Re: [RBW] Platypus: First Look

2020-10-22 Thread Roberta
I like the look of a trouser guard. I guess that is similar to a bash
guard. Very practical and can be very pretty.

I'm probably going with a 1x11, perhaps a 1x12, but I haven't spoken with
James at Analog about differences yet, except for the price. I live in a
fairly flat place and even if I got a triple, I don't think I'm strong
enough to use even the easiest of the easy gears. Is it possible to put a
trouser guard on a 1x? I guess my front ring would be a "double?"

I love the look of fenders, but will probably wait on them, since for
multimodal transport, they create complications.

Re: [RBW] Platypus: First Look

2020-10-22 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I’m glad you guys are resurrecting this thread. I am bored to tears over here
and talking bikes is good for morale. I got the fenders squared away. Analog
ordered the VO fluted fenders in 63 mm for my 43 or 44 (I forget) mm tires. I
also ordered the PDW breakaway tabs, which, incidentally was new to Analog. I
think with the trail riding they like to do those tabs are a good thing for
them to know about.

As far as cranksets, I just went with Silver from Rivendell. I nearly went 1x,
but honestly, I love the trouser guard (looks so clean) and I really do use
both cogs in front on the daily for Killer Hill. We won’t live here forever, so
if I do end up in flatter terrain someday, maybe I’ll try 1x then. Why do you
want a triple, Tom?

I’m still waiting for...everything. I have a pair of pretty, white Ergons and
THAT’S IT. The wheels aren’t scheduled to arrive at Analog until 11/6 (Velocity
is low on stock and these are being anodized), and the Platypus and its parts
are still at Rivendell. Hurry up and wait.

And because of the parts shortage, I would highly recommend to everyone that if
you are planning on ordering a Platypus, best get your parts ordered now. I
thought I was ahead of the game when I ordered my wheelset and dyno on 9.25,
since the Platypus wasn’t supposed to arrive until late November. But, the way
it looks, it will be Thanksgiving before I will be able to ride this bike.
2020, people. Ugh...

But, I do have those old 650b Clem wheels just sitting in my garage...what’s
the worst thing that could happen if I put those on my 700c bike? 🙃

Re: [RBW] Platypus: First Look

2020-10-22 Thread Tom Wyland
Well, all my bikes have fenders and I've found there is nothing more
annoying than a fender that rubs the tire when you go over bumps, etc. I
always size them 10mm wider than the tire. So a 43mm tire isn't going to
work very well with 45mm fenders unless the tires inflate to much smaller
than the stated width.

I'm having similar mental gymnastics, but not around fenders. I'm thinking
about a crankset for my Platypus. I guess you can't go wrong with the
Rivendell Silver, but I'm looking for a vintage triple I can put a bash
guard onto, maybe?

Fancy's great!, and best once it gets grimed. Diamond in the rough and
stuff.
And from what little I've learned of aluminum fenders from reading around
here, a most important take away is that the fender needs to be "relaxed",
meaning it wants to be precisely where it is, holding position, not trying
to pull itself elsewhere however slightly. An art? maybe. Certainly a job
suited to patient folks.

I am generally not a fan of wood fenders either but I can't argue that
those would look good on the Ras-Platypus. I'm trying to figure out what
fork crown that is on the Platypus, it's very similar looking to the Clem /
Hunq one but not the same (my Clem's got a half moon shape where that has

suggesting over-60mm fenders, but VO makes a 63mm fluted model for 700c

Re-radiusing is quite doable but also nice to avoid if possible, since it's
really not that hard to mess it up and end up with the wrong kind of wavy
fender.

Whoops, late to the party as usual. Anton's instructions are good. I do
recall reading about someone who used a hard -- wood? -- ball to increase
the flare and reduce the radius.

Re: [RBW] Platypus: First Look

2020-10-06 Thread Patrick Moore
It isn't too hard to re-radius fenders; I've done it in a small way to
reduce the 650B arch to 26"/559 bsd size. I know there are instructions on
the web. Basically the principle is that you can widen or flare the width
to reduce are arc, and compress or narrow the width to increase the arc.
Perhaps someone knows a link to good instructions. I know that Jan Heine
devoted a feature in a past Bicycle Quarterly to fenders, and the
instructions included re-radiusing.

