Re: [RBW] Intro Post // My 51cm Toyo Atlantis

2024-01-22 Thread Jeremy Suhan
@jason
Y'know what, maybe it is! Lol, I forget. I dunno anything about Rivendells
compared to you folks.

@brenton
Thanks! These are both Carradice Camper Longflaps in green. I love the
rustic look over time (though I think the one in the back was actually
brand new in this photo - first trip!) This bike is heavily inspired by
Ultraromance's old Atlantis, the one on Bikepacking.com, so had to have
'em! I find it is just enough space for a proper trip with cooking
equipment but there's not tons of room to spare. I don't drink anymore
though, and the lack of needing to carry a bottle of a group of cans
certainly helps!

@Brian
Nice to see you here! Glad you're living the NR20 life. I love that little
guy. Funny enough, I'm actually running a Erlen 2.0 from Blue Lug x Ocean
Air Cycles rn... I like them both very much but all time fav is definitely
the R10! I think I'ma take the R10 to Japan this Spring...

@Richard
Thanks very much! It's been the dream bike for quite some time and I'm
really, really happy with how it's turned out. I change the build all the
time (at least the bars and racks,) and it's never disappointed me. This
crank, I think, is certainly the centrepiece and I think it is very much
worth it if you can spring for it! I love how they look on
singlespeed/fixed gear setups. I'm strongly considering getting another one
for my fixed gear/ss bike! Send pics if you do it!

I can't see clearly from the photos, but it looks as if you have
knobbies under fenders. First, what are the tires? Secondly, what if any is
your front fender QR system, in case you pick up a stick? I am thinking of
getting a second, fat and knobby wheelset for one of my bikes and have
thought this would mean removing the fenders, but perhaps there are
 alternatives.

@ Patrick Moore,

I'll let the OP respond, but the tires appear to be Ultradynamico Mars Race.

I could be wrong about the Mars part, but they're definitely Ultradynamico.

Cheers,

[RBW] Intro from Pittsburgh

2021-03-08 Thread joshuamarx
Hello!
I've been spending time on this group for years, for inspiration and
information, and for general entertainment. It's high time I join the group
properly so I can contribute every once in a while.

I'm a proud owner of a 60cm 1st gen (I think) Cheviot, and a 59 cm MIT
Atlantis--one of the demo completes that Riv sold a while back. Links to
pictures are below (crossing my fingers that they come through properly).

Pre-COVID, 99% of my riding was commuting (downtown Pittsburgh) and errand
running. The non-commuting of COVID has really cut into my bike time--I may
need to figure out how to work recreational rides into my life this spring!

Linda:

Welcome and thank you for such a delightful intro. Your Fleetwing is a sweet
looking mixte. I admire the passion you have for it and the commitment you've
made to keep it rolling.

Be warned though. One Riv can lead to another! Hope you enjoy your Clem as much
as the Fleetwing!

Best regards,

The series is rather cute, as with the Mma Precious Ramotswe series set in
Botswana (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency), but I like them; both are well
written, and a nice change from Lee Child!

[RBW] Intro.....my humble roots, with some Riv content

2016-07-24 Thread LLM
HI, I'm Linda of Albany, NY. I've posted a few times here and have enjoyed
reading for several months. This is a longish post that serves as a bit of
an introduction to where I'm coming from.

I pre-ordered a Clem L-Style complete this spring in-between hip
replacement surgeries. The Clem will take the place of my Surly Disk
Trucker, which I will probably sell. Dreaming about riding a bike again
after 2 years of not being able was a great source of inspiration and hope
for me. Two weeks after the second surgery (early May), and with help from
a curb at the side of a parking lot, I climbed back on my 1970 Fleetwing
English 3-speed to enjoy an exhilaratingly pain-free ride. (There will
hopefully be a photo of the bike sporting my new MultiSack and a Wald
Folding Basket.)

The Fleetwing came to me almost unused when I was in my early teens. I
proceeded to ride the snot out of the bike, logging well over 1000 miles
over the 3-4 mile stretch of country roads I had permission from my mom to
ride. There was a long hill about 1/4 mile from my house that I would fly
down over and over again just for the thrill of going as fast as I could.
My father surprised me 5 years ago when he pulled the old bike out from
under a tarp and asked me if I'd like to take it It was like a reunion
with an old friend.

The bike clearly needed some work. My prior experience was limited to tire
changes and minor adjustments. Fortunately, a Google search took me
straight to Sheldon's page on "Servicing English Three-Speeds." He gives
the Fleetwing a one-line mention:

"Fleetwing - A house brand of Boston's Jordan Marsh department store chain."

