[RBW] Re: Chilly Hilly and 1st Brevet
Awesome, Brian! In my experience, sustained wet and near freezing temps are as dangerous as -30˚F, requiring the right gear for being out in it all day. The feet are no exception. A few things that may be worth trying for you: -- carry baggies and add them to your feet (either next to the skin or after a thin wool sock) as vapor barrier. Chances are this change alone would have made your get warm and toasty. -- multiple wool socks, with adequate space for circulation inside your footwear. In my experience there is little point to trying to keep the socks and shoe dry. They are going to get wet. Have a dry pair available for when you are done, at least of the socks. On multi day events, drying the socks is a challenge and give up drying the footwear. No mention of your rainwear system, so I presume you have one you like? What do you use? [RBW] Re: Chilly Hilly and 1st Brevet
I use wool for the most part - three layers up top (2 light, one medium) and 2 below (wool bibs and the wool long johns from Rivendell). At the mid point, I took off the outer wool jersey and put on a hardshell jacket - this kept the wind down and the heat in. Two pairs of wool gloves, and wool socks tried to keep the hands and feet warm. It worked for the hands but less so on the feet - too much water splash. We don't generally get too cold out here, but I grew up in MN, so I know about layers :) I would say that this ride was just uncomfortable at the end of the day - no worries about hypothermia as I kept the core pretty warm. Just not a great idea to have mesh light hikers with no outer covering on the shoes. Splats would have been perfect. A mudflap would have helped, too, but the bike is too new... I'll be there -- 8:45 boat sounds good to me. I usually wear my keen sandals with wool socks even in the winter, but those are only good down to about 44deg for an hour or less. Re: [RBW] Re: Chilly Hilly?
Here's my East Coast perspective on the Chilly Hilly - im visiting family in Seattle (I live near DC). I rode Chilly Hilly with my son-in-law, but didn't mention to the list because I knew we were going to take a later ferry. We rode to the ferry from West Seattle and after getting caught because the lower bridge was opened, we took the 9:35 ferry. First half of the ride was cloudy, a occasional spitting rain - but it snowed a bit, hailed a bit and then rained the entire last 15 miles, plus wind and rain blasted us on the ride back to West Seattle. You would not have recognized me -- as I was riding a mint green Trek Pure step-through townie bike! Nothing Riv about me yesterday except my wool jersey - safely secured under my pink jacket. It's my daughter's bike and luckily it has low gears. My son-in-law was on an MB-2 with a Carradice bag in back and banana bag in front. (If anyone happened to see either of us.) A number of riders commented on my bike...it certainly was distinctive among the bikes I saw on Bainbridge. Here's my perspective: 1) If this ride had been in the DC area, there wouldn't have been over 3,000 riders (the count I heard, and yes, I know there are usually 5,000). In DC there would have been 300, weather-wimps that we are. 2) I saw many many more steel bikes yesterday than I see in the DC area, I mean, more in one day yesterday than I see in a month or two! I saw an Atlantis and a Hillborne and spoke to both but they just said hello and went on by. Doing CH gave me a good idea of what it's like to bike here year round. Sorry I missed the fun. Did get the car fixed. Let's try it again next year. Joyce On Feb 28, 4:13 pm, Joan Oppel oppel...@verizon.net wrote: Here's my East Coast perspective on the Chilly Hilly - im visiting family in Seattle (I live near DC). It was a lousy to day to ride but I still had a good time...winter break is over tomorrow so I was riding no matter what!. It's always fun to do these big rides (though I rarely do them), mainly to look at bikes and riders. I ran into Brian and Andy but otherwise didn't see any other Rivendells. Besides their bikes I didn't see too many that interested me a couple nice Davidsons, a sweet black 650B, rando bike, and a few nice old cobwebby stumpjumpers, etc. Course was nice ( I like hills and this had a bunch), traffic good, bike riders were all fairly well-mannered. Great shots Andy thanks for sharing. I had other commitments this year and frankly not enough miles in the tank to make it more than just a plod. Glad you had good weather and a good turnout. Always fun to see that ferry deck full of bikes. Ryan W. Seattle On Mar 1, 9:07 pm, awilliams53 awilliam...@gmail.com wrote: A fine turnout (6000+) on the Chilly Hilly on Sunday, February 28. And there was one roaming the streets of Wallingford/Ballard/CrownHill/ North Seattle for a couple hours after a morning of kid watching. Maybe next year! My camera battery died right away, so not much for photos, but I found out that I can do 50+ miles on the Porteur bars and B17 with no ill effects. The Jack Browns continued to run smooth and true, as well.
