Subject: [RBW] Road Trip to Tennessee and Maybe Georgia!

Tonight, over a pitcher of Detroit's finest brew, Ghetto Blaster, a
friend and I decided to take a road trip down south so we could have
an epic cycling adventure. Things have been a little rough recently
and considering the 4*F weather weare having in Michigan there's no
chance at getting a long ride in.

So I need your guidance and advice on good paths, trails, food spots
and anything else you can think of between those two states. Odds are
we'll be driving down to Atlanta - where it's supposed to be sunny
with highs close to the 60 degree mark all weekend long - yay! :)

Thanks in advance for your help!

Ami

Even if he did bang on the van, what of it? The van was forcing him

Apply the brakes, give the much larger vehicle, right or wrong, the right of
way, and continue on. Better to live to fight another day. He is absolutely
right to demand his space in the lane. But so what?! If you're in your Honda
Civic and a large truck turns in on you what will you do? Apply the brakes.
You want to get in someones face in some sort of road rage, get in a fight and
most likely take an ass kicking over that? Even if you win you lose.
No doubt about it, a lot of Britains cycling lanes are a joke, a lot of narrow,
oddly directed streets, never intended for cars etc., which makes a bad
situation worse. I'm a big guy w/ 4 years in the 82d Airborne and if it comes
to it, I'll kick your ass, or at least am willing to take an ass kicking if
someone is willfully trying to hurt me, but up to that point will do everything
to avoid that.

My first brevet of the year will be the Birkie 200k in March. This
will be my 4th time riding it. The first time I did it it rained for
every single kilometer of the ride. The second time it rained for most
of the ride. Last year it was gorgeous and I was able to finish in
just under 8hrs. This year... who knows what the weather will do or
how I'll choose to ride it. If my rando bike is finished and together
I'll ride that but if not I may ride the QB. There's really only one
climb so it's doable on the QB. If I ride the Hilsen I may opt to do
it in platform pedals. I did a 200k last year like that and it wasn't
 so bad. We'll see.

Anyway, congrats on the brevet William. I'm at work so I can't view
the pictures but I'll check them out when I'm back home tonight.
Thanks for posting your report and link to the pictures on the list.

But it is a list about Riv stuff and nothing but Riv stuff (and how we use it,
which is- to me- often the more interesting discussion).

We all have other resources for talking about other stuff- back channel
discussions if we really want to talk to particular list members about other
non-Riv stuff, and of course family and friends. I like having the specific
focus.

And, of course, it's Jim's list and he gets to set the rules. ;-)

I'm aware of how the discussions began and how it arched to where it ended,

First season with it, so not much time to truly assess it. However it
was purchased and meets needs perfectly for a steel ride that can
handle harsh winter conditions. This keeps my fair weather bike, a
71cm Nobilette custom, out of the roughest elements the Midwest can
offer. After riding various bikes that have just been two small,
62-64cm, for the previous decade or so, I have just evolved/converted
to Riv sizing, comfort, and velosophy.
This Bilenky at it's size matches closely and I expect you will find
the same with yours when it arrives in the near future.

Sincerely,

Nice bike. I like the simplicity. I found indexed shifting doesn't
hold up in NE winters. But as soon as the road temps warm enough to
produce slush I couldn't imagine riding without fenders. I love my
Bilenky coupled tandem and have been thinking about getting a single
retrofitted.

Mostly in the winter I focus on yoga and snow shoeing, since I'm way
out in the boonies. I keep thinking about buying a set of studded
tires, but then I turn on the weather report and see that the
overnight lows will be -25 and the daytime hi around zero and I think,
maybe not right now.

