[RBW] Re: Beartown Mountain Overnight, Cheviot, Rain, Question

2017-10-31 Thread Clayton.sf
I run mine with a 11-36t (10 speed) in the back with a 38t ring up front
(1x setup). Gets me up most hills with a load around here. I have a 110 bcd
crank on it, but if I had something with a granny option I would add that
small ring to it without the front derailer so I'd have a bail out option
just in case.

[RBW] Re: Beartown Mountain Overnight, Cheviot, Rain, Question

2017-10-31 Thread Antone Könst
It's the only 718 ride I've done, so I'm no expert, but it was really
great. Joe was prepared but laid back, the group was convivial and
diverse, and there was no pressure to go fast or slow. When my friend
took a spill, everyone had bandaids for him and no-one had unwanted advice,
that warmed my heart. And many people brought food and beer to share. So
if it's any indication of a normal ride with them I'd say do it!

Also going to take Joe's advice and get a 12-36 and XT derailer in the
short term, and save up for a beautiful new double crankset in the long
term.

Yeah, I’d also like to know more about the vibe of those rides. They sound like
fun, but there’s nothing worse than camping with people with different
expectations than you.

And man, I hear ya on the “all good rides are 45 minute train rides away”
thing. Makes it much harder to just sneak in a ride.

[RBW] Re: Beartown Mountain Overnight, Cheviot, Rain, Question

2017-10-30 Thread Bob B
Cool ride! And cool bike! Boscos!

I've been wondering about those 718 trips. Was it a good bunch? I wish we
New Yorkers didn't have to get on a train to get to some decent bicycling.

If I were you I would go up to a triple if you wanna do lots more long
rides like this, but at least a double. Every ride I do upstate I end up
using all 3 chainrings. I've never had a 1x setup, so I cant speak to what
you'd be missing out on. Maybe a greater physical challenge? But two or
three chainrings = convenience!
