Think of it this way: if you go to another state and buy a widget, their
tax will be on the receipt. There are exceptions (clothing under a certain
amount in NYC for example), but it makes sense.
And Mark in Beacon makes an excellent point - the taxes may be helping
Riv's home state. I'm in NY so I'm not familiar with the California budget,
so let's not get political about it, because I can't hang.

Re: [RBW] Dynamo lights

2019-05-09 Thread Leah Peterson
There are enough of you that have the same understanding so I think it must be
the bike should be shipped to avoid sales tax. But I like a combination of
Roberta and Joe’s ideas - maybe a bunch of us can rendezvous at RBW for a party
of some kind. We can ride our bikes, have a little jamboree with Listers, and
board a plane and have our bikes shipped home. My understanding is it isn’t
hard for Riv to ship a bike since it’s mostly assembled anyway. Roberta - there
are very cheap flights from here to San Fran. Come see your sister and then the
two of us will catch a flight to the Anniversary Mixte party that we have just
invented.

This makes me laugh. We have a slight hint of an anniversary bike of some kind
on the horizon. Somehow, it has become a RED swoopy tubed mixte that we are all
buying - sight unseen - and then there is going to be a fantastic gathering and
riding ceremony where we will all swoop in and claim our special bikes at Riv’s
HQ...which they know nothing about. Who needs marketing when you have customers
with crazy ideas and overactive imaginations?

Hi Leah. When I've traveled and bought stuff out of state, the rule has
always been that if I take it with me, then I pay the tax, and if I have it
shipped then I don't. I doubt California would be any different. It's
always a question of how much to ship versus how much is the tax.

I bought a bike once from an out-of-state dealer---my first Riv, in
fact---and he was kind enough to drive it over the state line into my state
so I could take delivery and not pay the tax. Very kind of him. I
suggested that I pick it up from him in *his* state and we could *say* that
he drove it over the line, but he wanted to do it the honest way. Neither
of those states was California, but again---I can't imagine that California
would be any more lenient, although they might be stricter.

2019-05-09 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Tax rules for internet sales recently changed. From what I understand, in
addition to collecting tax in our State, the company I work for has to
collect sales tax in those States where our sales go beyond a certain set
minimum--a minimum which is different for each State. Kind of a nightmare,
but I suppose there is software that notifies you when you hit the limit,
though not sure if you then still can wait till the following tax year. I
doubt Riv sells enough bikes to Nevada to be a problem--that would take a
lot of anniversary mixtes going to Reno.

(But you don't want to avoid all the tax, or your roads won't get paved!;^)

Re: [RBW] Dynamo lights

2019-05-09 Thread REC (Roberta)
I'm not an accountant and this is not accounting advice... Perhaps there
is a CA accountant here. I work with accounting software, so it's not an
unfamiliar topic to me and I'm not an expert, but then again, I'm not an
accountant and this is not accounting advice... :)

My understanding is that it is the delivery location and nexus (does the
business has a presence in the delivery state?) that determines the sales
tax.

I'll probably fly in, enjoy the party (hopefully we'd have one) and then
have the bike sent to PA. Or I'd buy it from the "sort of local" RIV
dealer, 718 Cyclery, save the shipping but pay NY tax instead. We could do
a day trip from LV--it would be a short and I think inexpensive flight. 9
hour car trip is a LONG trip. But, you think you'd be able to tear
yourself away from your new baby to save $500? I bet you could get them to
ship your bike out right after you leave, so you wouldn't need to wait to
long for the reunion.

No matter what you decide, it will be FUN, I'm sure!

Ryan! You may have just arrived at the very best idea EVER. I’ve got room -
ship all the Anniversary Mixtes to me! You guys will show me how to be a
mechanic, then we will take our first ride on our fleet of AMs together. I will
torture you on Killer Hill (pray it is not summer) and we will come home, you
all can swim or soak in the spa and I’ll cook. At some point, coffee. For sure,
dessert.

This lights up all the pleasure centers in my brain! Everyone will be
interviewed. We will submit it for publication to the Rivendell Reader. We will
start a revolution and red and cream Anniversary Mixtes will dot the US map.
And NONE of us will pay sales tax.

I can see it. Surely it will work out.
Does Rivendell even read this stuff?

If you purchase your bike or take delivery physically in ca you will need to
pay sales tax. If you order it online and you have it ship to you, you will
only pay sales tax if they have an employee in NV.

I cannot imagine you seeing and riding it in CA and not taking it with you
when you’d leave! You’d have Mixte withdrawal symptoms for a week until it
shows up in NV

I’d probably fly in to make my purchase decision and it would be so cool to go
on rides with others from the board!! They would all come out to visit
with you.