The developed world's been enjoying incredibly cheap energy courtesy
of the Carboniferous Period for the past 150 years. The entire
economy of the developed world is completely, inextricably,
irrefutably based upon it.Fossil fuel deposits are kind of solar
energy stored in battery cells- but think solar power, compressed
concentrated over ~100 million of years. Incredibly potent. It's
been stored there waiting to be exploited for another 300 million
years, like a tycoon's fortune willed to a lucky grandchild. The
thing is, we've been pissing through it, just like a rich kid
squandering the family's wealth. Now some are betting that
technology is going to magically save us from the coming energy
crisis. But that kind of thinking is like the rich kid, realizing
he's all but chewed through his entire inheritance, deciding to head
to Las Vegas in a panic and betting the remainder at the roulette
table.

Modern solar technology is great but it won't fill the fuel tank of
the modern world. There is no watt-per-watt replacement for fossil
fuels, specifically coal, oil and methane. Nothing that matches the
net energy gain of extracting the concentrated/compressed sunlight
artifact from the earth and burning it. Once these potent energy
sources are gone, they are gone, and subsequent generations will be
left holding the bag in the form of a more barren, more contaminated,
less bio-diverse world.Civilization and it's energy consumption
will gradually downsize as fossil fuels are depleted. It won't be
the first time the pinnacle of civilization has ebbed. It's happened
all over the world, again and again, often for the same reason-
depleted resources. The vast technological advancements of the past
century+ were made possible by the easy extraction and combustion of
fossil fuels, and the maintenance of these technologies is totally
dependent on a steady supply of this cheap energy. Reduced
dependence on this energy is not going to be made possible by
increasing our need for it by increasing our initiative to develop new
exotic technologies. It's like a drug addict trying to ease the
desire for drugs by taking more drugs.

Environmental concern is a compelling reason to walk or ride a bike,
even if choosing to do so for enjoyment is probably more common. The
fact is, reducing fossil fuel consumption while maintaining our
economy is a hard if not impossible dilemma we're facing.Maybe you
won't make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things, but to
me, it's a matter of which side of a hard problem you chose to live
your life.

Not so fast.concentrating solar thermal breaks that misconceived
limitation of solar.  The sun heats up a reservoir of working fluid.
The hot working fluid runs a steam generator turbine just like a
combustion based power plant.  In many cases the power plants
connected to solar thermal arrays are regular power plants that had
run on combustion.  Those power plants run 24/7, even though the sun
is only up 10 hours a day.  We need a lot of those plants to make a
big dent, but zero battery technology is needed to make that work.
They are approaching the magical dollar a watt price point for that
technology.  When that happens, China tips to solar because then it's
cheaper than building more coal plants, and then everything
 changes.

heat is getting to you. The trick for the first 2 or 3 sessions is to stay
in the room for the entire class and just get used to the heat.

The advantages to Bikram, in my opinion, is that the heat helps to loosen
the muscles and that allows you to stretch a little further. I've also found

Good luck with that. I had a General Motors mini van 6 years ago that
I could do that with. When I got my Ford Mini 2 Years later I
couldn't do it any more becauseof a bench rear seat an not enough
length for my bikes anyway. Then went to roof racks.

We are now looking at a full sized van. I don't think my bikes would
fit inside a wranger without lowering the seat .. then I don't see the
length with a rear seat.

Since buying my Rivendells I've had a nightmare with roof mounts too.
The only rack that works well is my tandem rack for fender
clearance. I found a simliar design at draftmaster which is made for
bikes with fenders. At 114 bucks I may have to buy some to replace my
thules.

I forgot to mention that locking the bikes to the roof has worked
well ...though I hate the bugs and such.. the bra's just add wind
resistance and kill gas milage dramatically.

Kelly

Good luck with that.

Standard loading procedure:

1. Take front wheel off. Lean front wheel on side of vehicle.
2. Slide Homer in trunk of vehicle, back wheel first. Homer must be
diagonal to fit fully.
3. Place front wheel in remaining open space in vehicle securely.

RGZ - why not build a stand for your wheels? Sounds like a fun winter
project and an excuse to go down to the hardware store ;)

For us tall guys, it helps if you have an SUV / Station Wagon.

