[RBW] 650b Ram with Hetres, update 1

2012-11-02 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I mounted the Hetre tires on Synergy 650b wheels and swapped out the
calipers to Tektro R559. In the front there is gobs of room--over a cm on
all sides. In the back there is sufficient room with plenty of room up top,
and the minimum clearance is in the chainstays with about 4 mm at minimum
on each side. There should be plenty of room for fenders, as Jay described,
which is great.

The bad news is that the R559 caliper on the rear right side does not have
enough reach. Maybe 1 or 2 mm would do it. In order to take a test ride,
I'm flipping the brake pad in the reverse direction. I don't know how
much of a difference the pad will make if it's upside down, but in that
configuration the brake won't hit the tire. The Tektro brakes have 73 mm
reach, and in theory, there are 75 mm reach brakes, which should hopefully
work.

I've kind of searched around the web and found some IRD B75 calipers, but
they only seem to be available in black right now for the rear. I prefer
silver, but...

I also saw some DiaCompe centerpulls. I've never used centerpulls, but I
could switch to those, since they also claim to have 75mm reach. I would
appreciate any experience with the centerpull brakes in contrast to the
dual-pivot calipers.

If there are other 75 mm reach brakes I should consider, then it would be
much appreciated too (I see BMX-style brakes, but have no idea about how
they would work on a road bike).

Thanks,
Toshi

number but 800a rings a bell. ive used it and its decent especially if need the

I've used a small round file to extend the slot for a little more reach.

Toshi: if you don't mind a hack, try a small rattail file in the pad slots.
I've added a couple of mm to old single pivot sidepulls that way. (Come to
think of it, I added almost 5 mm to the short horizontals on my '99 Joe
fixed that way.)

2012-11-02 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
Hey Bruce,

I still need to route new brake cables because the cables I have now are
too short and swap the cassette because my RD is a road vs mountain on my
other 650b rigs, but I plan a ride this weekend! Look for update 2
hopefully soon! If the test ride goes well, I'll file the hole 2mm. Thanks
to all for the tips!

Re: [RBW] 650b Ram with Hetres, update 1

2012-11-02 Thread Greg J
Toshi,

2 thoughts. First, Hiroshi at Jitensha years ago filed 1-2mm on a brake
slot on one of my bikes. So I think that's fine. But, if you're unsure,
some Mafacs had a vertical (oblong) slot instead of a circular mounting
hole in the yoke, which would give you another 3-4mm. I have one of these
on a 2000 brakeset i'm not using. If you want, I can measure the reach for
you and see if it's long enough.

Greg, also in Oakland, CA, but won't get a chance to get out this weekend.

Re: [RBW] 650b Ram with Hetres, update 1

2012-11-02 Thread franklyn
Toshi,

Another trick I have employed to extend the brake reach is to use mountain
or v-brake style brake shoes/pads instead of road pads. The pivots on the
mountain pads are thinner and the pads can sit lower on the slot--may just
be enough to reach the rim.
