[RBW] New Frame Day (the build commences)

2024-02-15 Thread Bill Lindsay
I picked up my Pink Roadeo frame, fork, stem and fenders this morning at
Riv HQ. I took several photos and added them to my Flickr album with no
commentary (yet):

[RBW] New Frame Day

2023-12-09 Thread Linda G
I just unpacked my 50 cm Sergio green Platypus. Gorgeous frame. I love the
color and am already planning my overall color scheme. So far: Honey Brooks
B67-S, Velo Orange basket weave grips to match the saddle, cables probably
gray, and olive Saddlesack XS whenever they are made again. No racks to
start. Not flashy, pretty classic!

Awhile back someone started a thread on here about what model bike we would
like Rivendell to make. I said a mixte like the Cheviot though with V
brakes in a nice color green. I think someone at Riv must have read my
entry.

Next I need to take all the parts off my Soma Grand Randonneur and move
them over. I decided I'm just not a low trail person. Luckily it is 650B so
the wheels will fit and everything else should too. I will need new
handlebars and maybe a shorter stem.

Typo, that should be a 50cm, not 59. I will send you a private reply.

Re: [RBW] New Frame

2020-08-10 Thread Jon Dukeman
Wow! Thanks.
8 weeks ago I had lower lumbar decompression surgery because my left foot
dropped. I used to be 6'3" I'm now 6'1". I haven't ridden since last
September. I now have good days and bad. I hope I'm able to ride again. I
rode up and down the street a couple of times Saturday. I'm 69 yrs old.
Having trouble getting my leg over the saddle when dissmounting.
The 58 Sam just touches when I stand over. I could ride the Cheviot all day
long.
I'd like to hear more about your back if you feel like sharing.
I'm glad you will be back in the saddle again.
I don't know what I would do if I was told I couldn't ride again.
Sounds like you are in California.
I used to live down south in Long Beach.
Nice talking with you.

Jon, the last measurement, 3+ times was in the 80.645 area. Years ago when
Grant measured me it was 82 or 83. I know even though I have lost 2” after
2 back surgeries it seems impossible that I could lose anything from the
pelvic bone down. My last custom, which I sold when I thought I would
never ride again was 56cm. The Saluki I bought at 56cm was too big, the
Bleriot seemed fine but maybe I was more tolerant of a close fit. The 50cm
Atlantis with the new geometry I was told would have me taking a bike 4cm
less than my Bleriot, so a 54, which was not made would have been the
equivalent by using the 4” rule. 1cm less height may have made the bike
perfect, 2 cm probably better. I did try a 51 Appaloosa by invitation from
a forum member, it seemed ok, I brushed the TT a bit less than on the
Bleriot. I spoke with Grant and he was certain the 59cm Atlantis would be
a better fit, and I will use a 48mm tire vs. the 42mm I am using on the
Bleriot. If the TT is not giving you any issues on the Sam I bet it is the
correct size. My first Riv was a 53, then a 54, etc. the 54 was probably
the correct size but I wanted a true custom vs. a Road (stupid I know). I
had a 52.5cm AR that was probably perfect and if I had used fat tires I bet
I would have loved it. I was riding 28’s I think. That is the one I regret
parting with the most.
My Bleriot is a pleasure to ride now that I have remembered where to hold
the Albatross bars for best stability, the Atlantis will be a totally
different animal I am told.

Thanks Jon, it's a 50cm. I really wanted an orange Appaloosa but the 50cm
is just a better fit for me. My 55cm Bleriot is a tad big for me, that was
my excuse for getting a new frame.

It will be a simple build with my favorite parts.

"I will confirm that the fillet work on both my Gus and Susie is beautifully
and masterfully done. Could not feel or eyeball anything that looked less than
perfect."

Same for the fillet joints on my custom (I know that's redundant cuz custom but
bear with me). My frame has fillets and lugs and I think I'm actually more
fascinated by the pretty welds! I suppose they're newer to me as an old lug
guy, so this may play a part.

I love that Gus!

[RBW] New Frame Day! Almost a trade of a Black Mountain Road for a LEO

2018-05-23 Thread Bill Lindsay
I used to own two Black Mountain Road bikes. Both 59cm, both orange. One
lives at my mom's house and is set up as an all purpose road bike. The
other, at my house, used to be set up as a racier, lighter stripped down
road bike. I ran across an iBob lister who wanted a Black Mountain road
frame for a little less than retail, and we struck a deal. I took those
dollars and my Hail Mary dollars and my Rivendollars to get a Leo Roadini
frameset, and I picked that up today. The build will be exactly what I had
on my Black Mountain, except it'll have a quill stem and a 26.8mm
seatpost. The result will be a still-sporty road bike, but one that's a
little more upright and civilized. I think of it as having a vibe similar
to what we used to call a "sport touring" bike in the 1980s. My still-new
Legolas will be my aggro-race-bike. I expect to get right into the build
tonight, since I have everything. Fun detail: the quill stem will be a
Nitto-Ritchey-Force from a 1993 XO-1. I haven't planned out the fit in a
super detailed way, but I might end up with the stem totally slammed. This
57 has a tall headtube. This frame will allow me to get the bars WAY up,
if and when I need to do that. For now, I expect that they'll be up even
when they're down.

P.S. To their credit, multiple Riv employees asked "What are you buying
this for? You've got a road bike!" When I explained the "trade", then
they were like "Oh, OK, that makes sense then"

[RBW] New Frame Day!

2016-03-23 Thread David Banzer
Not a Riv, but pretty similar in my book, my Black Mountain Monster Cross
was dropped off a day early by Fedex. Pleasant surprise.
I rode me Clem in today which is shod with 29x2.1" Thunderburts. Thought,
why not try those to check clearances. Extremely surprised to find that
Thunderburts fit, with room for fenders. Due to the horizontal dropouts
though, it's tight squeeze to get the wheel in with a Thunderburt.
Mine will be set up initially as fixed/single. I'll most likely order up
another pair of Thunderburts.
This'll round out my current bike stable nicely with a Clem for daily
meandering, Redwood for roads, Schwinn Voyageur as a lock-up bike, and the
Monster Cross as a great all-rounder.
