THOSE seem perfect, and cheap! Wonder if they are temporarily or
permanently out of stock?

Re: [RBW] Re: (Best) metal fenders for Joe Appa?

2020-10-10 Thread Patrick Moore
If the VOs turn out to be to narrow, try Colin at Kelpie who makes custom
fat tire fenders in a thicker gauge of aluminum with 6.5 mm instead of 5 mm
stays; about $250 or so, IIRC. (He used to make them from titanium at $100
more but said they were so strong that, when he collected a stick under his
front, it bent the fork but not the fender; he started using aluminum after
that incident.)

The finish is not polished, but they're not bad looking, and they are
strong. My Matthews RBFD has 3" of toe overlap with fender, so I kick the
front from time to time; no damage yet. And not too heavy, either; the 80
mm wide ones (to fit tires almost 62 mm wide) with second (tho' short)
front stay weigh about 2 lb the pair, about the weight of a pair of SKS's
in the wider sizes.

If you ever ride off-pavement with fenders, particularly with knobbies,
please consider some kind of breakaway stay mount for the front (or both
fenders). The Portland Design Works ones may be the nicest, but the
Berthoud plastic clips are good also.

I'll third, fourth, or fifth this (lost count), although I'll say that
Berthoud hardware has the lowest profile, so if you're worried about TCO
from the front fender, Berthoud should get extra emphasis (even if they
don't offer fancy hammered or fluted designs).

Don't forget to put flaps on at least the front fender so you don't damage
it hopping the bike off curbs.

I have used a couple sets each of Honjo (and Simworks Honjo) and Velo
Orange; the Honjo's have a little nicer hardware but they are quite
comparable overall. I don't think you'd go wrong with any of the three
mentioned metal options, just a matter of which has the width / style you
need--and between the three, you can cover just about any tire short of a
fatbike.

I'll second the Berthoud fenders. I've used VOs as well and they work fine
but for me, the Berthouds have been the least trouble free during
installation and in use. I like their stays as well.

Not cheaper, but the simworks flat 65 (
https://www.sim.works/collections/fenders-simworks-by-honjo/products/flat-65?variant=5250514812957)

worked on my Joe and look nice. It took some dimpling at the chainstays,
seatstays and fork crown, but they work well enough (and they were
leftovers from my clem). Gives plenty of room underneath for some 650x50
cazaderos.

I just mounted them for the "rain" California is expecting at the end of
the week.

Cheers,
