It was a pretty nice day here in Metro DC: sunny, not too windy, high

2:30 I changed my plans and cleaned relubed my chain outside in the
back yard rather than in the basement. We rode down to downtown DC.
Lots of cyclists out, but strangely empty streets as we rode past some
of the well-known monuments and sites like the White House, Capitol
Supreme Court. Plus, of course, the obligatory traditional lap around
Hains Point.

It was in the high 40s in LA when I headed up to Franklin Canyon this
morning on the QB. Switched to 32/19 at Coldwater Canyon Park and rode up
the hill, goofed around in the dirt a little and then came back home. I was
in full Riv kit - MUSA knickers, wool t-shirt, chambray button-down and
wool gloves. Perfect for most of the ride, but then a bit too warm towards
the end as the sun gained strength. It was close to 60 by the time I got
home, headed for a high in the mid-70s once again. It's been so warm and
sunny in So Cal lately. I feel guilty.

Re: [RBW] How cold was your first day ride?

2014-01-01 Thread Anne Paulson
Atlantis (the green one). I listed a mixed-terrain club ride every
weekday this week. This morning I went to the rendezvous. Nobody. I
waited until the appointed time, wearing my pink wool Riv hat to keep
warm in the low 40s chill. Nobody. I gave up hope and went off to the
bathroom, and when I came out there was my best friend on his carbon
fiber bike with the 23 mm wide tires.

We rode up the long steep climb to get to the dirt part. When we were
almost there, my friend spotted a dirt road going down, off to the
side.

What's that?
Waterwheel Canyon. We're supposed to do it on Friday's ride.
Let's do it NOW.

And so we did, adding some more dirt downhill and uphill to the
planned route. Despite his poor taste in bikes, or maybe because of
it, my friend is an excellent bike handler, confidently handling his
narrow tires on the steep gravel roads.

No better way to start off the year than riding with friends.