I've contemplated loading it in a car with the rear seats folded. To
do this I'd remove both front and rear wheels, lower the seat post and
stem and then slide it in.

I'm considering a car-rack/trailer hitch for vacationing this spring
and summer ... anyone have any experience with Yakima or Thule tow-
hitch racks?

Golf, but that is with one rear seat removed and the other folded
down. Even with that the seat is like 1/8 from the headliner and
people cringe when I shut the back hatch.

Smaller than the TC above and you a likely looking at seat removal,

I drive a 2010 Prius and have no trouble carrying either two full size
bikes, or our Bilenkey, coupled touring tandem inside the car. Last
summer we went from Vt to MI and back with the tandem inside our car.
I have a Saris hitch rack that quickly carries two single bikes or the
tandem in two parts, on the rack. My Thule Tandem roof rack, which is
a rebranded ATOC Carrier, can carry the tandem, or a single bike,
with fenders, on the roof. I have also used a Thule carrier
(Criterium) that grips the down tube and therefore allows for fenders
and quick access. I easily carry a 19 1/2 foot expedition canoe on
top of my Prius, and the hatchback makes accessing equipment pretty
easy.

Last month, I drove up to an outlet and bought a full size, seven foot
Christmas tree. The seller was amazed as I quickly tied up the entire
tree, slid it inside my car and closed the hatchback for the drive
home. You can't do that with an SUV.

Frankly, an SUV like the Jeep, is the least useful shape for carrying
cargo, and the van and mini van, while quite useful for many
applications, are overkill for people who occasionally carry large
items.

Hate to burst your fantasy but a friend has a four door wrangler and
it was never that easy to get our bikes inside...we're both 6'3,
riding ~63cm bikes with ~85cm saddle heights and they couldn't fit
vertically even with front wheel removed. The Wrangler cabins are
deceiving short, especially behind the rear seat. Usual procedure was
to remove our front wheels, fold down the rear seat, and lay the bikes
down flat, one on top of the other. He ended up buying one of the
thule racks that attaches to the spare tire mount.

Best way to haul your bike? Ride there!

and quick access.

Frankly, an SUV like the Jeep, is the least useful shape for carrying
cargo, and the van and mini van, while quite useful for many
applications, are overkill for people who occasionally carry large
 items.

I'd love to see it. I'd hope to be able to consider buying one.

 This is rather long, sorry.

 I've owned a buncha Ritcheys.
 • lugged road frame from '76
 • custom fillet frame from '81
 • custom tandem fillet from '81
 • non-custom road from '89
 • custom mtn bike from '87

And my then girlfriend/now wife had a road frame, too.

The first year of Rivendell, I had to sell EVERYTHING to pay bills. A
disaster, but I had great replacements. Here are some observations on
his frames---not presented as facts, just obbies:

 1. The lugged one was one he made for the Palo Alto Bike Shop, then a
hotshotshop (may still be, I dunno). They were Reynolds, lugged, and
undecaled, but I got the decals and put them on. I hear Jobst Brandt
had a hand in designing the decals.

 2. Before I got that frame, the fastest local guy in our club, Rick
Baldwin, had three, with the fillet stem and all. One was a criterium
bike, with fork crown points on the outside that extended halfway down
the forkblades, all the better to stiffen the forks more, to resist
high g-forces in criteriums. Mostly it was Tom showing off, and he had
a right to, and did it well. This bike was a 5-speed, and I saw Rick
outsprint Greg Lemond to win the Berkeley Criterium in '77 or '78.
Greg then was riding Junior gears, and Rick probably had a 53 x 13,
but even so, it was impressive, and the last time I saw Lemond race
and not win, and I saw tons of wins.