The woman who passed the bike to me was a personal friend of the wife of
the owner of Jordan Marsh. I believe it was a Phillips model that Raleigh
continued to build after swallowing Phillips. The Fleetwing has the
characteristic Raleigh dropouts (according to Sheldon) and wacky Raleigh
threading.

Sheldon's site gave me the assurance I needed that the bike was worth
fixing. So I learned about cottered cranks and got a cottered crank tool
from BIkesmith on my way to the busted bottom bracket.I think I ordered
Phil Wood bearing grease from Rivendell. Got new bearings and assorted
tools from my LBS. A set of Panaracer Col de le Vies didn't fit under the
fenders. A set of Continental World Tours did. I added transmission fluid
to the Sturmey Archer hub; eventually the pawls started ticking again. My
first test ride put a familiar big smile on my face.

Sometime later, after my first terrifying attempt to stop the bike going
downhill in the rain, I sprung for a new set of alloy wheels from Harris
that included a modern SA 3-speed Hub. At the same time, I upgraded the
brakes to some long-reach Tektro side-pulls. To make room for the modern
hub, I spread the rear dropouts Sheldon-style, with a caliper, a long 2x4,
a chair and patience. It worked. Outside of a slightly bent front fork
which made the front end twitchy, I ended up with a great city bike. A
couple of months ago, in the course of conversation with Jeffrey Ferris of
"Ferris Wheels" in Boston, Jeff offered to look at the fork ("We are an old
school shop with old school tools and old school skills!"). The fork
couldn't be saved, but a shiny new chrome fork has resolved all of the
handling challenges. Handling has risen to a new level of importance now
that I have a mid-range Subaru's worth of fancy hardware (not counting cost
of installation) where my hip joints used to be!

One of my goals at the outset of the Fleetwing project was to learn enough
about bikes to be able to make an informed decision about purchasing a new
bike. I ended up with the Surly. The Clem L-Style is an obvious
successor. While I wait to hear from RBW that they are shipping my new
bike to me, I continue to pedal around town on my first bicycle love, the
Fleetwing.

2015-02-28 Thread Tim Gavin
I had the same drag on my 650b converted Riv Road with Longboards mounted
with Sheldon nuts. The short flap is the perfect solution. Sheldon nuts
make fenders so much easier.

Those SKS fenders were lost when the rear ate a stick and accordioned under
the brakes. FYI, my wheel did lock up but I skidded/stopped safely and
upright. I should have mounted the rear with the SKS QR tabs, separately
available from Riv http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/fe83.htm.

They've been replaced with a set of VO hammered 45 mm, and I added PDW
fender safety tab QRs
https://www.ridepdw.com/goods/spare-parts/fmf-safety-tabs, so random
sticks don't ruin this set. Lesson learned.

Yes, I meant front only, with 650B. Even after switching the fender

then have to stop and fix it.

I don't see how it would be that different with 700c (on my bike) as I
had the bolt all the way to the bottom of the slot using the nutted
brakes. My custom used to take 700Cx32 but now is 650Bx38, which is a
radius difference of 16mm if my math is correct. Might have still dragged,
at least on my bike. Maybe others with 700c tires in the 40s or 50s
 wouldn't have the issue.

I since switched to the correct recessed brakes for my custom Riv but
have the fender tang in front of the fork still.

I should have qualified my original posting with terms such as in my
opinion and on my bike or if you're willing to cut the stock flaps.
Still, I have had other people tell me they had the same problems with
Longboards in the front. Not to say though that I don't like these

How do you like the hammered VOs? Still running 650b x 38? Pics?

One of my Longboards got damages in an um 'unintended off road excursion'

Is your chainstay bridge threaded? Mine is not. Using p clamp and twist

You can run the attachments safely all this way along the brake bolt. I
was wondering how much stuff is too much to be hanging off the front end of
the fork crown, but I guess this means its perfectly fine to do so.

Re: [RBW] Stuff hanging on that front brake bolt on Homer on the RBW intro page...

2015-02-27 Thread Jim Bronson
Bill,

Yes, I meant front only, with 650B. Even after switching the fender
mounting tang to the front of the fork, I still drag the flap on the ground
sometimes which causes it to fold up under the tire and rub annoyingly. I
then have to stop and fix it.

I since switched to the correct recessed brakes for my custom Riv but have
the fender tang in front of the fork still.

I should have qualified my original posting with terms such as in my
opinion and on my bike or if you're willing to cut the stock flaps.
Still, I have had other people tell me they had the same problems with
Longboards in the front. Not to say though that I don't like these
fenders, because I do, and any problems with the flap dragging is fixable
in minutes.

