Patrick, Look back at my pictures. the real beauty of the Pauls is how
they don't close up the clearance as they actuate under use like those ding
dang Shimano grouplesss "long reach" calipers did. Fenders rattled like a
maracas under braking.

[RBW] Re: Adding Canti mounts to a Ram???

2018-08-20 Thread ascpgh
Jeremy, I had the Honjo H-27 (36mm per Alex's Cycles) hammered fenders from
a lister over 28s and the Shimano dual pivot "long reach" calipers to
start.

Then I added a pair of Stampede Pass ELs and a dent from a tri-dork who
rear ended me in urban traffic while on the aero bars. it was enough of a
tweak I had to replace them and went the long ones from Compass in 40 mm
width, the H-50. My old front one had been bodged to be clear and sort of
rattle free from the caliper, except not while braking ironically. That
really nailed the need for the Paul Racers as well.

Now I am free and clear of all fender and caliper concerns within the
clearances of my frame, stop like a demon and with an added mudflap up
front have ridden 80 miles in the rain on a rail trail with zero trashing
of the drivetrain. It's a very good situation and encourages more frequent
use.

The Paul Racer M (Medium) would be the correct reach (47-57 mm) for your
frame.

https://www.rivbike.com/collections/braking/products/brakes-centerpull-paul-racer-medium

Paul and Modern Bike in Des Moines sell them by the caliper, so you could
just get a rear one for the problem area.

You'd need a cable hanger as well.
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/braking/products/nitto-brake-hangers-key-fob
.

Just something to think about, maybe next time you install fenders.

Mafac Raid, or their modern version offered by Compass offer the most reach
and clearance. Pauls are easier to set up IMO, they all have very good
stopping power and the salmon pads are available for all. That said, if you
were going to paint your frame there are some great options with canti
bosses. Paul Mini-Motos are fantastic brakes and Compass sells some modern
Rene Herse Cantilever brakes which look very cool and are very light.

Re: [RBW] Re: Adding Canti mounts to a Ram???

2018-08-20 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Tim. So I'll not worry any more about cantilevers, unless I take
the deep plunge and send the frame in to have the seatstay bridge raised a
bit.

I was using a very nice medium-reach dual pivot -- one of the models Riv
sells -- and the arms interfered grossly with the fenders whenever I
applied the brakes; tried denting the fenders to accommodate the arms, and
just messed up the fenders. Got new fenders and a pair of superlatively
nice Dura Ace 7400 calipers; and these interfered, but far, far less, and a
little, discrete dent or 2 fixed that. But really, the frame needs a higher
rear bridge to really make the bike fender-perfect.

I'd consider the Paul or Compass centerpulls, but (1) the DAs now work fine
with the fenders "adjusted", and (2) they have too much reach, as this
frame was built for slightly less than 57 mm pad reach. And I know enough
about Mafac Racers to judge that they'd not add enough benefit to make it
worth swapping out the DA calipers.

2018-08-20 Thread Tim Gavin
Patrick-

Yes.

Centerpulls have more clearance at the bridge/crown than sidepull brakes.
Especially dual-pivot sidepulls, which intrude on the fender space when
opened. I switched from Tektro R559s to Paul Racers on my Riv Road 650b
because the R559 kept bending the front fender.

You'd have to measure the reach of your brake setup, but "medium" reach
centerpulls like Paul Racer Ms, Weinmann/DC 610s, or vintage MAFAC Racers
would probably fit.
"Long" reach centerpulls like Paul Racers, Compass, Weinmann/DC 750s, and
MAFAC RAIDs would probably have too much reach.

Centerpulls with stiffer arms (Compass and Paul) give the most confident
braking feel, but most can be made satisfactory with some fresh cables and
KoolStop pads.

calipers with cantis on my 2003 custom for better fender clearance. The
calipers *are* 7400 Dura Aces, and they clear fenders as well as any other
caliper that I can think of, except perhaps some of the old, cheap
Weinmanns.

But perhaps Mafac or Paul or Compass centerpulls will give all the
clearance that crown and bridge allow, so that cantis, and the cost and
hassle of adding bosses, aren't needed? Can anyone say?

Thanks, Patrick

2018-08-17 Thread Mark Schneider
I had a similar issue with my Homer. To get more clearance for fenders with
wider tires I found a very clean set of Mafac Raids, and put them on my
Homer, they work very well. Compass make centerpulls that are very similar
to the Raids but $$$. Paul Components Racer's are also very nice with
reach between 559's and the Raids. So yes I would consider centerpulls. I
got my Raids for around 60$ on EBay, but it took a while.

[RBW] Re: Adding Canti mounts to a Ram???