Re: [RBW] Dynamo lights

2019-04-30 Thread Peter White
Schmidt, Busch & Müller and Supernova all say that the Velogical dynamo
should not be used with their lights and such use will void the warrantee
on their lights. The Velogical produces too much power at high speeds and
can damage lights built to work with normal dynamos such as the SON,
Shimano, Panasonic, etc.

I much prefer dynamo hubs to any other system I've used, but others who
don't want the cost or expense of dynamo hubs and who don't ride long
distances at night might consider bottle and bb-area dynamos. I've only
used (a) cheap Union and Sanyo bottles and (b) very expensive, top-end 12 v
bottle. The former do indeed drag; consider that you are riding into a 12
mph headwind, or up a slight grade; gear down 1 tooth. The 12 volt dragged
very little but is not relevant. The old Sanyo bb-area dynamos are still
available from time to time on ebay and on lists and they drag less if you
use a smooth tire. Both bottles and bb dynamos will power a modern led lamp
very nicely; I used a bb dynamo on the folder until I finally swapped in a
hub dynamo.

Velogical makes a rim-driven "bottle" that puts out less power but puts out
enough for most modern LED headlights; and it is very light and drags
little from what I have read.

[RBW] Dynamo lights

2019-04-30 Thread Madam Xylene
All four of my bikes have dynamo hubs. When I got my Cheviot I initially had
battery lights which were ok but I kept spacing out on recharging or being out
later and darker than I planned. No worries with the dynamo AND it’s worth
having lights and the extra visibility when riding in shady canyons during
daytime. Even opted to have rear dynamo light.

Re: [RBW] Dynamo Lights

2019-03-31 Thread John McBurney
I somewhat misadvisably decided to open the light to see whether it even
was an LED or incandescent. It has a single LED. The lens is truly
impressive but devishly difficult to get back in with the correct
orientation. Right now it’s together but the lens is vertical. I think it
projected down and was effective enough before I flipped it upside down.
That was partly aesthetic and partly because at the end of a big old Nitto
Campee rack it was getting the crap beat of it and I had to retap the
housing to m4 to keep it on the mount. Flipped it was doomed with the first
rain but a little out of harms way.

I remain impressed - awed- by the depth of knowledge in this group. 🙏🏻
Namaste.

Re: [RBW] Dynamo Lights

2019-03-31 Thread Peter White
The Supernova Triple and the early E3 headlights were just round beams, not
well suited for use in traffic. But starting around 2008 or so they began
to offer the E3 in a "low beam" version. That's when I started importing
them. The Triple is a fine headlight for riding single track. The original
E3 wasn't much good for anything, as the beam was narrow, far too narrow
for use on single track. So the OP's E3 may or may not have a round beam.
If it does, it's best he replace it with a modern headlight. If it has a
"low beam" design, the only advantage to replacing it with the current E3
would be that they are a fair bit brighter. But for relatively flat roads
in an urban setting, the older "low beam" type is a fine headlight. I'd
just keep using it.

If he does decide to replace it, the Supernova taillights from that time
are compatible with modern Supernova headlights. But not with anything
else. So if you opt for any other brand of headlight, you'll need to
replace the taillight as well.

Re: [RBW] Dynamo Lights

The only quibble I would have with the Supernova is that it has what I would
call an “American” beam pattern, which is basically a cone of light that shines
equally up, down, and side to side. All of the quality lights out of Europe
(think Edeluxe) have a cutoff pattern that shines down on the road and to the
sides, but not up (like the headlights on your car). A lot of the power of the
Supernova is wasted shining up to the sky (and into the eyes of oncoming
motorists and cyclists).

A friend has one, though, and likes it. He’s fond of the feature that turns the
three LEDs on in sequence as your speed increases.

I have Edeluxe on four bikes, IQ-X on two. All work very well—light years (pun
intended) better than the incandescent headlight I used for randonneuring and
PBP in 2007.

[RBW] Dynamo Lights

2019-03-29 Thread mcburnjow
I have a question. I recently acquired a lovely Bombadil with a SON dynamo
front hub and Supernova E3 front and rear light. The bike is circa 2008 and so
I assume is the light. I really like having a dynamo light. I have a *lot* of
battery powered lights as I cycle year round night or day. In researching this
light, I gather that Supernova is well regarded. If I order a bright dynamo
light like the Busch and muller IQ-X will I see significant increase in
performance?

[RBW] Dynamo Lights - Sinewave, IQX, Schmidt?