Once you learn the general principles, the activity is pretty
straightforward; but of course, it's learning the method that is the hard
part. I learned it the hard way by, basically, ruining at least a couple of
nice, expensive pairs of metal fenders.

If you can get Analog to do it, go for it.

The raspberry color is very nice. Me, I dislike white accessories, but IMO
the raspberry paint will quite overshadow any white detractions.

I suppose I don’t understand how 650b fenders can work on 700 and vice versa,
but it’s encouraging to think that they CAN. If Analog can somehow mock up the
wavy VO fenders for my raspberry Platypus, I’ll be delighted. If not, I

Nothing stresses me out like asking people to do fenders for me. And worse,

Prior to Riv, I had a 1990 hybrid bike and my purchase of Ergon grips was

Re: [RBW] Platypus: First Look

2020-10-05 Thread Dave
I think all of VO's fenders are the same length. If anything, the fender
may grow slightly in overall length. The squeezing of the sides is going
to cause the fenders to slightly stretch. Think about squeezing a piece of
playdough (or real dough!?). If you smash a round ball, you get a much
bigger (but thinner) pancake. Same idea.

Re: [RBW] Platypus: First Look

2020-10-05 Thread Leah Peterson
Dave, this is fantastic. My tires will be 43 or 44, I think. But won’t the 650b
fenders be too short on a 700 c wheel??? If not, I would totally go for it.

Re-radiusing the wavy fender to fit 700c is very easy. Velo Orange even
has a blog on how to do
it: https://velo-orange.com/pages/re-radiusing-fenders

You'll have to gently squeeze the fender together so it ends up being a bit
narrower. The wavy is pretty wide from the start so you'll probably be ok
if your tire choice isn't super wide.

Re: [RBW] Platypus: First Look

2020-10-04 Thread 'Ann L' via RBW Owners Bunch
I will have to see about the colors. My Soma is the "Rivendell Blue"
color. From the pictures, the blilver looks closer to teal so that might
work. But I want a different color than the bikes I already have so if
it's too close to my Soma, I will opt for something else. I am not crazy
about the limolive but will wait for further pictures. I am also exploring
a custom paint job. But I do ride my bikes hard and all the time and given
the beausade I put on them, it might be best to go with a production
color. If I recall correctly, you are in Las Vegas and don't have to deal
with the same weather conditions so aluminum fenders may work out for you
and would look beautiful with your raspberry and cream color scheme. The
metal was thin enough on my honjo's that the bolt rotted through and I had
to rig it out with zip tie until I got it replaced. The Woody's are very
light, stunningly beautiful, and incredibly sturdy. I am playing with
different ideas for my build but I do know I want a single ring crank with
a 10 or 11 cassette and a sunracer bar end shifter (and the aforementioned
cork grips).

Ann,

Thanks for the recommendation - I’ll check the Woody fenders out!

Tell us about your build! What are you thinking? I’m sorry your bike isn’t
raspberry - I would have loved for the production run to come in that color.
But the blue and green offered are really lovely - which one are you planning
to purchase?

Oh, wow, just checked out the fenders and am surprised that the wooden fenders
hold up so well in rain. Very cool!

Leah, that is absolutely fabulous and inspiring. I can only hope the colors
of the production models are coming in are more appealing in person

Patrick, the Redline Monocog is a great bike and I've very nearly bought
one on a couple occasions; probably would have were it not for the fact
I've got a half dozen very similar bikes already.

Great simple bikes for just getting out and exploring/ cruising.

I assume you are getting the Dick brake version?
You will post pictures correct?

Re: [RBW] Platypus: First Look

2020-09-29 Thread Patrick Moore
I laughed, but in a friendly way, not a sneering way, at your enthusiasm,
and opened my eyes wide at the build list; hi-end! Nice!

I'm not sure a Platypus is my cup o' tea, but yours as described will
certainly be an elegant build and, if you ride it as you've ridden your
others, it will be a very practical build.

Between my eyes and my monitor, I can't say what the frame color is; can
you clarify in words what I can't see on screen? Purpley-gray?

Me, I am just making final arrangements to trade the remnants of a Riv Road
custom for a brutalist, cheap (but nicely cheap!) ready-to-ride Redline
Monocog 29er; this after I just had the same weird custom replaced by a
locally built, more integrated (racks and fenders and lighting routing),
more liberally tired (takes 42s under fenders) replacement.
