That is really well written. Sounds like an LA-centric type surprised to
find something so interesting out there on the edge of civilization. But
good natured enough about the whole experience to admit being
under-equipped; either too light tires or not enough tubes. They sound
like a fun group who has been introduced to a whole new area. "Adventure
ride" is the perfect description. I like Mark's comments at the end, too.

I always have a great time in "dirtville". Sand, gravel, water crossings,
rattle snakes, jambalaya, beer, good friends & good times.

I bet you lose weight while you're not riding (bacon or not).

When injury put me out for 2.5 months some years back, the bike layoff is not
something I would have chosen, but there were some unexpected psychological

2016-03-05 Thread cyclotourist
Hi Ted, GREAT question! Short answer: either of those tires would be fine.
Don't over think it! I've been all over the course with 32mm Eroicas, 40mm
MSOs, Nan40, Thunder Burts, 2.25 Nobby Nics... you get the idea. Each one
is a compromise, as the route is approximately 50/50 dirt/asphalt. Then the
dirt is divided by sandy, hard pack, level, steep, smooth, rutted... you
get the idea! Go with what suits your style best. If you like having more
traction for dirt, run a heavier lugged tire like the Knard. Happy
slip-sliding a bit in order to gain efficiency on the road, go with
something slick like a Hetre.
Clear as mud?

Doug, your recollections are correct. Parking is at the (lovely) Redlands
Mall: https://goo.gl/maps/3RPS6YEoPeD2

We'll see how we do getting all those people taken care of! :-)

Locals are encouraged to pre-register on Friday night at Stell Coffee.

Great post-ride party with live music.

Still spots for the 50k and 100 mile routes.

2016-03-01 Thread cyclotourist
Pre-riding is highly encouraged! I picked up three goatheads this weekend,
but was randomly screwing around on some little trails I found. I had
Stan's in tubes, so they sealed right up when I pulled them out. If you
know when you're coming down, and it extends to the evening or Sat
afternoon, you could go over to the BikeBBQ and
have a tube-filling party. Pretty easy to pull the core out and fill with
Stan's if you know what to do. If that doesn't work out and you can't get
the Slime tubes dialed in, bringing extra tubes (maybe three between you?)
is your next best bet.

50km route is going to be great: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/12362494 A
great sampler of what we flat-landers have to offer!

2016-03-01 Thread Kathy Carroll
That won't happen. Now back to Strada Rossa. My plan is to ride my cheviot
with hetres. So I ideally need to put slime in my tubes, right? And I'm
guessing for someone that doesn't know what they are doing, that i should
have lbs do that for me. I think Chuck can buy tubes for 700 with slime in
it. But the tubes with slime in it for 650b seem to be larger than what i
need for hetres. Not easy to take care of these things in Wrightwood so i
need to handle over the next couple days while we need to be off the hill
quite a bit.

And then I'm really hoping to ride the route one day next week so I know
what I'm in for. And now that chuck knows about muffin top bakery, i think
it will be easy to get him to go with me.

(I'm doing this on my phone. Sure hope it posts)

Ha, glad you have your priorities straight!

We're going clockwise this year, so Hangar's up front. Actually not on the
course this year. But on the 100k route, Brew Rebellion
in Yucaipa is a fine choice! They open at
noon!

I just registered Chuck and myself for the 50K (next year I'll get him to do the 100K).  Dave and Steph are registered for the 100K so it will be a major Wrightwood contingency.  I'm really excited for my first official "ride".  And it will be a really special day as the 2 guys share the 19th as their birthday.  Doug - please tell Melanie I registered.  Does the 50K count for her commitment to ride if I did?On Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 9:08:19 PM UTC-8, cyclotourist wrote:http://redlands-strada-rossa.blogspot.com/2015/11/were-putting-stake-in-it-march-19-2016.htmlA very Rivendell-friendly event! 2016-02-28 Thread cyclotourist
As of this morning, space is almost filled. We capped it at 250 riders over
the three routes.
Currently only 12 spots remaining for 100 miler, 18 for 100K and 20 for
50K.
If you're thinking of hopping on board, best be quick about!

I'm ecstatic you and your wife can make it! It's practically in your
back yard, right! The 100km is the signature event, so it's the one to
 shoot for in my opinion!

You brought up two related question. The first is about your tires. The
Nano/Knard combo will be fine. Anything more than 40mm is unnecessary.
As the second question is about bikes/tires, I'll add that like Mike
mentioned, some light knobbie tread will be really appreciated. So
whichever bike she brings I think she'll be happier with the tire that has
some knobs. That and whichever frame she will be most comfortable on for
six+ hours. Oh, and gearing for hills.

I don't think goatheads are going to be a big problem. I've been
pre-riding with my my road bike on Challenge Eroicas, which are pretty thin
rubber. No problems. So don't choose a tire just for puncture resistance.
Pick the tire for the terrain: 30 miles of roads, and 30 miles of hardpack.
A few short sand sections. As insurance, taking out the valve core and
putting a couple ounces of Stans wouldn't hurt at all. I'd do that before
tire liners. In fact, that is what I do!

So don't know if that helped clear things up for you. I hope some.
Anything else, definitely let me know!

Was out in the hills today, and it's beautiful!

That photo should go into the IEBA permanent file for marketing purposes.
It's great! And thanks for pre-running the course & picking up all those
nasty goatheads. I've got Phil's patch on my front bag anyway. Ya never
know!

2016-02-15 Thread cyclotourist
David, sorry to not have replied to you sooner... life happens sometimes.

I'm ecstatic you and your wife can make it! It's practically in your back
yard, right! The 100km is the signature event, so it's the one to shoot for
in my opinion!

I've been pre-riding
with my my road bike on Challenge Eroicas, which are pretty thin rubber. No
problems. So don't choose a tire just for puncture resistance. Pick the
tire for the terrain: 30 miles of roads, and 30 miles of hardpack. A few
short sand sections. As insurance, taking out the valve core and putting a
couple ounces of Stans wouldn't hurt at all. I'd do that before tire
liners. In fact, that is what I do!

So don't know if that helped clear things up for you. I hope some. Anything
else, definitely let me know!

Was out in the hills today, and it's beautiful!