2018-08-19 Thread nathaniel nichols
I have both a B&M IQ-x and B&M Luxos U on my two main rando bikes. I like the
Luxos for very long road rides to charge Garmin or phones/devices while riding
during the day and let the lamp work alone at night. It can definitely charge
and run the light at the same time tho. Another great feature of the Luxos is
the switch mounted on the handlebar, you can turn light on/off or change the
mode of the lamp without having to reach down near the spokes and also if you
need to change different charging wires it can be done from the handlebars area
where the usb dock is. One or two downsides are that it's a big light, so when
I mount it on one side of a rack I can tell there's extra weight tracking that
way, so like most dyno headlights were designed I mounted over the front wheel
on the front of my rack, this puts it in a vulnerable position and I actually
fell on some trail once and broke the outer casing of the light, luckily I
wasn't riding at night. This isn't really a problem tho if you mount it to the
center hole on the fork crown if youre rackless.

On the IQ-x is my bike I use for longer mixed terrain events, which flickers
more at low speeds but doesn't bother me because I can still see where I'm
going. With both of these lights I pair it with a high quality Coast brand head
torch mounted to my helmet, this is good for reading cue sheets or street signs
in the dark. Also good for tight single track etc. But just be cautious you
don't blind anybody around you, I usually ride alone so..  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I haven't used the other 2 lights you mentioned

[RBW] Dynamo Lights - Sinewave, IQX, Schmidt?

2018-08-17 Thread Lum Gim Fong
All I can say is my hanging edeluxe ii dont look anywhere near as bright as the
vendors’ online pics show. Works great though and bright enough. Just not as
bright and uniform as pics show.
IQX is on my radar for next light.

[RBW] Dynamo Lights - Sinewave, IQX, Schmidt?

2018-08-17 Thread Chris Corral
Winter approaches, and as summer wastes away so do our hours of sunlight!

I am looking to outfit my new bike with a tour-worthy lamp and am wondering
if anyone has direct experience or opinions between the B&M IQ-x, Schmidt
Edlux II, and the new Sinewave Beacon (Bacon?). I have personally owned the
IQ-X and taken it on tours across Colorado, New Mexico, old Mexico, and
Western Europe. Through rain, wind, dust and shine it performed flawlessly
and I would buy it again. But I am interested in the USB charging
capabilities and potential performance benefits of the Beacon or Schmidt. I
also know those two have better standlights, with the Sinewave able to run
on a battery cache. My riding is a healthy mix of on/off road, with tours
gravitating towards off-road. I will also use this light on my tandem.

I guess I have two questions.
1) Are the Schmidt and Sinewave worth the price premium over the IQ-X?
2) How is the new Sinewave Beacon anyway?

Re: [RBW] Dynamo Lights and Theft

2013-04-09 Thread Michael Williams
Sorry about your light getting stolen, anything stolen off of your bike
feels personal. My antitheft device is a ball bearing and some Gorilla
Glue in the hex head. The glue sets pretty hard, and Ive tried getting
it out myself as if I were a thief. To actually get it out, I have to
heat it up a bit with a lighter or any heat source I would imagine. If i
were out riding and I needed to adjust my saddle or something on my light,
Id be a bit out of luck. My thing is to just deter someone from stealing
things off your bike because it might take too long.Maybe its stopped
someone before, or maybe Ive just been really luck. Sorry about your
light. -Mike

Gosh, that stinks, this is a fear of mine as i have an edelux and a supernova
and like you i ride my bike to normal places like the doctor, store etc. It
truly sucks, and there are a few things you can do to ward this off (use
security bolts instead of normal allen ones, stick wax or glue in the bolt
heads to make it harder to undo). But nothing is 100% fool-proof if someone
really wants it.

But in the end, we can't live in fear and our bikes are made to be
used/enjoyed, so don't let this dissuade you from replacing it and riding on!

Re: [RBW] Dynamo Lights and Theft

2013-04-08 Thread Alex Zeibot
That sucks! Sorry to hear about that. Well, here in Twin Cities,
Minnesota as soon as new mandatory bike lights law enacted; no functioning
lights on your bike during dark hours, you will be fined $190! That to the
raise of light thefts. Therefore, I had my lights affixed to my helmet and
my messenger bag instead.

[RBW] Dynamo Lights and Theft

2013-04-08 Thread Ryan Ray
I came out of my Dr appointment today to find the 5 zip ties holding the
wire connecting my dynamo hub to my light removed and the wire dangling.
It's just a cheap IQ Fly.

Is light theft like this common? It was on a busy street in daylight. An
Acorn bag was left alone.
