To each their own. The reality is that you use your first.last name@gmail email 
address to send to the group which can be obtained fairly easily. And the 
people who are really profiting off of linking up all that information already 
are doing so by using their servers and services.

I use my formal first name and first initial of my last. These are real. 
Then I sign with my more informal, what I go by of "Bill" and always say 
where I actually reside in Westchester, NY. That is the county that I live 
in. If someone really wanted to find me or mess with me they would have to 
figure out my last name and town/address. And then what a bust it would be, 
they would be so disappointed...

returned from a S24O to find that in every pic he took of me, I was flashing a

Real name. Only other name I’ve used online is fuzzy. I make it a rule to only 
do things online hat I think are appropriate so if someone were to find them 
there’s nothing wrong with them. That being said, as a teacher I keep my 
instagram, Facebook, strava, etc locked down.

I don't use my real name because I worked in forensic psychiatry with sex 
offenders, most of them are harmless but some aren't and I don't want them 
knowing my life. With a bit of detective work you can figure out who I am 
but I don't think they will go to that much trouble. It is just a small 
layer of protection (I mean really small).

We had guidelines to help protect ourselves with online presence and social 
media and I follow some of it.  

Plus I use the same name for all my online cycling forums. Makes it easier 
for other like minded people see I am the same person.