Re: [RBW] Stuff hanging on that front brake bolt on Homer on the RBW intro page...

2015-02-26 Thread lungimsam
That's for sure!
Much easier to just undo the fender alone.
My only trouble is I can only get about 3.5 turns onto the brake bolt with the
longer of the two sheldon nuts in my pack. Bleriot crown with R559 brakes and a
rack on the front like this:
R559-brake spacer thingy-rack tab-knurled spacer thingy- to fork crown. Sheldon
nut winds 3.5 times onto brake bolt.
LBS said that's fine though. I used loctite stuff on it, too.

But for my other bike I am thinking of just loading it all on the front so I
can get the recommended six turns with standard Allen brake nut.

1. Brake, then nut thingy, 2. the rack tab, then 3. the fender tab, then
4. the washer/spacer knurled thingy, all up against the fork crown, and
then the brake bolt nut from the back.

So no need for a Sheldon nut for the fender tab.
You can run the attachments safely all this way along the brake bolt. I was
wondering how much stuff is too much to be hanging off the front end of the
fork crown, but I guess this means its perfectly fine to do so.

Just ride.

I have to say, you may not *need* a fender bolt, but it's nice not to futz
with the brakes every time you want to remove your fenders.

Greetings:

I've been lurking here for a while, starting when I was waiting for Riv to send
me my new A Homer Hilsen, which arrived in November. It's a 72cm, 2TT version,
which is needed to manage my 6'8, 280# frame. It is a fairly standard Riv
build (like me, built for comfort, not speed.), though the wheels are
Velocity LX Cliffhangers and the tires are 38mm Schwalbe Duremes, recommended
for this heavy duty application. I took a couple pictures during its
shakedown ride after I assembled it.

Since those were taken I added a large Sackville saddle sack and some other
commuterish items, and have been mainly riding it between home and town, a 15
mile roundtrip, for commuting to work and shopping. I'm hoping to explore more
of the countryside as the weather improves. Home is Boulder, CO, so there is a
lot to explore!

This is the first new bicycle I've had in 40 years, my other bike is a 1972
Schwinn Super Sport, which I still ride. It hasn't got much use though, since
Homer arrived, which shouldn't be much of a surprise. Pics of that bike are
here if you are interested:

I look forward to participating here and getting to know you folks.

[RBW] Intro/First Riv - Interior Frame Rust Question

2010-10-06 Thread Dlbracey
Hi all,

I've been reading and enjoying the posts here for a long while, but I
haven't done much posting up until this point. I just received my
first Riv bike (used AHH, early Waterford frame) and I'm very excited,
but I'm also a very fastidious person, perhaps to a fault. I stripped
all the parts off the frame last night and thoroughly inspected/
cleaned the frame. Besides a couple of small paint chips, I noticed a
couple of things that concerned me - there appears to be light surface
rust inside the tubes, visible primarily from the bottom bracket and
the threads of some of the rack braze ons show some rust. Should I be
concerned with this? Is there anything to do to stop the rusting?

My understanding is that framesaver won't help at this point. I've
read about some rust converter options, but I'm not sure I want to go
that route if it isn't necessary.

Also, I contacted Waterford today and was able to order what they
claim will be the proper touch up paint for my frame, I'm a bit
skeptical of it being a match considering the variations in AHH colors
that I've seen, but I'll report back when I have it.

Any help with the rust question would be much appreciated.

Dan

[RBW] Intro and Ride report

2009-11-15 Thread Dave Minyard
Hello all,
I tend to lurk here most of the time and have gleaned alot of good
information from this group. I have posted a few times but never really
introduced myself. So here gos.

My name is Dave Minyard and I live in Orcutt on the Central Coastof
California. I know... look at a map and it's certainly not the center of the
state, maybe center between L.A. and S.F.? Oh, well enough of that.

I ride a Saluki that I got in 2008 from RBW. It has been through a few
different configurations in that time. So far it has had in order of use,
moustache, noodle, albatross, and currently is sporting butterfly bars and
also has had a few different saddles...Brooks B17, Champion Flyer Special
and Imperial. But it currently has a Selle SMP. I have had different comfort
issues over the years so I am constantly changing things. The current set up
seems to be working pretty good tho.

Went on a good ride yesterday, kinda short ...30 miles round trip. but had a
great time and wanted to share pictures with the group. I rode from Arroyo
Grande, Ca. out to Huasna Valley and back. I had good weather, and saw quite
a few other riders, only 1 other lugged steel ride tho ( didn't get the make
on it). Here's a link to the pics.
