear). The bike will be on the road the majority of the
time. However, I do anticipate riding on some local trails that are
covered with stone dust (such as the Erie Canal Towpath Trail).

From what I can gather, the Rolly Polly is going to be lighter and
feel more lively than the Ruffy Tuffy (which I've read a number of
people describe as feeling dead). However, given the fact that I
will be riding this tire on the stone dust trails, might I be wise to
go with the thicker heavier tire?

 Thanks for your thoughts.

exaggeration, but seriously, I've found that the fatter the tire, the
harsher the ride if you overinflate); this after having let the
heavyweight wheelset sit for weeks while I rode the Rhyno Lites with
the new 330 gram, 35 mm Kojaks. I must say that the combination of 800
gram rims with 800 gram tires (both rim and tire are the Lite
 versions) and 200 gram tubes makes a, ahem, difference -- a 3 1/2 lb
difference between the two wheelsets, I estimate. This wheelset is
wonderful on sandy terrain and it rolls very well on the flats, both
on pavement and on choppy but firmish dirt, but as soon as you
encounter an incline, man do you feel that weight! I emphasize: the
Big Apples roll very, very will for such a wide carcass with a
protective belt -- I push along on the flats on firm surfaces in a
46/20 for a 67 cruising gear, compared to 70 to 75 for a road bike
with nice tires. But again, tilt upward, and wham, gravity intervenes.
(Btw, Newton posited gravity as a placeholder for his theory; a mere
name to signify that one body moved toward another in proportion to
their respective masses; but he said quite explicitly that he had no
idea what cause, if anything, was behind this word and, further, he
says explicitly in the Principia that action at a distance -- ie,
physical action without actual contact of bodies -- was, quite
literally, unthinkable.) Whatever gravity may or may not be, those
BA and SnoCats sure feel like cold molasses on uphills.

Long windup. Those of you who ride 60 mm Big Apples or similar tires:
how do you find them on hills? What pressures do you use on pavement,
and what is your weight? -- of course, that decides how firm the tire
has to be. Would I be better off with lighter and narrower rims (wish
I hadn't sold those Salsa P35s!) at the expense of less sidewall
 support?

The new 42 Noodles felt noticeably more natural than the 46s they
replaced. More generally, the Fargo is set up very nicely: it feels
very natural even though the bar is some 4 to 5 cm higher than on
the benchmark Rivs. On pavement I spend most of my time in the hooks,
for with the bars this high, even the hoods seem rather tippy unless
I bend my elbows, a natural inclination.

The BB7s are powerful but lack the nice, smooth and easily modulated
control that good cantis have -- by good cantis I mean either old
Shimano wide profiles or those IRCs that Riv sells. And you have to
keep bending the g-d disks back into plane, at least if, as I do, you
very frequently carry the wheels off-bike in the back of your car. I'd
prefer a bit more weight and thickness for disks that didn't bend out
of plane so easily. OTOH, with riding in sandy soil and swapping
between 44 and 27 mm wide rims, the disk system makes up for its
defects, at least for my taste.

Canti brakes are good. They can offer more clearance for fenders and/or

[RBW] Re: That naming thing with production Rivendells

2011-10-13 Thread tdusky
I have a Rivendell custom, I often ride with a friend who has a A.
Homer Hilsen and often people come up to admiring our bikes and always
ask me what model my Rivendell is when I say a custom they ask which
model? Many people don't even know what means. I have had it for 10
years when the only production frame they sold was the Atlantis $950
back then.

On Oct 13, 5:54 am, Bruce Herbitter bruce.herbit...@gmail.com wrote:
With the lugged steel construction, Walnut Creek geometry and fatter tires

also say by Rivendell in small letters under the model name, or (like

that he wanted an Atlantis to be an Atlantis, etc.

Now that I have my A. Homer Hilsen built up (pics soon!), I see the wisdom
in it. I mean, it's says A. HOMER HILSEN in big letters on the downtube; a
big ole AHH on the seattube; and a dedicated Hilsen badge on the headtube.
It's gonna take me all day to explain *that *name..can you imagine what
happens if I try to explain it's actually a Rivendell?

So yeah, between you and me and the lamppost it's a Rivendell, but for the
rest of the universe..it's a Hilsen.

   Dear Rivendell Owners Bunch;

Dad and I were supposed to go bicycle camping in Traverse City this
   weekend,
but when I came down with an upper-respiratory infection we decided it
   was
best if the trip was cancelled and I was given a chance to rest.  I
   didn't
take that chance, and besides this terrible cough, runny/congested nose
   and
a slight fever, overall, I felt pretty good!  So it was decided to ride
Friday and Sunday.  Both were spectacular rides, but Sunday's was
   perhaps
   most memorable.

