I owned a Saga and am demo'ing a Privateer. They ride similarly, but the
Saga was just a hair smoother. If you want to save a little $$$, the
Privateer is an excellent choice.

[RBW] Re: Any recommendations on a "Atlantis wannabe"?

2014-06-25 Thread Chris in Redding, Ca.
Hey All,
My 84 Stumpy Sport is my Atlantis. It's my second one. The first I bought
new and took 25 years to kill it, and the second I bought off the local CL
for $50.

And it's orange, like the early Rams, sort of... that last part doesn't not
matter one iota, but I have a soft spot for an orange bike.

Regards,

[RBW] Re: Any recommendations on a "Atlantis wannabe"?

2014-06-25 Thread Dave Johnston
I converted my old 93 MB-3 to an upright roadster with 42mm slicks and
Albatross bars for my girlfriend and the end result was a bit squirrelly.
If I recall the Bridgestone MTB's of the era had steeper angles than other
brands. Having all the weight in the back doesn't help. I find it
noticeably squirllier than any other bike I have yet still acceptable but
my girlfriend has trouble keeping it on a straight line and is easily
bumped off course by rocks/ holes in the road. She much prefers the Soma
San Marcos I built for her after the MB3. The San Marcos has bigger dia
wheels (650b), lower BB and slacker geometry all of which helps the overall
stability.

OTOH I have a 89ish era Koga Miyata 26" MTB and I think that handles even
better than my 26" Atlantis. I haven't found good geometry data on that
particular bike so I'm not sure why it might be so nice.

Schwinn Cimarron (to name a few) ALL make fantastic all-rounder type

Or why don't you just spring for an Atlantis??? I mean you DO like this

Joe's suggestion of a Bridgestone MB- is a good one & a possible expansion
of that thought would be the RB-T or one of the XO variants. As
predecessors to Rivendell they will share the same design philosophy, i.e.,
longer chainstays, rack eyelets, decent gearing, etc.

Any old Bridgestone MB-something should do fine for not too much money. I
don't know about your area, but there's a billion of 'em here in the San
Francisco Bay Area. Every 26-inch wheel Bstone in N. CA. seems to have been
kept on the road in reasonably decent shape.