 3. My custom was made of Columbus SP tubing and had a fillet stem. The
frame was purplish and the stem was green. I stretched my budget by
ordering that and the tandem at the same time, in '80. I made time
payments on them both and paid them off in '81. The single cost me
$500, and the tandem was $1200, and had the most extensive lateral and
cross bracing you could ever imagine. It was as though he was looking
for ways to increase his work, but it was a beautiful frame. The
tubing was straight gauge unbranded CrMo with the same 1.25 downtube
and 1.125 top tube and 1 headset that used to be considered oversize,
and that Riv still uses today. There was no noticeable wiggle in the
frame, even though these dimensions would be considered way too skinny
these days (by anybody except JHeine). If we ever do a tandem, we'll
 likely do the same.

 3. When I was ordering my custom, I asked Tom, Should I get short
reach or standard? Short was the rage and I didn't want to be left
behind. Tom said, Get regular, it's more useful. More clearance.
Short is for specialty bikes. Now short is normal, but it's still
as limiting as it was then.

 4. I could fit 32mm tires, easily.

 5. On the tandem, Tom tried to talk me into sidepulls, but I held out
for cantilevers. Tom probably didn't brake as much as I did.

 6. I put a TA triple on the tandem, 54 x 49 x 32, and used an outer
ring f or the middle. If you did this you could bolt the middle and
outer ring together, stiffening the rings. It was one of those insider
 tricks of the day.

 7. I ordered my custom mtn frame way too small, but what did I know? I
got a 49. Low bb, steeper angles than normal (73 seat 72 head), and
with 126mm spacing instead of the std (of the day) 130. He built it at
 130. I called him about it, and expected he'd spread it, but he said,
I'll have another one to you in a week, and he did.

 8. There wasn't QUITE enough tire clearance, and Tom said, Bring it
by and I'll fix it. I brought it by, he put the chainstays down on a
wooden bench, on the inside of the chainstay he placed a mallet of
some kind probably shaped to do this, and whacked it super hard three
times with a big hammer, as I watch and listened afraid of the damage
and afraid to look. Then he repeated it on the other side. It made a
 good case for steel tubes.

 9. The custom mtn frame I returned with the 130 was used to win one
Nat'l Championship, and then another guy rode it to many top finishes.
I saw it in the race photos. It was cream frame, blue seat tube panel.

Tom was by a few months ago and rode a 62 Hunqapillar with Alba bars
 in the local hills.

He was a strong influence for many years. I don't mean to say I'm
beyond that now, because there isn't any beyond Tom Ritchey when it
comes to bikes. He and his company are on a different path than we
are, but I've always liked Tom and I always look forward to seeing him
when he stops by, a couple of times a year by surprise.

64cm Bomba (maybe should have gotten a 60. When I put on the Small

Absolutely brilliant for fully loaded touring, though.)
67cm Hilsen (should be delivered tomorrow!)

I've found that the double top tube is the secret to my success and
frame longevity. I've grown to love the look. The stiffness and
support improvement is indisputable.

I've toured, fully loaded, self-supported, on the Bomba every summer

Grant designs great riding bikes that are flexibly configurable.

I think there have been a couple of handling or discussion of trail
threads where this has popped up before. These are a couple points
 I've
 probably made before...

Rivendells (and I include all of the designs, not simply custom
 models) have
a similar quality of ride. While a Roadeo is different from a
 Bombadil,
there's an underlying set of design tenets which seems pretty
 consistent.
For me, in my riding conditions, they are superlative. They are
 stable,
predictable, solid handling bikes that generally keep me out of
 trouble, and
then react appropriately when I'm silly enough to get my self into
 it. If
they didn't handle well, nothing else would matter.

The handling and ride is a sum of a all parts. It isn't _JUST_
 trail, head
angle, bb height, chainstay length, angles, and length. It's all
 of those
things. You cannot just change one aspect and have the same bike.
 The
bicycles are a product of those variables, plus the things which
 Grant has
learned in the XX number of years of plotting out frames, testing
 them and
thinking pretty deeply about the results.