I was tired up of roads and traffic and wanted to do something
   different, so
I suggested trying out the Dirt Roads of Washtenaw County.  Dad is all
   about
efficiency, so he wanted to take a more local route - something we could
   get
to without driving.  He's also flexible and up for adventure, so he
   agreed
to letting me drive us to the WashCo Dirt Road ride.  I also invited
   Tom,
thinking that he'd enjoy the morning air and it would be good for him
   and
   dad to hang out.

We started packing and preparing around 8 am Sunday morning, each
   wearing 4
or 5 layers of wool, and boy, did we need it.  The temperature was
   around
42* when we left, but warmed to about 47* by the time we arrived.
Thankfully, this was a short commute, maybe 25 minutes away from home,
   but
because of searching for an enigmatic Kinko's to make copies (which we
   never
found) of our map, it ended up taking us close to an hour.  Thankfully,
   Tom
is an artist and works quickly, so we had a detailed working map to ride
by.  We parked the Land Rover at a local cafe and had our morning intake
   of
fresh mushroom and spinach quiche.  It was delicious, just what we
   needed to
   get our engines going.

We picked a 40-ish mile route, made up almost entirely dirt roads and
started our journey in the town of Dixboro, riding almost immediately
   into
densely wooded forests mixed with golden farm country and spattered with
crystal-clear lakes.  The foliage created beautiful and vibrant scenery
   and
coupled with the crisp wind, we could feel and see the beginnings of
   fall.

There's more to see and be a part of, including huge wild llamas,
catch-me-if-you-can deer and foraging for the most delicious apples I've
ever tasted.  There's also a Rivendell Atlantis, Saluki and an A. Homer
   Hilsen.

   Photos here.

   I hope you enjoy :)

Many of the parts are new or nearly new.  I bought the frame from a

frame and in excellent shape with just some minor paint scrapes on the
chainstay.  It has never been crashed and has been well taken care of

So the frame, fork, headset, seatpost and stem were all purchased
 used, but in excellent condition.

I once wore most of the rubber off of a Ruffy Tuffy. It started it's
life on the front and moved to the back. As Ann stated if you have
fenders you don't look at your tires. I happened to turn my bike over

number of spots. So I would think the average customer that Grant has
wears out their tires more, because many of them use fenders.

I know just the place to locate the factory. There is a great history

shake, it does not burn, it does not slide, but it does freeze for a

There is more fresh water than you can imagine. There lot's of roads

My stable also includes a Rivendell long low (similar geometry to the

e-bay! if you are on a budget, adventurous and want a cool ride

Look for a mid 70's or earlier racing bike or frame, In the the late
70's and early '80's criterium geometry dominated the racing market.
In
other words look carefully, you probably want stage race geometry,

[RBW] Re: noodle bars

Those noodle bars are the best. They are so comfortable I often ride
without gloves.
I have on all of my road bikes.
44cm on my Rivendell, 72 Paramount P13 and 70 Pogliaghi
46cm on my Atlantis
48cm on my Santana Tandem

[RBW] Re: RBW Website Down?

Try restarting your router, especially if you are on wireless.
I have similar problems and that always works.
A computer restart can also help.

[RBW] Re: Brooks Saddle question

2009-02-18 Thread tdusky

All of my B17's take about 3 to 5 thousand miles to make them give as
you described, and I weigh 210. I have bought 3 B17's Campion Specials
in the last 3 years and they are all planks. Your weight makes a big
difference on break in time. Also how much conditioners or oil were
put in the saddle, they can soften it up quickly—not good! The leather
makes a difference but not as muck as you got from your saddle. If you
like the way your saddle feels you are lucky to have it broken in, but
beware too much oil or or conditioners can make the leather so soft
that it wont hold the proper shape. I bought a used saddle from e-bay
tat was barely used but the leather was too soft to hold it's proper
shape, I returned it to the seller. A little bit of proofhide and a
lot of miles is what works. Owning a new Brooks saddle is not for the
impatient.
Bet of luck

  Subject: [RBW] Brooks Saddle question

I just bought a used Brooks B17 and I'm curious how it should feel
before I raise a stink. Seller claimed only 250 miles on the saddle,
so I assumed it would be super tight, yet it feels to me like its
saggy. When I press in the area of the saddle just behind where the
soft parts land, i.e. the widest part of the saddle, should it give?
This one gives so much that the side flaps flare out a fair bit.

  -Original Message-

Some Brookses break in a lot more quickly than others, and can
overshoot to being uncomfortably saggy, with the sides splaying out
whenever you put weight on it.  I have one of this kind on my
fixie, and I restored its comfort by drilling and lacing the
flaps.  It helps tremendously in retaining the structure of the
saddle, and brought this one back to life.

I have never touched the tension bolt on that saddle.  In my
experience, it is easy to overdo it and overstress the rails,
  shortening their life.