2018-08-16 Thread Kieran J
I have an orange Ram and compared to what others have described with
theirs, it does seem like mine has slightly lower brake and fender bridges
in the rear. The fork has slightly more clearance, with the pads further
down in the slots.

it can really only accommodate 700x30s and fenders in the rear, without
things really starting to look squished together and starting to rub. I run
it fenderless with Gen.1 Barlow Pass 700x38 (35.5 actual). I did have it
set up with 650x42s and 52mm VO fenders briefly, using DC-750 brakes since
the Tektro R559 would not reach comfortably in front. Braking with the DCs
really sucked and added a lot of extra cabling and hangers which I found
annoying. In the end, I much preferred it 700x35, unfendered with R539
mid-reach brakes, so I switched it back.

Jeremy, SKS P45 fit great over 700 x 28mm tires on blue Rambouillet. Allso for

709 x 32 approaches my limits of too close with fenders. I like alot of

Honjo hammered H50 fits front. Haven’t checked rear yet.

Andy, what fenders are you using on your ram with the Stampede Passes? I
just picked up a Ram that is running 28's (Ruffy Tuffy) with super narrow
(35mm?) hammered Honjos and Shimano sidepulls, and I definitely couldn't go
any wider with the current setup, but like I'll of us I'm contemplating
what a switch to centerpulls and wider fenders would let me get away with.
I'd want to stick with hammered fenders though, since they just look so
right on the current setup!

I put Paul Racers on my Ram and use Stampede Pass 700 x 32 tires under
fender with clearance.

If you notice, the rear bridge area is not pearl orange, that was due to it
needing to be rebreed this spring. I had it put right back where it was
instead of monkeying with any change in clearance. The chain stay bridge is
of the same clearance and works well as is. Without decals I couldn't do a
true repaint so I just did a panel. I have a real fix on the way.

As for going to bigger tires (removing fenders), I'd read enough about
changes of handling when riding beyond 32mm tires that I stayed right there
with the Stampede Passes.

[RBW] Re: Adding Canti mounts to a Ram???

2018-08-14 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
Where does it rub, if you tried putting larger tires? Going from 539 to 559
changes the reach, but may not magically offer more room for bigger tires.
I ask this because I suspect your issue is crowding from the bottom side of
the brake arms. If this is the case, you should consider changing brake
type (to centerpulls like what others had suggested). If workable, changing
to centerpulls is much quicker and cheaper than brazing on new cantilever
bosses.

Also remember that the decal sets are all gone. So, if you wanted to repaint
after brazing on canti posts, it's not going to say "rambouillet."

Anyone converted a Ram to 650b using Paul racers? If so, will it clear a
42mm tire with fenders?

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Adding Canti mounts to a Ram???

2018-08-14 Thread Leslie
If you switch your 539s out with 559's, you should be able to adjust it
enough to get the pads to fit 650b's, could go w/ 42's. (That's what I did
with my
Ram:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/leslie_bright/8351735340/in/album-72157623199721925/

)

You could try sidepulls instead, not a bad route, wouldn't require a 650b
wheelset.

If neither of those float your boat: I would suggest looking for a
canti-Rom: it's almost a Ram, there are some out there w/ canti's, lets
you run a bigger tire. I'm running 700cx40 MSO's on
mine:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/leslie_bright/16004557507/in/album-72157623199721925/

(caveat: it's REALLY close on clearance! Less than a 40 would be prudent.
)

Actually, thinking along those lines... if sidepulls or a 650b swap
doesn't do it, you might really want to consider a AHH... I know, you said
you didn't want another frame, but, maybe another frame would work better.
There's the new ones coming in from elsewhere, or, maybe a used AHH, or, a
Sam

Thanks for the pics. That turned out great. That's probably the way to go.
Less $, I don't have to go bikeless, and it doesn't permanently alter the
frame.

I would at least try 650b before brazing as it is an easily reverse-able
experiment, if you have the spare wheels.

But you will need Thinline pads with R559 to reach the braking area of the
rim satisfactorily, IME.
Or those Really long centerpulls Dia Compe makes.

Braking feels fine to me with the R559's.

Center pull brakes would maximize fender/tire clearance without requiring
brazing and paint.

[RBW] Re: Adding Canti mounts to a Ram???

2018-08-14 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Here it is 650b with tons of clearance.
https://www.flickr.com/gp/70237737@N00/zD46Mb

I tried 700 x 32 but fenders too close.
700 x 28 better but fall hazard as I get sub-28mm tires stuck in road
cracks and crash.
So 32 minimum for me from now on.
or 650b x 42.

I ride my blue 53 Rambouillet 650b with Tektro R559 650b x 42 Compass
tires. Kool Stp thinline pads for even extra reach for the braking track on
rim. Same bb height as a 650b Bleriot with 38mm tires, so safe around
corners . I use 170mm cranks.

No need for braze-ons. Oodles of clearannce (~1.5-2cm all around tires )
with SKS P45 fenders.