The bicycle designs have grown to be incredibly versatile. Ten
 years ago,
the longer reach brakes weren't availalble. The clearances which we
 now
enjoy were only possible with canti brakes. Finding a 28mm 700C
 tire was
difficult, let alone a higher quality 30mm+ tire. The limiting
 factors have
been the components, and Grant has always been pushing the envelope
 in this
particular corner of the bicycle world. Add to that his commitment
 to high
quality bags and racks and you end up with a useful and continually
 variable
design. As I've repeated too many times, both my Quickbeam and
 Hilsen have
been errand bikes, road bikes, mountain bikes, race bikes and
 brevet bikes
in the time I've had them. Over the past couple years, I've grown
 to feel
that if a bicycle can't be fendered or adapted, it really is not a
 bicycle
in the true sense. In other words, when people ask what my road
 bike is,
I kind of stare at them blankly.

All of this could be done roughly, or quickly, or with a more
 industrial

I know this topic is grossly OT, but the idea that carbs, even refined
carbs, are somehow bad for you is just egregiously absurd: tell it
to the Chinese, Indians, Native Americans, Italians and other groups
whose principal source of food is grains of some sort or another. The
Japanese have very long average life, and it isn't because they are
scarfing down bacon and cheese.

Sit still, quiet, breathe deeply, think peaceful thoughts, cultivate
one-ness with the cosmos -- and be patient, patient, patient: this fad
too shall pass.

Patrick happily and skinnily (at a svelte almost 56, 5'10 in bare
feet, 170 lb) eating his home made French bread with olive oil, salt
and pepper, who believes that a real culprit of dietary sin is
processed foods and who eats very little of them because they are so
g-d disgusting!

The short answer is that carbs create and trigger addiction responses, just
like nicotine, alcohol and other drugs. When you are hooked, you crave them
for all the reasons explained in the book (High insuline, lack of calories
for normal function because most are stored in the fat tissue, etc.)

you're starting with the premise of being an addict, or in the case of
food, people who have most likely been chronically overweight,
unhealthy and/or unfit.  carbs, or any other source of calories for
that matter, do not pose a problem for people who have a healthy, long-
standing relationship with food.  just like beer and wine don't pose a
problem for one who is control of his or her drinking.

I know other authors talk about how to use carbs when excercising, but I'd
be willing to bet that if one takes the time to fully change eating
 paradigms . . ..

It seems to me that those who espouse atkins, taubes, et al. are those
who chronically struggle with weight, health and fitness.  they also
tend to be focused on weight loss and not overall health, as evidenced
 by the diets they embrace.

Most of the truly healthy, fit people i know eat/drink what ever they
want - but it's mostly vegetables, whole grains, nuts,
fruits . ..stuff without nutrition labels. carbs are certainly not
forbidden - two of my friends are outstanding bakers and delicious
bread and cake is always on the table when we eat together.  the
handful of serious athletes (those who train, compete to win) I know
are all vegetarian/vegan.  none of these folks follow a *diet.* I
haven't seen any of them gain or lose significant weight for years.

the other thing they have in common is that they cook *a lot*, which,
for me, is absolutely essential to maintaining a healthy relationship
with food.  In fact, I'd suggest buying a good cookbook, rather than a
*diet* book, for anyone who is serious about repairing their
relationship with food and living a healthier lifestyle.

the past 3 yrs has been wrapped up in randonneuring. My goals for next
 year:

 1. Finish another super randonneur series and finish each brevet a
 little faster.
 2. A sub-14hr 300k.
 3. Do either a 1000k and/or Fleche.
 4. More S36Os.
 5. At least one multi-day bike tour.
 6. Continue to learn how to work on my bike.
 7. Read more.

My main winter goal was to sell my Rambouillet which isn't much of a
goal but it's tough for me to part with stuff and even tougher to
actually deal with selling stuff. I have a bunch of bike parts I need
to sort through and sell. I also need to figure out what I'm gonna
